Matabeleland Collective leader, Jenni Williams, has urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa to apologise on behalf of Government for the killing of an estimated 20 000 citizens by soldiers during the Gukurahundi massacres in the first decade of Zimbabwe&#8217;s independence.
President Mnangagwa was then State Security Minister when the Government unleashed the North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade in the Midlands and Matabeleland provinces ostensibly to crush renegade former freedom fighters (dissidents).
Addressing journalists soon after Mnangagwa’s meeting with members of the Matabeleland Collective at State House in Bulawayo last Saturday, Williams called on Mnangagwa to issue a public apology for the massacres. She said:
<blockquote>The head of state is the person who should be able to acknowledge that the soldiers were deployed by the government and we remain committed to identifying how that acknowledgement looks and how the apology looks.
But for us, the position is not only the government to do that but our communities carrying that suffering, they have to describe that process.</blockquote>
Williams, who is also the leader of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), said Gukurahundi was different from the Rwandan genocide as the killings were sanctioned by the Government.

President Mnangagwa Urged To Apologise For Gukurahundi

President Mnangagwa is in Bulawayo to meet the civil society in the metropolitan province and make a followup of the issues he previously dealt with in the region including Gukurahundi engagement meetings, the Chronicle reports.
While in the Bulawayo the president is expected to launch a program that will enable the issuance of birth and death certificates for Gukurahundi victims according to the publication.
The President’s presence in Bulawayo during the lockdown was confirmed by Infomation Ministry permanent secretary Nick Mangwana and the agenda for his visit was further confirmed by the Justice Ministry’s secretary Mrs Virginia Mabhiza who said:
<blockquote>The issues are mostly to do with birth and death certificates for victims of Gukurahundi and we are also looking at the issue of exhumations, which is currently being handled by the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission.
Our bigger vision is to conduct a launch and His Excellency is going to launch the issuance of births and death certificates in a province of his choice in Matabeleland. We are also looking into the issues of exhumations.
We are here as a follow-up to the July meeting and this is basically a follow-up on issues that we have discussed with the civic society based in Bulawayo. This is not about Gukurahundi issues only but other broader developmental issues affecting the region. There is a lot of progress so far around the issues under discussion.</blockquote>
According to Mangwana, the President’s engagements with Matabeleland will also address the province’s past marginalisation. The meetings are set to take place this morning and the President will reportedly address the civic society and members of the press later today.

ED In Bulawayo To Launch The Issuance Of Birth & Death Certificates For Gukurahundi Victims

The Matabeleland Collective, a coalition of Matabeleland based civil society organisations, has called on the government to establish an independent commission to investigate the Zimbabwe Republic Police&#8217;s (ZRP) conduct when discharging its duties in Bulawayo.
In a statement on Wednesday, the groups accused ZRP of using <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gukurahundi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gukurahundi</a>-style policing in Bulawayo. The statement read in part:
<blockquote>Matabeleland Collective renew their request for an investigation into policing in Bulawayo especially in light of the manner in which the police use Gukurahundi style formats to do their work including tribal hatred targeting women and subjecting them to gender insensitive insults.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police cannot continue to stir up trauma by this form of policing in a region still living the pain of Gukurahundi 40 years late.</blockquote>
The civic organisations queried why there was a high number of Bulawayo residents arrested during the current COVID-19 lockdown and the infamous January 2019 fuel hike protests.
Recently, two sisters in their 30s from Cowdray Park, Bulawayo, were seized from a shopping centre, beaten with on their backs, hips, and legs for hours by police officers.
Gukurahundi is a term used to refer to deployment of the military to fight  &#8220;dissidents&#8221; in <a class="mw-redirect" title="Matabeleland" href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Matabeleland">Matabeleland</a> and <a class="mw-redirect" title="Midlands" href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Midlands">Midlands</a> in the 1980s which resulted in the death of an estimated 20,000 <a title="Ndebele" href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ndebele">Ndebele</a> people.

Civic Group Calls For Probe Into 'Gukurahundi-style' Policing In Bulawayo

The United States of America in a human rights country report released last week said the government&#8217;s failure to address the early 80s massacres that killed over 20 000 Ndebele people in the infamous genocide known as Gukurahundi, was dividing Shona and Ndebele people, The Standard reports.
The part of the 47 paged document that addresses the issue of Gukurahundi reads:
<blockquote>Unwillingness to acknowledge past atrocities or seek justice for victims continued to affect negatively relations between the Shona and Ndebele ethnic groups,</blockquote>
The report further reiterates that the tension between the two ethnicities the Shona majority and the Ndebele minority has resulted in the marginalisation Ndebeles by the Shona-dominated government according to the publication.

