The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of nine men from Matobo, Ntunjambili area for beating a suspected habitual thief to death.
ZRP spokesperson in Matabeleland South Province, Inspector Loveness Mangena, on Monday identified the now-deceased as Nkosana Ndlovu (28) who was on the police wanted list. Said Insp Mangena:

Ndlovu was on a wanted list by police over cases that involved unlawful entry, thefts and assaults.
On January 3, 2023, he was assaulted by villagers who had had enough of his shenanigans The matter was reported to Matobo police and he was referred to United Bulawayo Hospital where he died.
Police have arrested nine villagers in connection with the murder case.

Before he succumbed to his injuries, Ndlovu indicated that he was beaten by Clemence Mpofu (31) and eight others, and mentioned the mob.

Nine Matobo Villagers Beat "Habitual Thief" To Death

A one-year-six-month-old child from Silobini Village died at the gate of Mhlahlandlela Clinic in Matobo, Matabeleland South Province where her parents had waited for about 11 hours begging a security guard and a nurse on duty to assist them.
They, however, failed to get any assistance after the guard and the nurse refused them treatment and admission saying they did not attend to anyone on weekends.
The incident happened two weeks ago.
The child’s father Misheck Maphosa believes his child wouldn’t have died if she had received medical care promptly. He said:

There is absolutely nothing dignified about watching your child die. No parent should ever have to go through what we have been through.
It was on a Saturday morning and at around 8 am when my wife took our child who had respiratory problems to Mhlahlandlela Clinic for medical attention.
When she got there the security guard then informed her that the clinic does not open on weekends.
My wife then indicated that the banner stated that they attended to emergency cases around the clock but the guard declined and argued that they did not attend to anyone on weekends.

Maphosa’s wife returned home for lunch around 1 PM and later, Maphosa accompanied his wife back to the clinic to find out why the child had not been attended to. He said:
<blockquote>
When we got there after lunch, we found the nurse on duty at the clinic but she did not attend to us.
She also refused us entry into the clinic. We tried begging her together with the security guard but they refused to allow us inside.
At around 7 PM, I sought the help of a police officer who then talked to the nurse and the clinic was opened at 8 pm. The child died immediately after entering the clinic.

He said his daughter died at the gate exactly at 8.05 PM.
Silobini Village head Mannford Ndiweni confirmed the incident saying the community is not happy with the nurse in question and community members have since submitted their complaints to her superiors. Said Ndiweni:

What happened is true and it’s pretty disturbing. We have received a lot of complaints about the nurse from community members and the loss of this child shows that this nurse is not performing her duties of saving the lives of people properly.
We have since set out our findings in detail, along with the recommendations we have made in order to ensure that the lessons of this tragic case which we forwarded to the relevant authorities should never happen again at the clinic.
We are currently waiting for their response because this case needs to be decisively dealt with.

Child Dies At Clinic Gate After 11-hour Wait

The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) says it is not surprised by the loss in the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zec-releases-results-of-22-october-2022-by-elections/">by-elections held over the weekend</a> adding that <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/matobo-violence-mugwadi-says-its-clear-ccc-members-were-chasing-zanu-pf-vehicles/">violence</a> employed by the ruling ZANU PF party against its people contributed very much to the outcome.
CCC, led by Nelson Chamisa, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zec-releases-results-of-22-october-2022-by-elections/">won only one council seat out of the six</a> (6) that were up for grabs, namely Mutare, Matobo, Guruve, Takawira, Buhera and Insiza.
The party says the pre-October 22 by-elections violence which was recorded in Matobo and Insiza districts, where CCC members were attacked and injured by alleged ZANU PF supporters, had a negative bearing on the outcome of the elections. 
Bulawayo Proportional Representation MP Jasmine Toffa (CCC) was <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/update-on-insiza-violence-scores-injured-as-zanu-pf-storms-ccc-rally/">injured while on a campaign trail and had to be hospitalised as a result of the violence.</a>
CCC deputy spokesperson Felix Magalela Sibanda told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200002515/violence-robbed-us-ccc">NewsDay</a> that the elections were not free and fair. Sibanda said:  
<blockquote>
We are not surprised or saddened by the results of the six by-elections that happened over the weekend. Naturally, we knew that ZANU PF had that strategy to come and disturb people a week before elections. These were not free and fair elections as they had elements of intimidation through violence. They use this tactic of intimidating people so that they are afraid to go and vote.
Our membership has increased by 45%. We still have hope that come 2023 we are going to win these elections. These are just wards.

