Some of the late former president Robert Gabriel Mugabe’s relatives seemingly do not want the old man to rest in peace amid revelations that a fresh war has erupted over his burial.
Mugabe died in Singapore in September 2019 aged 95 and was buried at his Kutama homestead in Zvimba after his widow Grace Mugabe and her children rejected the government’s offer to have his remains interred at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
Mugabe had made it clear while on his deathbed that he did not want to be buried at the national shrine, his family claimed.
The late strongman died a bitter man, according to his nephew Walter Chidhakwa, following a spectacular fallout with his ruling Zanu PF after a military coup that ousted him in 2017.
Tinos Manovengere is said to have approached Chief Zvimba seeking to have Grace censured amid revelations that some still want Mugabe’s remains reburied in Harare.
According to leaked WhatsApp messages seen by The Standard, one of Mugabe’s prominent nephews consulted a Harare-based lawyer on the legal implications of the case now before Chief Zvimba.
However, others said Mugabe was an international figure and exhuming his remains would be an embarrassment for the country.
They said the late Zanu PF leader’s children had the right to decide, warning Chief Zvimba to be cautious.
Mugabe family spokesperson Leo Mugabe said he was not aware of the WhatsApp messages and the case against Grace.
He said the Manovengeres were his uncles but said they had nothing to do with Mugabe’s Karigamombe family.

Fresh War Over Mugabe Final Resting Place

The body of the former president of Zimbabwe,<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Robert Mugabe</a>, was finally laid to rest on Saturday in his rural village of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kutama" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kutama</a>, Zvimba.
Hundreds of mourners gathered for the burial, which was initially intended to be a private family ceremony.
Mugabe’s widow, Grace and his children accompanied the casket – covered with Zimbabwe’s green, yellow, red and black flag. A priest who spoke at the funeral said:
<blockquote>Our hearts are bleeding because we have lost our father. This is a man who made use of the gifts he was given by God. This man was an asset, he was not a liability.</blockquote>

Robert Mugabe Buried At His Rural Home

The burial of the late former President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Robert Mugabe</a> is currently underway at Kutama Village in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zvimba" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zvimba</a>, Mashonaland West province.
Mugabe died on the 6th of September in Singapore at the age of 95 after a long battle with cancer. He had been in and out of Gleneagles Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.
The government had been building a mausoleum at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Heroes%27_Acre" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">National Heroes Acre</a> in Harare for Mugabe’s burial but his family had a change of mind on Thursday.

Mugabe's Burial Currently Underway In Zimbabwe

Security has been tightened as the family of Zimbabwe’s late national hero, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Robert Mugabe</a>, prepared for his burial in Zvimba on Saturday.
Mugabe’s body was set to be laid to rest at Kutama Village, where he grew up after his family rejected the government’s offer to build a special grave at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Heroes_Acre" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">National Heroes Acre</a> in Harare.
The majority of the mourners were barred from entering the courtyard as Mugabe’s body awaited a private burial with only approved guests and funeral parlour vans allowed.
In a statement, ZANU PF spokesperson, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Simon_Khaya_Moyo" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Simon Khaya Moyo</a>, called the private burial “most unfortunate”. He added:
<blockquote>… we indeed respect the wishes of families of deceased heroes, hence we are saddened when manoeuvres that border on political gimmicks begin to unfold on an issue concerning an illustrious liberation icon.</blockquote>
Mugabe died on 6 September 2019 in Singapore at the age of 95. He had been out of office for close to two years after his former comrades ousted him in a coup, having ruled Zimbabwe with an iron fist for 37 years.
He was bitter until his last breath and reportedly vowed in his last days that his erstwhile allies should not pontificate over his dead body.

The government has given in to the demand by the family of the late former <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">President Robert Mugabe</a> to have his body buried at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kutama" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kutama Village</a> in Zvimba, his rural home.
In a statement on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nick_Mangwana" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ndavaningi Nick Mangwana</a>, said:

The family of the late former President R.G Mugabe has expressed its desire to proceed with his burial in Zvimba.
In line with Government Policy to respect the wishes of families of deceased heroes, the Government is cooperating with the Mugabe family in their new position.

ZimLive reports that former <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">President Robert Mugabe’s</a> body will be buried in Zvimba in a private ceremony this weekend after the Mugabe family decided against a National Heroes Acre burial.
The body could leave the Blue Roof Mansion on Thursday for Zvimba, with burial likely to be done on Saturday.

Mugabe To Be Buried In Zvimba This Weekend - Report

The late former President Robert Mugabe will be buried at his home village, Kutama in Mashonaland West province.
This was revealed by the late national hero’ nephew, Leo Mugabe in an interview with AFP.
Mugabe will be buried early next week, either on Monday or Tuesday, and it will not be at the National Heroes Acre. Said Leo:
<blockquote>His body will lie in state at Kutama on Sunday night.., followed by a private burial – either Monday or Tuesday – no National Heroes Acre. That’s the decision of the whole family.</blockquote>
Mugabe died in Singapore last week at the age of 95. Reports indicate that he was very bitter since he was ousted in a military coup in November 2017.
He told close family members that he did not want to be buried at the Heroes Acre to prevent his “traitors” from pontificating over his dead body.
The late hero’s body arrived at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Wednesday afternoon.

Mugabe To Be Buried At Kutama Next Week

Some villagers in Kutama Village in Zvimba district are not comfortable about speaking openly on the death of former President Robert Mugabe who died in Singapore on Friday.
Zvimba district, where Mugabe was born and bred, is in Mashonaland West province, about 100km from Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare.
NewZimbabwe.com was told by some villagers that they could not speak of Mugabe’s legacy as they were afraid of reprisals by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s supporters. A villager only identified as Steven had this to say:
<blockquote>Since Mugabe was removed from power in November 2017 there has always been tension among villagers with others openly declaring that it was their time to benefit from the new administration.
We got agriculture inputs on time and around here it’s electrified because of him, we also benefited from the irrigation.
Some of the villagers are bitter because of Mugabe’s policies which left them in abject poverty.
Remember when he was in power some wanted him to leave early but that was not the case.</blockquote>

Some Kutama Villagers Claim That It's Now Their Time 'To Eat'

Leo Mugabe, nephew to the late former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe has said that his uncle was bitter since 2017 when he was removed from power until the time of his death this week.
Leo added that his uncle was hurt by the fact that those who toppled him were his most trusted lieutenants. Speaking to reporters on Saturday outside Mugabe’s homestead in Kutama village, 85 km (52.8 miles) from the capital Harare along the Robert Mugabe Highway, Leo said:
<blockquote>He was bitter. You can imagine, the people that you trusted, the people who were guarding you, the people that were looking after your security are the same people that turn against you.
He was very bitter and it dented his legacy, … it was not an easy thing for him. His health deteriorated quickly after his ousting and he was hurt that those who removed him never apologised.</blockquote>
Reports suggest that Mugabe snubbed the National Heroes Acre burial before he died because he did not want his successor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his colleagues to preside over his funeral.
Mnangagwa is said to have sent delegations to Singapore to try and persuade Mugabe to change his mind over the matter.
Mnangagwa has since declared Mugabe a national hero and said that the nation will be mourning him until he has been buried.
