The Southern Africa Regional Climate Outlook Forum predicts that Southern Africa will experience at least 13 cyclones this season, higher than the average of nine per season.
The Government of Zimbabwe has allocated ZWL$37 billion for disaster response and management, as the country is expected to be hit by two tropical cyclones during the rainy season. The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) estimates that around 250,000 people are at risk of being affected by adverse weather conditions, including cyclones, floods, landslides, and hailstorms.
Harsh weather conditions have already caused severe damage, affecting 5,000 people, killing 13 people and injuring 16 this year. In the previous year, Southern Africa experienced 11 cyclones, including one that caused significant destruction and displaced over 100,000 people in Mozambique, Malawi, and Madagascar. Responding to questions from <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/two-cyclones-forecast-250-000-at-risk-experts">The Sunday Mail</a>, the DCP said:

Due to increased cyclonic events, the country is likely to experience at least two tropical cyclones that will make landfall during the 2023-2024 rainfall season.
The impact of extreme weather conditions is estimated to directly and indirectly affect at least 250 000 people and their livelihoods, mainly in landslide- and flood-prone areas.
So far, at least 5 000 people have been affected, while 13 deaths and 16 injuries caused by extreme weather conditions have been reported.
</blockquote>
Areas prone to flooding, such as Mbire, Tsholotsho, Muzarabani, Chipinge-Middle Sabi, Chimanimani, and Gokwe North, are put on high alert before the start of the rainy season. However, it is important to note that flash flooding can occur anywhere in the country depending on the intensity of rainfall and the condition of drainage systems. The risk of landslides is particularly high in the Eastern Highlands.
The government has developed a contingency plan to respond quickly to rain-induced disasters, including activating civil protection structures and providing resources to districts. The Meteorological Services Department will continue to monitor the season and provide timely forecasts and alerts to the Department of Civil Protection.

At Least 13 Cyclones Are Expected To Hit Southern Africa During 2023-2024 Rainy Season

Tropical Cyclone Freddy is now in Mozambique amid concerns that it may regain its intensity over the Mozambique channel before making landfall in Madagascar for a second time.
The cyclone, which had considerably weakened to a low-pressure zone by the time it reached Zimbabwe last week, made a U-turn and tracked back into Mozambique.
According to the Department of Civil Protection (DCP) deputy director in charge of response and operations, Farai Hokonya, the weather system killed 2 people and blew off several roofs in Chimanimani and Chipinge.
According to Zoom Earth, as of 2.40 PM on 1 March 2023, Freddy was still in Mozambique but inching closer to the coast, moving eastwards towards Madagascar, with sustained wind speeds of 30km/hr.
Cyclone Freddy affected Mauritius, Réunion and Madagascar, before making landfall in Mozambique on 24 February and later crossing the border into Zimbabwe.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy is one of five in known history to set a record for track length in the southern Indian Ocean, as it formed further east than the previous cyclones, reported <a href="https://www.eumetsat.int/record-breaking-tropical-cyclone-freddy-crosses-indian-ocean">EUMETSAT</a>.
The cyclone developed in the Timor Sea and was reported by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) on 5 February.
During a westward journey, Tropical Cyclone Freddy underwent a few intensity changes, and at its strongest, had sustained winds of 270km/hr.

Cyclone Freddy Returns To Mozambique

The South African government has urged communities to heed the warning from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and the disaster management teams across the country.
In a statement issued this Saturday, 25 February, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said that Vhembe and Mopane districts in Limpopo Province may experience heavy rainfall, floods and wind damage due to the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Freddy. Said Dlamini-Zuma:

