The president of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, Peter Mutasa (PM) has hinted that workers will soon be embarking on a series of protests over poor salaries and working conditions.
He made the remarks during an interview with NewsDay’s Midlands Reporter Brenna Matendere (ND), during which he also bemoaned state brutality on workers and the citizenry. Below are excerpts from the interview.
<blockquote>ND: A couple of weeks ago, you threatened that workers would embark on protests, what is the position now? 
PM: We made a call for workers and citizens to liberate themselves through collective action. We also indicated that we are embarking on mobilisation of the workers around the country. This is going on and we are almost there. We need all workers to unite first around uniform demands. In the past, we had some discord, especially with some unions in public services, especially Zimbabwe Teachers Association who supported Zimdollar salaries. Out of a nasty experience, all unions are now agreed on our demands and all are mobilising members towards collective action. An announcement of the dates and form is coming any time.
Unless our demands are met, we are proceeding with serious concerted national strikes and peaceful protest action. Everyday will be a day of protest and every space an arena of struggle until we shrug off the oppressive chains of a brutal dictatorship. The Zimbabwean government is now just like the colonial regime and even worse than (the late former President Robert) Mugabe’s last days. It is sad that we ended up having such a government 40 years after independence.</blockquote>

"Everyday Will Be A Day Of Protest," Workers' Union Plan A Series Of Protests

In an interview with NewsDay, Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) secretary-general Japhet Moyo said that warned President Emmerson Mnangagwa not to appoint people with corruption records in his new cabinet.
Said Moyo:
<blockquote>We expect the new President to reform because if he follows on the footsteps of his predecessor (former President Robert) Mugabe then workers will think that we wasted our time singing at the Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfield and whatever the army did, because if his government policies do not change, then nothing is going to change. Investors only come into a country where one can go to a court of law and get justice, and they do not like countries where their money is not safe and their properties can be taken away from them.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, National president of the Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe, Obert Masaraure, said they expect Mnangagwa’s government to remove Lazarus Dokora’s policies such as the Teachers Professional Council which Masaraure said was meant to “punish” teachers. Said Masaraure:
<blockquote>We do not want teachers to be de-registered willy-nilly. We want independent teachers who are not victimised and salaries above the poverty datum line.</blockquote>
Masaraure said the new government should do away with abuse of schoolchildren, teachers and the use of school property at Zanu-PF rallies.

"Avoid appointing people with corruption records": ZCTU advises Mnangagwa

A report titled “Working Without Pay, Wage Theft in Zimbabwe” by the research division of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has revealed a lot of disturbing facts about the work environment in Zimbabwe. The research division is called the Labour and Economic Development Research Institute of Zimbabwe (LEDRIZ) 
According to the 36-page report:
<blockquote>– at least 120 000 workers across the country worked without pay between 2015 and last year.
– 40 000 workers had gone for three years without pay
– 80 000 had not received wages on time.
-350 000 formally employed workers have sunk into abject poverty
– Executives are earning up to 769 times more than shop floor workers.
– 22 778 workers in 20 urban local authorities had not received their salaries
-12 000 workers were not being paid in the agricultural sector
-7 500 workers were not being paid in the security sector
-7 500 workers were not being paid in the automotive indutry</blockquote>
LEDRIZ said bosses in the private sector were receiving between US$10 000 and US$21 000 per month during the review period, in contrast to US$26 for the lowest paid formal sector worker, 20 577 lower than the highest paid CEO.

120 000 workers have gone unpaid in 3 years - ZCTU Report

The <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Congress_of_Trade_Unions" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions</a> (ZCTU)  has claimed that its operations have been crippled by the  <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Revenue_Authority" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra)</a> garnishee of $50 000 from the trade union’s education fund in September.  The trade union believes that this move was orchestrated by Zanu-PF in an effort to nullify the influence their influence.
ZCTU  secretary- general, Japhet Moyo has since made frantic efforts to have the garnishee reversed and has since engaged Zimra.  Excerpts from one of his letters read:
<blockquote>Kindly take notice that the failure to remit the taxes is not deliberate, but it is arising from the failure by our affiliate unions to pay their subscriptions. Our affiliates are also owed by companies who are also not remitting trade union dues and some not paying their employees. Despite this difficult situation, the ZCTU has been remitting monthly the little amount paid by its affiliates
Our partners are likely to classify us as a risk organisation and also portray our country as risk in doing business.
We request for the uplifting of the garnishee order to enable us to conduct our business. Your urgent intervention is greatly appreciated</blockquote>
