Former Warriors captain Peter Ndlovu missed out on a US$120 000 house gift after demanding that he be paid to attend the unveiling of Sakunda Holdings’ sponsorship of Highlanders and Dynamos.
Chronicle reported a source as saying that the house gift was supposed to be a surprise gift for the Mamelodi Sundowns team manager but Ndlovu’s refusal to attend the ceremony over a US$6 000 appearance fee meant that he missed out on the house. Said the source:

Peter was invited well on time, but he insisted that he be paid for gracing the function. He wanted about US$6 000 in appearance fees.
The organisers wanted the house gift to be a surprise to him and hence could not let the cat out of the bag.
Even Madinda went thinking he was just a guest, but his younger brother wanted more.

Peter’s brother, Madinda Ndlovu, who is a Highlanders legend and former coach reportedly wept when Sakunda Holdings boss Kuda Tagwirei broke the big news about the house gift.
Sakunda Holdings last month unveiled a US$5.3 million sponsorship for the country’s two biggest football clubs and also gifted a house worth US$120 000 to the late football icon George Shaya’s family and houses worth US$90 000 to Madinda Ndlovu and Moses Chunga.
Peter was also in line to get a similar house to Shaya, but he had to be present for the offer to be extended to him.

Peter Ndlovu Misses Out On US$120 000 House Gift From Sakunda

The government has granted a State-assisted funeral to the late former Dynamos striker, George Shaya, who died in Harare on Tuesday.
Shaya, arguably the greatest Zimbabwean footballer of all time, will be buried on Saturday at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare.
Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister, Kirsty Coventry, conveyed the message to the Shaya family, on Wednesday. She said:

First of all, I would like to convey my heartfelt condolences to the Shaya family, following the passing on of the great George Shaya.
He is one of the greatest sportspersons to have emerged from this country.
Government has, therefore, accorded him a state-assisted funeral.
His death is not only a blow to the Shaya family, but to Zimbabwe, as a whole.
The history of the game will be amiss without the mention of his name.

Coventry, who was accompanied by her deputy, Tino Machakaire, also took time to chat with the legends, who were in attendance.
They included Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa, John “JP” Phiri, Raphael Kaondera, Stewart “Shutto” Murisa, David George and George Nechironga.
On Tuesday, Dynamos appealed to authorities to consider honouring Shaya with national hero status.

George Shaya Granted State-assisted Funeral

Olympique Lyonnais and Warriors striker Tinotenda Kadewere has paid tribute to the late Dynamos legend George Shaya and thanked him for the “wise words” he shared with him on his birthday.
In a post on Twitter, the 25-year-old former Prince Edward High School pupil said Shaya was an inspiration to youths who are now football legends in their own right. <a href="https://twitter.com/Tino_Kadewere_/status/1430198211386433537">Said Kadewere:</a>

Kadewere Pays Tribute To Late Football Legend George Shaya

The late former Dynamos talisman George Shaya has been described by some football commentators as the greatest footballer to ever come out of Zimbabwe, or G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time).
Speaking to State media in November last year, former Warriors captain, Peter Ndlovu, who led Zimbabwe at its maiden Africa Cup of Nations in 2004 as skipper, described Shaya as the godfather of football. Said Ndlovu:

We always talk of legends, we are legends of course, but we may talk whatever we want, and bring whatever we may bring, regardless of where you have been, where you have played.
Whatever guys, let’s not kid ourselves, this is a non-starter, this is really a no-show to compare ourselves with this man, we are nothing, we are too far (behind) guys.
Let’s just own up and hand him the crown, all the time, he deserves it, all the time, he deserves respect, we are not going to talk about other people, this man is the one.
In actual fact, we are saying, let’s start from people like Khama (Billiat) and myself, we are the sons of football, let’s go to Madinda (Ndlovu), let’s go to Moses (Chunga), let’s go to Marimo — Misheck and Sunday — those are the fathers of football.
But, when we speak of George Shaya, we are speaking of the godfathers of football, the owners of football in Zimbabwe and, of course, the owners of football, in the world.

Meanwhile, Jomo Sono (66), widely regarded as one of the greatest South African footballers of all time, yesterday showered Shaya with the ultimate compliment, describing him as the finest attacking footballer to come out of Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has sent a condolence message to the Shaya family following the death of Dynamos legend George “Mastermind” Shaya.
In a statement on Tuesday, ZIFA Communications and Competitions Manager Xolisani Gwesela described the late as a footballer par excellence whose shoes will be difficult to fill. Said Gwesela:

The Zimbabwe Football Association conveys its heartfelt condolences to the Shaya Family and the local football fraternity at large following the sad passing of football legend George “Mastermind” Shaya, an exceptional footballer who excelled during the colonial era, one of the most difficult periods in the history of Zimbabwe.
His legacy of excellence as a serial winner and record-five time soccer star lives eternally to inspire many generations of local footballers.

