The MDC youth wing says it is targetting to win 66% of the votes in the upcoming 2023 general elections.
Newly-elected youth chairperson, Albert Chidhakwa, told journalists on Sunday in Harare that they will encourage the youths to register to vote. Said Chidhakwa:

We are preparing for next year’s polls. We do not have time to waste, we will mobilise young people in all provinces.
We will be doing mass mobilisations to make sure everyone joins our party and is registered to vote.
As the youths, we are campaigning for our president who is none other than Douglas Togarasei Mwonzora and we are targeting 66% of the votes.

Last month, party leader Douglas Mwonzora was controversially nominated as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.
Another Mwonzora supporter, told NewZimbabwe.com, that unlike the MDC’s main rival, CCC, the party was able to successfully hold an ordinary congress. He said:

No one was stopped from contesting Mwonzora. Every position was open to everybody regardless of age or gender. Dhagi ndochibaba hapana zvatingaite ndozviripo. 
After the death or incapacitation of the President, we go for an early ordinary congress.
Now, this is a full congress which is done after every five years, unlike CCC. They do not have a congress, constitution, or structures, so it is different from CCC and ZANU PF.
I know this because I am a Zimbabwean politician, I follow politics and eat politics every day.

"MDC Youths Targetting 66% Of Votes In 2023"

The MDC has endorsed its president Douglas Mwonzora as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.
The opposition party held its 5th Ordinary Congress at the City Sports Centre in Harare on Sunday, 18 December where a resolution by the party to nominate Mwonzora as the sole presidential candidate was confirmed.
Speaking at the congress, Mwonzora said MDC remains strong despite what he called false propaganda which was meant to destroy. He said:

As we begin 2023, we will begin a candidate selection programme, we are no longer like other parties where leaders just appoint candidates, ours will be chosen by the people through voting.
We are going to do an aggressive mobilisation for the party. All the top leaders you see are first going to their villages where they come from and mobilise from there.
I do not want to see a leader at the Harvest House, I want to see the leader on the ground, iwe neni tine basa.
I know, we know, they know that the MDC is a surprising party, and it will achieve. For over two years, we were subjected to a lot of false propaganda meant to split and destroy our party and leadership.
Today the MDC is standing on two feet, no amount of propaganda or hate language, or falsehoods can defeat an idea whose hour has come.

MDC Holds 5th Ordinary Congress

With only two before the MDC-T holds its 5th Ordinary Congress, the party’s deputy president Elias Mudzuri insists that he will not contest for any position. The party’s ordinary congress is set for 18 December 2022.
Mudzuri was reportedly planning to challenge party president Douglas Mwonzora before the latter was in November unanimously nominated as the sole presidential candidate at the party’s 5th Ordinary Congress. <a href="https://twitter.com/EngMudzuri/status/1603421396956508161">In a Twitter post</a> on Thursday, 15 December, Mudzuri said:

Let me reiterate what I stated earlier. I will not stand for any position at the 18 December MDC Congress.
I will only participate in a process where the branches, wards, districts, and provinces are involved by exercising their constitutional right to choose their leaders.
</blockquote>
Earlier this month, Mudzuri said that he will not be contesting for any post at the congress citing irregularities in the party’s electoral processes.
Speaking to <a href="https://tellzim.com/mudzuri-slams-mwonzora/">TellZim News</a>, Mudzuri said he will not leave the party but will remain a card-carrying and loyal member of the party. He said:
<blockquote>
I am ashamed of what is happening right now but I cannot run away from the party, I have talked to them and I will continue to talk to them but if they don’t listen, I will remain a card-carrying member as I cannot be part of the leadership which fails to observe the democratic tenets of the party.
I can be nominated for any position in the party and have at some point assumed the leadership of the party as you know when Mr (Morgan) Tsvangirai died, he left me in charge of the party.

I Won't Stand For Any Position At Congress - Mudzuri

The MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora says it will hold its 5th Ordinary Congress on 18 December 2022 in Harare.
Mwonzora notified party members about the development, saying this is in line with the MDC-T constitution. He said:

In line with the constitution of the Party, and following the relevant internal processes, notice is hereby given that the 5th Ordinary Congress of the Movement for Democratic Change (Tsvangirai) will be held on the 18th of December 2022 in Harare.

Mwonzora was recently nominated by the MDC-T National Council as the sole presidential candidate for the party’s 5th Ordinary Congress.
On 21 November 2022, party spokesperson Witness Dube said Mwonzora is now the party’s duly elected presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.
At the same National Council meeting, Chief Ndlovu was also nominated 1st Vice President unopposed.

MDC-T Announces Date For Its 5th Ordinary Congress

Former MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s close ally, Norest Marara, has become the first person to openly challenge Douglas Mwonzora for the party presidency ahead of the congress.
Marara reportedly facilitated the purchase of two of Tsvangirai’s vehicles in 2011 and was arrested on charges of smuggling them through Beitbridge Border Post.
He is currently the party’s secretary for special projects and party business in the national executive as well as head of finance and administration.
However, the MDC-T standing committee is reportedly expected to reject Marara’s candidature at its meeting on Wednesday.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200003173/norest-headache-for-mwonzora">NewsDay</a> reported sources in Mwonzora’s camp as saying that there will be an attempt to block Marara’s candidature in the standing committee. Said the sources:

The party failed to suspend Marara, but it is now looking forward to barring him from contesting for the presidency. Our president, Mwonzora fears defeat by the popular Marara. Marara is popular with the structures.
</blockquote>
In a statement, the party’s Harare provincial spokesperson Collen Chavengwa said Marara did not qualify to contest for the MDC presidency on the grounds that he “has never served in any capacity in any of the 24 districts in Harare”.
Marara told NewsDay on Sunday that he had served the party for more than five years. He added:
<blockquote>
I am also the founding member of the party and, therefore, I meet the constitutionally-required criteria. I have served the party for more than five years.

