A man impersonating a doctor was arrested at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo on Tuesday after he wrote an unusual prescription mentioning Lacto and various fruits like apples and grapes.
Prosper Mpofu, 29, was dressed in a white coat and stethoscope and had been consulted by a patient referred by a church friend.
Thabani Ndlovu, whose wife has a heart condition, took his wife to Mpofu, believing he was a qualified medical professional. Said Ndlovu (via <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/fake-doctor-busted-after-prescription-of-lacto-grapes-and-cucumber/">ZimLive</a>):

…We came this morning looking for him, but he was not around, he told us to wait. We then decided to join the queue at the outpatient department so that when he arrived, we would be ready.
We managed to see the doctor who was in the rooms, and when we were done, he called us to tell us he was at the hospital. He took us to one of the rooms that is when we saw hospital authorities now surrounding us.

Copies of the strange prescriptions issued by Mpofu began circulating on social media, revealing numerous errors such as incorrect dosages and misspelt drug names.
The spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Bulawayo Province, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed Mpofu’s arrest.
Mpofu had previously appeared in court in 2022 on assault charges, during which he claimed to be a Year 5 medical student.

Bogus Doctor Arrested At Mpilo Hospital After Prescription Of Lacto, Grapes And Cucumber

A former nurse from Mbizo 5 in Kwekwe has been convicted of illegally practising as a medical doctor and performing four surgeries in Gokwe.
As reported by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/nurse-charged-for-performing-surgeries-on-patients/">The Herald</a>, Admire Munyeki appeared before Kwekwe Magistrate, Grace Tupiri, facing four charges of violating the Medical Act by falsely presenting himself as a medical practitioner and engaging in unauthorised medical practice.
He carried out surgical operations on four people who had approached him seeking medical help.
Munyeki pleaded guilty to the four counts and was remanded in custody to Thursday for sentencing.
The court heard that on 05 January 2024, Munyeki purported to be a dental practitioner when he was approached by Stella Sibanda who had a toothache.
Munyeki extracted Sibanda’s two teeth and she started experiencing some pain.
Sibanda went to Samuchembu Health Centre where she was examined and the matter came to light.
On the second count, on 01 March 2024, Munyeki circumcised Daison Chelo who had approached him complaining of some pain in his private organ.
Chelo also started experiencing some complications and he reported to Samuchembu Health Centre where the offence was discovered.
On the third count, Munyeki also misrepresented himself as a medical doctor and operated on Taimon Ndege who had a hernia.
Ndege developed some complications and was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital where the offence was discovered.
Munyeki also pretended to be a medical practitioner and carried out surgery on Erisha Siakachoma’s neck and removed a growth.
Siakachoma later went to Samuchembu Health Centre.
The police arrested Munyeki at a funeral wake in Chirape, Gokwe, on Monday last week.

A man from Kwekwe pretended he was a doctor and did surgeries on people in Gokwe. He was actually a nurse but acted like a medical practitioner. He performed surgeries on four people without permission. The patients suffered after the surgeries. The man admitted to the charges and will be sentenced soon. He was caught at a funeral in Gokwe. It's important to always go to real doctors for medical help.

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (PGH) says it has always made efforts to safeguard the public from unscrupulous people who masquerade as its employees with malicious intentions to fleece unsuspecting members of the public.
This comes after three people were arrested at the hospital for impersonating doctors this month.
In a statement, PGH said that in 2023 alone, 33 offenders were picked up by its Security Department, while this year from January 2024 to date, 11 suspects have been nabbed. The hospital said:

Bogus Doctors, bogus tutors who extort prospective student nurses and thieves who steal from both staff members and patients are some of those criminals who have been picked up and handed over to the police.
Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals is a vast institution with close to 400 Doctors of all professional levels and a total staff establishment of close to 4000.
Unscrupulous people take advantage of our vastness and complexity to carry out nefarious activities. 
Fortunately, our Surveillance Teams remain vigilant and have always apprehended these unruly elements who try to penetrate and abuse our systems.
</blockquote>
PGH said investigations it has carried out so far have established that the 3 recently arrested fake Doctors did not manage any patient.
It vowed that surveillance teams shall continue to flush out criminals bent on abusing public trust in the institution.
The three fake doctors who were arrested at the hospital in April 2024 are Andrew Mapulanga (52), Blessing Nyanzira (24), and Douglas Garikayi Mutoredzanwa.
Mapulanga was caught by an alert security officer at Parirenyatwa Hospital on 15 April. His arrest followed the discovery of articles intended for criminal use.
Mutoredzanwa was arrested on 23 April after his bizarre behaviour revealed that he was bogus. It is alleged that while analyzing an X-ray in front of a patient, he held it upside down. His arrest at Parirenyatwa Hospital revealed an outstanding warrant related to a 2019 case.
Nyanzira was arrested on 25 April as he attempted to bypass a staff security checkpoint during the lunch hour break.
All three men appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court and their cases are yet to be finalised.