Failure To Address Gukurahundi Continue To Divide Shona And Ndebele Ethnic Groups - The US

<blockquote>The so-called Matabeleland Collective died on arrival because it was neither about Matabeleland nor a collective, but a scam to cover up Mnangagwa&#8217;s <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gukurahundi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gukurahundi</a> atrocities to escape accountability!
If the collapsed MatabelelandCollective was not a Mnangagwa scam, like Polad is, it would have ensured that the bambazonke Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No.2) Bill, 2019 includes extending the life of the National Peace &amp; Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) beyond 2023!
The 25 amendments in Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No.2) Bill, 2019 bring back provisions sought by Mnangagwa, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Patrick_Chinamasa" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Patrick Chinamasa</a> &amp; Paul Mnangagwa in August 2012 but rejected by the ZanuPF politburo. Also on that day, Mnangagwa rejected the NPRC!
Mnangagwa, Chinamasa &amp; Mangwana mobilised ZanuPF to reject section 251 of the new Constitution establishing the NPRC. An unhappy compromise was reached to establish it only for 10 years from 22 August 2013, the effective date of the new Constitution!
Section 251 of the Constitution provides that the NPRC will exist only for 10 years from 2013. Already six years have gone by, during which NPRC has done between nothing &amp; little to execute its mandate; after Mnangagwa, as justice minister, delayed the start of its work!
Over the last two years since it became operational, and despite s253 of the Constitution, the NPRC has done absolutely nothing to &#8220;ensure post-conflict justice&#8221; and &#8220;the provision of justice&#8221; in relation to Gukurahundi, 2008, 1 August 2018 &amp; 14-28 January 2019 atrocities!
A major reason why NPRC has not met its constitutional mandate to ensure post-conflict justice is Matabeleland Collective that has been used by Mnangagwa through <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Virginia_Mabhiza" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Virginia Mabhiza</a> to push a dummy, fully aware that NPRC&#8217;s life expires in 2023; in an act of great deception!
It&#8217;s propitious that organizations &amp; activists with a record of working selflessly for the country &amp; the people of Matabeleland have pulled out of the Matabeleland Collective fraud, to form Matabeleland Forum. They must now demand that NPRC&#8217;s life be extended indefinitely!

Speaking on the Unity Day commemorations <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa">Nelson Chamisa</a> said there was no Unity to celebrate right now because ED&#8217;s government has failed to unite a populace beleaguered by a myriad of grievances Newsday reports.
Speaking about the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Unity_Day">Unity Day</a> Chamisa said:
<blockquote>It cannot be unity when you beat up people for saying they are hungry. If doctors say they are incapacitated and they want money, you fire them, when teachers say they want money, you set dogs on them. Is that unity?
It cannot be unity when it appears there are two countries in one. Unity shouldn’t be between parties for power, but it must be about institutions and for the good of everyone, tribes, religion, all provinces, seeing there is something for them.
Unity is important, but they think it is partisan. There is no unity when you can’t resolve issues and hold free and fair elections</blockquote>

"What Unity?" - Chamisa On Unity Day Celebrations

Some victims of Gukurahundi are having a difficult time accessing identity documents as they are unable to prove to authorities that their relatives are dead.
This came to light during a mop-up exercise on the access to documentation at Matobo Rural District Council offices in Maphisa, Matebeleland South where Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission commissioner Japhet Ndabeni Ncube persuaded residents to open up.
One old woman failed to hold her tears when she narrated her ordeal before ZHRC officers excused her to compose herself. She said:
<blockquote>I had to bribe my way to get a national identity card but up to now I don’t have a birth certificate as I lost it when we were running away from Gukurahundi in Tsholotsho. When I tried to get another birth certificate, I was told to bring witnesses to confirm my father’s disappearance and death. My uncle refused to go and testify on my behalf saying he was afraid to reveal that his brother disappeared during Gukurahundi.</blockquote>
One of the traditional leaders said that authorities can make it easy for residents if they just assist them to get the national documents without subjecting them to a lot of questions that remind them about the Gukurahundi atrocities.
The traditional leader added that some still do not know where their relatives are since they were kidnapped at night by unidentified people so proving their deaths is mammoth.

