The Mberengwa-Zvishavane Miners Association has urged the Government to introduce mining as a subject in primary and secondary schools.
Speaking during the 2023 Great Dyke Career Fair held at Gresham Primary School in Zvishavane recently, the miners’ association chairperson Themba Sibanda, said:
<blockquote>
l have been challenged by the school which has introduced hunting as a subject, why can’t mining be introduced as a subject so that those in trenches get the necessary knowledge at an early stage?
</blockquote>
Sibanda argued that many youths are venturing into gold mining and there is a need for learners to be exposed to the mining industry as a career option.
He also said that teaching mining as a subject in schools will help in curbing mine deaths and encourage environment-friendly mining methods.
The Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Professor Amon Murwira was the guest of honour at the event.
Errymaple group of schools recently introduced hunting as a subject, reported The Mirror.
Zimbabwe is endowed with vast mineral resources that include platinum group metals (PGM), chrome, gold, coal, diamonds, and lithium.

Miners Urge Govt To Introduce Mining As A Subject In Schools

Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed that a miner was last week crushed to death by a hammer mill at Phirip Mine in Mazowe.
Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe said that Luke Mugiya (19) was operating a hammer mill when he was approached by Steven Tubuso and his brother with their gold ore.
Steven reportedly entered the mill to separate the ore from the dump and allegedly instructed Mugiya to press a separating button.
Mugiya, unfortunately, pressed the wrong button and crushed him in the process.
Police warned miners to employ qualified operators to avoid such accidents.

Miner Crushed By Hammer Mill

The Mining Business Confidence Index had plunged to 2.2% in 2019, down from 8% in 2018 and 21.9% in 2017. This has been mainly due to power cuts, forex shortages and policy uncertainties Sunday Mail reports.
However, according to UZ’s Prof Makochekamwa, who presented the findings of the survey, the survey forecasted that mining executives were confident about 2020. Said the Professor:
<blockquote>Survey findings show that mining executives are slightly more confident about investment plans for 2020, with 60 percent of the respondents indicating that they are planning to inject fresh capital into their businesses in 2020.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe is currently going through an economic crisis that has seen<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/28/zimbabwes-annual-inflation-rate-soar-to-almost-300-in-august-imf/"> inflation soaring to 300% by the end of August</a>. The mining sector in a normal functional system contributes 65% of all export receipts.

Mining Industry Confidence Plunges To A 2 Year Low As The Economic Meltdown Bites

Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando said there are some owned claims which have not been exploited since the the early seventies, and that such claims are a primary target.
Said Chitando:
<blockquote>Government is coming up with regulations to enforce the “use it or lose it” principle. The background to this is that we do have entities which held vast pieces of mining concessions, which are not being utilised.
In one particular province we have an entity, which has been holding a rich mining concession since the 1970s and all they do is, every year, pay renewal fees for that concession and with the economic development thrust we have for Vision 2030, surely this can’t continue. . . .
it is only fair for the country that such concessions be made available to those who have use for them.
We have advised the Chamber of Mines of Government’s intention, we have asked them to come up with their own views on how the issue should be tackled and as Government, we will also be fine-tuning our course of action</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Government To Repossess Idle Mining Claims

Minister of Mines and Mining Development Winston Chitando has said that the country is on course to earn at US$3.5 billion from mining in 2018. This will be an increase of almost US$1 billion from the US$2.6 billion earned in 2017. Speaking to the Sunday Mail, Chitando said,
<blockquote>For 2018, we are expecting to earn around US$3,5 billion, which is an increase in earnings by about $1 billion from last year. Everything so far indicates that we will reach this year’s target.
Gold has been impressive. We have reviewed upwards our target for gold output this year to 35 tonnes from the 30 tonnes that we had initially set. The idea is to hit 100 tonnes per annum by 2023 from 26 tonnes recorded last year. This will be underpinned by growth from both small-scale mining production and medium-to-large-scale mining production.</blockquote>

Zim To Earn US$3.5 Billion From Mining This Year:  Minister Chitando

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has been able to clear payments to foreign suppliers since farmers started selling their tobacco. This has eased the situation for the mining industry, which imports a lot of its supplies.  Since February, the tobacco auction floors have generated over $200 million dollars.
An executive who spoke to the Financial Gazette said:
<blockquote>There has been a marked improvement since the tobacco selling season started. This tobacco marketing season is usually good for the country,</blockquote>
However, problems are expected to return at the end of the tobacco marketing season.
