The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has suspended one of its members in Masvingo over suspected links to ZANU PF-linked groups.
ARTUZ Masvingo provincial spokesperson Kudakwashe Runeso was suspended for allegedly participating in activities organised by ZANU PF’s shadowy groups.
Several ZANU PF-linked groups such as Teachers4ED and the <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Forever_Associates_Zimbabwe">Forever Associate Zimbabwe</a> (FAZ) have sprouted to push for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s re-election.
A suspension letter addressed to Runesu seen by <a href="https://www.thestandard.co.zw/news/article/200013209/union-leader-booted-out-over-zanu-pf-links">The Standard</a> showed that the union leader was being removed from his post with immediate effect pending further investigations. Part of the letter reads:

Having received a report from Masvingo provincial leadership on your involvement in working with retrogressive groupings created by the state to thwart and undermine unions, a decision of you being suspended from being an ARTUZ member and from your current position as the Masvingo provincial spokesperson has been adopted.
This suspension is with immediate effect and you shall be served with dates and all relevant material to prepare for your disciplinary hearing.

ARTUZ president <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Obert_Masaraure">Obert Masaraure</a> confirmed Runesu’s suspension. He said:
<blockquote>
I am told by our secretary general (Robson Chere) that they received a recommendation to suspend the member from Masvingo province.
It is alleged that the member was engaging in conduct that is inimical to the values of the union.
Investigations are ongoing and a disciplinary hearing will be conducted.

ARTUZ was founded in 2002 and advocates for the rights and welfare of rural teachers and promotes quality education for all children in Zimbabwe.

Teachers' Union Leader Suspended Over ZANU PF Links

An opposition MP has demanded a ministerial statement from the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Evelyn Ndlovu, explaining the operations of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/TeachersforED">Teachers4ED</a> union which is reportedly affiliated with ZANU PF.
Kambuzuma legislator, Willias Madzimure (CCC), argued that teachers should be non-partisan as they deal with learners from different political backgrounds.
On a point of national interest in the National Assembly, Madzimure said the responsible minister should explain why teachers are now affiliated with political parties. Madzimure was quoted by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/parly-mp-slams-teachers4ed-outfit-demands-explanation-from-education-ministry/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> as saying:

How are teachers going to treat children of people from different political parties?
It is not clear whether it’s a government policy or if it is under an Act of Education.
A teacher can only belong to a teachers’ association and not a political party association.
We want a ministerial statement from the responsible Education ministers on why they are allowing this to happen.

Teachers for Economic Development code-named TeachersforED is a voluntary teacher organisation aimed at economically empowering the country’s educators through self-income generating projects.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education approved the formation of TeachersforED in June 2022.
However, the formation of TeachersforED was condemned by some leaders of teacher unions who felt that it would result in the politicisation of schools as it had the backing of the ZANU PF-led government.
Various “4ED” outfits campaigning for President Emmerson Mnangagwa have emerged over the past several months.
Some of the “For ED” outfits include Journalists4ED, Artists4ED, Mahwindi4ED, Pastors4ED, VaPostori4ED, ArtisanalMiners4ED among others.

MP Demands Explanation From Minister Education Over Teachers4ED Outfit

Affiliates of 4ED have come under fire from ZANU PF for allegedly targeting its members and portraying them as new recruits to the political party.
Over 60 4ED affiliates were registered by ZANU PF to drum up support for Mnangagwa. ahead of national elections scheduled for this year
ZANU PF Political Commissar, Mike Bimha, said 4ED groups must target individuals who are not yet members of the ruling party. Bimha is quoted by The Herald as saying:
<blockquote>
Your task is to lure members who are not in the structures of the party. You should not come to us and claim members who are already in our structures. Whenever you have new members, they should be integrated in the party structures.
We don’t want affiliates who fish our members from our structures and claim them to be theirs.
The party is targeting to mobilise more than 5 million members for President Mnangagwa and the party to ensure a resounding victory in the coming elections.

Recently, Bimha criticised the affiliations for demanding funding from the ruling party.
Men believED, Miners for ED, Teachers for ED, Health workers for ED, Councillors for ED and Driving Schools for ED are among the structures aligning with the ruling party.

ZANU PF Confronts 4ED Groups Over Members

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education says it recognises Teachers for Economic Development (Teachers4ED) as a trade union organisation.
The Ministry’s spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said teachers are therefore free to attend Teachers4ED meetings during working hours. He said:

As a Ministry, we recognise Teachers4ED as a union and as such members are allowed to participate in its activities as long as they undertake proper clearance procedures from their workstations.
</blockquote>
Ndoro was responding to questions raised after several teachers and school heads attended a ZANU PF orientation meeting organised for ED affiliates on Wednesday when they were supposed to be in class.
The meeting was held in Masvingo.
Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president, Takavafira Zhou, however, disagreed with Ndoro’s assertion.
Zhou said all unions have a constitution and are registered with the Ministry of Labour.
He argued that Teachers4ED cannot be a union because it does not represent the interests of teachers. Said Zhou:

Teachers for ED is not a union. Unions are registered with the Ministry of Labour and remember this so-called union does not in any way stand for teachers’ plight.