We urge all people living in low-lying or flood-prone to be careful and monitor the rising water levels and evacuate to safer areas or higher ground.
</blockquote>
She then shared some important tips for communities to observe during the anticipated heavy rains and strong winds. These are:
<ul>
<li>If you are on foot, be aware that low-moving water can also be dangerous during flood conditions.</li>
<li>Do not drive on flooded roads or cross flooded bridges.</li>
<li>Avoid crossing low-lying bridges, streams and rivers.</li>
<li>Be especially vigilant at night. It is harder to recognise potentially deadly road hazards.</li>
<li>Never try to walk, swim or drive in swift-flowing wate. Even if the water is 15 cm deep, it can sweep you off your feet.</li>
<li>Where possible, communities are encouraged to try to avoid contact with any flood waters. The water may be contaminated with raw sewage, oil or other dangerous substances, and may also be charged with electricity from fallen powerlines.</li>
<li>Motorist must be careful and avoid driving through flooded areas.</li>
<li>Teach your children about the dangers of floods.</li>
<li>Monitor weather alerts on radio and television.</li>
<li>Keep your important documents in water-resistant containers.</li>
<li>Do not camp or park your car along rivers or washes, especially during heavy rains or thunderstorms.</li>
<li>Keep your cell phone near you and have emergency numbers at hand.</li>
<li>Contact the municipal disaster management centres or the nearest police station or call the national emergency numbers (112, 10177 or 107) when faced with threats.</li>

South Africa Braces For Remnants Of Tropical Cyclone Freddy

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) says Tropical Cyclone Freddy has slightly delayed landfall by 12 hours.
On Thursday afternoon, MSD announced that the intense weather system would make landfall in Mozambique at 3 AM on Friday.
However, in an update issued at 8 AM on Friday, the Met Department said the cyclone has delayed landfall by 12 hours and has been downgraded to Severe Tropical Storm Freddy. It said:

The former Tropical Cyclone Freddy is currently in the Severe Tropical Storm stage with wind speed of rotation of approximately 110km/hr. It has slightly delayed landfall by 12 hours.
This delay will result in the further clearing of the atmosphere over Southern Africa and strengthening Freddy’s rotational winds to 120km/hr (65 knots) by the time it makes landfall over southern Mozambique (near Inhambane) later this afternoon.
In this current position, Severe Tropical Storm Freddy creates a calm before the storm.
However, in a few hours, Freddy’s spinning cloud bands (spanning more than a +500km radius) should cause strong winds, reduced to less than 40 knots (typical strong winds are usually 20 knots), increased cloudiness and localized heavy rains (above 65mm) from Saturday 25 till Tuesday 28 February 2023 in districts such as Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chiredzi, Mwenezi, Beitbridge, Chivi, Masvingo Rural, Zaka, Bikita, Gutu and Buhera.

The Met Department said these areas as some of the parts of Zimbabwe which have received the least cumulative seasonal rainfall.
The MSD said the Tropical Storm will affect the south of Manicaland, Masvingo and Matabeleland South provinces starting from Friday evening.
The public has been urged to watch out for blown-off rooftops, and fallen trees due to strong winds, very heavy localised rainfall (above 65mm) from Saturday and flash flooding in areas with saturated soils, wetlands, impervious grounds and along river banks.

Cyclone Freddy Delayed By 12 Hours

The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) says it has established evacuation centres in flood-prone areas in preparation for tropical Cyclone Freddy.
The cyclone is anticipated to cause localised heavy rains (above 65mm) and strong winds as early as Thursday evening into Friday morning.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy is one of five in known history to set a record for track length in the southern Indian Ocean, as it formed further east than the previous cyclones, reported <a href="https://www.eumetsat.int/record-breaking-tropical-cyclone-freddy-crosses-indian-ocean">EUMETSAT</a>.

During a 17-day westward journey, Tropical Cyclone Freddy underwent a few intensity changes, and at its strongest, had sustained winds of 270km/hr.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200007839/zim-braces-for-cyclone-freddy">NewsDay</a> on Wednesday, DCP deputy director Farai Hokonya, revealed that districts such as Chimanimani, Chipinge, Mwenezi, Chivi, Masvingo and Beitbridge are among those that could be potentially hit by the cyclone. Said Hokonya:

We have mobilised for regions, but particularly for Freddy, we have gone a gear up preparing to save lives.
All districts that might interface cyclones such as Chimanimani, Chipinge, Mwenezi, Beitbridge and Masvingo have evacuation centres.
When there are cyclones or floods, people might lose their food stocks. Government and its partners also set aside stocks to assist communities in these areas because they might be difficult to reach.
Our mobilisation team is continuously mobilising these resources and sending them to the district where the potential hazard would occur.
</blockquote>
He said support has also been given in the form of fuel to the police sub-aqua unit and the Air Force of Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Braces For "Record Breaking" Cyclone Freddy