Gukurahundi Victims Failing To Get Identity Documents As They Can't Prove Their Relatives Are Dead

A Bulawayo-based pressure group, Ibhetshu LikaZulu, will on <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Unity_Day" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Unity Day</a> (22 December) carry out activities in the city to remember <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gukurahundi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gukurahundi</a> victims.
Ibhetshu LikaZulu coordinator Mbuso Fuzwayo also urged the government to account for the victims of Gukurahundi who were abducted disappeared. He said:
<blockquote>While we appreciate what the government has done to try and address the issue, however, there is silence on those that were abducted.
No one is speaking to that; we want to amplify our voice on those who were abducted so that they are also accounted for.</blockquote>
Early this year, President Emmerson Mnangagwa had a meeting with <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Matabeleland_province" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Matabeleland</a> civic groups and clergy under the banner Matabeleland Collective at the State House in Bulawayo.
The government offered to facilitate the exhumations and reburials of Gukurahundi victims.
Thousands of people were killed in the 1980s genocide and the findings of an investigation into the atrocities by the Chihambakwe Commission of Inquiry were never made public.

Govt Urged To Account For Abducted Gukurahundi Victims

A prominent war veteran, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tshinga_Dube" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tshinga Dube</a>, has urged President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his government to apologise for the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gukurahundi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gukurahundi</a> massacres and compensate the relatives of the victims.
Dube made the call while speaking on the sidelines of the launch of his book, “Quiet Flows the Zambezi” in Harare on Wednesday. He said:
<blockquote>The government can choose people to perform these rituals of apology. In Africa, when someone kills your son, daughter or mother, there is always that practice of ‘kuripa’ (compensation).
That has not been done for the 20 000 people who died. Nobody has done anything about it. Unfortunately, even for those who have been assigned for national reconciliation, we have not seen much of what they are doing.</blockquote>
Gukurahundi refers to the massacre of thousands of innocent civilians in the Matabeleland and Midlands provinces in the 1980s by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Army" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA)</a>.
The massacres were carried out on the pretext of crushing a handful of former liberation fighters who were disgruntled with how post-independent Zimbabwe was being run.

Prominent War Veteran Calls For Gukurahundi Apology & Compensation Of Victims

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tshinga_Dube">Tshinga Dube</a> is expected to publicise a book where he talks partly about himself and about explosive stories like <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gukurahundi">Gukurahundi</a> and the untold story of tension in the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Army">Zimbabwe national army  during its inception</a>Sunday News reports,
Speaking about his soon to be published book, Tshinga said:
<blockquote>Basically the book is a story of a former Zipra cadre who like most of the boys grew up in a village in Matopo.
He began to taste the cruelty of colonial regime when they were flushed out of their land to a desolate area far away.
He proceeded to study in a missionary school and was influenced to the nationalist movement. He later joined and trained as a guerilla fighter and met all the hazards that go with the war.</blockquote>
Tshinga was a minister of war vets during the Mugabe era and he was ZDF company CEO for 22 years.

Tshinga Dube To Launch Explosive Book Next Month

Leman Pwanyiwa a political and civil rights activist has opined that even though the ruling party might be reluctant to implement reforms as suggested by the western community, the truth is the reforms will benefit us and not those who have interests in Zimbabwe. Writing for the Daily News Pwanyiwa said:
<blockquote>Our country must adopt compact restorative and transitional justice mechanisms to effectively deal with Gukurahundi, Murambatsvina, violent land seizures and bloody disputed elections, among others.
The legislative agenda must be revisited to make State institutions independent and strong. Electoral, media and political reforms open up democratic space to excite meaningful citizen participation. Economic policies that tame corruption must be put in place to attract much-needed domestic and foreign investments.
All this requires deliberate effort and political will from Zanu PF. 
An inclusive and honest dialogue around these reforms, and how they can be ushered in, must happen. Having done that, sanctions will naturally go away.
Reforms aren’t bad after all. They benefit us. Yes, the United States and the West have interests on Zimbabwe just like every other country, China and Russia included. But, we can also do the same — construct our own national interests on these countries using comparative and competitive advantages stemming out of our abundant mineral and agricultural wealth. What’s stopping us? In any case, that is the essence of geopolitics.
Mnangagwa knows that our politics is toxic, but he is afraid to take that bold step to fix it. He might have his reasons, political or otherwise, but national interests must come first. The anti-sanctions march flopped, but it is a wake-up call for Mnangagwa to leave office or lead the nation on the reform path. Anything outside that spells disaster for him, and sinks the country deeper into the abyss. The sooner he realises that, the better.</blockquote>

