Two tobacco farmers in Mashonaland Central Province were targetted by armed robbers recently and lost thousands of cash in United States dollars.
Mash Central provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/tobacco-farmers-targeted-by-armed-robbers/">The Herald</a> that a family in the tobacco farming business from Batsirai village under Chief Nyamaropa was robbed recently.
Sgt Major Chikasha said Green Bhaira (36), Bridget Nyakupfuka (34) and their 15-year-old daughter were sleeping when Timothy Chikomba (34) of the same village and nine others approached their homestead at around 9 PM.
Chikomba allegedly called for Bhaira saying he was wanted for bailing tobacco belonging to Julias Chikuni.
Bhaira refused to open the door and the robbers forcibly broke down the door. 
Police said Bhaira tried to fight back but was assaulted with an iron bar all over his body.
He escaped and went to his neighbour Lamech Chemusora (40) seeking assistance.
The robbers also assaulted Nyakupfuka with an unknown object on the forehead demanding cash. She gave them US$3 200 and the accused left.
When Bhaira returned with Chemusora the robbers were gone. The matter was reported at Madziwa police base and Chikomba was arrested.
Bhaira and his wife sustained swollen foreheads and were taken to Shamva Hospital where they were treated and discharged.
In another incident that occurred in Mt Darwin, Sgt Major Chikasha said armed robbers pounced on Patricia Kadirire (43) of Kushinga village C under Chief Kandeya.
Kadirire was sleeping with her two children aged 10 and 3 when she was woken up by loud banging at the door at around 1 AM.
Police said the accused, Luckmore Kimbili Murombedzi (32), of Hukama village under Chief Chihota in Chikomba and two others forcibly entered the house.
Kadirire and the children were sprayed with an unknown substance causing them temporary blindness.
The robbers demanded US$4 000 which they said Kadirire received from tobacco sales but she offered them US$735.
While the robbers were busy loading groceries from Kadirire’s tuckshop, the shopkeeper Petros Moffat untied himself and ran to inform Paul Kamukombe who mobilised villagers.
The robbers who were on foot went to the Harare-Mukumbura highway with the loot and were looking for transport.
The villagers managed to apprehend Murombedzi but the other suspects disappeared into the darkness.

Armed Robbers Target Tobacco Farmers

Some tobacco farmers have bemoaned incessant rains experienced across the country in February and early March saying they brought a bacteria attack known as Angular.
Although the 2022-2023 farming season had good rainfall favourable for crops, the incessant rains received in the past few weeks harmed the golden leaf in some areas.
Some small-scale farmers in Centenary, Mashonaland Central Province were yet to harvest when rains fell leaving them counting their losses as their tobacco has been affected by the bacteria. One of the farmers spoke to <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/03/18/tobacco-farmers-counting-losses-due-to-bacteria-attacks/">ZBC News</a>:
<blockquote>
This bacteria attack is now putting us under pressure to harvest and with the rate these leaves are drying up we have lost hope of harvesting all in time.
</blockquote>
Mr Jabulani Mhundwa, an agronomist, urged farmers to observe planting and harvesting dates to avoid losses. He said:
<blockquote>
This rotting of leaves is a disaster to tobacco farming and as it is poor crop management and weather conditions are among the main contributing factors, many small-scale farmers have fallen victim to this disease. It is very important that farmers plant and harvest on time so that such losses are avoided.
</blockquote>
Mr Joe Mkandla, a crop chemicals specialist, said Angula is a disease in tobacco farming that has no cure. Angular is a bacterial disease that is associated with the drying of leaf cells at the maturity stage. 
The attack by Angula in tobacco crops affects the quality and weight of the leaf as well as puts pressure on the farmer to harvest the crop before maturity.

Farmers Lament As Incessant Rains Bring Tobacco Bacteria Attack

Tobacco farmers want full payment of their foreign currency earnings in United States dollars, instead of the current 75 per cent which they say is insufficient to cover inputs.
Tobacco farmers are getting 75% of their earnings in foreign currency and the remaining 25% in Zimbabwe dollars.
Speaking to <a href="https://businesstimes.co.zw/tobacco-growers-demand-100-forex-retention/">Business Times</a>, a representative of all farmers’ unions in Zimbabwe, Bright Bvukumbwe, said:
<blockquote>
The 75% US$ retention level is insufficient to cover the required input components. Therefore, we require 100% retention.
The increasing costs of production are not matched by floor prices plus a margin as 2022/23 recorded high costs of production at an average of 35% – broken down into a 25% average increase in inputs and +10% increases in local costs.
</blockquote>
Some of the challenges affecting tobacco growers include low foreign currency retention levels, high taxes, selling charges, and levies, according to Bvukumbwe.
According to Research International, it costs US$2.60 for a small-scale farmer to grow a kilogramme of tobacco and the average selling price is US$2.65/kg. Added Bvukumbwe:
<blockquote>
Our conclusion is that growers are producing tobacco because there are no alternate crops.
Growers are continually seeking alternatives to complement their tobacco production as growing tobacco alone is not profitable.
</blockquote>
Bvukumbwe appealed to the government to avail concessionary funding for tobacco growers to restore their viability. He said:
<blockquote>
Golden leaf production needs local independent, concessionary funding outside of contractors and financial institutions.
Borrowing at +100% interest rates for ZWL loans and +12% for US$ loans is not viable for growers.
Various announced facilities like a US$60m, and US$10m facilities have not come to fruition resulting in new foreign currency generation on the decline each season due to extensive offshore borrowings to fund production.
</blockquote>

Tobacco Farmers Demand 100% Forex Retention

Tobacco farmers have expressed their unhappiness over low prices at which the government is buying their produce. The golden leaf is sold at approximately $4.50 per kilogram.
One farmer, name unknown, revealed that the price is not commensurate with the labor and all other expenses incurred by farmers.
He also indicated that their needs including school fees payments would not be met since they get almost nothing from their produce.
The lower prices at which tobacco is bought leaves farmers with no other choice but to turn to tobacco merchants including the Tobacco Industry Marketing Board.
It was reported earlier that some merchants abuse the unsuspecting farmers.
Last season, merchants were forced to pay farmers thousands of dollars in an out of court settlement after they had allegedly forced farmers to sell their golden leaf to them.
