The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed an accident involving a CAG Travellers and Coaches bus travelling from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls on Friday, 03 November in which scores of people were injured.
Earlier reports <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/11/03/passengers-trapped-in-bus-following-highway-accident/">had indicated that several passengers were trapped inside the bus</a> when it overturned around the Mphahambe area between the Umguza Toll Gate and Tyce Hurst.
In a statement issued on Monday, 06 November, the ZRP said 40 people were injured when the bus veered off the road and overturned before landing on its right side.
Police said the accident occurred at the 34-kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road at around 10 AM. Reads the statement:

The ZRP confirms a road traffic accident in which 40 people were injured when a CAG bus with 60 passengers on board veered off the road and overturned before landing on its right side at the 34-kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road on 03/11/23 at around 1000 hours. The injured were admitted to Mpilo Hospital.

The cause of the crash has not been revealed but overspeeding has often been cited as one of the major causes of bus accidents in Zimbabwe.

40 People Injured In CAG Bus Accident

A CAG Travellers and Coaches bus travelling from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls has reportedly been involved in an accident and several passengers are believed to have been trapped inside.
According to a <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/passengers-trapped-in-bus-following-highway-accident/">Chronicle</a> report, the accident occurred around the Mphahambe area between the Umguza Toll Gate and Tyce Hurst.
Details about the accident are still sketchy but rescue teams were reportedly working frantically to save the trapped passengers.
Again, it is not yet clear if there were any deaths although a number of passengers are said to have been injured.

Passengers Trapped In Bus Following Highway Accident

The Government says it will soon introduce a new law to curb road traffic accidents that have killed hundreds of people so far this year.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona Mhona said that the Government will soon gazette a new Statutory Instrument on measures to curb the road carnage.
He said the law would ensure the right age requirement for bus drivers is met while fixing the maximum speed for buses, among other measures.
Mhona made the remarks in Dotito, Mashonaland Central province last week after visiting the scene of the CAG bus accident that claimed seven lives. He said:

The law will make sure buses that are brought into the country are fixed in a manner that makes sure they do not go above 100km/hr.
We have excitable drivers who are also inexperienced and underage. We will address all this in our new law that is coming soon.

Mhona also announced that the soon-to-be-introduced plastic discs will reduce a massive backlog of driver’s licenses. He said:
<blockquote>
It will be acceptable in 27 countries in and out of SADC. There is a code that shows everything about the driver and on the 19th of this month, there will be an official launch of the license. It will also reduce the making of fake driver’s licenses.
We had a backlog of over 600 000 driver’s licenses and this will ensure we bring this to an end. We were having problems with licenses.

Govt Mulls New Law To Curb Road Accidents

Police have released the names of six people who were killed in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on 10 June 2023 in Dotito at the 181-kilometre peg along the Harare-Mukumbura Road.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the six victims have been identified by their next of kin. They are:

Romeo Nyapfere of Empowerment, Willovale, Harare,
Shamain Nyoka of Gorejena Village, Dotito, Mt Darwin,
Stella Chikadaya of Kabhareta Village, Kandeya, Mt Darwin,
Fackson Chiungu, a one-week-old infant of Kabhareta Village, Kandeya, Mt Darwin,
Kosva Nawero of Rujeko, Glendale,
Aurthur Nheta of Kararira Village, Chiswiti, Mukumbura
</blockquote>
Asst Comm Nyathi urged rivers to be safety conscious and regularly check vehicle tyres to ensure that they meet road conditions.
He also implored bus operators to ensure that public service vehicles do not exceed their stipulated load capacity to safeguard lives on the roads.
The accident when a CAG bus travelling towards Harare burst a front tyre resulting in the bus veering off the road to the left before overturning and landing on its right side.

Police Release Names Of CAG Bus Accident Victims

Seven (7) people were killed while forty-five (45) others were injured in a road traffic accident involving a CAG bus that occurred in Dotito on Saturday morning.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the accident was a result of a front tyre burst that caused the bus to veer off the road before it overturned and landed on its side. ZRP said in a statement:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 10 June 2023 at around 1240 hours at the 181-kilometre peg along Harare-Mukumbura Road where seven people were killed whilst 45 others were injured.
A CAG bus travelling towards Harare burst a front tyre resulting in the bus veering off the road to the left before overturning and landing on its right side.
As a result of the accident, five people died on the spot whilst two others died on admission at Mt Darwin District Hospital.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Mt Darwin District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.

Another fatal traffic accident on Saturday claimed the lives of three (3) people and left fifteen (15) others injured at the 137-kilometre point along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.
Police said a Toyota Hilux vehicle carrying 17 passengers veered off the road to the left side, overturned, and landed on its left side.
The bodies of those who died were taken to the Kadoma General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations while the injured were also taken to the same hospital where they were receiving treatment.

