The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has sparked outrage by blocking a solidarity rally for jailed opposition politician Job Wiwa Sikhala. The rally, organised by the Job Sikhala Solidarity Council, was intended to put pressure on the government to release Sikhala, who has been in prison since June 2022 on charges of incitement to public violence. The police claimed that the rally did not meet the requirements of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Maintenance_of_Peace_and_Order_Bill_(MOPA)/">Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA)</a> and therefore could not be sanctioned, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200021202/police-block-sikhala-rally">NewsDay</a> reported citing a letter from the police. Read the letter in part:

The notification to hold a procession rally in solidarity with Job Sikhala at Huruyadzo Community Hall on December 23 is prohibited. The notification does not meet the requirements of section 7 of the Mopa Act. Therefore, your event was not sanctioned.
</blockquote>
In response, the organisers of the rally accused the police of using Mopa as a pretext to stifle dissent and deny citizens their constitutional rights. They condemned the “systematic restriction of all activities done in the name of Job Sikhala by the Zimbabwean State”. They said:

The Job Sikhala Solidarity Council notes with disgust the blocking of the December 23 solidarity rally by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), it said.
The ZRP claims that the notification failed to meet the requirements of Mopa, an excuse that has been consistently used to deny citizens their freedom of association and assembly.
It is apparent that the name Job Sikhala attracts repression from the regime of Emmerson Mnangagwa. The State has caged Sikhala for more than 18 months, but they still shiver at the mere mention of Sikhala’s name.
The council will not be deterred by this setback. A series of solidarity activities are lined up to rally the millions of pro-democracy campaigners in Zimbabwe and beyond to collectively demand the release of Job Sikhala.

This incident is seen as yet another example of the government’s crackdown on opposition voices and the suppression of freedom of assembly and association. It highlights the ongoing concerns about democracy and human rights in Zimbabwe. The blocking of the rally and Sikhala’s continued detention without trial raises questions about the fairness and impartiality of the judicial system.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2022/06/14/just-in-moreblessing-ali-family-lawyer-job-sikhala-arrested/">Job Sikhala was arrested for allegedly inciting violence</a> following the gruesome murder of activist Moreblessing Ali. In May 2023, Ali, who was a member of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), the main opposition party in Zimbabwe, was brutally murdered by Pius Mukandi Jamba, and her mutilated body was found dumped in a well in Nyatsime. During Ali’s funeral wake, clashes erupted between ZANU PF and CCC supporters. Sikhala, who represented Ali’s family in seeking justice, was arrested and held in prison without trial for inciting the violence.
Meanwhile, Pius Jamba, the perpetrator of Ali’s murder, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/12/20/moreblessing-alis-killer-pius-mukandi-sentenced-to-30-years-in-jail/">was sentenced to 30 years in prison</a> by Harare High Court Judge Esther Muremba. However, Sikhala remains in prison, having spent 555 days in pre-trial detention as of December 22, 2023, for his involvement in seeking justice for Moreblessing Ali.

ZRP Blocks A Solidarity Rally For Jailed Job Sikhala

The Chitungwiza man accused of killing Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) member <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Moreblessing_Ali">Moreblessing Ali</a> in June 2022 has alleged police threatened to kill him if he did not admit to the crime, reported <a href="https://www.thestandard.co.zw/news/article/200019427/alis-suspected-killer-says-police-threatened-to-kill-him">The Standard</a>.
<a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Pius_Jamba">Pius Mukand</a><a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Pius_Jamba">i</a> alias Jamba recently appeared at the High Court in Harare. He testified in his defence that the police, who were handling his case also assaulted him.
Mukandi is accused of callously murdering Ali before chopping her body into pieces and dumping the remains in a disused well in Nyatsime.
He was tracked down to Hurungwe where he was arrested while allegedly selling his grinding mill to get money to flee to Mozambique.
Mukandi told High Court Judge Justice Esther Muremba that he was not in hiding, but had visited his relatives in Hurungwe.
He made the claims in his defence after he was asked by his lawyer Garikayi Mhishi if he was admitting to the murder charge. Said Mukandi:

After staying for two weeks in my rural area, l visited my sister and she told me that there were police officers who had visited looking for me.
She told me that they had visited my homestead but did not find me.
After she told me l then decided to go to the police to enquire why they were looking for me.
When l arrived at the police base they asked me how they could help and l identified myself and told them that l heard that they were looking for me and they said, “Harare police is looking for you”.
l was handcuffed and they took me to a room where l was detained.
After a while, they took me out of the room and told me that Harare police officers were coming to take me.
When the police officers arrived they disembarked from their vehicle and l was then surprised when the officers said, “You got us this murderer”.

