The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has reversed the retrenchment of over 70 of its workers and reinstated them.
Reports suggest that some of the affected workers were summoned to the human resources office on May 30, and handed letters of retrenchment notifying them that May 31 was their last day of work.
However, in a notice, NUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Mqhele Dlodlo advised all the staff members who were affected during the Staff Rationalisation Exercise last month to return to work and continue their duties with immediate effect. Read the notice:

NUST Reverses Staff Retrenchments

EcoCash Holdings Zimbabwe is set to retrench some of its staff members, after the automation of our key business processes that render some workers redundant.
In a statement, the company said it is working closely with affected staff, stakeholders and regulators to ensure the process is consultative, transparent and compliant. EcoCash said:

The changing economic operating environment has necessitated a strategic refocus as we look to increase the competitiveness of our business.
This follows the successful automation of our key business processes. Regrettably, the process will result in the reduction of our overall staff complement across the group.

EcoCash To Lay Off Workers

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has retrenched 20 workers citing an increase in operational costs amid fears that more people could lose their jobs.
Executives from the five workers’ unions were allegedly targeted to be part of the 20 employees who were retrenched last week.
This comes after management and workers’ unions failed to reach an agreement over the retrenchments during a recent meeting.
The NRZ workers want a salary increment of more than 200% and that half of the salaries be paid in United States dollars.
Currently, the highest paid artisan is reportedly earning below the equivalent of US$200.
NRZ acting public relations manager Martin Banda told NewsDay that allegations of victimisation were untrue, saying the laying off of the workers was in response to rising costs. Banda said:

Seeking better working conditions cannot be an excuse for victimising and retrenching people.
It is a well-known fact that our economy is not doing well and as such everyone has a right to air their grievances at appointed platforms and collective bargain takes its course.
We are retrenching at present 20 employees who are considered as excess staff and currently sitting in the general manager’s pool.
This is unfortunate in that initially we had pledged that we were not going to retrench anyone except through natural attrition but due to major changes happening on the market including a rise in operational costs of business such as fuel and foreign currency availability which has been constrained.
We, therefore, could not continue to have people on the payroll who are redundant.
</blockquote>
An unnamed senior manager also denied that the retrenched workers were being victimised. The manager was quoted as saying:

The affected employees belonged to what is called the general manager’s pool which was created for employees that have nothing to do after the restructuring exercise which we just completed. Where is the victimisation here?
These are people who have already been made redundant and as a management team, we can’t justify paying people who have been idle.
One locomotive will never be profitable if it is maintained by 300 artisans. Never.
At this rate, we were paying people who are not productive and eventually we would fail to pay those who are productive and the obvious would happen.

NRZ Retrenches Workers, Cites Rising Operational Costs

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) sources who spoke to The Herald said Acting Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga told police officers to prepare for retirement.
This comes after the<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/12/20/govt-starts-firing-civil-servants-strike-528-workers-pay-roll/"> Public Service Commission (PSC) said </a><a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/12/20/govt-starts-firing-civil-servants-strike-528-workers-pay-roll/">528 workers will be struck off Government’s pay roll by 31 December in line with the rationalisation of the civil service</a> as presented by Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa in the 2018 National Budget. Matanga is said to have reminded the police officers that retirement starts at 55 for them as outlined in the Police Act. The ZRP source told The Herald:

Police Officers Told To Prepare For Retrenchment

The  Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has revealed that 2 120 workers lost their jobs in the first six months of 2017 compared to only 1 825 during the same period last year, representing a 16% increase.
Addressing guests at the launch of the book Towards a Democratic Developmental States in Southern Africa, published by the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa and Labour and Economic Research Institute of Zimbabwe, ZCTU president Peter Mutasa told journalists that 4 610 companies had closed between 2011 and 2014, resulting in 55 443 workers losing their jobs.

2 120 workers retrenched in first half of 2017: ZCTU

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority is embarking on a restructuring exercise that will see a number of posts becoming redundant and 1 700 workers losing their jobs. ZESA employees who spoke to The Financial Gazette said that the posts of artisan assistants, drivers and lead artisans will be phased out.
National Energy Workers Union of Zimbabwe (NEWUZ) secretary general, Thomas Masvingwe, who is representing the workers on the pending job cuts, confirmed the development and said that artisan assistants had been reduced from a ratio of two to one to the current one to one per every artisan. 

However, ZESA Holdings public relations manager, Fullard Gwasira said that the company was not carrying out a restructuring exercise but said that they were conducting a redeployment exercise that will see staff being moved 
to new areas which would have been identified.

1 700 workers set to lose jobs as ZESA embarks on restructuring exercise

Between 1 700 and 2 000 workers may lose their <a href="https://vacancymail.co.za/categories/health-medical-nursing-fitness-jobs-in-south-africa/">jobs</a> as the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) restructures. Workers at the power company, are alleging that ZESA Holdings is denying that it is carrying out a restructuring exercise.
National Energy Workers Union of Zimbabwe (NEWUZ) wrote to the Energy National Employment Council saying:
<blockquote>Surprisingly, on the 3rd of April 2017, the claimant learnt through memos addressed to its members that the respondent was actually on the advanced stage of the restructuring exercise, which will result in the loss of 1 700 to 2 000 jobs. Despite the assurances made by the respondents, they have unilaterally proceeded with their unlawful exercise. Consequently a labour dispute has arisen wherein this tribunal is clothed with jurisdiction to urgently resolve the matter</blockquote>
Zesa Holdings have maintained that it will not be laying off people with ZESA Holdings public relations manager, Fullard Gwasira saying:
<blockquote>The ZESA group is not embarking on a retrenchment exercise at the moment, and has not given any such notice as is required by the Labour Relations Act. No <a href="https://vacancymail.co.za/categories/hospitality-hotel-catering-tourism-travel-jobs-in-south-africa/">jobs</a> are being lost. The Labour Act clearly emphasises the need to consult staff before any retrenchment exercise is embarked on. As part of the process to align staff structures to the prevailing business model, the company regularly examines its manpower charts. This process identifies areas of over and under staffing. The company then subsequently aligns its staffing to the business strategy. This process may entail moving staff to new areas which would have been identified. For example, the advent of prepaid meters has negated the meter-reading function, and staff in these portfolios is being redeployed in line with the current strategy.</blockquote>

Up to 2 000 workers set to lose jobs at ZESA

The Zimbabwe Independent reports that 9 000 workers were retrenched in 2015 and 2016 as it emerged that 26 companies have retrenched workers this month.
In an interview with the publication, Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) secretary-general Japhet Moyo said a total of 8 843 workers were retrenched in 2015 and 2016. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>In 2015, 5 333 workers were retrenched and this does not include those who were affected by the July 17 Supreme Court ruling that year which allowed employers to dismiss workers on three months’ notice,” Moyo said. “In 2016, there were 3 510 workers who were retrenched which brings the total to more than 8 500 which is a huge figure if you look at the size of our economy and the level of unemployment.</blockquote>
Moyo said last year’s retrenchments were lower than in 2015 but however highlighted that the figure could be much more as several companies did not register their layoffs. The ZCTU secretary-general also revealed that between the 1st and 19th of this month, 26 companies have retrenched workers as revealed at the Retrenchment Board’s first meeting last week on Thursday.
