Heal Zimbabwe Trust (HZT) has petitioned parliament to act on the rise in cases of politically motivated violence in the country ahead of the general elections scheduled for 2023.
The petition contains complaints of 5 000 citizens who have been victims of politically motivated violence in the past.
In its petition, HZT claimed that political violence was being fanned by the “abuse of traditional leaders’ authority” as well as hate speech by political and societal leaders. It said:

The increase in cases of politically motivated violence, intimidation, hate speech and intolerance which has claimed lives, property and livelihoods of citizens across the length and breadth of Zimbabwe has become a regular occurrence.
The interventions by the government, state institutions and bodies mandated to ensure peace, national healing, social cohesion and the prevention and mitigation of violent conflict have been inadequate and failed to tame the beast of violence.
These ills, if left unaddressed, threaten to tear apart the prospects of a peaceful, tolerant general election in 2023.

Heal Zimbabwe Trust Petitions Parliament Over Rise In Political Violence

According to Heal Zimbabwe Trust Executive Director Rashid Mayiya, 4 unidentified people stormed their offices and threatened the people prest at Heal Zimbabwe with unspecified action for their supposed “unpatriotic opposition to the government”. Mahiya shared the following thread detailing what transpired at their offices today and what might have ignited it:
<blockquote>Attack Heal Zimbabwe Offices Today at 12:47 Heal Zimbabwe was besieged by four unidentified people (2 women and 2 men) who threatened concerted unrelenting brutal and unspecified action against the organisation for what they termed unpatriotic opposition to the government.
Today’s attack came after one Taurai Kundishaya visited Heal Zimbabwe Offices the previous day (22-03-21), took pictures and urged Zimbabwe Zimbabweans to converge and protests at the organisation’s gates.

Mahiya did not share further information on the issue if they reported the issue to the police or if the unidentified people caused some physical damage to anyone or any property.

4 Unidentified People Attack Heal Zimbabwe For "Unpatriotic Opposition To The Government"

The MDC legislator <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Priscilla_Misihairabwi-Mushonga">Priscilla Misihairabwi Mushonga</a> was heckled by the crowd that was attending the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Heal_Zimbabwe_Trust">Heal Zimbabwe Trust</a> Constitution amendment discussion.
Misihairabwi Mushonga stood her ground and told the wild crowd that they were behaving like Zanu PF and even told them that’s why they threaten to burn people(seemingly referring to Thokozani Khupe’s incident at Tsvangirai’s funeral)

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested 14 people in Kambuzuma while 20 were arrested along Seke Road.
This was said by Heal Zimbabwe (HZT), a non-profit peace-building organisation whose mission is to prevent and transform conflicts in Zimbabwe with a particular focus on social justice and human rights protection.
Those who were arrested are currently detained at Harare Central Police Station.

14 People Arrested In Kambuzuma, 20 Along Seke Road - Heal Zimbabwe

Heal Zimbabwe Trust (HZT) has said that it is worried about the violence which occured at the primary elections for both Zanu-PF and MDC-T. The organisation is worried that this violence may spill into the 2018 harmonised elections. In a statement, the group said,
<blockquote>HZT is dismayed by the continued disregard of political tolerance among political parties as the nation braces for the much awaited 2018 elections. Hardly a week ago, violence and intimidation rocked Zanu PF primary elections as party supporters clashed over reports of vote rigging and manipulation of voter registers.
Heal Zimbabwe views the lack of political tolerance as a recipe for political violence. It is also Heal Zimbabwe’s view that tolerance, pluralism are principles central to the attainment of peace and form core pillars of democracy.</blockquote>

Heal Zimbabwe Worried About Violence In Zanu-PF, MDC-T Primary Elections

<blockquote>Heal Zimbabwe strongly condemns the unlawful arrest of <a class="_58cn" data-ft='{"tn":"*N","type":104}' href="https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/thisflag?source=feed_text&amp;story_id=1075650819203922">#ThisFlag</a>Movement Founder, Pastor Evan Mawarire. Pastor Mawarire was arrested while preaching at his church on 24 September 2017, and is being charged with subverting a constitutionally elected Government as defined in Section 22 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. The charge emanates from a video he circulated on Saturday 23 September 2017 on social media over Zimbabwe’s worsening economic crisis.
Heal Zimbabwe notes that the infringement of citizens’ rights such as unlawful arrests and detentions are a violation of citizens’ fundamental human rights as provided for in the constitution. The arrest of Mawarire comes hardly a year after the Government solemnly committed to foster a culture of promoting and protecting human rights during a United Nations Human Rights Universal Periodic Review council that was held in Switzerland in November 2016.
Heal Zimbabwe implores the Government to desist from using arbitrary arrests as a way of silencing citizens from expressing their fundamental human rights and freedoms such as freedom of expression. Section 61 of the Constitution stipulates that (i) Every person has the right to freedom of expression, which includes (a) freedom to seek, receive and communicate ideas and other information (b) freedom of artistic expression and scientific research and creativity. Instead of using unlawful arrests against citizens, Government must rather address the economic challenges bedeviling the country which have led to the spiraling of prices on basic commodities and shortage of fuel. The organization further calls upon the Government to curb the mushrooming black market that is creating unnecessary panic and anxiety amongst the populace.