11 Fake Doctors Arrested At Parirenyatwa Hospital

Another fake doctor was arrested at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals barely a fortnight after a man masquerading as a gynaecologist was nabbed by an alert security officer at the same hospital.
On April 15 this year, Andrew Mapulanga (52), was arrested at Parirenyatwa Hospital and subsequently appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi facing a charge of possession of articles for criminal use.
Less than two weeks later, on 25 April 2024, Blessing Nyanzira, (24), was arrested at the hospital as he tried to walk past a staff security checkpoint during the lunch hour break.
According to court papers seen by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/is-pari-now-the-hub-where-fake-doctors-operate-yet-another-fake-doctor-nabbed-at-parirenyatwa/">H-Metro</a>, on Thursday, Claude Nyangani, who is a Loss Control Supervisor at Parirenyatwa, was on patrol during lunch hour, when he met Nyanzira, as he went through a staff security checkpoint.
The suspect was wearing a scrub jacket inscribed “Blessing Nyanzira” and had a stethoscope on his neck.
It is alleged that Nyangani monitored Nyanzira before requesting his particulars. He was presented with two identity cards, bearing different names from the one on his jacket.
Nyangani became suspicious and, after further enquiries, Nyanzira identified himself as a medical doctor who was on his way to the Harare CBD to meet up with Dr Ndurukwa, from the Zimbabwe National Army.
Prosecutors further alleged that Dr Ndurukwa was contacted and he indicated he knew Nyanzira but not as a medical doctor.
The accused then changed his story and told hospital security that he was a student doctor from the UZ.
This prompted Nyangani to contact the university and was told that the accused never enrolled at the institution.
Nyanzira initially appeared in court on Saturday. He was expected back in court this Monday for bail considerations.
The State was, however, opposed to his release saying there was overwhelming evidence against the fake doctor such that he might abscond.
Another suspected fake doctor, Douglas Garikayi Mutoredzanwa, was arrested at Parirenyatwa Hospital on 23 April 2024.
He allegedly exposed himself after he was seen holding an X-ray upside down, analysing it in front of a patient.
Mutoredzanwa has an outstanding warrant of arrest for another 2019 case.

Impersonators Pose As Doctors At Parirenyatwa Hospital

A 52-year-old was arrested last week for masquerading as a gynaecologist at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200025942/bogus-gynaecologist-nabbed">NewsDay</a>, the accused, Andrew Mapulanga appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi following his arrest on Thursday.
He is facing a charge of possession of articles for criminal use and he was remanded in custody to this Monday for bail application.
Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi told the court that on April 15 this year, Mapulanga went to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals hanging a stethoscope on his neck and moved up and down the corridors at the hospital.
It is further alleged that a security officer, Julia Shambare, suspected him to be a fake doctor because of his suspicious movements.
Shambare then alerted her colleague Alexander Munera who apprehended Mapulanga and took him to ZRP Parirenyatwa Post.
The police searched Mapulanga and found him in possession of a stethoscope, a business card indicating that he is a gynaecologist and a photocopy of Charity Mungofa’s Ordinary Level certificate.

Fake Gynaecologist Arrested At Parirenyatwa Hospital

A bogus Zimbabwean doctor was arrested in South Africa last week for issuing fake COVID-19 certificates.
Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) spokesperson Christopher Tsatsawane told the Daily News on Thursday that Christopher Kutoka was issuing the fraudulent medical certificates to the employees and was caught red-handed at a nearby café issuing the said medical certificates.
Tsatsawane said Kutoka was arrested for fraud and contravening Section 39(1)(a) of the Health Professions Act, 56 of 1974, for issuing medical certificates as a medical practitioner whilst not being registered with the Council.
Kutoka was among eight South Africans who were arrested last week after they were found with fake sick notes in Benoni, Gauteng. Said Tsatsawane:

We want to warn the public that practising whilst not registered with the HPCSA constitutes a criminal offence in terms of Section 39(2).
We call on the public to ensure that the doctor they visit is registered with HPCSA by demanding to see the registration certificate, which must always be displayed on the walls of the said doctor.
The certificate always bears a practice number, and people should contact us on 012 338 9300 if they were not sure whether it was genuine or not.
During the arrest, Kutoka was found to be in possession of 38 blank medical certificates, a stamp, negative COVID-19 declaration forms and various other fraudulent medical documents under the name of Dr MLA Modisane, adding that it was further established that Kutoka was previously working at the practice of Dr Modisane in Daveyton.
One of the arrested employees had previously submitted eight of the fraudulent medical certificates, while seven were arrested for having submitted 31 of the fraudulent medical certificates.