Seven Killed, 45 Injured In CAG Bus Accident

CAG Travellers Coaches says the passenger who was forced to drop off from one of their buses between Hwange and Victoria Falls at night had threatened to attack and stab the bus crew.
Video showing a man who had boarded the bus in Hwange to Victoria Falls being forced to disembark the bus by the crew went viral on social media, prompting the transport operator to comment about the incident.
The man had an altercation with the bus crew allegedly for not paying his fare and he was later forced to drop off at a Truck Inn along the way.
In a statement, the CAG Travellers Coaches management said the man was violent. Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>
What we have gathered is that when the man boarded the bus, he did not pay his fare and it was only noticed during ticket inspections by the crew.
They then asked him for the fare but he became violent and even attempted to stab the bus crew with unidentified sharp objects that he was in possession of.
Fearing for their safety and of other passengers, the bus was later stopped and they decided to let him disembark from the bus and another altercation ensued. 
He was then forced off the bus at a Truck Inn along the way not in a bushy area as earlier reported.
We prioritise and value customer care and the safety of our passengers. We cannot have other citizens who violate the rights of others. At one time, one of our buses was once robbed and that is why we mostly consider the safety and security of our passengers.
We were not sure about the motive behind this man’s refusing to pay his fare.

In December 2021, five armed robbers pounced on a CAG Travellers Coaches bus at the 325km peg along the Harare-Chirundu highway.
The robbers undressed all passengers before escaping with the clothes and US$19 050, R2 000, $690 and K1 137 in cash, and other valuables.

Passenger Forced To Drop Off CAG Bus At Night

Victoria Falls villagers on Saturday had a CAG Travellers bus accident to thank as they took several tonnes of free meat from the carcasses of three elephants that were killed in the accident.
A CAG Travellers bus travelling to Victoria Falls rammed into a herd of elephants, killing three of the animals on the spot.
The accident occurred about 35km outside Victoria Falls, just after 5 AM on Saturday near Mbizha turn off along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road.
The bus suffered extensive damage but all 18 passengers and the bus crew were not injured.
Passengers were switched to another bus and proceeded with their journey.
Villagers from nearby Masikili and Mbizha villages, as well as some from as far as Lupinyu (about 20km away), some from Victoria Falls City, Chikandakubi and Chenamisa gathered at the accident scene to get a share of the meat.
According to The Sunday News, some of the villagers came on bicycles, cars and scotch carts while some boarded public transport from Victoria Falls.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority rangers and police officers were on the scene monitoring the situation.
The bus driver, Daniel Mapfumo, said he could not avoid hitting the jumbos because they appeared “suddenly” in the middle of the road. He said:
<blockquote>
I suddenly saw the elephants and applied breaks while swerving to the left.
There were three groups so as I avoided the first, I saw another herd ahead.
The three were in the middle of the road and suddenly they turned at once, giving their back to the bus and they were hit at once.

Meanwhile, ZANU PF Hwange District Coordinating Committee chair Matthew Muleya urged drivers to be careful when driving along the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo road. He said:

Animals cross from the national park to communities so drivers should be cautious so that we save lives.
These buses travel at night and we urge them not to speed on this road.

Victoria Falls Villagers Stampede For Free Meat As Bus Rams Into Elephant Herd

A CAG bus travelling to Victoria Falls hit three elephants, killing them on the spot. However, all 18 passengers and the bus crew were not injured.
According to <a href="https://twitter.com/Vic_Falls_Live/status/1510501187824594945">VicFallsLive</a>, the incident occurred on Saturday morning in the Matetsi area between Hwange and Victoria Falls on the 35-kilometre peg.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the accident. Said Farawo:
<blockquote>
Fortunately, no human casualty was reported, but those three elephants died.
Since it was still dark, the driver might have not spotted them on time, so braking on time could’ve become a challenge for him.
</blockquote>
Farawo added that the cause of the accident that happened in a wildlife marked zone was not yet known.
The driver of the bus, Daniel Mapfumo, managed to control the bus and narrowly avoided hitting trees in the process, before bringing the bus to a halt 50 metres from the carcasses. Said Mapfumo:

I suddenly saw the elephants and applied breaks while swerving to the left. There were three groups so as I avoided the first, I saw another herd ahead.
The three were in the middle of the road and suddenly they turned at once, giving their back to the bus and they were hit at once.
</blockquote>
A witness Arnold Sibanda who was driving behind the bus when the accident occurred, commended Mapfumo’s driving skills. He said:
<blockquote>
It was early in the morning because the bus left Victoria Falls at 5 AM.
This is a crossing area for elephants and he encountered a large group that was crossing in the direction of the community.
The driver tried to avoid the first herd by swerving to the left.
He narrowly missed a tree and he redirected the bus back to the road, but there was another herd that was in the middle of the road as it was crossing.
He tried to avoid hitting the second herd, but there was no chance.
The bus hit the three elephants, but the driver worked hard to save lives and control the bus until it stopped.
I was driving at 90km per hour behind the bus which means it was travelling at almost the same speed.

Victoria Falls-bound CAG Bus Ploughs Into Three Elephants

Many people are feared dead or injured after two buses from CAG collided about 10 km out of Bulawayo this Friday morning.
<a href="https://iharare.com/pics-many-people-feared-dead-after-two-cag-buses-collide-near-bulawayo/">A witness who refused to be named</a> said the accident happened just after 8 am. The two buses reportedly left the rank in Bulawayo at the same time chasing a ZUPCO bus. Reported the witness:

The buses collided when they were trying to block the way for a ZUPCO bus which they were racing against.
