LIST: Foreign Media Organisations Accredited To Cover Zimbabwe's 23 August Elections

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services deputy minister Kindness Paradza, who is Makonde MP, said that the government will ensure that journalists operate in a free and safe environment.
Paradza made the remarks while speaking at the Zimbabwe Community News Awards ceremony in Harare on Friday. He said:

Zimbabwe under the Second Republic has made the safety of journalists an issue of high priority.
We do not condone any acts of violence against journalists.
Government under the able leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa is committed to providing a safe operating media environment and ensuring that media practitioners exercise their duties freely without any harassment from anyone or any court.
Government has achieved major milestones in enabling an environment for the media and this includes repealing some laws and crafting new pieces of legislation.

You’re aware that we repealed the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act and replaced it with the Freedom of Information Act.

Govt Prioritising Safety Of Journalists - Paradza

ZANU PF has refused to accredit journalists from privately-owned local publications among them NewsDay, The NewsHawks, and NewZimbabwe accusing them of bias.
Party spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa on Wednesday said the ZANU PF Politburo resolved to bar NewsDay from covering the event. He said:

For your own information, we have not refused anyone registration except for one particular publication which we feel prefers to write fiction rather than to follow events at the party, if we invite them they will also write fiction.
So, this is where we are. Even the Voice of America will be there and even foreign correspondents.
We have no problem with critical journalism but we don’t tolerate invented stories when we have Press conferences. We also need to be criticised but not on fictitious stories.

ZANU PF information director Tafadzwa Mugwadi said the matter was discussed in the Politburo because it is a serious one. Said Mugwadi:

Local Private Media Barred From ZANU PF Congress

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> has urged members of the public and the media to report officers involved in criminal activities and acts of misconduct.
The call was made by Officer Commanding <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nkulumane" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Nkulumane</a> District Chief Superintendent Marshall Dube last week while officiating at the opening of Nketa 9 police base and handover ceremony of bicycles to the police. He said:
<blockquote>They are your children who need our guidance and wisdom. In the event of grievances on the conduct of police officers, do not hesitate to contact the Officer in Charge.
May I request the media who are the eyes and ears of the nation to extend their telescopic eyes and alert ears to the activities of the ZRP.
We also rely on your reports in knowing issues that may be of concern to the public. Let us all unite in fighting crime to create a crime-free society.</blockquote>

Media Urged To Report Rogue Cops

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has announced the appointment of Wisdom Hombarume a new CEO. Hombarume replaces Patrick Mavhura who had been CEO since 2014. It is not clear what caused Mavhura’s ouster
Before his appointment, Hombarume was the Director of Digital Media and Broadcasting Technology.

ZBC Appoints New CEO

We’ve just rolled out a new design of Pindula News. It is the first part of a few major changes we’ll be making in the coming weeks.
We’re pretty excited about it because we think it is a significant improvement to the site and that you’re going to love it.
<h3>What has changed?</h3>
<h4>Faster and lighter</h4>
This is the biggest change and we hope you can feel it already.  We have drastically reduced the size of the pages on the site. This way, the site loads much faster, and even more importantly, it uses less mobile data.
This also means that even on networks that are not very fast (Edge, 3G) you can still view the content on our site.
We have done this by doing some things inhouse and trimming down the fat as much as we can.
We will continue optimising the site so that it’s even faster.
If you run your own news site and are interested to use some of the tools we have created, you can get in touch with us and we’ll share them. We’re keen to share them because there should be more websites that are fast out there, and consumers of news content should enjoy using the internet.
 
<h4>Mobile Only</h4>
Pindula News is now made for mobile phones. This is because more than 75% of our visitors are on mobile phones.
This does not mean that people on laptops/desktops are not able to view the site. They are, they are just really getting the same version of the site that mobile visitors see. In the past, we had about 3 versions of the site. Again, this is about making everything simpler for everyone.
 
<h3>Fewer Adverts</h3>
As internet publishers, it’s easy to do some things that are not in the interest of the reader. Whether that’s misleading headlines or pumping a website so full of adverts that the reader struggles to read the content that brought them there.
One area we were not doing so well was the issue of adverts. We have taken a decision to reduce the number of adverts significantly so that you can focus on reading the content.
You will however still see some adverts and we have tried to place them well enough that they don’t get in your way if you’re not interested in whatever is being advertised. We did that to create a good balance between adverts that are annoying and no adverts at all. Our business model currently, depends on advertising revenue.
As usual, no pop-up and pop-under adverts or redirects.
 