OPINION: Only Reforms Can Help Zimbabwe

A Bulawayo pressure group has expressed its concern regarding the President&#8217;s decision to build a mausoleum for former president Mugabe who died on  6 September 2019. Ibhetshu Likazulu, a Bulawayo based pressure group advocating for Gukurahundi victims’ reparation, criticized the president&#8217;s decision of building a shrine for the late former president while Gukurahundi victims remain unburied.
Calling the shrine unnecessary, the pressure group leader Mbuso Fuzwayo said it&#8217;s unfortunate that we as Africans prioritise a person over a nation:
<blockquote>It is unfortunate that we Africans prioritise an individual over a nation. When Mugabe was alive, a lot of money was spent on him and his family at the expense of the suffering masses especially those who were affected by Gukurahundi.
It is embarrassing that 36 years after independence, nothing has been done to compensate and improve their lives yet the government continues to pamper Mugabe with unnecessary things in his death.
We have got a lot of Gukurahundi victims who are not yet buried. For example, at Bhalagwe we have a whole disused mine shaft with thousands of Gukurahundi victims. Why not build a mausoleum for those people</blockquote>
Fuzwayo is one of some Zimbabweans who were not happy with the decision to built a mausoleum for the late former leader. Mugabe will be <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/15/mugabe-burial-shrine-construction-process-begins/">buried after the mausoleum</a> is completed.

Anti Gukurahundi Group Not Happy With ED's Decision To Build Mugabe A Mausoleum

The ZIPRA veterans association spokesperson Buster Magwizi has described Mugabe as an unrepentant person who wanted to wipe away Ndebele people and died without addressing the 1980s Gukurahundi massacres. Said Magwizi:
<blockquote>We hear people are mourning Mugabe’s death, but we ask ourselves, who is mourning thousands of people he wantonly killed.
Mugabe sinned against many people in Africa. Whatever the violence we see being committed by Africans against Africans was caused by Mugabe</blockquote>
Magwizi was referring to the killings of Ndebele people by the army in the early 1980s where human right groups say over 20000 Ndebele people affiliated to the late vice president Joshua Nkomo were killed.

Mugabe Was Unrepentant, He Died Without Addressing Gukurahundi - ZIPRA

ZANU PF Youth League secretary, Pupurai Togarepi has spoken against a call made by National Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda that the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission should agitate for an apology to be made to Gukurahundi victims.
Togarepi asserted that only the former President RG Mugabe and the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo know what caused the Gukurahundi conflicts and they are the one who should have apologised. He said:
<blockquote>Who is going to apologize and in what capacity? Only the Former President RG Mugabe and the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo know what led to the conflicts.
The two led Zimbabwe at that stage and in their wisdom chose not to do what the new Leadership is now pushed to do. Is this not a case of shifting blame to the one who will do it on behalf of these former leaders?
With this in mind, my conclusion is the Speaker should relook at the facts and see whether its rationale to ask someone to atone other people&#8217;s responsibilities. We were all there and why didn&#8217;t we ask those responsible to atone then?</blockquote>

National Assembly Speaker, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, has encouraged the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) to &#8220;vigorously agitate&#8221; for a national apology to the victims of the Gukurahundi genocide in the Midlands and Matabeleland provinces.
Mudenda made the call during a capacity-building workshop for the Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and the Thematic Committee on Human Rights on the mandate of the NPRC in Bulawayo on Monday. He said:
<blockquote>Fundamentally, the NPRC must vigorously agitate for the national institutional apology for the past conflicts, especially Entumbane One and Two as well as the Gukurahundi tragedy.
Let’s confess that era of conflict so that we go beyond the acknowledgement of ‘the moment of madness’.
Confession is a condition precedent for letting bygones be bygones. Once that confession is done, the spring of hope, national healing and reconciliation will abundantly germinate without any doubt.</blockquote>
Mudenda revealed that there are now three generations with no birth certificates and identity cards in the affected provinces.
Gukurahundi led to underdevelopment in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces, with most schools having no science laboratories, while roads in the provinces were bad, he said.
Gukurahundi is a term used to refer to disturbances in <a class="mw-redirect" title="Matabeleland" href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Matabeleland">Matabeleland</a> and <a class="mw-redirect" title="Midlands" href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Midlands">Midlands</a> in the 1980s which resulted in the death of an estimated 20,000 Ndebele people.
It was carried out by the North Korean trained <a title="5th Brigade" href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/5th_Brigade">5th Brigade</a> which was an elite regiment of the <a title="Zimbabwe Defence Forces" href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Defence_Forces">Zimbabwe Defence Forces</a>.
Gukurahundi is derived from a Shona language term which loosely translates to &#8220;the early rain which washes away the chaff before the spring rains&#8221;.
