Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe chief executive Obert Muganyura said yesterday that the<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/05/16/zimpapers-gets-tv-broadcasting-licence/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"> recently issued Zimpapers TV license</a> is not a tv broadcasting license like the one held by ZBC. The license is a content distribution license which is similar to the one issued to Multichoice Zimbabwe and Kwese TV.
The cost of the license is $173,000.
<blockquote>Early this year we flighted an advertisement inviting those intending to provide broadcasting services that do not require frequency allocation to submit their applications to the authority. We gave examples of such services as content distribution, web-casting and video on demand.
That advertisement excluded applications for terrestrial television licences which in any case use frequencies. Zimpapers applied for a content distribution licence which essentially entails the distribution of content aggregated within or outside Zimbabwe and the delivery of that content is via satellite.
Essentially what Zimpapers applied for is a licence to provide services like DSTV and Kwesé which is different from a terrestrial television broadcasting licence.</blockquote>

However, in order to get the “free” decoder, a customer needs to sign up for a 24-month contract, where they will be paying a monthly subscription fee of $20.30 instead of the usual $29 per month.

According to the terms and conditions, a user will get full access to all 77 channels for the first 12 months. However, for the remaining 12 months, subscribers will have access to limited channels.

Kwese TV  Lowers Monthly Subscription Fee, Offers Free Decoders To Civil Servants

Econet launched “Kwese TV Everywhere” which allows subscribers to watch Kwese TV on 5 different devices using one subscription.
Announcing the service, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe CEO Douglas Mboweni, said:
<blockquote>We are excited to launch the beginning of the Mobile TV experience we have been talking about. It marks the total convergence of our Telecommunications, Media and Technology (TMT) business model.</blockquote>
Mboweni said Econet has rolled out more than 575 fixed Wi-Fi hotspots and 240 mobile sites throughout the country, in collaboration with its sister company ZOL to enable Kwese TV’s feature similar to DStv Now which allows customers to use their mobile phones to watch the same channels simultaneously watched at home.

Kwese TV to launch e-commerce platform

Econet founder Strive Masiyiwa has announced the launch of Kwese TV in Zimbabwe and has given Zimbabwean subscribers an extra 30 days for free following 2 weeks of service disruption due to legal issues.
In a Facebook post Strive wrote:
<blockquote>Kwesé TV Zimbabwe finally joined the Kwesé TV revolution that is sweeping across Africa, after the High Court confirmed last Friday that its license was valid. As a gesture of goodwill, we have decided to give Zimbabweans whose service was disrupted for two weeks an extra 30 days for FREE.</blockquote>
Last Friday, Kwese was granted permission by the High Court to continue broadcasting until the Supreme Court rules on the appeal filed by the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ).
Kwese TV has faced massive resistance from BAZ, the regulator,  from the onset. After Econet announced the launch of Kwese TV, the chief executive officer of the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe,  Obert Muganyura immediately announced that Dr Dish’s broadcasting licence had been cancelled and that Kwese TV did not have permission to operate.
<a href="http://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/09/08/full-high-court-judgement-kwese-tv-vs-broadcasting-authority-zimbabwe/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Dr Dish responded by filing an urgent application at the High Court Challenging BAZ’s decision to cancel its broadcasting licence.</a> High Court judge Justice Charles Hungwe reversed BAZ’s decision and issued a provisional order allowing Dr Dish and Kwese TV to continue operating pending the determination of the matter by the court.
Feeling aggrieved by Justice Hungwe’s decision, <a href="http://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/09/13/bazs-grounds-appeal-high-courts-decision-allow-kwese-tv-dr-dish-operate/">BAZ filed an appeal at the Supreme Court.</a> The appeal had the effect of suspending, Justice Hungwe’s provisional order. <a href="http://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/09/14/kwese-tv-seeks-permission-operate/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Dr Dish then filed another urgent application at the High Court seeking permission to continue operating until the Supreme Court appeal was heard and resolved</a>. In the meantime, Kwesé TV and Dr Dish then stopped broadcasting.  However, because of Friday’s High Court ruling, Kwese TV and Dr Dish can resume operating.
In the latest ruling Justice Charles Hungwe ruled:
<blockquote>I am satisfied that the applicant has satisfied the requirements for the grant of leave to proceed with its operations as set out in the order of this court in HH-598-17 dated 8 September 2017 in which the letter by the second respondent was to all intents and purposes suspended pending the final determination of the rights of the parties. In the result I make the following order:
1. Leave to proceed in terms of the judgment of this Court in be matter HH-598- 17 be and is hereby granted.
 2. The respondents shall bear the costs of this application. </blockquote>