Meanwhile, electoral watchdogs have urged the government to facilitate dialogue among political parties to avoid disputes in future elections.
In a statement on the just-ended by-elections, the Zimbabwe Election Support Network urged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) to ensure a peaceful and enabling environment that satisfies credible elections. 
Zimbabwe Election Advocacy Trust director Ignatious Sadziwa said the elections failed the credibility and legitimacy test, hence they are far from being free and fair.

CCC Says It's Not Surprised By Loss In By-elections

Scores of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) members were injured when supporters of the ruling <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/just-in-ccc-says-suspected-zanu-pf-thugs-attacked-and-injured-bulawayo-mp-ccc-members/">ZANU PF stormed the opposition party’s rally in Insiza on Monday.</a>
The party announced on Monday that its Member of Parliament (MP) for Bulawayo Metropolitan, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jasmine_Toffa">Jasmine Toffa</a> and a group of CCC members were badly injured following an attack by “suspected ZANU PF thugs in Insiza.” Added the party:

The thugs stole her handbag, personal belongings, money &amp; fuel coupons &amp; smashed vehicle windscreens.
</blockquote>
It is alleged that suspected ZANU PF supporters driving in a convoy stormed a CCC party by-election campaign meeting in Insiza, beating up activists, and smashing and pouring sand into vehicle engines.
CCC spokesperson, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Fadzayi_Mahere">Fadzayi Mahere</a> also posted on Twitter reiterating the reports. She said:

We’ve received a report that the thugs are pouring sand into the vehicle engines. They have stolen Hon Toffa’s handbag, personal belongings, money &amp; fuel coupons. They’ve smashed windscreens. Hon Toffa &amp; others are badly injured.

The attack allegedly happened at party candidate Augustine Gumede’s homestead, some 40km from Filabusi, where party followers were gathered.
The campaign meeting was convened to mobilise support for Gumede ahead of a council by-election in Insiza’s Ward 4.
In a message he recorded on his mobile and circulated on WhatsApp, Gumede sent a distress call from his hideout in the bush, according to ZimLive. He is quoted as saying:

The situation at my homestead is very bad. People are injured and desperate to be taken to hospital. Toffa’s car has been damaged, Angilacala’s vehicle and mine have been damaged.
All my home windows have been smashed and all my property damaged.
I have been left with nothing and have nowhere to start.
As I speak, we are hiding in the bush, our car tyres were stabbed and deflated.

Gumede said police were called via phone but were yet to render any assistance.

Update On Insiza Violence: Scores Injured As ZANU PF Storms CCC Rally

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a statement on the violence that erupted in Matobo on Sunday 16 October 2022 between members of the ruling ZANU PF and members of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). The statement seen by Pindula News says both parties have each approached the police to report the violence. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is seized with reports of violent skirmishes which occurred in Matobo on 16th October 2022. Reports of assault and violence have been received from both ZANU-PF and Citizen Coalition for Change members.
Investigations are now in progress with a view of accounting for all suspects involved in violence.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges political parties and supporters to be responsible and shun all forms of violence.

Meanwhile, CCC national spokesperson, Fadzai Mahere claimed two party legislators, Daniel Molokele and Kucaca Phulu, were violently attacked in Matobo by ZANU PF members while campaigning ahead of Ward 2 by-elections.
Speaking at a media briefing in Harare on Monday, Mahere said the party led by Nelson Chamisa, a former Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, was worried by the rise in cases of politically-motivated violence ahead of the harmonised elections scheduled for 2023.
She said the violence reflects ZANU PF’s way of doing things adding that Chamisa cannot go to any rural area without an incident of ZANU PF-driven violence and lawlessness.
Mahere, a lawyer, said they had recorded similar incidents in Masvingo, Ngundu, Chivi, Wedza, Chiredzi, Zaka, Seke rural, Nyamaropa, Chipinge, Hurungwe, Karoi, Gokwe Centre and recently Gokwe Kabuyuni.
She, however, is convinced that the violence would not “stop the winds of change.”

