Former president of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA), Peter Magombeyi, was not poisoned when he was allegedly abducted by suspected State agents last year, latest toxicological results show.
After he was picked up about 30 kilometres from Harare three days after the alleged abduction occurred, five doctors namely Trust Zaranyika, Aaron Musara, Andrew Mataruse, Walter Mangezi and Shingirirai Meki signed an affidavit confirming that Magombeyi urgently required further functional brain imaging and toxicological evaluation.
Magombeyi had claimed that he was tortured and electrocuted by his alleged abductors, who snatched him from his rented home in Harare’s high-density suburb of Budiriro.
The High Court granted an order following an application by lawyers and doctors who were representing Magombeyi to allow him to seek medical assistance outside the country since the required services are not available in Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwe Independent has established that a range of toxicological tests conducted on blood and urine samples extracted from Magombeyi show that the ex ZHDA leader had no traces of poison and alcohol in his body.
The series of toxicological tests to determine whether Magombeyi was poisoned during the time he was reportedly abducted were conducted by Neo Maimela, Chief Forensic Scientific Officer employed by the Botswana government and the results showed that there were no “… poisons, illicit drugs or controlled substances in the blood samples.”
The government has accused Peter Magombeyi of stage-managing the alleged abduction.

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Hospital_Doctors_Association" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA)</a> president, Dr <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Dr_Peter_Magombeyi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Peter Magombeyi</a> has resigned. In a letter addressed to the organization’s secretary-general, Dr Magombeyi said he was stepping aside for personal reasons. Below is his resignation letter:
<blockquote>I cannot thank all the doctors enough for the opportunities the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) has provided me.
Working with you has been incredibly instrumental in my personal growth and I will never forget the struggle we go through every day, trying to come up with a functional health delivery system that benefits all Zimbabweans and our welfare as doctors. ALUTA CONTINUA!
I regret to inform you that I am resigning from my position here, immediately as the President for ZHDA for personal reasons.
I do not intend to inconvenience you with this news, and I hope you will accept my most sincere apologies in making Fnday, the 24th of January 2020 my last day as the President of the aforementioned association I know this is unexpected, but am happy to assist the association in the replacement process to help alleviate the transition.

Dr Magombeyi Leaves The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Lawyers_for_Human_Rights" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)</a> has condemned the surveillance on<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwean_Hospital_Doctors_Association" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"> Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA)</a> acting president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Dr_Peter_Magombeyi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dr Peter Magombeyi</a> when he was at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Thursday on his way to South Africa.
Below is the full statement:
<blockquote>ZIMBABWE Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) condemns the malicious and illegal actions of some unidentified people who intimidated Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) leader Dr Peter Magombeyi at the Robert Mugabe International Airport as he left the country to seek and access specialist medical services in South Africa.
In what amounts to an act of surveillance, two unidentified people on Thursday 26 September 2019 took pictures and/ or recorded video footage as Dr Magombeyi at the boarding gates as he was departing. The two unidentified airport personnel did not explain the motive of their actions.
Earlier on, Dr Magombeyi had been frustrated on several occasions by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, in open defiance of a lawful court order, preventing him from leaving the country to access urgent specialist medical care which would threaten his right to health and right to life.
ZLHR strongly condemns the acts of surveillance and violation of his right to privacy. As a victim of enforced disappearance, the purpose of this sadistic action was to further intimidate, instil anxiety and fear in him.
Similar acts of surveillance, intimidation and targeting human rights defenders have been recorded in the recent past. These have culminated in serious life-threatening security incidents such as abduction and enforced disappearance.
The unsanctioned taking of pictures and recording of videos of a victim of abduction and enforced disappearance without their consent has the effect of reliving the memory of his abduction and ill-treatment.
It can only be concluded that the continued persecution of Dr Magombeyi is an indication that people who ill-treated him and violated his rights, who are still at large, may still be trailing him.
ZLHR remains concerned that ZRP was prepared to delay the departure, offering to provide security to Dr Magombeyi outside the country, although ZRP had failed to take urgent action to protect Dr Magombeyi prior to his abduction.
Dr Magombeyi had previously reported a case of receiving threatening messages over the phone. Although he provided the police with all the necessary details such as the contact number and the messages the police did not swiftly investigate this incident and apprehend the suspect.
Further, on 28 August 2019, Dr Magombeyi posted on his Twitter handle that he had received a message from on an Econet subscriber number +263 786 645 911 threatening his enforced disappearance.
It is disturbing to note that the same mobile phone number which sent a threatening message to Dr Magombeyi is the same number that was used to send threatening messages to Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions leaders Peter Mutasa and Japhet Moyo on 14 and 15 August 2019.
Although police reports were filed at Harare Central Police station, law enforcement agents are yet to apprehend the culprit(s).
The complete lack of accountability of those responsible for perpetrating violations against human rights defenders is of special concern given the pervasive culture of impunity in Zimbabwe.
ZLHR calls upon the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, ZRP Commissioner-General to carry out an immediate, thorough and impartial investigation into the abduction, disappearance and ill-treatment of Dr Magombeyi and bring to account those persons responsible for the abduction and the violation of his fundamental rights.</blockquote>

Human Rights Lawyers Condemn Acts Of Surveillance & Intimidation Of Dr Magombeyi

State-controlled broadcaster in Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation has said that it was denied access to Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association Acting President, Dr Peter Gabriel Magombeyi by his lawyers.
The medical doctor was found disoriented on the night of Thursday 19 September in Nyabira, near Inkomo Army Barracks, about 35 kilometres north-west of Harare after missing since Saturday 14 September.
When he spoke to VOA Studio7 last night, Magombeyi said that he had lost track of what had really transpired. He said that he needed some time to gather what happened.
Magombeyi is also reported to be refusing to speak to authorities who are conducting investigations to establish what happened to him.
Investigations come at a time when there are various theories to his disappearance with human rights defenders and opposition political parties saying the government was behind Magombeyi’s disappearance and those of several other citizens.
On the other hand, the State alleges that there is a third hand conducting abductions to tarnish the image of the government.

