South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma has issued a statement to mark the conclusion of his sentence saying he is relieved to be free again to walk around.” He was jailed for refusing to appear before the Zondo Commission that was investigating him over corruption he allegedly committed during his presidency. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Zuma said he felt like he was back in 1973 when he was released from Robben Island. He said:

Today marks the end of the one-year and three months (15 months) term to which I was sentenced by the Constitutional Court in an unprecedented development in July 2021.
It is a day of mixed emotions. I am relieved to be free again to walk around and do whatever I want to do without restrictions and having to seek permission, in the same manner that I felt in 1973 when I was released from Robben Island. Only this time, I am also filled with sadness. It was the first time ever that the Constitutional Court sentenced any person to a term of imprisonment and without even the benefit of a trial. I never expected this to happen during the freedom and democracy we fought so hard to attain. 
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to South Africans from all walks of life for the unwavering support and love during a most difficult and trying period. The phone calls, visits and messages of support on social media and other platforms kept me strong and focused on ensuring that those who wanted to break my spirit and resolve do not succeed. I also appreciate the prayer meetings and other gatherings that were organised during the incarceration period. These gave me and my family much encouragement and upliftment.
A number of people have gone through a lot of hardships due to speaking out about my unjust and cruel incarceration. They remain firmly in our thoughts in their fight for human dignity and justice, which are among the values and principles that we all fought for as we struggled to liberate this country.

South Africa: Former President Zuma Says "I'm Relieved To Be Free Again To Walk Around"

Samsung has remotely disabled TV sets that were stolen during last month’s <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/07/19/sa-civil-unrest-buyers-of-looted-goods-face-imprisonment/">unrest in South Africa</a> that was triggered by the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/06/29/former-south-africa-president-jacob-zuma-jailed-for-15-months/">imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma.</a>
Samsung South Africa has announced the implementation of a television block function on all its TV sets obtained through unlawful means or stolen from its warehouses, including sets looted from its Cato Ridge distribution centre in KwaZulu-Natal last month.
The company said the block function was activated as part of its commitment to reopening businesses and minimising the loss of jobs after the unrest, in line with the plea to #RebuildSouthAfrica. Samsung said in a statement:

TV Block is a remote, security solution that detects if Samsung TV units have been unduly activated, and ensures that the television sets can only be used by the rightful owners with a valid proof of purchase.
The aim is to mitigate against the creation of secondary markets linked to the sale of illegal goods, both in SA and beyond its borders.

The technology is already pre-loaded on all Samsung TV products. Mike van Lier, director of consumer electronics at Samsung SA, said:

South Africa Unrest: Samsung Blocks Looted TV Sets

Over 100 000 people are likely to lose <a href="https://vacancymail.co.za/">jobs in South Africa</a> following the unrest that was triggered by the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma on 8 July.
Zuma was imprisoned for refusing to appear before the Zondo Commission of Enquiry that was investigating him for corruption he allegedly committed while he was still president.
His supporters protested his imprisonment and the protests degenerated into chaos as some individuals looted businesses and blocked roads mainly in Kwa-Zulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces.
Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi is worried about the prospects of the affected employees and business owners. Nxesi said severe job losses would emanate from the aftermath of the unrest. Nxesi said:

As a consequence, many of those businesses were turned into casualties and failed to operate.
The biggest threat was that many workers lost their jobs and income. Some of the business outlets have started to rebuild, the majority of them will take many months to reopen. Some businesses fear the recurrence of the violence experienced, and the lack of resources to finance the destroyed businesses.
The effect will be very dire for ordinary workers, who may be laid off temporarily or permanently as a result. As government, we have negotiated some relief as part of UIF benefits aimed at remunerating financial hardships for the workers affected or destroyed and looted businesses.
</blockquote>
Nxesi visited some of the affected businesses in Soweto, Ekurhuleni and Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal and promised to expand his visit to Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Mamelodi and Sebokeng.
He said a total of 76 shopping malls and centres in Gauteng were severely affected. He added:

There are some estimates where some are saying that anything between 75 000 and 105 000 people have lost their jobs. What happens to those workers?