Fake Zimbabwean Doctor Arrested In SA For Issuing Fake Covid Certificates

A Bulawayo-based medical doctor was arrested for allegedly practising without a valid licence from the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe.
Emmanuel Mucheni (36) of New Parklands suburb appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Rachel Mukanga facing one count of defying the Health Professions Act.
Mucheni pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was remanded out of custody to 12 April.
It is alleged that the medical practitioner issued a prescription to Chenjerai Kudzurunga at 8th Avenue Emergency Clinic without a valid practising certificate.
It is further alleged that Kudzurunga took the prescription to Medi Health Pharmacy located along Joshua Nkomo Street before he tendered it to the pharmacist, Azeem Gaibi, intending to purchase the prescribed medicine.
Gaibi discovered that the prescription was issued by Mucheni and made a police report leading to his arrest.

Doctor Arrested For Practising Without A Valid Licence

A 37-year-old man has been arrested for masquerading as a medical practitioner and operating a surgery in Kwekwe, named the Medical Oasis Surgery, without proper requirements.
Emmanuel Machaya (37) popularly known as Dr Togara was arrested by police detectives acting on a tipoff that he was operating without being registered.
A team made up of the Ministry of Health and Child Care officials and those from the Zimbabwe Medical Association (ZIMA) investigated Machaya before alerting the police leading to his arrest.
It was also established that Machaya dropped out of college before he could complete his sonographic course.
He was granted $5 000 bail when he appeared before Kwekwe Magistrate Samukelisiwe Gumbo facing charges of contravening the Health Professions Act.
Machaya was facing three counts; operating without a practising certificate, masquerading or presenting himself as a member of ZIMA and operating an unregistered health institution.

Fake Doctor Arrested In Kwekwe

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Leonard Mwale (24) in connection with a case of rape which occurred on 4th November 2020 in Chitungwiza.
The complainant (34) posted a message on a WhatsApp group seeking help for a stomach ailment on 4th November 2020.
A group member then connected her to the suspect who lured her to his home. She was given a tablet and an injection which rendered her unconscious.
She later gained consciousness and found the suspect in the process of raping her, thereby raising alarm.
A report was made to police leading to the arrest of the suspect and recovery of various medicines and injections which include promethazim, rabies vaccine, diclotine, oxytoxin, hydrocotisol, citimile, cetriaxim, promethamide metopramide, gentermide, aminophyline and cloridrato.
Coincidentally, there were ten women who were waiting to see the suspect who has no medical qualifications to the effect.
Members of the public are warned against divulging their particulars and seeking help through WhatsApp groups and visiting self-proclaimed medical practitioners/ prophets at their private homes.
At the same time, we appeal to anyone who might have been abused in a similar manner by the suspect to report at any nearest police station.

FULL TEXT: Bogus Doctor Arrested For Rape, Stash Of Fake Medicines Recovered

Admire Chisi, a 25-year-old Ruwa man who was on Tuesday arrested for practising medicine without qualifications, was able to convince his neighbours that he was a genuine doctor working at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
Chisi’s neighbour, Brian Chivona told The Herald that the whole neighbourhood was satisfied that the young man, who stays in Zimre Park with a friend and a sister, was a medical doctor as he went to Parirenyatwa Hospital daily.
Meanwhile, Harare lawyer Wellington Pasipanodya of Manase &amp; Manase Legal Practitioners urged the health profession to introduce more stringent security measures to detect masquerades in time. He said:
<blockquote>This type of mischief is common to many professions in Zimbabwe. What needs to be done is to introduce an electronic tag system to identify each hospital staff member using identity tags.
Further, all doctors must be issued with practising certificates which can be produced upon demand by the general public.
Lastly, ordinary accountability systems like staff meetings, duty rosters and random spot checks of medical personnel against the database of the Health Professions Authority can be done to prevent a repeat of this act.</blockquote>
Another lawyer, Caleb Mucheche, accused the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals management of negligence and dereliction of duty and called for an overhaul of the HR and security departments. Said Mucheche:
<blockquote>Failure to detect such a bogus doctor for that long smacks of gross negligence or dereliction of duty by hospital management, human resources and security departments.
The bogus doctor committed a serious criminal offence by falsely posing as a doctor and endangering human lives at such a big and busy hospital especially now during coronavirus.
There is a need for an overhaul of management, human resources department and security departments at that hospital to prevent future incidents like this.</blockquote>
