A Mutare family has reportedly disowned its son after discovering that he was gay.
The family spoke on Manicaland’s Diamond FM radio channel saying it was failing to come to terms with the sexual orientation of their son, Tafadzwa Maswa.
This was after his grandmother caught him pants down with another man.
Tafadzwa’s grandmother said she still cannot stomach the humiliation her son has brought to her in the suburb of Dangamvura. His granny said on Diamond FM:

What broke my heart the most is that I caught him red-handed indulging with another man on my bed. How could he curse my bed in such a manner?
</blockquote>
Reacting to the radio interview, GALZ has criticised Zimbabwe’s laws for fuelling hate against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex (LGBTQl+) community. Said the association:

It is unfortunate for Zimbabwe that the law currently facilitates harassment of LGBTQl+ individuals because of their perceived sexual orientation or gender identity, therefore Tafadzwa’s mental health becomes our priority.
We are concerned that the interview vilifies our kind as Tafadzwa’s perceived sexual orientation was exposed in the interview rendering them vulnerable to threats of violence, harassment, stigma and discrimination.
Consequently, our community lives in fear of violence and abuse because they have witnessed abuse or encountered homophobic slurs.
</blockquote>
Most gays and lesbians in Zimbabwe hide their sexual identity due to discrimination, exclusion and violent attacks against them causing permanent fear and loneliness.
The late former president Robert Mugabe publicly denounced homosexuality saying those who engage in same-sex relationships were worse than dogs and pigs.

Mutare Family Disowns Gay Son

The Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ) has denied reports which say it received US$300 000 funding from the United States embassy in Harare.
In the fake news post, purportedly published by NewZimbabwe.com, the authors claimed GALZ was grateful to the opposition political outfit, MDC Alliance, and its leader Nelson Chamisa for facilitating the release of the funds.
However, a GALZ communications officer, who requested anonymity, told NewZimbabwe.com that it was unfortunate the organisation was being portrayed in the wrong light which was injurious to its standing as an apolitical champion for the promotion and protection of rights of sexual minorities, who include lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons.
The spokesperson said GALZ never received funding from the said source. Said GALZ in a statement:

It is an act of defiance to be gay or lesbian in Zimbabwe considering that beyond the insults, the threat of jail is real, as Zimbabwe punishes same-sex sexual relationships with up to 14 years imprisonment.
Beyond jail, there is the everyday lived experience of discrimination, violence and hate crimes with which LGBTI people must contend — <a href="https://www.unaids.org/en/resources/presscentre/featurestories/2021/may/20210517_being-gay-in-zimbabwe">across 69 countries worldwide that criminalize same-sex sexual relationships.</a>
Nevertheless, GALZ in 2018 said the harassment of gay people by state agents has gone down since 2017 when President Emmerson Mnangagwa came to power.

Gays And Lesbians Association Deny Receiving US$300 000 From US Embassy

Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ), an association of lesbians and gays in Zimbabwe has issued a statement on the World Day of Social Justice. Below is the organisation’s statement.

The National Aids Council (NAC) is working on establishing, five drop-in health centres in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Mutare and Kwekwe for men having sex with men (MSM). The move has been hailed by the Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ). NAC Monitoring and Evaluation director, Amon Mpofu said
<blockquote>We are trying to help the minority community so that they can access medical services after realising that they have been discriminated against. This is part of our programming in the first against the spread of HIV and Aids, as we go towards having a new zero HIV infections. Here they will be able to discuss their health-related issues, peer education and pick condoms among other issues that affect them daily.</blockquote>
GALZ has said that ever since President Emmerson Mnangagwa came into power, harassment from state agencies has gone down.

National Aids Centre To Establish Clinics For Gay Men

Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ) director Chester Samba confirmed to NewZimbabwe.com that the association met with war veterans secretary general Victor Matemadanda who was in the company of his Zanu PF colleagues.
The meeting followed a letter GALZ had written to Zanu-PF requesting the Mnangagwa led administration to state its official position regarding the affairs of the  lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Said Samba:
<blockquote>What came out of the meeting was the pledge and they also responded that they will be coming back to us with a more formal response around the issues that we tabled in the meeting. We highlighted how we in the LGBTI community were affected by the climate of intolerance that perpetuated previous elections, the use of hate speech that impacted on our community…and also the use of state machinery to clamp down on LGBTI activities in our communities.</blockquote>

Top Zanu-PF Officials Meet Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe

Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Obert Mpofu said that the party will be meeting with election observers from GALZ (Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe).
Mpofu said this after meeting with a Commonwealth delegation which is in Zimbabwe to assess the country’s eligibility to rejoin the Commonwealth. He said Zanu-PF will meet with election observers from GALZ. Said Mpofu:
<blockquote>Yesterday (Monday) we met the National Democratic Institute and the International Research Institute from Ireland. We also have requests from observers like GALZ (Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe) and we will be meeting them soon to hear their issues as well. Zanu-PF To Meet Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe

Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (Galz) has said that it will apply to exhibit at next year’s Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF). This comes after sex workers, who were represented by the Sexual Rights Centre (SRC) <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/04/26/commercial-sex-workers-granted-permission-to-exhibit-at-zitf/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">were granted permission to exhibit at this year’s edition.</a>
Galz director Chester Samba said
<blockquote>When I saw SRC participate at the ZITF, at least we were very encouraged as an organisation.
I am sure the SRC was trying to test the political waters under the new dispensation, this dispensation really needs to be tested. I am sure we will do the same next year but that will depend with what we want to achieve from exhibiting or whether the platform will be suitable for what we want as an organisation.</blockquote>
Galz is an organisation which strives for the attainment of full and equal human, social and economic rights in all aspects of life for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex (LGBTI) persons.
