Catholic Diocese of Chinhoyi cleric, Bishop Raymond Mpandasekwa, has criticised the government over several issues including its “terrible proposition to turn our civilian doctors into soldiers” saying the state will be left without doctors.
The clergyman has in previous years clashed with the government over his hard stance against alleged misrule which he said was characterised by violence, injustice, corruption, and bloodshed.
In an audio recording of his recent Sunday sermon posted on Facebook, Mpandasekwa laments the wanton killing of members of the opposition and attempts to <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/10/10/zim-army-recruiting-doctors-pharmacists-radiographers/">militarise the medical profession.</a> Mpandasekwa said:
<blockquote>
They bring bloodshed, they kill, instead of freedom they bring imprisonment to those who oppose them, those who think differently, to those who disagree with their policies.
The only thing they know is violence. These people bring bloodshed, that lacking in integrity, they are dishonest.
All they bring is nothing but distress … what greater distress was brought upon us when the plight of our doctors was, a few days ago, responded to by a terrible proposition to turn our civilian doctors into soldiers, who will from then on go by instruction.”
Indeed, the freedom party refuses to give freedom of choice by refusing to listen to the cries of the distressed doctors.
Instead, they propose more distress. We are now heading to become a State with no doctors as this unconstitutional proposition is a destruction of the medical practice as we know it.
Through our policies, our situation will not only get worse, the poor are always the victims.
When bishops question the capacity and emotional stability of the government, we are accused of insulting the Office of the President.
The governed are being insulted everyday by the same people, through their careless utterances and disregard for the Constitution.
Living for justice is dangerous, for we live in a country that refuses to deliver justice. Our children are not going to school, except a few lucky ones.
</blockquote>
He added that the sick were not being treated in hospitals due to the government’s bad policies. 
Mpandasekwa added that the ruling ZANU PF instils fear in the public through state institutions such as the police, the army and the judiciary.

Catholic Bishop Criticises Govt's "Terrible Proposition To Turn Civilian Doctors Into Soldiers"

Harare – Local doctors have warned against complacency saying the fight against the coronavirus was not yet over. These remarks were made as some considered a decline in the number of coronavirus cases recorded in Zimbabwe earlier this week to be a signal that things were normalising.
The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights Doctors (ZADHR) secretary Norman Matara, however, warned of the possibility of a second wave of the virus. He added:
<blockquote>We need to remain extra vigilant and cautious, continue enhancing our disease surveillance and make sure the public continues to practise social distancing and good hygiene practices.
With cases of COVID-19 continuing to increase in neighbouring South Africa, and we have people returning home from that country, we should always remain on high alert. It is definitely not time to relax.</blockquote>
His remarks were echoed by the director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during his media briefing on Monday.
He said the virus still had a lot of room to move therefore the “hard reality is: this is not even close to being over.”
The Ministry of Health and Child Care reported on Wednesday that the country had 605 cases with the majority of cases being returnees from other countries including South Africa.

Senior Doctors have demanded the reinstatement of Junior doctors who were fired by the government following their labour action of not reporting for duty for over 60 days.
Speaking to the Health Times, Zimbabwe Senior Hospital Doctors Association said:
<blockquote>For the way forward the punitive disciplinary hearings must stop forthwith and those dismissed must have this decision reversed. A livable wage must be dispatched. Robust dialogue in good faith should take place with key stakeholders to help direct the capacitation and of the workers and the public health institutions. These must be given timelines to yield results.</blockquote>

