In a tragic development, three members of the same family succumbed to COVID-19 within hours of each other.
Studio 7 Gweru-based correspondent Kudzanayi Musengi lost his wife and both her parents to COVID-19 on the same day.
According to Studio 7’s Thomas Chripasi, Musengi’s wife Vimbai Nhutsve Musengi and both her parents succumbed to COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Nhutsve family spokesperson Martin Nyadani told Studio 7 that the family has been devastated by the triple deaths. He said:

We lost three family members at the same time. The first to pass away was Mrs Nhutsve, followed by Vimbai and then around 7 pm, Mr Nhutsve passed away. It has now been confirmed that the three succumbed to COVID-19.
</blockquote>
Nyadani added that Musengi’s in-laws were buried in Chirumanzi this Thursday and Vimbai will be buried in Mvuma on Friday.
Vimbai was well-known for fighting for the rights of women in Gweru and was also a journalist and author.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reiterated that journalists provide an essential service during this COVID-19 crisis and should, therefore, be assisted to conduct their work.
In a statement on Thursday, police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police commanders in all provinces have been notified of the force’s position regarding journalism. The statement read:
<blockquote>The ZRP reiterates that journalists provide essential services and should be assisted to conduct their work. This message has been passed to Police Commanders in all provinces.
In Harare, journalists should contact Harare Operations on the contact number (0242)748836 for immediate assistance or PGHQ National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp number 0712800197.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, ZimLive editor Mduduzi Mathuthu has gone into hiding after police late on Thursday swooped on his home in Bulawayo, with a search and seizure warrant.
Mathuthu is being accused of keeping and manufacturing subversive materials and inducing Zimbabweans to engage in public violence on July 31.
On Saturday last week, NewsDay senior reporter and HStv head news and current affairs Blessed Mhlanga was arrested alongside Ruvimbo Nyikadzino of Sly Media at a police roadblock and charged with miscellaneous misdemeanour.
Mhlanga was only released after the intervention of Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.

Journalists Provide An Essential Service & Shouldn't Be Harassed - Police

The government-controlled Herald newspaper has been criticised for publishing Samantha ‘Gonyeti’ Kureya’s physical address. The publication published the address in its physical paper as well as online in a <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/08/31/herald-reporter-gonyeti-stage-managed-abduction/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">story where it discredits her abduction</a> as having possibly been stage-managed.
In its article titled “<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/has-comediennes-case-mojo-gone-yet/">Has comedienne’s case mojo Gone Yet?</a>” The Herald reveals Kureya’s physical address as it describes her abduction.
Bustop TV, which Kureya works for tweeted its shock at the publication of the comedienne’s private information:

The Herald Criticised For Publishing Gonyeti's Physical Address In Abduction Story

In an interview, MDC-Alliance senoir politician Tendai Biti referred to a journalist interviewing him as pathetic and a “Zanu-PF commissar masquerading as a journalist”.
The comment resulted in a local publication, Mail and Telegraph, accusing Biti of making punching bags out of journalists.

Documentary filmmaker, Hopewell Chin’ono, has said that Zimbabwe’s media industry is left with just a handful of quality journalists and that the industry is dying. In an opinion piece titled “Zimbabwe’s journalism disaster” Chin’ono identified poverty as one of the main reasons
He claimed that he saw the controversial local religious leader, Magaya, bribing some journalists while he was working on a documentary film about churches.
<blockquote>A struggling young man or woman working for state media will break the professional ethics code to carry on receiving that pay cheque, and so too will a poor journalist working for private media.
Poverty is a tough thing to live with especially in a country like Zimbabwe, it forces many to do anything to survive.
How can a 40-year-old journalist renting two rooms in Kuwadzana take on the likes of Mthuli Ncube and Emmerson Mnangagwa with the same confidence that Christiane Amanpour deploys when interviewing Donald Trump and many other world leaders?
That is why our political leaders get angry when they are asked deep and meaningful questions on international television, they are used to mediocre journalism.
The types that asks, “…is there anything else you would like the nation to know your Excellency?
So it is in the best interests of the political, business and religious elites to keep journalists poor in order to control them.
I saw with my own eyes editors from both the state and private media receiving bribes from Walter Magaya at his offices when I was co-producing a documentary on Pentecostal churches for eNCA.</blockquote>