Police Speak On Matobo Inter-party Violence Between ZANU PF And CCC

CCC is confident of victory in the upcoming Matobo Ward 2 by-election after it snatched two council seats from ZANU PF in Bulilima last week.
The seat fell vacant following the death of ZANU PF councillor Tom Moyo.
The election will be held on 22 October, with CCC’s Sindiso Ngwenya up against Liberty Nyirongo of ZAPU and Frederick Siwela of ZANU PF.
In by-elections held in Bulilima on 3 September, CCC won two out of three seats in wards 1 and 16 which were previously held by ZANU PF.
In an interview with CITE’s <a href="https://cite.org.zw/author/senzeni/">Senzeni Ncube</a>, CCC candidate Nonhlanhla Mlotshwa said the same methods used in Bulilima will be employed as they approach the by-election. She said:

The same method that we used in Bulilima is the same method that we will continue to use, we will use those methods we won’t change anything.
[However], we saw some people being bused to polling stations, especially in ward 14 which was very sad and we saw that in Malalume, 10 per cent of the votes were assisted voters, some of those voters didn’t need assistance at all.
The euphoria is everywhere, from Bulilima coming to Matobo, everyone wants to win, and everyone wants change.
I strongly believe we are going to win, I think we are the only party out of these three parties that is fielding a woman, so it means it’s time for women and it’s time for change.

A mentally challenged man from Matobo pelted her mother with stones leading to her death over an unknown issue.
Police confirmed the incident which occurred on September 16 via their Twitter page.
In another case, a mentally challenged man fatally struck a man with a hoe on 18 September. Police said in recent updates on crime:

On 16 September a suspected mentally challenged man (24) fatally struck his mother (49) with stones, over an unknown issue.
In a related case, which occurred on 18 September a suspected mentally challenged man (43) attacked imbibers at a traditional beer drinking ceremony in Chiredzi and struck a man (53) thrice on the head with a hoe. The victim died on the spot.

The police urged members of the public to monitor and ensure that mentally challenged persons in their custody are receiving medical treatment.

Mentally Challenged Man Fatally Stones His Mother

Villagers from Domboshaba in Matobo district blocked a syndicate from gold within Matobo Hills World Heritage Site.
The miners, Mazinahue Syndicate, had a prospecting license from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development but villagers would not have it.
This attracted the attention of anti-riot police which descended on and brutalised villagers forcing them to flee into mountains.
A meeting attended by key stakeholders was held at Tshapo Village on Saturday to solve the dispute. During the meeting, villagers urged police to investigate possibilities of corruption.
Matobo District Development Coordinator (DDC) Obey Chaputsira, told villagers that no mining was going to take place in the area. He said:
<blockquote>We promise you that it’s a no to this mining. The council wrote to us and as the DA’s office we also wrote a letter to the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development. As the DA and leadership of this place we say no to this project.</blockquote>
The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) representative, Curator of Archaeology, Charity Nyathi, emphasised the importance of Matobo as a natural world heritage site.
Nyati also observed that Domboshaba village was a protected landscape within Matobo up to Umzingwane.
The incident comes when the government is underfire for awarding <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/09/09/zimparks-granted-chinese-firm-mining-concession-within-hwange-national-park/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">a mining licence to a Chinese company, Yuxian County ZhongXin Coking Company Limited, to drill and explore for coal within the Hwange National Park.</a>

Villagers Stop Mining At Matobo Hills World Heritage Site

A gold mine tunnel collapsed on Monday in Matobo, Matabeleland South, and trapped 18 miners.
The government, through the Ministry of Information, has confirmed that 5 bodies have been retrieved from the mine while an unknown number suspected to be still trapped underground. The statement reads:
<blockquote>Following a gold rush at Nugget Mine in Mat South, the disused mine collapsed trapping at least 5 people inside.
5 Bodies and a helmet suspected to belong to a 6th individual have been retrieved. Investigations are underway. Govt condoles with the families of the deceased.</blockquote>
Nugget Mine is situated on National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority land 35km south of Bulawayo. It has been at the centre of ownership disputes since 2012.

5 Bodies Pulled Out Of Nugget Gold Mine

Nugget Mine Civil Protection Department Chairperson, Ms. Sithandiwe Ncube has confirmed that four gold miners have died after the mine collapsed on Monday morning.
It is feared that the death toll might rise to six after the mine in Matabeleland South Province collapsed. Reports also indicate that 12 other miners are still trapped underground the mine situated about 30km from Bulawayo.
The chairperson has indicated that mining experts are assessing the risks before a rescue team is dispatched underground. She also revealed that resources are also being mobilised in order to rescue the trapped miners and retrieve the bodies spotted at the site of the mine accident.