Nxesi said the unrest also has had a negative impact on many consumers who relied on the malls which were looted as they now have nowhere to buy their goods. South Africa Unrest: Over 100 000 People Likely To Lose Jobs

The former president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has been allowed to briefly leave prison to attend his brother’s funeral in Nkandla.
The funeral of Michael Zuma is set for this Thursday.
Zuma, 79, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for refusing to appear before the Zondo Commission of Enquiry that is investigating him for corruption he allegedly committed during his 9-year-tenure as president.
He handed himself to the police on July 8 and has been at the Estcourt prison since then sparking widespread violent protests and looting in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.
At least 276 people are said to have died in the unrest. The department of correctional services said in a statement Thursday:
<blockquote>As a short-term, low-risk classified inmate, Zuma’s application for compassionate leave was processed and approved.</blockquote>
It added that inmates were not required to wear “offender uniform” outside correctional facilities.
Local media say Zuma’s brother died aged 77 after a long illness.
Inmates in South Africa are usually allowed to attend relatives’ funerals, a right denied to the country’s first black president Nelson Mandela when he was in jail for fighting the apartheid regime.
Zuma’s long-running corruption trial is expected to resume on August 10, despite his request to have the case postponed due to the pandemic and recent unrest.
After nine years in office, the charismatic ex-leader was ousted by the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party in 2018 over a mounting series of graft scandals.
He faces 16 charges of fraud, graft and racketeering, and has entered a not guilty plea.
He retains a fervent support base both within the ANC and among the general public.

Zuma Leaves Prison For Brother's Funeral

Former South African President Jacob Zuma applied for compassionate leave from prison to attend his brother Michael Zuma’s funeral which will be held in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday.
Department of Correctional Services spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo told Bloomberg by phone Wednesday that Zuma submitted the application on Tuesday and authorities were considering it. He didn’t say when a decision would be made.
The application is made amid growing calls from different quarters for the State to be compassionate and allow the former president to attend the family funeral.
<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/07/08/15-month-jail-term-ex-sa-president-zuma-in-police-custody/">Zuma has been in prison since the 8th of July</a> for refusing to testify before the Zondo Commission that is investigating state capture during the former ANC boss’ 9-year tenure as president.
The South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights said Zuma had the right to attend his brother’s funeral.
The organisation’s president, Golden Miles Bhudu, said the former president should be treated like any other South African and be granted the right to bury his loved ones.
Bhudu criticised statements claiming that Zuma making a public appearance could worsen the unrest in the country. Bhudu said:
<blockquote>He is doing a lousy sentence. He must apply to go to the funeral; they should not deny him to go and bury his brother. I don’t think there will be a problem with him going there. If there are problems, he is the former president and he can call out those who want to make trouble.
We as an organisation have an interest in his incarceration, the conditions, the medical treatment and study material. The former president is not an ordinary man.</blockquote>
The South African Council of Churches (SACC) said it would be appropriate for Zuma to attend his brother’s funeral. The secretary-general of the SACC, Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana, said there were also discussions to provide the Zuma family with pastoral support and counselling.

Zuma Has Applied For Leave From Prison To Attend Brother's Funeral

Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni has said six alleged instigators behind last week’s violent unrest in South Africa have been arrested.
The unrest was triggered by the arrest and incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma over refusal to testify before the Zondo Commission of Enquiry that is investigating state capture.
Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, Ntshavheni said:
<blockquote>This is the latest update which we just got in now, three already appeared in court but were remanded in custody for bail hearings. Charges against them include incitement to commit public violence and the arrests that we are referring to are not related to the arrests in regards to the looting.</blockquote>
She added that the police were working with community members to ensure those responsible for looting were nabbed.
Her remarks come after Police Minister Bheki Cele announced last week that they were following 12 people who instigated the violence.
President Cyril Ramaphosa insinuated that the violent protests that were mainly in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces were a calculated move to revolt against his government.
His remarks were echoed by Minister Ntshavheni who said last week’s violence was planned, orchestrated and instigated to undermine the authority of the state.
Ntshavheni said warning reports about the riots which were received were acted upon on time. She added:
<blockquote>Lessons that have to be learnt have been learnt and the gaps have been picked up and corrective measures have been taken to avoid a lapse in the situation.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Ntshavheni said the situation in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng has stabilised, with no new incidents of looting reported lately.

South Africa Unrest: 6 Alleged Instigators Arrested

South African security agents have reportedly confiscated Zimbabwean-bound goods worth thousands of rand as smugglers attempted to move the loot following days of rioting in the neighbouring country.
There has been looting of businesses in South Africa since July 8, 2021, following the arrest and imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma for contempt of court.
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently described the violent protests and looting as a well-orchestrated campaign to start a revolt against South Africa’s constitutional order.
Authorities have moved in to recover looted goods with the military assisting the South African Police Service. The South African Police Service in a tweet on Monday said some of the loot was intercepted at Groblersbrug, a border crossing between South Africa and Botswana on the Limpopo River. Said the police:
<blockquote>Search and seizure operations are yielding positive results at Beitbridge and Groblersbrug ports of entry as the looted goods are being recovered. Reject and report stolen goods.

The situation in the country is gradually returning to normal in most parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
Members of the South African Police Service remain dedicated to ensure the safety and security of everyone in South Africa.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they were yet to record cases of stolen goods from South Africa being imported into Zimbabwe.
The unrest has left some Zimbabwean retailers lamenting as many were yet to receive goods paid for from the neighbouring country because of the riots and looting.
The Zimbabwean economy largely depends on imports from South Africa.