Masvingo Provincial Education Director (PED), Shylette Mhike concurred with Ndoro, adding people should not confuse the ED acronym with “Emmerson Dambudzo”.
She said ED stands for Economic Development.
The meeting that the teachers attended was an orientation event which was superintended over by Masvingo ZANU PF political commissar, Brian Munyoro.
There were 24 other ED affiliates including Health Ambassadors for ED, Pastors for ED, Cross Border Traders for ED, Mahwindi for ED at the meeting.
A teacher who declined to be named told The Mirror that teachers who are not members of Teachers4ED were being left out of workshops, training programmes and other Government programmes that have monetary benefits. Said the teacher:

There is a lot of insecurity among teachers as a result of this association. Those who are not members of Teachers4ED are being sidelined in Government programmes.
The education system has been turned into a political landscape and it is those teachers with political instincts who will survive and this is a death blow to education.

Teachers Free To Attend Teachers4ED Meetings During Working Hours - Ndoro

Teachers for Economic Development (Trs4ED), a ZANU PF-affiliated group, has urged the government to take measures to ensure that teachers who want to work in the United are protected from human traffickers.
In a statement, Trs4ED said that there should be a bilateral agreement between the Government of Zimbabwe and the UK so that Zimbabwean teachers who get teaching jobs in Britain are protected. Reads the statement:
<blockquote>
Teachers for Economic Development (Trs4ED) notes the United Kingdom’s designation of the new policy that allows qualified teachers from nine (9) countries including Zimbabwe to apply to the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK. 
This will allow UK schools to recruit Zimbabwean teachers. Trs4ED notes the interest generated by this development in the teaching fraternity which was awash on social media.
Regarding this new development, Trs4ED is of the view that the government needs to intervene so that those teachers willing to take up the offer are protected from the jaws of human traffickers, incidents of irregular migration and being ripped off by the so-called visa sponsors. 
In that regard, Trs4ED is set to engage with the Government of Zimbabwe particularly the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MOPSE) and Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare to ensure that a system is developed that protects our teachers from the vagaries of chancers who end up initiating suspects into homosexuality, drug trafficking, human smuggling, human organs trafficking among other transnational crimes.
Noting that Zimbabwe is a friend to all and enemy to none, Trs4ED advocates for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or some form of a bilateral agreement between the Government of Zimbabwe and the UK so that our teachers are protected, respected and the profession remain dignified. 
Our view is to push for a similar agreement between Rwanda and Zimbabwe that saw teachers working in Rwanda. 
Lastly, Trs4ED can be represented in the diaspora where economic development projects are implemented back in our motherland.

Trs4ED Urges Govt To Protect Teachers From Exploitation In Britain

President Emmerson Mnangagwa warned that ZANU PF will punish teachers who refuse to support the ruling party.
Addressing over 5 000 teachers at the launch of the Teachers for Economic Development (Teachers4ED) at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on Wednesday, 19 October 2022, Mnangagwa urged ZANU PF officials who were present at the event to punish “errant” teachers. He said:
<blockquote>
Our party and government are ready to support you. We have the ZANU PF chairperson here (Oppah Muchinguri). You (Muchunguri) heard me telling them that the ZANU PF party supports them (teachers).
Your children here (the teachers) have chosen to stand with us.  Nurture and guide them. For those who would have shown errant behaviour, you should pinch them, don’t beat them too much. Anenge aita musikanzwa munoshunya hamunyanyi kurova.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa has condemned the alleged partisan abuse of teachers by ZANU PF.
In a statement, CCC said the ZANU PF-led government should improve teachers’ conditions of service instead of forcing them to attend its political rallies. CCC said:

We condemn the partisan abuse of teachers by ZANU PF. Teachers like any citizen have the freedom to make political choices.
Frog marching them to ZANU PF rallies won’t improve their working conditions or the broken education sector.

Mnangagwa Says "Errant" Teachers Risk Being Beaten

More than 5 000 teachers met in Harare on Tuesday at the Harare International Conference Centre, to launch a new union called Teachers for Economic Development (Teachers4ED).
The teachers, who were clad in regalia blended with ZANU PF colours, abandoned their workstations to attend the launch which was graced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Evelyn Ndlovu and other senior ZANU PF members such as Patrick Chinamasa and Oppah Muchinguri.
Addressing the teachers during the launch, Mnangagwa urged the educators to continue supporting ZANU PF. He said:
<blockquote>
Reject those who may seek to derail your cause, founding revolutionary aspirations and the Pan-African values of your budding organisation.
As the teaching fraternity, never allow yourselves to be used as tools by our country’s detractors in their divisive and subversive activities. Always remain patriotic and loyal to our country.
Informed by this relationship, our ZANU PF Party must remain closely connected with the education sector and the teaching fraternity immersed in the Party.
We must never again allow any challenges or differences we may face as a people, to separate these two institutions.

The teachers, some of whom went through ZANU PF’s Herbert Chitepo school of ideology openly expressed their support for Mnangagwa’s re-election bid in 2023.
Chiwenga also spoke at the event and denied reports that there was factionalism in ZANU PF. He said:

When you go back home, please tell those misguided souls that we have only one candidate and that’s our guest of honour (Mnangagwa).
