A female police officer was arrested on Thursday last week for allegedly working in cahoots with burglars who broke into a Nedbank Bulawayo branch where more than US$270 000 and R2 million were stolen.
The <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/police-officer-in-nedbank-robbery-nabbed/">Chronicle</a> reported sources close to investigations as saying that Detective Constable Sinikiwe Ndlovu (38) of CID Stores in Bulawayo assisted the thieves in committing the crime.
It is alleged that Ndlovu received a Honda Fit vehicle for assisting the nine-member gang and was in constant communication with them before, during and after the burglary.
Investigators suspect that Ndlovu may have guided the gang on how to successfully carry out the burglary.
Bank employees discovered the break-in when they reported for duty on 28 August 2023.
ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Monday confirmed Detective Constable Ndlovu’s arrest. He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that Detective Constable Sinikiwe Ndlovu has been arrested on allegations of defeating and obstructing the course of justice.
This is in connection with the unlawful entry into premises and theft case at Nedbank Zimbabwe in Bulawayo and the arrest of two suspects Lovemore Gambiza (45) and Elias Mudenda (46).
The police are still pursuing the other suspects who are on the run. Members of the public with information should contact the National Complaints desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.

Gambiza and Mudenda were arrested days after the robbery and they implicated seven others who are on the run.
The seven suspects are Agrippa Mloyi of Nkulumane suburb in Bulawayo, Dingilizwe Mloyi, Nqobile Mloyi, Sipho Tshuma, Bhekani Mlilo, and two others known only as Samamo and George.
Agrippa Mloyi and Bhekani Mlilo are reported specialists in breaking safes and skipped bail in 2018.
Upon her arrest, Detective Constable Ndlovu allegedly confessed that she received a silver-coloured Honda Fit vehicle, registration number AEY4681 from Agrippa Mloyi the night before the burglary.
However, she later claimed she had bought the vehicle for US$4 700 from Mloyi who she said was a childhood friend.
It is further alleged that Detective Constable Ndlovu could not produce an agreement of sale or the vehicle’s registration book.

Female Police Officer Linked To Nedbank Heist Arrested

The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has borrowed $600 million from Nedbank for the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2 (ERRP2).
The Government gave a guarantee that the money will be repaid by the end of May.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zinara-borrows-600m-for-errp/">The Herald</a> reported that ZINARA has a substantial daily inflow of revenue from its toll gates and vehicle licence fees, but occasionally borrows to speed up progress or to finance a major set of roadworks.
The notice of the guarantee was gazetted by Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube as 131H of 2023. Said Ncube:

The guarantee is surety to Nedbank Zimbabwe Limited that Government will honour ZINARA’s obligations under the composite bridging facility for road rehabilitation works for the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase 2 project in the event that ZINARA defaults on its contractual obligations.
The total amount covered by the guarantee is for $600 million including accrued interest.
The guarantee shall be applicable and become payable in so far as the funds were used by Zinara for the sole and authorised purpose of constructing the road rehabilitation works under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase 2 project.

ZINARA Borrows $600 Million For Roads Rehabilitation

Nedbank Zimbabwe on Friday donated some food hampers to frontline workers at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in partnership with Business Fighting COVID -19.
The bank said the donation was made in recognition of the big role the health workers continue to play in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nedbank Donates Food Hampers To Parirenyatwa Hospital Staff

The Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) has written to South Africa’s Nedbank notifying it of its intention to demonstrate at its offices.
The demonstration, according to ZIBAWU, has been necessitated by Nedbank’s local subsidiary’s reluctance to award its employees a salary increment.
A letter written by ZIBAWU president, Peter Mutasa and directed to the Nedbank chief executive officer Mike Brown, dated 23 July 2019 reads in part:
<blockquote>Nedbank is refusing to consider anything from workers as the local management says it has not been given approvals to engage workers from head office.
This is in stark contrast with another South African based bank, Standard Bank that has been exemplary and is leading the way in mitigating the suffering of workers.
It even sent head office senior management to find out how difficult it was for workers.
We have therefore resolved that we must send a group of comrades to picket for three days at your Head office, number 135 Sandown, 2196 Sandton from 5-7 August 2019.</blockquote>
Mutasa is also the president of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU).

Nedbank Workers Plan Demo At Bank's SA Head Office

NEDBANK Zimbabwe has been ordered to return close to $3 million it had unlawfully taken from its client, Mega Market (Private) Ltd.
In his ruling, Mutare High Court judge Justice Isaac Muzenda granted an application for a provisional order sought by Mega Market compelling the bank to return a total RTGS$2 898 695.71.
Muzenda ruled that there was no legal basis for Nedbank to debit Mega Market’s accounts without client’s authorisation. He said:
Respondent shall cease unlawful debits and or credits of applicant’s bank accounts pending the finalisation of this urgent chamber application.
It has been revealed that Nedbank ran a deposit promotion last year in which a client who deposited bond notes would be given a foreign currency allocation equivalent to 50 percent of bond notes deposited.
Mega Market participated in the promotion that subsisted until the monetary policy change in February. In an endeavor to apply the statute, Nedbank unilaterally debited and credited Mega Market’s bank accounts.
Nedbank then debited a huge sum of RTGS dollaars from Mega Market accounts to offset the balances due to the bank, leaving Mega Market with an overdraft of RTGS1 188 191.38.
In his ruling, Justice Muzenda noted that Nedbank had applied the statutory instrument retrospectively which is not lawful.
Nedbank argued that it was recovering a debt. This defence was however rejected on grounds above.

28 Nedbank tellers were arrested this morning and brought to the magistrate court to answer charges related to money laundering and fraud.
According to a verified source within the bank that contacted Pindula, the bank leadership is suspected to have worked with the police to effect the arrests. The source refused to be named as they are not authorised to speak to the press. The source, however, provided us the pictures below which show the bank tellers entering the magistrate’s courts in Harare for trial.
The tellers are from the Harare, Bulawayo and Mutare branches of the bank. The tellers from the different branches have been taken to the magistrate’s courts in the respective cities.

It’s not yet clear what the exact charge is.
The source also told Pindula that some senior managers were sent on forced leave recently and that this could be associated with a big scandal that the leadership is trying to put a lid on.