<h3>The Logo &amp; Colors</h3>
We’re introducing a new simpler logo. We felt the old logo wasn’t simple enough and that the colors were on the dull side. We changed from green to a blue and a logo that’s straight to the point and simpler which is what our existence is about.
Pindula makes information easier to consume. We want our readers to feel they can rely on us for the simple facts about things – historical and current.
 
<h3>Onward</h3>
Our guiding principle in the way we do things is to do stuff that we would, ourselves, love. It makes it easier to focus on the community and not do stuff that annoys them.

The editor of The Herald, Tichaona Zindoga, has been criticised for deliberately publishing an inaccurate story on the arrest of Bulawayo based journalist, Zenzele Ndebele.
The Herald carried a story titled “<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/activist-takes-grenades-to-state-house-nabbed/">Activist takes grenades to State House, nabbed</a>” which claimed that Zenzele was found in possession of items that looked like grenades and that they could have been chemical weapons. Zanzele ad in fact been arrested for being found in possession o used tear gas canisters. Zenzele was acquitted today by a magistrate who remarked that “It beats logic that a USED canister and an empty cartridge could be defined as DANGEROUS WEAPONS if weapons at all”
Several individuals and entities have criticised Zindoga as editor of the paper for publishing the story:

Herald Editor, Tichaona Zindoga, Criticised For Deliberate Inaccuracies

The activist journalist who was freed today by a Bulawayo magistrate has said that he will be suing government-controlled daily (The Herald) over its story that falsely claimed he had Grenades at a state event.
The journalist, Zenzele, said in a tweet this evening:

The prominent constitutional law expert, Alex Magaisa offered his help in crafting a “robust demand”.
The Herald story in question had the title “<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/activist-takes-grenades-to-state-house-nabbed/">Activist takes grenades to State House, nabbed</a>” and inside contained the following excerpt:
<blockquote>An activist was yesterday arrested at the Bulawayo State House where President Mnangagwa was meeting Matabeleland civil society leaders after he was found in possession of items that looked like grenades.
Police arrested one Zenzele Ndebele for conduct likely to breach the maintenance of public peace, in an incident with a chilling reminder that President Mnangagwa was bombed at White City Stadium last year.
Details were sketchy last night, with authorities ascertaining the nature of the objects, but preliminary indications were that they could have been chemical weapon cannisters such as teargas, likely to be thrown in an offensive posture.</blockquote>

Zenzele was arrested earlier in the week and charged with possession of an offensive weapon after he was found with 2 used tear gas canisters. Freed Journalist To Sue The Herald Over Grenade Fake News

The Minister for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Monica Mutsvangwa said that she plans to deal decisively with the harassment of female journalists and interns which is rife at media houses.
Mutsvangwa said this while speaking to The Herald on International Women’s Day. She said:
<blockquote>One of the first issues I attended to when I assumed office as Minister of Information was to meet with media organisations and the media houses to tackle various challenges affecting journalists, and abuse of female journalists and interns is one issue I have spoken about at length at each of these engagements.
I also plan to take it a step further and meet with deans at universities and colleges in order to hammer the point home that abuse will not be tolerated not just in the workplace, but even in the learning institutions.</blockquote>

Govt To Clear Out Sexual Predators From Newsrooms - Mutsvangwa

Outspoken MDC politician Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga has complained that the media ignored female presidential candidates ahead of the July 30 harmonised elections. Misihairabwi who was the elections agent for Thokozani Khupe said the media made it seem like there were two candidates only by focusing on President Emmerson Mnangagwa and MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa. Speaking to the Daily News, Misihairabwi-Mushonga said,
<blockquote>Historically, we had four female presidential candidates in this year’s elections. The media was the biggest problem. They made it appear like there were only two. The other two were simply overshadowed.  At least the public media ignored the female candidates; the private media insulted them.</blockquote>
Misihairabwi-Mushonga also complained about the<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/09/06/its-unreasonable-to-expect-mnangagwa-to-appoint-50-50-cabinet-misihairabwi-mushonga/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"> low numbers of female legislators who were voted for saying that it  Zimbabwe was still very far from achieving gender parity.</a>