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) says the country is safe for now from tropical storms Dingani and Freddy which are currently thousands of kilometres away from the continent.
The two tropical storms are evolving and intensifying about 4 600km away in the Indian Ocean.
MSD agro-meteorologist and long-range forecaster Benjamin Kwenda on Friday told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimbabwe-is-safe-from-tropical-storms-dingani-freddy/">The Herald</a> that the two tropical storms currently pose no direct threat to Zimbabwe. He said:
<blockquote>
Zimbabwe is still safe for now. The cyclones are still very, very far away. There is no need to mention them as yet.
We are monitoring developments in the Indian Ocean basin to see if there is anything that could possibly affect us.
Presently, there is nothing that could be a cause for concern.

Cyclone Dingani was formed on 28 January and was moving towards Mauritius and Reunion, some islands on the Indian Ocean.
As of 10 February, the tropical storm, with a maximum speed of 110km/h was located 2106 km east-southeast of Diego Garcia, which is more than 4626km away from Zimbabwe.
Cyclone Dingani was travelling at a speed of 85 km/ hr and was expected to change its speed to 100 km by 11 February, according to experts.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy was formed on 03 February near the north-western coast of Australia and was heading towards African Islands, and moving at a wind speed of 95km/hr.

Tropical Storms Dingani & Freddy: Zimbabwe Is Safe For Now - Met Department

Five cyclones are expected to reach Zimbabwe in the current rainy season, the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department (MSD)</a> said.
Speaking during the National Tobacco Workshop, an agriculture meteorologist at the MSD, Benjamin Kwenda, said there are no predictions of when, where they could strike, and their strengths. <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/five-cyclones-to-hit-zim-expert/">The Herald</a> cites him as saying:

This season we are anticipating an increase in cyclone activity in January, February, March up to April but in terms of projections we are expecting five cyclones. 
The tropical cyclone is just like a whirlwind so when the whirlwind is generated you are not able to pick where exactly it will go but as it grows bigger you will then able to pick the direction and then you can actually say this is where it is going.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe is still reeling from the effects of Cyclones Idai, Gombe, Batsirai, Ana, Eloise, and Chalane which hit the southern African country in recent years.
Meanwhile, the Met Department was expecting rains into next week. There would be a rainfall decline up to Wednesday next week, with some places experiencing sunny conditions. Kwenda added:

For the period December, January and February we are expecting the bulk of the country to receive normal to above normal rainfall in this season and this is the same that we are expecting in January, February and March. We are generally looking for a better season in terms of seasonal totals.

The Met Department urged farmers to insure their crops as there are high chances of more frequent extremes, such as hailstorms.

"We Are Expecting Five Cyclones" - MSD

The death toll from Tropical Cyclone Gombe in Mozambique has risen to at least 53 from the 7 initially reported.
On Thursday, the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) said another 80 people have been injured and 400 000 affected by the cyclone.
The INGC also said Gombe had completely destroyed 45 000 homes and partially destroyed 30 000 mainly in the northern and central areas of the country.
Tropical Cyclone Gombe made landfall on the Mozambican coast last week on Friday morning, with wind speeds exceeding 200 km/hr.
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said Tropical Cyclone Gombe made landfall as an intense category-3 cyclone.
In January, Tropical Storm Ana killed at least 88 people in Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi and also caused flash floods in Zimbabwe.
Scientists have attributed repeated devastating cyclones in Southern Africa, that used to be relatively rare, to climate change
The warming of the Indian Ocean is believed to be fuelling the cyclones’ intensity.

Tropical Cyclone Gombe Kills 53 In Mozambique

Tropical Cyclone Gombe is most likely not going to hit Zimbabwe, the Meteorological Service Department has said.
The cyclone made landfall in Mozambique on Friday leaving 11 people dead in the country and at least 7 more in Malawi.
MSD forecaster, Benjamin Kwenda, said the Met Department was monitoring the cyclone but indications are that the storm will not affect Zimbabwe. Said Kwenda:

So far, from the trajectory, Cyclone Gombe, which is in Mozambique, is not coming to Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe is most likely not going to be hit by Cyclone Gombe.
We will be monitoring the situation but we would like to advise the public that Cyclone Gombe is most likely not going to hit the country.