The acting president of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA), Peter Magombeyi is expected to undergo psychological and neurological tests in South Africa.
Magombeyi was reportedly <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/26/dr-peter-magombeyi-airlifted-to-south-africa/">airlifted to South Africa in the late hours of Thursday</a> (yesterday) having left the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/The_Avenues_Clinic" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Avenues Clinic.</a>
Magombeyi’s health condition remains unknown following his abduction by alleged state agents on the 14th of this month.
He was <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/19/just-in-dr-magombeyi-has-been-found/">found “disoriented” on the 19th in Nyabira, about 35 kilometres outside Harare</a> where his alleged abductors dumped him.
Magombeyi told reporters upon his return that he remembers being <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/20/i-was-taken-to-a-basement-and-electrocuted-dr-magombeyi/">electrocuted by his kidnappers.</a>
Dr Fortune Nyamande, the spokesperson of the ZADHR, told VOA Studio7 that a team of specialist doctors is set to examine Dr Magombeyi. Nyamande said:
<blockquote>The doctor during his ordeal is suspected to have been tortured and is deeply traumatized. So, his doctors have identified that he needs a psychological evaluation and he also needs to be seen by specialist doctors, neurologists and other related specialists who would be able to make sure that his mental state is worked on so that he will be able to return to full health as soon as possible.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Republic Police have refuted claims that the acting president of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Peter Magombeyi was <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/23/dr-magombeyi-now-in-a-wheelchair-after-being-electrocuted-claims-sas-sunday-times/">“electrocuted”, “wheelchair-bound” and “unable to walk”. </a>
Without preempting Magombeyi’s medical report, the police said that Magombeyi could actually walk. The police statement released on Wednesday read:
<blockquote>The ZRP is aware of social media reports referring to the results of the medical examination carried out on Dr Magombeyi, some of them stating that he is wheelchair bound and others stating that he is unable to walk as a result of severe torture to sensitive parts of his anatomy.
The ZRP would like to ensure the public that whilst the results of his examination cannot be published on the grounds of the observance of the doctor/patient confidentiality and the fact that investigations are still in progress, these reports are mischievous, false and baseless. Consequently, they should be disregarded.
The ZRP is still carrying out investigations into this matter and members of the public with information that they consider relevant to this investigation are invited to approach the police with their evidence.
In the meantime, Dr Magombeyi has unfettered access to his family, friends, and a plethora of lawyers and he enjoys the full protection of the Zimbabwe Republic Police.</blockquote>

The real state in which Magombeyi remains unclear after the state on Tuesday applied for his continued detention at Avenues Hospital claiming that he was “unfit to travel”.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) have filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court seeking an order that forces the State to release the acting president of Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Peter Magombeyi.
The application comes after the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/police-block-dr-magombeyi-from-seeking-treatment-abroad/">State has blocked the release of Magombeyi</a> from Avenues Hospital to go to South Africa where his doctors want him to have medical attention.
The State also made an <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/full-text-state-lawyer-seeks-to-legalise-magombeyis-detention/">application at the High Court to legitimise the detention of the doctor</a> saying he was unfit to travel and also that the state was concerned about his security.

The state, in <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/25/full-text-state-lawyer-seeks-to-legalise-magombeyis-detention/">its application</a> to have the acting president of Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Peter Magobeyi kept at Avenues Hospital, has argued that the doctor was unfit to travel.
The application comes after Magombeyi’s doctors and family have asked the release of the doctor for further medical attention in South Africa.
The State has been blocking his release despite the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/24/high-court-orders-police-to-allow-dr-magombeyi-to-seek-treatment-abroad/">High Court giving Magombeyi the greenlight</a> to go.
Paragraph 3.2 of the State’s “correction” application, reads:
<blockquote>The Respondent’s son underwent medical examination and the government doctors indicated that he is unfit to travel.

Magombeyi disappeared in Budiriro on the 14th of September and was <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/19/just-in-dr-magombeyi-has-been-found/">found disoriented on the 19th, about 35 kilometres from Harare.</a>

State Says Dr Magombeyi Is "Unfit To Travel"

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that the medical staff must now consider going back to work as their industrial action was jeopardising lives of many innocent people.
Urging doctors and nurses to return to work, the president said:
<blockquote>The appropriate, professional response to reports of any missing persons should never take the form that endangers more lives, all of them innocent. Now is the time for our medical staff to retrieve their collective conscience and to restate their commitment oath that makes their profession sacred.</blockquote>
Mnangagwa also urged the business community to support the broader goal of economic recovery and sustainable long term macro-economic stability saying that some of their prices were unjustified particularly when salaries remained stagnant.
His remarks come after doctors have announced that they will continue with their strike even when the president of Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Peter Magombeyi was found on Thursday night.
The commonly shared belief was that doctors would return to work upon the return of Magombeyi who had gone missing since Saturday 14 September.
Magombeyi’s disappearance had resulted in chaos as medical practitioners downed tools demanding his return. ZHDA, however, announced that they will continue with the strike over salaries.

ED: "Medical Staff Must Now Retrieve Their Collective Conscience"

Zimbabwe Republic Police have said that investigations in the case of the acting president of Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Dr Peter Magombeyi are now in full swing.
Magombeyi was found on Thursday night after missing since Saturday 14 September.
The National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi dismissed allegations that Magombeyi was now in police custody as earlier suggested. He said:

Magombeyi’s disappearance sparked controversy with some alleging that he stage-managed his disappearance whilst some are saying the government kidnapped him.
The doctor is the only one who can set the record straight but has so far said that he does not remember anything that transpired whilst he was missing.