Marara contested the Harare Central constituency as the MDC Alliance candidate in the 26 March by-elections but lost to CCC’s Murisi Zvizwai.

Norest Marara Set To Challenge Mwonzora For MDC-T Presidency

The MDC-T says it is conducting a restructuring exercise in preparation for an ordinary congress that will be held before the end of the year.
Key positions including that of the party president, currently occupied by Douglas Mwonzora, vice president, and organising secretary, among others will be contested.
MDC-T national spokesperson, Witness Dube, said that the date for the ordinary congress depends on the completion of provincial structures and the availability of funds for the national congress. He added:
<blockquote>
The structures have to be adopted by the national council, automatically giving the president the mandate to call for a national election after 30 days.
We are about 70 per cent complete and we don’t declare a date until everything is complete, that is structures are tabled and adopted by the national council.
The structures become the voting college and are subject to the national council for adjudication, if there are no issues, the structures are passed as a record and kept in custody.
MDC-T holds its ordinary congress after five years and when our ordinary congress was due, the Supreme Court (ruling of May 2020) took us back to the 2014 structures that were used to hold the extraordinary congress issue but our constitution is very specific…

MDC-T Prepares For Ordinary Congress

The opposition MDC-T has asked the nation to pray for their former leader Thokozani Khupe who has been hospitalised following a coronavirus positive test.
In a post on Twitter, the MDC-T said that Khupe was in a stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. The update read:

Khupe was one of the delegates at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on Sunday where about a thousand people gathered to elect a new leader for the court-sanctioned MDC-T congress.
She announced <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/just-in-thokozani-khupe-tests-positive-for-covid-19/">she tested positive for COVID-19 2 days after the congress</a> on 29 December.
Khupe at one point was diagnosed with cancer and she beat the disease and even went on to establish her own cancer foundation, The Thokozani Khupe Cancer Foundation to help those suffering from cancer.

Thokozani Khupe Hospitalised

Former Thokozani Khupe’s ally, Obert Gutu has said the chances of Khupe overturning the outcome of the MDC T Congress are slim and she will have to approach the court to recourse, The Herald reports.
This came after Khupe hosted a standing committee and resolved to fire Douglas Mwonzora who won the elections and beat Khupe to become the party’s president on Sunday.
Commenting on the issue Obert Gutu said:
<blockquote>In terms of the MDC constitution, the moment you enter into a contest you are no longer the holder of your position. The election has to be by secret vote conducted by an independent electoral board appointed by the party to prepare and run the election, it is the duty of the electoral board to ensure that they have a legitimate voters’ roll that is agreed on by all candidates.
It is also critical to ensure that all delegates are given an opportunity to cast their ballots. It is also the duty of the electoral board to ensure that the election is credible, that there is no rigging and it is free and fair. Contestants rank equally, you enter the election at the same level, you cannot during the congress purport to suspend the other candidates, such a scenario would bastardise the whole process, it would be an absurdity</blockquote>
On Sunday <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/12/28/i-made-the-right-decision-obert-gutu-mocks-the-mdc-t-congress/">Gutu made fun of the chaotic congress</a> and said he made the right decision and left the MDC T led by Khupe. Khupe still maintains Mwonzora was fired.

Only The Court Can Overturn The Outcome Of The MDC T Congress - Obert Gutu

Zimbabweans on Twitter have reacted to the chaotic MDC T court-sanctioned congress that took place yesterday. After the congress, Douglas Mwonzora won the party presidency against Khupe who polled less than 120 votes. However, before counting was completed allegations of election rigging and violence marred the congress. Khupe also suspended Mwonzora before the elections were completed as she alleges that he threw the party into disarray.

Twimbos React To The MDC T Congress Chaos

Firebrand politician Nelson Chamisa and his allies are not welcome at the court-sanctioned MDC T Congress, according to MDC T 2014 structures secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora, New Zimbabwe reports.
Mwonzora was speaking to New Zimbabwe TV about MDC T Congress when he said:
<blockquote>Why does it take seven months for people to realise that they are wrong. From day one Senator Morgen Komichi and I spoke at the Supreme Court that we must honour this judgment, they refused.
They went further to say they are no longer members of the MDC-T.  They renounced their membership and in terms of Clause 5.10.a, of our constitution they automatically terminated their membership.
If you terminate your membership of the MDC-T and you want to come back there are ways to do that. You make your application and your application is processed, considered by the national council and the decision is communicated to you by the secretary-general.
Here are people who left the party, formed their outfit and their project is crumbling, everything that they are doing they are doing it wrong. Right now, the legal position is that everybody who was recalled is no longer a member of MDC-T. Everybody who is a member of the Standing Committee of another political party cannot be a member of our political party.
If you are a member of the national executive of another political party, you cannot be a member of our political party. If you are a member of the national council of another political party, you cannot be a member of our party.
If you are a member of the congress of another political party, you cannot be a member of our congress, because it stands to reason, because you have your own political party, you have your own political project, you cannot be allowed to have a say on who your opponent is going to be.
In this case, we are going to be electing a president. That person is likely to be our presidential candidate versus their candidate. How can they come to determine who their opponent is?</blockquote>