Last month, the MSD projected that six more cyclones were likely to hit Zimbabwe during the remainder of the current rainy season.
Tropical Cyclone Gombe is the second cyclone after Tropical Cyclone Batsirai, to hit other neighbouring countries, without affecting Zimbabwe.
Tropical Storm Ana, which hit parts of Manicaland in January and caused flash floods, is the only violent low-pressure system to have affected the country this rainy season.

At least seven people died as Tropical Cyclone Gombe made landfall on the Mozambican coast on Friday morning.
The cyclone had wind speeds exceeding 200 km/hr as it swept into the country’s north and central areas.
The deaths were confirmed by Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi as he was addressing reporters during a visit to South Africa. He said:
<blockquote>
I have briefed President Ramaphosa on the Gombe tropical storm affecting Mozambique since 2 AM today.
Seven people were killed across Nampula province due to fallen houses and other infrastructure (collapsing).
</blockquote>
Nyusi said the cyclone’s initial damage was in Nampula Province in Mozambique’s northeast.
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said Tropical Cyclone Gombe made landfall as an intense category-3 cyclone. WMO said in a tweet:

Winds have weakened but the heavy rains bring a threat of flooding in Mozambique and southern Malawi for several days.

A cyclone classified under category 3, according to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, has one-minute, maximum sustained winds of between 178 km/h and 207 km/h.
Mozambique has been struggling to recover from a series of devastating storms that have killed scores of people and caused damage to infrastructure.

7 Dead As Tropical Cyclone Gombe Hits Mozambique

Tropical Storm Gombe is likely to make landfall at Nampula Province’s coastal district of Mossuril on Friday morning, Mozambican meteorological authorities warned on Thursday.
Tropical Storm Gombe is moving at a speed between 120 to 165 kilometres per hour.
Its impact is predicted to be much stronger than the tropical storm Ana that hit the region in January, according to Lelo Tayob, a meteorologist from the National Institute of Meteorology.
Speaking at a provincial session of the Emergency Operational Committee held in Nampula, Tayob said:

At this moment, the system has already turned into a tropical cyclone and is already very close to the waters off our coast, towards the province of Nampula, and according to the forecasts, everything indicates that the district of Mossuril will be the entry point.

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction on Wednesday warned that 77 bridges, 2 058 schools and 192 health unities in the central and northern region of the country could be affected by the cyclone.
<h2>Authorities’ response to imminent disaster</h2>
18 boats, food and non-food items have been positioned in strategic locations to provide immediate assistance if necessary.
Domestic flights of the national airline LAM to central, northern regions have also been cancelled.

Mozambique Braces For Approaching Tropical Storm Gombe

Tropical Cyclone Emnati made landfall on Madagascar early on Wednesday with winds of up to 135 kilometres per hour.
Cyclone Emnati becomes fifth extreme weather event this year, and the fourth tropical storm to make landfall in Madagascar in one month, following Tropical Storm Ana (22 January), Tropical Cyclone Batsirai (5 February), Tropical Storm Dumako (15 February), and an inter-tropical convergence zone which impacted Madagascar on 17 January.
Emnati struck on the southeastern side of Madagascar, where Batsirai killed scores of people just under three weeks ago.
The government’s Office for Risk and Disaster Management said late on Tuesday that over 30 000 people were evacuated ahead of Emnati’s path as a precaution.
Emnati was later on Wednesday reclassified as a tropical storm as its speed slowed to 100 km/hr and there were no early reports of casualties or damage.
The storm was expected to exit into the ocean by Wednesday evening, the meteorological department said.
Besides Emnati, Madagascar has been affected by three other tropical storms this season.
Tropical Storm Dumako struck Madagascar on 15 February and killed at least 14 and displaced more than 4 300, according to Madagascar’s disaster relief agency.
Tropical Cyclone Batsirai hit the island on 5 February, killing at least 124 people, damaging or destroying the homes of 124 000 and displacing around 30 000.
Tropical Storm Ana made landfall on Madagascar on 22 January and killed 58 people on the island and left 55 000 homeless.
Tropical Storm Cliff did not make landfall.