Shaya (77) passed away early on Tuesday at his home in Glen Norah, Harare.
He is the only player to be named Soccer Star of The Year five times, that is, in 1969, 1972, 1975, 1976 and 1977.
Dynamos have since written to ZIFA seeking facilitation of conferment of national hero status on the late Shaya.

Other footballing nations recognize the importance of football legends, businesses in those regions recognize the value of such legends and actively seek their endorsements. Back in Zimbabwe and some African countries the tradition is not religiously upheld, even for the all-time greatest.

Gorge Shaya Memorabilia Auction Goes Live For 7 Days

Today in the economic hub of Johannesburg, in South Africa Zimbabwe Achievers awards will honor football legend George Shaya, New Zimbabwe reports. The awards which will<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/10/26/zimbabwe-achievers-awards-dates-announced/"> be held tonight in Joburg at the Melrose Arch</a> will be graced by 77-year-old Dembare legend Shaya who went to Joburg with his wife Agnes yesterday. Speaking about the awards, Innocent Tsumba told the publication that:
<blockquote>We have decided to recognise and give respect to certain individuals who contributed to entertainment, for lifting up the sports and we thought that we must recognise George Shaya.
I think arguably he is the greatest soccer player ever to emerge from Zimbabwe. Maybe it’s just unfortunate he played at during that time because had he played now, he could be playing for clubs like Barcelona FC or one of the big clubs in Europe.
Those who watched him live playing say the man was amazing on the pitch and the whole stadium would spend the entire 90 minutes standing cheering and enjoying the nimble footed soccer star.

Zimbabwe Achievers Awards South Africa Honor George Shaya Tonight

Radio station, Classic263 reports that soccer legend George Shaya’s right leg has been amputated.
The five-time Soccer Star of the Year award winner has been battling ill-health for quite sometime now. Late December last year there were reports Shaya was complaining of painful legs. At the time, Shaya’s wife Egnes told The Herald that the former Dynamos player was struggling to walk since his legs had started swelling. Said Egnes:
<blockquote>He just screamed and I thought something had bitten him but he thought it was cramp. Since then it’s been getting worse. He is supposed to go for an X-ray and the doctor spoke of radiotherapy. He suggested he goes for the X-ray first then they will see what the problem is. They are suspecting that it might be deep vein thrombosis. But he needs to go for the X-ray first.</blockquote>
At the time Egnes said Shaya needed to see a specialist doctor and they needed to raise US$130 for the doctor to attend to him.

Soccer Legend George Shaya's Right Leg Amputated

Harare Mayor Gomba announced yesterday that the late Oliver Mtukudzi who was declared a national hero will have the honour of having Willowvave Road renamed after him.
Arguably Zimbabwe’s most successful footballer George Shaya and veteran Chimurenga music maestro Thomas Mapfumo were also honoured by the Harare City Council for their contribution to sport and music, respectively. Gomba said Mapfumo had been given the Freedom of the city which means he will be exempt from paying rates among and other things, as defined in the city’s policy. Gomba said they are still discussing on an additional package for Mapfumo, where he will be given a residential stand which is likely to be in Cranborne. Harare City Council named Vietnam stand at Rufaro Stadium after George Shaya.

Zimbabwe football legends led by Peter Ndlovu, Benjani Mwaruwari and George Mbwando took time to visit five-time Soccer Star of the Year George Shaya at his home in Glen Norah, Harare, and donated groceries and cash. Shaya is suffering from dementia which means he quickly forgets.

Football legends donate groceries and cash to George Shaya

The Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) has unveiled the George Shaya Benefit Fund to help football legend George Shaya who is suffering from dementia. The fund will have a financial package as well as a medical fund, for the Shaya who has hit hard times of late.  Zifa president Phillip Chiyangwa personally donated $300 to the Shaya family, as he waits for the legalities and paperwork to set up the fund.
Said Chiyangwa :
<blockquote>As an association we felt it was important that we play a leading role in ensuring that someone like George Shaya gets the help he badly wants right now.
This isn’t an ordinary footballer, but one who took this game to a new level during his playing days, delighting us at a time when we were fans, and it would be wrong for football to be seen as if it is turning it’s back on such a legend.
For us this is just a start and we hope to make this a very big thing because we have to make a difference to the way football was run in this country.</blockquote>
