The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Local Government said that the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_United_Passenger_Company" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe United Passenger Company’s (ZUPCO)</a> bus management scheme is gobbling $51 million per month.
Presenting the Committee’s report on the 2020 national budget, Committee chairperson <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Miriam_Chikukwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Miriam Chikukwa</a> claimed that the money allocated for the subsidy was not enough. She said:
<blockquote>The Local Government ministry planned to undertake projects aimed at poverty reduction, improved sanitation and standards of living in line with vision 2030 growth objectives and to this end $638 million was allocated in the 2030 national budget.
Eighty-five per cent of the amount ($638 million) is earmarked for Zupco bus hire management and the current bus hire is $51 million and if the current trend is to go on, the $540 million will only last for 10 months.</blockquote>
ZUPCO buses were reintroduced earlier this year following deadly riots in January that were caused by an unprecedented fuel price hike which triggered a sharp increase in bus fares.
The buses are heavily subsidised with commuters in urban areas being charged “only” $1 while privately-owned buses charge over $5 for the same trip.

Govt Spends $51 Million Per Month On ZUPCO Subsidy

Zanu PF Harare Province inter-district conference recommended for the expulsion of Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province Miriam Chikukwa and three other senior members from the party.
The conference also resolved that President Emmerson Mnangagwa be endorsed as Zanu-PF’s President and First Secretary at the party’s extraordinary congress next week. The conference also endorsed Mnangagwa as the sole Zanu PF Presidential candidate for the 2018 general elections.
They also replaced Shadreck Mashayamombe with Douglas Mahiya as Harare Province political commissar. The resolutions will be tabled for considerations at the forthcoming Zanu PF extra-ordinary conference set for next week in the capital.

Zanu PF Harare Province recommends Minister's expulsion, promotes Mahiya

Miriam Chikukwa, the Minister of Provincial Affairs for Harare Province has urged businesses to construct hotels in Mount Hampden.  She said this as she was touring the site for the new capital city.  Chikukwa said the hotels, would the ease the travelling for legislators when parliament is in session.
Chikukwa said:
<blockquote>I am happy with the developments here. It is a good project. I am happy with the way the road infrastructure is being put up to suit the standards of the new city.
We call upon other businesses to complement the efforts by the developer and set up hotels so that MPs will not have to travel to the current capital Harare.</blockquote>
