A sex worker from Zhombe, in Midlands Province, was bitten by a snake while she was being intimate with a “client” in a bush.
The incident occurred at Joel Shopping Centre when the sex worker had taken her client to a nearby bush for a session.
The lady, whose name could not be established, is admitted at Zhombe Mission Hospital where she is said to be in a stable condition.
The local traditional leader, Chief Weight Ndabezinhle Gwesela, confirmed the incident. He said:

It is true there was a woman who was bitten by a snake while having sex with her boyfriend in the bush. I heard the reports and I am told she is now recovering at the hospital.
</blockquote>
Chief Gwesela recently said poor harvests over the last farming season have pushed many girls in Zhombe into sex work and early marriages. He said:
<blockquote>
What is worrying is these girls will be working for as little as a dollar or even a plate of sadza.
It is happening as people are facing hunger. So, they will be trying to make quick money thereby risking their lives.
The situation is bad in Zhombe and it has pushed many girls into prostitution and early marriages. The situation is forcing girls to turn to immorality.
As you are aware this is a gold-rich area and the illegal gold panners are now taking advantage to lure the young girls with money.

Ward 10 Junior Councillor Sithembinkosi Ncube said child prostitution was widespread in her ward. She said:
<blockquote>
We have Joel Growth Point in our ward where child prostitution is rife.
Some of the girls were expelled from school for untoward behaviour and they turn to sex work.
Girls from the ward have become wild as they are lured with money by illegal gold miners.

Sex Worker Bitten By Snake While Being Intimate In The Bush

A commercial sex worker was robbed and killed by two clients she had offered sex to in Bikita, Masvingo Province, on Thursday.
Police said that the victim, aged 24, had offered her services to the two men, who after satisfying their appetites, demanded the money they had paid her, assaulted severely her, and took the money.
The woman died the following day as a result of the injuries she suffered during the assault. Police said:

The ZRP is investigating a murder case where a woman (24) was attacked by two unknown male suspects whom she had offered sex at a charge of US$20 at Makaya Village, Bikita, on 17/11/22.
After the act, the suspects allegedly demanded the money they had paid for the services before severely assaulting the victim with sticks and robbing her of US$20.
The victim succumbed to the injuries sustained on 18/11/22.

In another murder case, police in Epworth arrested Innocent Zamura (34) for allegedly killing a 22-year-old man after he saw him walking with his ex-wife. Police said in a statement:

On 17/11/22, ZRP Epworth arrested Innocent Zaruma (34) for a murder case in which he attacked his ex-wife, Talent Simba (23), and Surance Sithole (22) after he had found the two walking together near Mabvazuva Secondary school in Epworth, Harare on 16/11/22.
The suspect stabbed Surance Sithole once in the stomach before dragging his ex-wife to an unknown place, leaving the victim with protruding intestines.
The victim was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Two Men Rob And Kill Sex Worker In Bikita

A Macheke white garment prophetess under the Nyenyedzi Nomweye Nguwo Tsvuku says she been a sex worker for the past 8 years without abandoning her “spiritual calling”.
38-year-old Madzimai Cathrine Bvumbe recently told Manica Post that she has been juggling between satisfying her ‘clients’ between the sheets and those at her shrine.
Speaking during a media tour organised by the National Aids Council (NAC), Madzimai Cathrine said she turned to thigh vending due to years of desperation. She said:
<blockquote>I am not proud of it, but I have been in prostitution for years due to desperation. In fact, I only rely on regular clients who contact me on my phone for meeting arrangements.
Prostitution is a risky business. You can’t wish this on anyone, even your worst enemy. Sex workers are at risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections.
In addition to that, interaction with strangers put them in harm’s way. Some are maimed while others are killed during the course of duty.</blockquote>
Madzimai Cathrine revealed that she almost lost her left ear during a scuffle with a client over non-payment of her services.
She also disclosed that she got married in 1999 but unfortunately parted ways with her husband in 2011.
She has to put food on the table for her three children and send them to school.
Madzimai Cathrine said she wakes up early to rush to her shrine to attend to her clients.
She then comes back later in the day to change her church robs into sexually appealing clothes in preparation for her other clients. Said Madzimai Cathrine:
<blockquote>I am convinced that ndakatumwa naMwari (God sent me). It is God’s plan for me to be interacting with these ladies and imparting His Word unto them. It is not by mistake that I am into sex work.</blockquote>