ZBC Denied Access To Dr Magombeyi

The president of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Peter Magombeyi, is reportedly refusing to speak to authorities thereby stalling debriefing efforts.
This was revealed by the Ministry of Information who posted on Twitter on Friday 20 September giving an update on the doctor who was found on Thursday night. The ministry said:

Magombeyi who went missing on Saturday 14 September was found in Nyabira, near Inkomo Army Barracks, about 35 kilometres north-west of Harare where his purported abductors reportedly dumped him.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Human Rights Lawyers have claimed that authorities are denying Magombeyi access to a lawyer, which is a right enshrined in the constitution.
Team Pachedu, an opposition political activism online group, has also observed that Magombeyi has the right to remain silent or to speak and also to be informed of the consequences of speaking or remaining silent thereof.
Other commentators have however observed that Magombeyi does not need time to recollect his memory since he has already narrated to the media what transpired when he went missing.

ZANU PF Youth League boss, Pupurai Togarepi, has claimed that the opposition MDC and or the United States of America, know where the missing president of Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Dr Peter Magombeyi is and should return him.
He wrote before reports that <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/19/just-in-dr-magombeyi-has-been-found/">Magombeyi had been found.</a>
Togarepi further said that the party led by advocate Nelson Chamisa is celebrating Magombeyi’s disappearance together with its “handlers”. He added:
<blockquote>Having said that, we find it utterly disgusting that there are some elements who want to use the disappearance of Peter for political mileage, no, we should never sacrifice our conscience as a nation on the altar of expediency, we are better than that and the polarisation resident in our nation should not blind us from seeing the obvious. The MDC-A, more than anyone else think they stand to benefit from Peter’s disappearance and should tell us where they hid him.</blockquote>
Togarepi added that ZANU PF could not risk its re-engagement agenda as the disappearance painted a dark picture on the country.
He observed that violating human rights activists when a UN envoy was in the country, was tantamount to shooting self in the foot.
Observers and MDC, however, are adamant that it is the state that has conducted a spate of abductions and torture of citizens recently.

"MDC-A Think They Stand To Benefit From Magombeyi’s Disappearance"

Medical students at the University of Zimbabwe have unanimously agreed not to attend the graduation ceremony scheduled for Friday 20 September. They said that the missing president of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association was one of their own since he is a medical doctor and also a student expected to graduate with the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) this year.

FULL TEXT: UZ Medical Students Unanimously Decide Not To Attend Graduation Ceremony Tomorrow

Zimbabwean poet, Ngoni Paradzahova, has published an emotional and investigative poem over the missing president of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Dr Peter Magombeyi. The medical doctor went missing on Saturday 14 September and his whereabouts are still unknown.
He also speaks of the still missing journalist, Itai Dzamara. Itai Dzamara, when loosely literally translated means “Do Until”, are concepts used by the poet to also suggest that anyone making people disappear had done so to many people now.
The poet says that authorities should thoroughly investigate the matter and bring back the doctor in whatever state he is, that is, safe, ill or dead for closure to his family.
He also said that that Magombeyi was not only important to his family as he provided medical services to the whole nation.
He challenged spiritual leaders (prophets) to also help in tracking the missing doctor.
Meanwhile, the state has since announced that investigations are already underway to establish Magombeyi’s whereabouts.

WATCH: Emotional & Investigative Poetry Over Missing Medical Doctor

High Court Judge, Justice Clement Phiri, has granted an order allowing Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) to peacefully march this afternoon.
The order stated that the doctors could march from Parirenyatwa Hospital to within a radius of 20 metres from the vicinity of Parliament this afternoon.
ZHDA had approached the High Court this morning seeking a court order prohibiting the police from obstructing or interfering with the march.
Officer Commanding Police Harare Central District, Commissioner-General of Police Godwin Matanga and Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Cain Mathema were cited as respondents.
The order comes when the police have been blocking doctors’ marches around the country.
Doctors intend to march over their missing acting president, Dr Peter Magombeyi who disappeared on Saturday 14 September.
His disappearance followed some threats over the phone from unknown persons.

High Court Sanctions Doctors March Over Missing Magombeyi

The Zimbabwe Government Radiographers Association (ZiGRA) has joined calls for the release of Dr Peter Magombeyi who was abducted in Budiriro on Saturday night by three men.
In a statement on Monday, ZIGRA vowed to move in unison with other health workers until Dr Magombeyi is home safe and sound. The statement reads as follows:
<blockquote>The Association is greatly alarmed and disappointed with the abduction of Dr Peter Magombeyi, a passionate colleague and devoted labour leader.
It is disheartening to note that such lawlessness and intolerance still exists in society. There is no greater joy in life than saving lives and as such, we demand the immediate release of Dr Magombeyi without failure.
Labour activism is not a threat to society or the government. It is a blessing, a platform which ensures that the needs of the employees are catered for in a civilised and legal way.
As a leader of the ZHDA representing the interests of doctors and other health professionals, Dr Magombeyi is one of the many hungry, overworked and underpaid health workers.
All we are asking for is a living wage so that we can carry out our duties without fear, favour or reprisal. His cries are just an echo of the tens of thousands of voices he represents.
ZiGRA stands resolute with the grievances being aired by ZHDA and we are ready to fight for the immediate release of our colleague.
We call upon the responsible authorities to guarantee the safe return of Dr Magombeyi to his family and the arrest of the perpetrators.