Mukandi said the police told him that he was lucky he handed himself in otherwise if he had been found at home he would have been shot.
He further claimed that the police officers kept threatening to kill him if he did not admit to the crime.
Mukandi claimed police officers forced him to rehearse a statement where he confessed to killing Ali. He said:

They told me that l should not deny what l did because social media was awash with information on what l did and people were fighting because of that incident.
They said they were in a position to assist me if l listened to them.
They said if I failed to cooperate with them l was going to be taken and killed.
</blockquote>
He said the witnesses who testified for the state said he was wearing a yellow T-shirt on the night Ali was last seen at Chibhanguza nightclub, yet he was wearing a red T-shirt and blue jeans.
He said the T-shirts and jeans were recovered by the police and were never submitted in court as exhibits.
Mukandi told Chief Prosecutor Michael Mugabe that he was forced to admit to the crime.
Justice Muremba reserved her ruling to 16 November.

Moreblessing Ali Suspected Killer Says Police Threatened To Kill Him

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Pius_Jamba">Pius Mukandi</a>, also known as <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Pius_Jamba">Jamba,</a> a man from Chitungwiza who allegedly killed  <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Moreblessing_Ali">Moreblessing Ali</a>, a member of the Citizens Coalition for Change, last year, has been further remanded in custody pending a High Court trial.
Magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure remanded Mukandi to May 9 this year saying the prosecution is finalising documents to indict him to the High Court for trial, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010637/ali-killer-further-remanded-in-custody">NewsDay</a> reported.
Mukandi has been in remand prison for almost a year since he was caught while trying to escape from the law. Mukandi was tracked down to Hurungwe, where he was arrested while selling his grinding mill to get money to flee the offence.
It is alleged that on May 24th last year, at around 10:30 pm at Chibhanguza Night Club, Nyatsime in Beatrice, Ali was with her dog and her friend Kirina Mayironi. Mukandi told Ali that her dog was disturbing him, without any reason. Later, Ali went out of the club and Mayironi saw her on the ground with Mukandi dragging her.
Mukandi used a catapult to attack Mayironi, who then went back to the nightclub. Other people couldn’t save Ali because Mukandi threw stones at them.
According to the prosecutors, Mukandi took Ali to a hidden area and hit her with something unknown, then killed her by strangling her and cutting her body into pieces.
Mukandi took the dismembered body of Ali to a disused well located at Plot 321 Dunnotar Farm in Beatrice, which belongs to his mother, Laina Mukandi. He then disappeared from the area.
On June 11th of last year, Laina discovered the body parts after noticing a bad smell coming from the well. She reported it to the police, who found Ali’s dismembered body. A post-mortem was conducted on June 14th of last year at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, and the pathologist concluded that Ali was already dead when her body was chopped into pieces.

Moreblessing Ali Murder Case: Pius Jamba Further Remanded

Job Sikhala Junior, the son of jailed Zengeza West Member of Parliament, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Job_Sikhala">Job Sikhala</a> has described his father’s prolonged detention as “cruelty”
He made the remarks while speaking on South African broadcaster SABC News. 
Sikhala was arrested in June on charges of inciting public violence which erupted during the funeral wake of his deceased client and opposition party member, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Moreblessing_Ali">Moreblessing Ali</a>, who was killed by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Pius_Jamba">Pius Mukandi</a>, a man linked to ZANU PF.
He is now clocking six months at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chikurubi_Maximum_Security_Prison">Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison</a> and over the past months, has been denied bail over 10 times, while all his other co-accused have been granted. Job Jnr said:
<blockquote>
It is difficult for us to accept that we do not have our father, we cannot believe that he has been incarcerated by this military regime for over 190 days now. It is hard for us to accept this kind of cruelty.
It has been hard on us because Sikhala has 16 children who need to be fed, who need school fees and other expenses. We are surviving on well-wishers who have been giving us money and fuel coupons to visit him because we cannot afford.
</blockquote>
Sikhala, who is also caused of obstructing the course of justice, claims his imprisonment is politically motivated adding that the ruling party is afraid his political influence could result in its loss at next year’s elections. He spoke from Chikurubi Prison:

I have prepared myself for a long stay and am ready to stay until the cows come home. This is just an attempt to delay the inevitable, a Zanu PF loss. I am willing to be here until the end.
</blockquote>
Sikhala will most likely spend Christmas in jail.
His next court appearance is set for December 29.