'Prophetess By Day, Sex Worker By Night'

A married 33-year-old woman from Macheke, Mashonaland East province, has turned into commercial sex work to raise her tuition fees, putting her life, marriage, and that of children at risk.
The mother of two said she had since turned to target truck drivers plying the Harare-Mutare highway in transit to neighbouring Mozambique in a bid to raise US$500 per semester at the Women’s University in Africa (WUA) where she is studying.
She said her wish is to start an income-generating project that can sustain her and her small family and quit sex work she says was her last and only option left.
Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com during a recent media tour to Mashonaland East province that was organised by the National AIDS Council (NAC), the woman said:
<blockquote>I am a student and I am also into sex work. I am also a mother, I have got a husband.
The challenge that is there is the issue of university fees which I pay in United States dollars.
The issue of tuition forced me into sex work because my unemployed husband does piece jobs in South Africa.
He earns little money, and, therefore, can’t even afford to look after us or pay for my fees.</blockquote>
She also revealed that she currently owed her university nearly US$1 000 in unpaid fees and had doubts if she could enrol for her industrial attachment scheduled during the next semester.
The woman said her husband doesn’t know that she is into sex work and at times she pleads with her parents to lie that they have paid for her fees. She added:
<blockquote>Sex work is a risky business. One day I know I might even get caught by my husband and it will not end well. I really need to stop sex work and lead a normal life.
I still love my husband and my family. Leaving my kids behind every day, locking them inside the house stresses me a lot. It’s not an easy job.</blockquote>

Married Woman (33) Turns To Sex Work To Raise University Fees

Zimbabwe’s widely reported economic challenges made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdowns have left sex workers across the country in dire straits.
Some of the sex workers last Friday said that they were seriously considering quitting the oldest “profession” for good.
Sex workers in Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland East provinces told journalists on a National Aids Council (NAC)-organised media tour that just like any other sector, “thigh vending” was no longer rosy.
In Dema, Seke district in Mashonaland East sex workers said they now resorted to bartering their services with maize or beans.
Speaking to reporters at Dema growth point on Friday, one sex worker said:
<blockquote>We charge US$5 for short time, but if push comes to shove we can accept payment in the form of food.
I can have sex for a bucket of maize, especially in this time of COVID-19.
We are even accepting to sleep with men for US$1 because it’s no longer that rosy out there.</blockquote>
The sex workers were attending a Key Affected Populations session meant to reduce HIV and STIs infection convened by NAC.
District AIDS coordinator for Seke Florence Nyandoro said apart from sexual and reproductive health training, they were also training sex workers on financial education. She said:
<blockquote>We also make sure that these women are trained in finance education so that they come up with income-generating programmes.
However, this model Key Affected Populations is targeted at sex workers with the aim of reducing HIV and STI infections.</blockquote>
Nyandoro said the HIV prevalence rate in the Seke district was 12.7%.
In Macheke sex workers appealed to authorities to reopen clubs and bars.
Priviledge Manyasha, an 18-year-old sex worker in Macheke said business was at a standstill. She said:
<blockquote>We are in dire straits. Our business has come to a standstill. We appeal to authorities to reopen clubs and bars.
We used to come to this place [Chibhazi], but these days the police are after us making life difficult for us.</blockquote>