SA Unrest: Zimbabwean-Bound Looted Goods Intercepted

The founder and CEO of Ubuntu Wealth Management Qhawe Sithole who is also a former Hilton College pupil has been arrested after being found with looted goods.
Sithole was caught with a looted washing machine, bicycle, bar stool and braai accessories in his Wrangler. 
His arrest comes amid allegations that the common and poor man was behind the looting happening in South Africa.

Sithole, who lives in the wealthy coastal town of Umhlanga, has now been suspended by the Ubuntu Wealth Group Board.
The Financial Sector Conduct Authority says it has removed him from its database as he is no longer deemed fit and proper to operate in the financial services industry.
Analysts say Sithole’s case shows the extent of the erosion of the moral fibre of the South African society at large.
He is currently out on bail.

Founder & CEO Ubuntu Wealth Management Found With Looted Goods

Police are investigating a potential arson attack after two buses were set on fire in Cape Town on Thursday morning as protests continue over the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma.
According to Metro Police Spokesperson, Ruth Solomons, police received a complaint that buses were burning at the Blackheath Golden Arrow Bus Depot on Thursday.
She’s also confirmed that there were no signs of protesters or suspicious activity in the area when they arrived.
However, it’s still unclear how the buses were set alight.
Demonstrators have in some areas of the country, especially in the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces, been blocking roads, torching trucks, and looting businesses.
Thousands have so far been arrested over the violent protests that have also seen over 70 people dying.

South Africa Unrest: Two Buses Set On Fire

South African media has come under fire from various quarters for allegedly ignoring the murder of blacks by Indians.
This comes amid reports that at least 15 blacks have been killed by vengeful Indians who accuse them of burning their trucks and or looting their businesses.
Some of the killed were reportedly innocent.
Police Minister Bheki Cele confirms that 15 people have died in the Phoenix township area in Durban, during the ongoing violent clashes. Cele visited the area on Wednesday evening and made an appeal to the local residents to maintain order.
Video footage of the carnage has spread across social media, fuelling rage that could potentially motivate racially charged clashes in other parts of the country.
Some, however, blame the developments on President Cyril Ramaphosa saying inaction by the government forced citizens to be vigilantes as they sought to protect their properties.

SA Media Under Fire For "Ignoring Murder Of Blacks By Indians"

The unrest that erupted in South Africa last week has triggered a fuel crisis in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province, motorists have said.
They claim that it is becoming increasingly difficult for people in KZN to get fuel as protests over the arrest and incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma continue.
Local media reports suggest that winding queues are forming all over the province as motorists try to fill up.
Meanwhile, the Department of Energy has announced that the sale and dispensing of petrol and diesel into portable containers is prohibited.
It is believed the prohibition is a way to avoid the use of fuel in the ongoing protests that have left dozens of people dead.
Countless buildings have suffered extensive damage as a result of torching while some vehicles were burnt to ashes.

The protests degenerated into chaos as demonstrators looted shops, burnt trucks and blocked roads.
At least 72 people have since died in the chaos with over 1,000 people arrested.

Zuma Arrest: More Soldiers Deployed To Quell Chaos

A group of truck owners patrolled the streets in South Africa tracking people who allegedly burnt their trucks and they have shot and killed some of the accused.
This comes as protestors who are demanding the release of former president Jacob Zuma are reportedly burning cars, blocking roads and looting businesses in Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng provinces.

Over 72 people have been killed in the violent protests that erupted in South Africa following the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/07/14/zuma-arrest-african-union-speaks-on-violent-protests/">arrest and imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma last week.</a>
The number includes 10 people who were killed in a stampede during looting on Monday night at a shopping centre in Soweto.
The BBC filmed a baby being thrown from a building in Durban that was on fire after ground-floor shops were looted.
The military has now been deployed to quench the unrest that began last Thursday as the police appear to be overwhelmed.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has called it some of the worst violence witnessed in South Africa since the 1990s, before the end of apartheid.
Angry protestors blocked roads, looted businesses and warehouses in major cities and small towns in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces.
Bloomberg news agency quoted the chief executive of Business Leadership South Africa, Busisiwe Mavuso, as saying more than 200 shopping malls had been looted by Monday afternoon.
The BBC’s Vumani Mkhize says several shopping centres in Soweto have been completely overhauled, with ATMs broken into, restaurants, stores selling alcohol and clothing shops all left in tatters.
Ministers have warned that if looting continues, there is a risk some areas could run out of basic food supplies soon but have ruled out declaring a state of emergency.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala said some 26 people had been killed in the province so far while the death toll in Gauteng is 19, including the 10 who died at the shopping centre in Soweto.
Zikhalala reports that almost 1 300 have been arrested, but law enforcement remains heavily outnumbered.