Tropical Cyclone Emnati Hits Madagascar

Tropical Storm Dumako was moving westwards over the Indian Ocean towards north-eastern Madagascar on Tuesday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has said.
On Tuesday, 15 February at 6.00 UTC (6 AM CAT) Dumako’s centre was located about 80 km east of Nosy Boraha Island, with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h (Tropical Storm).
Tropical Storm Dumako was forecast to make landfall over south-eastern Analanjirofo Region, close to Nosy Boraha Island on 15 February late morning (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 70-75 km/h.
After that, Dumako was predicted to cross northern Madagascar as a tropical depression on 16 February.
Heavy rain and strong winds were forecast over north-eastern Madagascar, particularly over the Analanjirofo Region, where a red warning for cyclone is in effect.
Yellow warnings for cyclone were issued across the regions of Sava, Toamasina I-II, Befandriana-Avaratra, Mandritsara, Andilamena, Amparafaravola and Ambatondrazaka.

Tropical Storm Dumako Update

Tropical Storm Dumako is projected to make landfall on the northeastern coast of Madagascar on Tuesday evening.
The cyclone is the fourth this year and is forecast to make landfall in northeastern Madagascar and the areas of Sava, Analanjirofo and Toamasina are on alert.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Tropical Storm Dumako has sustained winds of up to 100km/h. It said:

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), Dumako is currently classified as a Moderate Tropical Storm and is expected to reach eastern Madagascar on 15-16 February with winds up to 100km/h.
As per the latest modelling, Dumako could then evolve into a Severe Tropical Storm and head towards the Mozambique Channel, possibly making landfall in the country on 18 February.

The U.N. Meteorological Organisation says at least eight to 12 more cyclones may hit southern Africa and nearby islands in the Indian Ocean before the cyclone season ends in May.
Evans Mukolwe, an African meteorological expert who is a consultant for the U.N.’s intergovernmental authority on climate prediction had this to say:

In the last few years, we have noted more warming of the oceans. This change in climatic patterns in the Indian Ocean normally leads to an increase of cyclones in the southwestern part.

Tropical Storm Dumako Expected To Reach Madagascar On 15 February

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned that a tropical system is brewing in the Indian Ocean, north of Mauritius and could affect Zimbabwe in the next few days.
In a statement on Monday, MSD said Eloise is currently a tropical storm and is expected to weaken when it makes landfall over Madagascar in the next 24 hours. The statement read:
<blockquote>The tropical system named Eloise is not yet a tropical cyclone (is developing). It is currently a moderate tropical storm, to the north of Mauritius.
It is expected to make landfall over Madagascar in the next 24 hours and decrease in intensity before it re-emerges in the Mozambique <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cyclone_Chalane" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Channel</a> on Thursday evening 21 January 2021.
The trajectory (the path the system will take), as well as the intensity (strength of the system), may vary greatly during this period and thereafter.

Barely a month ago, Zimbabwe escaped a tropical cyclone after Chalane weakened to a tropical storm when it made landfall.
Meanwhile, the MSD recently <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/14/more-tropical-cyclones-storms-floods-predicted/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">warned that tropical cyclones and serious floods remain a real danger in the second half of the 2020/21 rainy season.</a>

Tropical Storm Eloise To Hit Madagascar Within 24 Hours - MSD

Zimbabwe’s disaster management teams are on high alert as a tropical cyclone has hit Mocambique. The cyclone, which has been named Dineo, is expected to bring heavy rain and  perhaps flooding in Matebeleland South, Masvingo, and Matebeleland South.
The Meteorological Department in an alert  said:
<blockquote>The Meteorological Services Department wishes to issue a high alert for tropical cyclone-type rainfall that is forecast from Thursday 16 to Monday 20 February 2017.
The areas likely to be impacted most are Masvingo and Matabeleland South provinces as well as the southern areas of Manicaland Province,” read the statement.
Tropical cyclones are preceded by very strong and damaging winds followed by extreme flooding. The MSD is closely monitoring the situation and will issue another alert as soon as the level of significance warrants it.</blockquote>