Many Sex Workers Contemplate Quitting 'Profession' For Good

A sex worker based in Mutare only identified as Joyie recently received US$15 000 from a client who had hired her for the night.
According to Manica Post, Joyie’s client, whose identity could not be established, was scruffy, clad in a dirty tattered pair of black jeans, a black T-shirt and rugged shoes suggesting that he is an illegal gold panner. Joyie’s colleagues said:
<blockquote>We were queuing up for clients as usual outside our lodging that night. Business was slow and not promising. This guy approached us and asked me to spend the whole night with him.
He was looking scruffy and I couldn’t agree to his request, so did a couple of my colleagues before he approached my friend, Joyie.
We heard him telling her that he had US$15. He only said 15 so we all assumed that he was saying he had US$15. They went upstairs and the following morning Joyie told us of the ‘golden handshake’.
She screamed and we were all startled by the noise. We gathered in the corridor to hear the news. One of Joyie’s friends who had also shunned the client fainted.
To be honest, we were all shocked. Joyie flaunted the money on her bed and asking us to take her pictures.
The man told Joyie that he was adding more zeros to his $15 offer and gave her a breakdown. He said US$5 000 was meant for her lobola, the other US$5 000 was for her upkeep, while the remaining US$5 000 was for her car.
She immediately left the room around 9 am, fearing that she would be robbed. She told me that she intended to buy a car at a local car sale before travelling to Bulawayo.</blockquote>
Manica Post said efforts to contact Joyie on her provided number proved fruitless as it was unreachable but pictures in which she was flaunting her fortune have since gone viral on social media.

US$15 000 Windfall For Mutare Sex Worker

Zimbabwean sex workers are concerned by the rise in the prices of condoms saying this could result in a spike in new HIV infections and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
A pack of Durex Condoms now range between ZW$107 and ZW$119 while free condoms are hard to come by.
A sex worker, Shamy, who is a Chemical Engineering Student with the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) told Health Times that the viability of their trade was now at risk. She said:
<blockquote>The new condom price has just taken us by surprise. I am stranded and I don’t know how I am going to continue with my job as a sex worker after this.
I am a sex worker, that’s my other profession, I must always have a condom in my bag since any time, anywhere, clients might want my services.
With the new price of condoms, it is going to be difficult to survive, where are we going to get the money from?
In our trade, clients don’t bring their own condoms, we have to buy to ensure we protect ourselves because they fear being caught by their wives with condoms in their pockets. Mhene inotongouya iri Savana Dry nemari yayo kasi isina condom.
I can’t risk just because I am on PrEP, I need that condom to prevent other STIs infections. Increasing the price of condoms does not work. This anomaly needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

Sex Workers Bemoan Spike In Condom Prices

Commercial sex workers have been granted permission to exhibit at this year’s edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF). In the past, they were denied permission. Speaking to Southern Eye, Sexual Rights Centre legal support officer Sipho Khumalo said,
<blockquote>It is so great to be here showcasing our work. It has been a struggle, but we are glad that we have finally got the chance to express ourselves for society and the society to know that sex work is work like any other. We are happy that we got the chance to show the world that we are not parasites, we are working to earn a living for our families.
…People know little about our profession, so here we teach them that we practise safe sex and we must not be seen as people who are spreading HIV as society views us.</blockquote>

Commercial Sex Workers Granted Permission To Exhibit At ZITF

According to research done by the Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children (ZNCWC) girls as young as 12 are engaging in sex work. In some cases, the girls do not get paid in cash but get things such as empty bottles, food, clothes and blankets.
Presenting the results of the study, titled, “Young Women in Commercial Sexual Exploitation along Two Transport Corridors in Zimbabwe: Causes, Initiation, Prevalence and Use of HIV and Social Services” Maxim Murungweni, a senior official with ZNCWC said:
<blockquote>Can you imagine that some of the girls we interviewed during the study told us that they were given some empty beer or soft drink bottles as payment, which they would then sell for less than $0.50 cents each. said.
Although the majority of them reported being paid cash for providing their services some told us that they were paid in kind with the other items of payment other than bottles being, used blankets, clothes and even food.</blockquote>