Kwese TV offers extra 30 days free viewing to Zim subscribers to make up for lost time

Strive Masiyiwa announced the launch of “Kwesé FREE TV” bouquet which offers a minimum of 5 channels for free even if someone does not pay subscription fees.
The 5 free channels are; Kwesé FREE Sport (KFS), Kwesé FREE Entertainment (KFE), African News, any national broadcaster channel and Flow TV. In a Facebook post, Masiyiwa wrote:
<blockquote>Now after my very busy trip to New York and Geneva, I flew straight to South Africa, and spent last week getting an update from the Kwesé team. I think the most exciting development for me this week was our decision to create what we call the “Kwesé FREE TV” boutquet.
__A minimum of 5x channels are FREE at all times even if someone does not have money on their decoder subscription!
The five “ALWAYS ON” channels are:
# Kwesé FREE Sport (KFS): the biggest sports channel in Africa, which shows live English Premier League, and NBA games.
# Kwesé FREE Entertainment (KFE): A new general entertainment channel which will show latest premium shows including kids, movies, series, and African entertainment. This goes live in January.

Kwese FREE TV bouquet, 5 free channels even if you don't pay  subscription

Contrary to some reports circulating on social media, Kwese TV’s content distributor, Dr Dish has not won the case against the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe. No decision has been given yet on the case. Dr Dish executive chairman, Nyasha Muzavazi, confirmed that the court cases are still pending.
Kwese TV had to suspended broadcasting last week after BAZ filed an appeal at the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe challenging High Court judge Justice Charles Hungwe’s decision to allow Dr Dish and Kwese TV to continue broadcasting until the matter was fully resolved. The appeal had the effect of suspending, Justice Hungwe’s provisional order.
Dr Dish then filed another urgent application at the High Court seeking permission to continue operating until the Supreme Court appeal was heard and resolved. The case is still pending.

Kwese TV has NOT yet won legal battle against BAZ

Kwese TV launched in South Africa through a partnership with Netflix on Thursday last week. Kwese is offering a service known as Kwese Play which allows viewers to stream Netflix and 100 other streaming channels starting from about R129.
South African viewers will be able to “select only the channels they want to watch, and pay only” for these. In South Africa, payment for Kwese Play will be in rand while customers will not be able to pay using credit and debit cards.

Kwese TV launches in South Africa, partners with Netflix

In a statement yesterday, Zimpapers spokeswoman Ms Beatrice Tonhodzayi, Zimpapers denied claims by Dr Dish that they are interested in partnering with Kwese TV. She said that Kwese TV had actually approached them not the other way round.
Said Tonhodzai:
<blockquote>Let us make it clear that Econet Media’s Kwese TV actually approached us and not the other way round. We held several discussions, which later collapsed for reasons we will not disclose. In these negotiations it was clear what each party was bringing to the table. It, therefore, comes as a surprise why our name is being smeared in the media in a matter that we have no involvement in whatsoever.</blockquote>

'Kwese TV approached us not the other way round', Zimpapers responds

Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere has come out in support for Kwese TV which the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) said was not licenced to operate in Zimbabwe.
In a tweet he wrote that Kwese is not a bad idea and asked why Government should continue supporting DSTv. Said Kasukuwere:

Kasukuwere comes out in support of Kwese TV

Strive Masiyiwa’s Kwesé TV will soon be launching in Zimbabwe and Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is reported to be distributing decoders to its employees in anticipation of the launch. According to daily publication, NewsDay, the government has agreed to license Kwese TV although the formalities are yet to be completed.
Lovemore Nyatsine, executive assistant to the group chief executive officer told NewsDay:
<blockquote>It’s still premature for me to comment because there are certain procedures that are being followed. We are actually not licensed, as in that manner, certain processes need to be done.</blockquote>

Kwese to launch in Zimbabwe

Sean Combs’ REVOLT TV was introduced to the African market earlier this week when Kwesé TV launched its full entertainment and sports bouquet in Ghana, Zambia and Rwanda. Revolt will air exclusively on Kwesé TV’s channel 605.
Speaking on the deal, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Econet Media, Joseph Hundah said:
