The Government has appointed Air Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd board member Edmund Murambiwa Makona as the acting chief executive officer of the national airliner with immediate effect.
Makona takes over from Tafadzwa Zaza who has been the Air Zimbabwe acting chief executive officer for the past 16 months.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed the development in a statement that reads in part:
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and Air Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd board wish to advise members of the public and all stakeholders in the aviation sector, that the Board of Air Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd has appointed Mr. Edmund Murambiwa Makona as acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the national airline with effect from 12 April 2023.
Mr. Makona has been appointed in terms of Section 14 (4) (b) of the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act [Chapter 10:31] for the next six months, the period within which the board projects to have recruited a substantive CEO.
He has taken over from Mr. Tafadzwa Zaza who has been the acting CEO for the past 16 months and 21 days.
The board is grateful to Mr. Zaza for his service to the airline during his tenure as the Acting CEO.
The Ministry said Makona is an aviation expert who has worked in the aviation industry for more than three decades. Reads the statement:

He is a top-level aviation Executive with more than three decades of experience. Further, he is an international aviation consultant with an aeronautical engineering background, type rated licensed engineer, aviation quality, safety and security expert and a trainer for aircraft engineers and pilots ground school.
The board wishes to tap into his vast experience as a former CEO of Air Zimbabwe, who successfully relaunched the Airline in 2013.
With an aviation career spanning over 38 years, he also served as President of the African Airlines (AFRAA) and as an independent consultant for IATA on various African airline missions.
We look forward to unlocking value from his expertise as he complements the Board in devising and executing strategies and leading team efforts that will produce significant business turnaround at Air Zimbabwe during his six-month stint.

Makona has been tasked with spearheading Air Zimbabwe’s recovery process, through the implementation of the Air Zimbabwe six-year strategic turnaround plan.
Air Zimbabwe has a six-year strategic turnaround plan (STP) which includes the procurement and deployment of appropriate equipment for the current and planned route network, as well as a fleet commonality for the containment of maintenance and operational costs.

Makona Appointed New Air Zimbabwe Acting CEO

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona, has appointed former TelOne Managing Director, Chipo Mtasa, as the Chairperson of the Air Zimbabwe board.
In a statement, Mhona said Mtasa’s appointment is with effect from 06 February 2023 and that she will be deputised by Edmund Murambiwa Makona, who is said to be an aviation expert who has worked in the aviation industry for more than two decades. Said Mhona:

Dr. Mtasa is a top-level Executive with more than two decades of experience in devising and executing strategies and leading team efforts that have produced significant business turnaround in telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, tourism, hospitality management and many other sectors.
She is an accomplished Chartered Accountant who holds a Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours) degree from the University of Zimbabwe and several other postgraduate qualifications and certifications.

Chipo Mtasa Appointed Chairperson Of The Air Zimbabwe Board

Air Zimbabwe is promoting more domestic routes as it seeks to expand its operations, the airline’s spokesperson, Firstme Vitori, has said.
The airline, which currently uses a Boeing 737-200 and ERJ145 on its domestic and regional routes, is expected to take delivery of a second Embraer (ERJ145) soon.
Key to Air Zimbabwe’s six-year strategic turnaround plan (STP) is the procurement and deployment of appropriate equipment for the current and planned route network, as well as a fleet commonality for the containment of maintenance and operational costs.
Vitori said the easing of travel restrictions by the government last year resulted in a significant increase in load factors to an average of around 55%, combining the B737 with ERJ145 aircraft. Said Vitori:

The deluge of corporate, and social conferences and events in Bulawayo and Victoria Falls saw us operating a lot of commercial charter flights with both aircraft.
During the peak season, we also added frequencies to our domestic routes up to two flights a day.

She said regionally, Air Zimbabwe services Johannesburg, South Africa, with flights every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
Air Zimbabwe flights to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, are available every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Said Vitori:

Air Zimbabwe Plans To Expand Domestic Routes

Air Zimbabwe will next month receive a new 50-seater aircraft – an Embraer ERJ145 – a government official has said.
This is the second Embraer the national airline will have.
In a recent interview with State media, Transport and Infrastructural Development Permanent Secretary Theodius Chinyanga said:

The new aircraft is currently undergoing pre-delivery maintenance service and is now expected to be in the country in January 2023.
The addition of this aircraft will see to the airline’s route expansion programme, which entails increased frequencies on the current schedules.

Air Zimbabwe To Acquire New Plane Next Month - Govt Official

The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) says it is pursuing new Air Services Agreements (ASAs) to increase the number of airlines flying into the country.
CAAZ director-general <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Elijah_Chingosho">Elijah Chingosho</a> told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/business/article/200001744/caaz-seeks-new-airline-deals">NewsDay Business</a> that 60 ASAs have been signed since independence in 1980.
<blockquote>
Since attaining independence in 1980, Zimbabwe has negotiated over 60 ASAs with States in Africa, Asia Pacific region, Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere.
The authority continues to seek additional States with which to set up ASAs. Zimbabwean skies are open to airlines from all corners of the world.
This is also in line with the dictates of the Single African Air Transport Market of which Zimbabwe is among the 11 founding members, where the authority is working towards ensuring that all ASAs are Yamoussoukro Decision (YD) compliant.

Chingosho said the Yamoussoukro Decision (YD) of 1999 sought to open up African skies to eligible African operators to help facilitate better inter- and intra-connectivity within Africa and with the rest of the world.
The CAAZ boss said airport infrastructure upgrades would attract major airlines into the country.
In 2016, Zimbabwe completd the US$150 million Victoria Falls International Airport upgrade and has extended the programme to other airlines including the Robert Mugabe International Airport in Harare which is in the final stages of a major revamp.
Major international airlines with frequencies into Zimbabwe include Ethiopian Airlines, Emirates, Eurowings Discovery and others.
Key regional airlines servicing the country include Airlink and Kenya Airways.

CAAZ Seeks To Increase Number Of Airlines Flying Into Zimbabwe

Ethiopian Airlines is adding Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, as its new destination starting end of October this year.
The airline was already flying into Harare and Victoria Falls. The airline posted on Twitter on Saturday 12 August 2022:

Ethiopian Airlines is pleased to announce the launch of flights to Bulawayo, our third destination city in Zimbabwe next to Harare and Victoria Falls , starting from 30 October 2022.

The development comes as various other airlines, including Emirates, Germany’s Eurowings Discover airline and RwandAir have also entered the country’s air market.
The renewed interest in Zimbabwe as a destination is expected to boost the country’s tourism industry which had been affected by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. 
Zimbabwe has over the years on the list of the world’s safe tourist destinations. Most of Zimbabwe’s top attractions are found outside the main cities. Hwange National Park, Victoria Falls, Mana Pools, Lake Kariba, and Great Zimbabwe National Monument are some of the tourist attractions that have attracted the attention of local and foreign tourists.
With Zimbabwe operating a single plane, the Zimbabwean route remains untapped and hence lucrative for international airlines.

Ethiopian Airlines Launches Flights To Bulawayo

President Mnangagwa has approved the appointment of six people to be substantive board members of Air Zimbabwe, taking over from an interim board that was appointed a year ago.
The substantive board is chaired by Dr Silvano Gwarinda who holds a PhD in Air Transport and Tourism Management from the University of Westminster, London and has close to 40 years of working experience. 
He is deputised by Ms Ruth Raina Hungwe-Rukarwa, a business development specialist with vast strategic marketing experience.
The other board members are:

i). Former Air Zimbabwe chief executive officer Mr Edmund Murambiwa Makona, chartered financial analyst, banker, investment expert.
ii). Commercial lawyer Mr Lawrence Simbarashe Musendekwa, registered legal practitioner who has worked in the aviation industry for years.

iv). Ms Mucharemba Kahombe, an auditor and shareholder representative on the board.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona announced the appointment of the board today. He said:

It is my great honour and privilege, to preside over this meeting where we are witnessing the appointment of the substantive board of directors for the Air Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd.
The substantive board takes over from the interim board, exactly one year and 23 days since the day we appointed the interim board to take over the strategic leadership role of Air Zimbabwe from the administrator, Mr Reggie Saruchera of Grant Thornton on 8 July 2021.
As you are all aware, Air Zimbabwe was placed under Administration in terms of the Reconstruction of State-Indebted Insolvent Companies Act [Chapter 24:27] from 4 October 2018 to 30 June 2021. Mr Saruchera and his team implemented a scheme of reconstruction until 30 June 2021, whereupon we appointed the outgoing interim board on 8 July 2021.

Minister Mhona said air transport was playing an integral role in contributing towards the achievement of an Upper Middle-Income Economy by the year 2030.
He added that although the brand of Air Zimbabwe had been somewhat affected through the turbulence of yesteryear, they were not resting until the airline was fully revived and primed for a solid recovery trajectory.

President Mnangagwa Approves Appointment Of 6 Substantive Board Members Of Air Zimbabwe

Air Zimbabwe has distanced itself from an online survey with a US dollar cash reward for participants purportedly being run by the national airliner.
In a statement, Air Zimbabwe said it has nothing to do with the survey and will not be liable for any claims which may arise thereof. The statement read:

Air Zimbabwe wishes to advise and alert the public that a purported survey (as shown below) with a USD cash participation reward is fake and should be disregarded in its entirety.
The national Airline has not instituted any such survey or promotion. All promotions and surveys are communicated via the Air Zimbabwe official platforms.
The public is therefore urged to neither participate in the survey nor disclose their personal details on this online platform.
Air Zimbabwe will not be liable for any claims which may arise thereof.

Air Zimbabwe Dismisses Purported USD Cash Reward Online Survey

Air Zimbabwe has issued a statement advising that the earlier announced flight disruptions that were blamed on the scarcity of Jet A1 fuel scarcity had been deterred. 
In a statement, seen by Pindula News, the national carrier said the normal supply of fuel will resume. Reads the statement:

The airline had earlier announced that its suppliers had advised of constraints in the movement of fuel. 
Air Zimbabwe also said it would update passengers on the flight schedule changes at the earliest possible time as they continued to monitor the supply situation.
Nigeria also recently suspended its flights citing the same problem.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has disrupted oil and fuel supply and has also seen prices of several commodities going up.

Update On Jet 1 Fuel Scarcity At Air Zimbabwe

Air Zimbabwe says it anticipates disruptions to its flight schedule due to shortages of Jet A1 fuel at airports.
In a statement, the Air Zimbabwe management said they were advised of impending shortages by their suppliers who put the blame on constraints in the movement of the product. Read the statement:

South Africa’s largest airport, O.R Tambo International Airport, recently experienced supply shortages in jet fuel due to floods that affected parts of that country.

Jet Fuel Shortage Hits Air Zimbabwe

Air Zimbabwe has introduced additional flights between Harare and Victoria Falls due to high demand.
In a public notice on Saturday morning, the airliner announced additional flights for 22 and 25 March respectively.

<li>22 March: Victoria Falls to Harare; Departs at 9:30 am – Arrives at 10:30 am.</li>

<li>25 March: Victoria Falls to Harare; Departs at 5 PM – Arrives at 6 PM.</li>

This comes after <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/fastjet-launches-victoria-falls-to-kmia-flights/">Fastjet Zimbabwe, the award-winning value-based airline, launched flights from Victoria Falls to Mbombela Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in South Africa</a> on Wednesday, 16 March 2022.
Fastjet said the new scheduled service route will operate three (3) times a week on a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The airliner said in a statement:

Air Zimbabwe Announces Additional Flights For Harare/ Victoria Falls Route

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has appointed a six-member interim board for Air Zimbabwe following the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/07/04/office-of-the-president-has-fired-air-zimbabwe-administrator/">contract expiry of the airline’s administrator last month.</a>

The minister also dismissed reports that the Air Zimbabwe administrator <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/07/04/office-of-the-president-has-fired-air-zimbabwe-administrator/">Reggie Saruchera was fired by the Office of the President.</a> Saruchera was being accused of failing to transform the fortunes of the national carrier. Mhona said:
<blockquote>_To set the record straight the Air Zim Administrator was not fired but his term came to an end._ 
_Gvt as the shareholder of Air Zim has a duty to put in place an interim mechanism to ensure the airline continues its operations seamlessly._
_The Interim Board will serve in that position until the substantive Board Members have been appointed._
_We are upbeat that through implementation of good governance and accountability principles including mechanisms for regular reporting and feedback on crucial matters, the airline shall strive._

The airline is saddled by a huge debt crisis that has made it impossible to turn around fortunes.
There have been negotiations between the national career and the government to cause the government’s assumption of the debt. that has for years crippled operations.
Air Zimbabwe currently operates two planes only.

Air Zimbabwe Interim Board Appointed

The Office of the President has fired Air Zimbabwe administrator Reggie Saruchera who is being accused of failing to transform the fortunes of the national carrier.
An anonymous source told NewZimbabwe that Saruchera was appointed administrator in October 2018 with specific instructions to turn around the fortunes of the parastatal and clearing its US$349 million local debt which has ballooned ever since. Added the source:
<blockquote>_The 30 June deadline was given by President’s Office after realising that they were taking too long to finalise the process._
_The OPC basically accused Saruchera and his team of failing to turn AirZim’s fortunes around and had become part of the problem at the airline. They were accused of decimating systems to the extent that it will be a huge problem for the incoming board and management._
_Saruchera suggested that management may have to report to the Ministry of Transport for now until a board has been appointed. There are allegations that the administrator was paid a lot of money for the job but with really nothing to show for it._</blockquote>
Air Zimbabwe has two operational planes, a situation that has made it impossible for the airline to meet its financial obligations.
The source added that the two planes that were acquired from Malaysian Airways are lying idle because Air Zimbabwe has no capacity to operate them since they are costly.
They also cannot be used on long haul routes they were specifically acquired for because of the Covid-19 pandemic-induced travel restrictions.
Due to the obtaining financial situation, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/05/06/gvt-set-to-assume-air-zimbabwe-debt/">Air Zimbabwe engaged the government in 2019</a> to conclude a debt assumption process with reports then suggesting the airline owed US$30 million to foreign creditors while nine Government-related firms were owed $292 million.
The government is yet to assume the debt.

Office Of The President Has Fired Air Zimbabwe Administrator

Air Zimbabwe has resumed domestic flights after the airline had failed to resume additional flights from March 28 as initially planned.
Air Zimbabwe spokesperson Ms Firstme Vitori said the domestic flights which are operating on a triangle route – Harare-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls initially and will operate four times a week every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday
She said the resumption will act as a feed to rebuild regional and international routes. Ms Vitori said:

Association of Zimbabwe Travel Agents chairperson Mrs Mercy Mandevhani welcomed the return of domestic flights. She told reporters in Victoria Falls:
<blockquote>_To keep people in their jobs, boosting our trade and tourism, we have got to put planes in the air, and we have got to put tourists on the ground._ 
_This recommencement of domestic flights is a step in the right direction towards boosting tourism which has for the last one year plus, been negatively affected by the pandemic._ 
_What we are looking for is an assurance that at a point in time, as the vaccine roll out is gathering momentum, further travel restrictions and border closures will be ruled out, hence the need for airlines to be operational_
_This resumption will help with connectivity and the travel trade is ready to support Air Zimbabwe and look forward to increased frequencies and additional regional routes._</blockquote>
Other stakeholders including Wenhau Safaris Advisory Group, Perennial Travel and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport said the flights had come at an important time and provided hope for recovery of the tourism sector.

Air Zimbabwe Resumes Domestic Flights

The collapse of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Air_Zimbabwe">Air Zimbabwe</a> coincided with the appointment of the son-in-law of the late former President Robert Mugabe, Simba Chikore, The Standard has reported.
The publication further reports that the flag carrier’s collapse was triggered by over a US$137 million loss in four successive years.
Corporate malfeasance, incompetence, government interference and systemic corruption are some of the factors cited in a confidential document as variables that contributed significantly to Air Zimbabwe’s collapse.
The Standard further reported that Air Zimbabwe has been gradually collapsing and reached the climax when Simba Chikore was heading the airline.
The period under review is when Simba set a shadowy outfit called ZimAirways through public funds. The report prepared by the airline administrator Grant Thornton says Mugabe’s son-in-law was at the helm of both Air Zimbabwe and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Airways">ZimAirways.</a>
The yet-to-be-published report, seen by the Zimbabwe Independent this week, details how Air Zimbabwe plunged into bankruptcy and subsequently grounded operations in 2011.
The state-run airline only resumed operations in 2013, with a leaner staff complement, flying routes and a fleet of outdated aircraft, most of which had been phased out by modern airlines.
In the report prepared by Grant Thornton’s administrator, Reggie Saruchera, AirZim:
<ul>
<li>posted a loss of US$40 106 258 in 2014 with expenses totalling US$71 500 902.</li>
<li>posted a US$28 857 563 loss and incurred US$61 736 856 expenses in 2015.</li>
<li>Revenue generated stood at US$32 879 293.</li>
<li>posted a loss of US$22 289 335 while expenses stood at US$56 506 380 in 2016 while revenue stood at US$34 217 046.</li>
<li>From 2017 to 2018, posted losses of US$33 110 078 and US$14 287 913, respectively.</li>
<li>In 2017, expenses stood at US$62 243 488 and dropped by almost 50% in 2018 at US$31 383 917.</li>
<li>The airline was placed under reconstruction in 2018.</li>
</ul>
Grant Thornton, summarising the depressing financial affairs of AirZim, noted that:
<blockquote>_Historical unaudited financial statements for the four-year period ending 31 December 2017, shows that the airline recorded persistent losses characterised by a decline in revenue._
_Air Zimbabwe’s operating aircraft reduced from a peak of seven in 2009 to two in 2018. In addition, the equipment in use is over 25-years old resulting in high operating costs. The airline is operating in an environment where it is earning most of its revenue in local RTGS. We note however that most of the airline’s costs are denominated in foreign currency._</blockquote>
When the document was prepared on November 28, 2018, AirZim’s liabilities ballooned to US$380 million with an asset portfolio worth US$127 million.
Cumulative debt rose to US$370 million, with US$30 million constituted by foreign liabilities.
The document was submitted to the late Transport minister Joel Biggie Matiza, Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi and AirZim’s creditors.

Air Zimbabwe's Collapse Coincided With The Appointment Of Mugabe's Son-in-law

An Air Zimbabwe pilot captain Kevin Chituku has died under mysterious circumstances, barely 48 hours after the death of two experienced Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) pilots and a technician in a helicopter crash in Goromonzi.
Captain Chituku died while alone at his flat in Highlands, Harare this Sunday late afternoon.
His death was announced by Reverend Dr. Lungile Mpetsheni Rhadebe, who is the General Secretary of the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPCSA).
Kevin’s sister, Lydia Chituku-Neshangwe, who is also a Reverend with a Presbyterian church, also confirmed the death of her pilot brother. She said in a statement:
<blockquote>My brother, Kevin. You used to depart and still land back home. This time you’ve departed, never to come back. May your soul rest in peace. You will always be loved.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Voice quoted sources as saying nothing much was known as the deceased young pilot was alone. A family member said:
<blockquote>Only after the postmortem is conducted will the picture get clearer. Otherwise, we’re all in the dark despite being close family members with our dear departed.</blockquote>
In a message to the church’s members, which the Zimbabwe Voice is in possession of, Dr. Rhadebe consoled the Chituku family and called on members to join in praying for the family. The statement read:
<blockquote>It is with a heavy heart and sadness to inform you that Rev Lydia Neshangwe has lost her brother Kevin Chituku. He was found dead in his house in Highlands, Harare, Zimbabwe this afternoon. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Further details of the will be communicated as they become available.
Let us uphold the Neshangwe and Chituku families in our prayers during this difficult time. Rev Lydia Neshangwe is a minister to St Andrew’s Presbyterian, Hillside, Bulawayo within the Presbytery of Zimbabwe. She is the chaplain of the Moderator of the UPCSA General Assembly.

An Agusta Bell 412 helicopter crashed into an Arcturus house on Friday afternoon, killing Wing Commander Thomas Tinashe Manyowa, Flight Lieutenant Anita Mapiye, and aircraft technician Flight Sergeant Tinodiwanashe Chikamhi, and an 18-month-old toddler Jade Fenyere.

TRAVEL UPDATE: Air Zimbabwe Resumes Domestic, Regional Flights

National Flag Carrier Air Zimbabwe reportedly left Robert Mugabe International Airport in Harare to China to take the second bath of the COVID-19 vaccines donated by China, CGTN reports.
This was contained in a very short update that was posted by CGTN that stated that:
<blockquote>A Zimbabwean charter flight took off from the capital city Harare at noon on Sunday to fetch the second batch of China-donated COVID-19 vaccines as well as the first procurement of the Chinese-made vaccine.
The plane is due to arrive in Beijing on Monday.</blockquote>
The plane is expected to <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/03/12/more-donated-vaccine-expected-next-week/">bring 200 000 more doses of the vaccines donated</a> by China to Zimbabwe according to the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun.
Meanwhile Zimbabwe yesterday did not vaccinate anyone for reasons unknown to this reporter at this point.

Air Zimbabwe Off To China To Get More Donated Vaccines

Air Zimbabwe’s decision to <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/02/28/air-zimbabwe-resumes-harare-tanzania-flights/">resume its Tuesday and Saturday Harare/Tanzania flights (Dar es Salaam)</a> has been described as reckless considering Tanzania’s approach to the coronavirus.
Air Zimbabwe announced Friday that it was commencing its Harare/Tanzania flights on Tuesday 2 March 2021.
While some have hailed the airline, some are concerned over the move citing Tanzania’s approach to the coronavirus pandemic as a great cause for concern.
Reacting to the resumption of Harare/Tanzania flights, United Kingdom-based lawyer, <a href="https://twitter.com/Wamagaisa/status/1365347773101584390">Alex Tawanda Magaisa said:</a>
<blockquote>Quite reckless given Tanzania’s ridiculous approach to the pandemic. Why insist on vaccinations (which I agree with by the way) and still allow travel to and from a country whose leadership has such a primitive attitude towards the pandemic?</blockquote>
Tanzania’s president, John Magufuli has for months been downplaying the impact of the novel virus saying it had been defeated by prayer.
Magufuli, however, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/02/22/john-magufuli-admits-tanzania-has-a-covid-19-problem/">recently admitted indirectly that his country has a COVID-19 problem</a> and urged citizens of the East African country to take precautions and wear face masks, but only locally made ones.
Following his address, the health ministry issued a statement also calling on people to wear face masks and wash their hands to prevent COVID-19 infections.
Magufuli’s remarks came after the World Health Organization (WHO)’s chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/2/21/who-chief-calls-on-tanzania-to-take-action-against-covid-19">urged Tanzania</a> to take “robust action” to tackle the outbreak in the country as “the situation remains very concerning”.
Tanzania has not updated its number of coronavirus infections since April as the president has insisted COVID-19 had been defeated.
This is happening when Zimbabwe has since the outbreak of the coronavirus announced a cocktail of measures meant to curb the transmission of the coronavirus.
The Southern African country is currently vaccinating frontline health care workers.

Air Zimbabwe Resumes Harare - Tanzania Flights

An Air Zimbabwe plane has landed in the Chinese capital, Beijing to transport coronavirus vaccines donated to Zimbabwe by the People’s Republic of China, an official at the Chinese Embassy in Harare has revealed.
According to the Minister counsellor of the Chinese embassy, Zhao Baogang, the plane will arrive in Zimbabwe with the 200 000 doses of vaccines on Monday. Zhao said <a href="https://twitter.com/zhaobaogang2011/status/1360836453484417027" rel="noopener" target="_blank">via</a> Twitter:
<blockquote>Air Zimbabwe plane has already has landed in Beijing and will transport 200 000 doses of vaccines donated by China back to Zimbabwe tomorrow morning. congratulations.</blockquote>
The Government has also confirmed that the vaccines will arrive at 3 AM tomorrow at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
A delegation led by Vice President and Health and Child Care Minister Dr Constantino Chiwenga will receive the consignment, the Sunday Mail reports.

Air Zimbabwe Plane Lands In China To Ferry Covid Vaccines

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Air_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Air Zimbabwe</a> has announced its plans to add new planes to its fleet and to expand its routes as well as to improve service delivery in the year 2021.
The national career has been operating domestic routes on a reduced scale while monitoring the trajectory of the second wave of the pandemic.
The airline now intends to rebuild its regional operations during its first half of 2021, as it plans to introduce twice-daily services to Johannesburg, South Africa from Harare, Zimbabwe followed by destinations to Bulawayo, Congo and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
These plans were announced in a press release by the airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Joseph Makonese. He said:
<blockquote>Our focus in 2021 is fleet augmentation, route expansion and service delivery. While there have been delays in the deployment into service of the ERJ145 (Z-WPQ) we expect the aircraft to be serviceable by the end of January 2021. We are in the process of acquiring a second ERJ145 for deployment into service in the first half of 2021.</blockquote>
Makonese also said that Air Zimbabwe’s domestic operations will continue with three weekly flights between Harare, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Victoria_Falls" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Victoria Falls</a> and Bulawayo.
Three times weekly regional flights are set to begin between Harare and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with tourists and traders having the convenience of connecting with Victoria Falls and Bulawayo.

Air Zimbabwe Targets Fleet And Route Expansion

AirZimbabwe is reportedly planning to introduce 2 aircrafts, to its fleet in the year 2021 as it moves to expand its routes and improve service delivery in 2021, Center For Aviation reports.
This was revealed by the Air Zimbabwe acting CEO Joseph Makonise who reportedly revealed that:

<li>The airline will focus on fleet augmentation, route expansion, and service delivery in 2021.</li>
<li>The entry into service of the airline’s Embraer ERJ145 (Z-WPQ) was delayed, but the aircraft is expected to be serviceable by the end of Jan-2021.</li>
<li>The airline is in the process of acquiring a second ERJ145 for deployment in 1H2021.</li>
<li>The introduction of the aircraft will enable Air Zimbabwe to offer twice daily Harare-Johannesburg, four times weekly Bulawayo-Johannesburg, and three times weekly Harare-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls-Dar Es Salaam services.</li>
<li>The carrier will also increase domestic services to promote tourism and the airline intends to commence Lusaka, Lubumbashi, and Kinshasa services in 2021.</li>

Air Zimbabwe Adjusts Business Hours, Flights

The Supreme Court early this month ruled that the national flag carrier AirZimbabwe should reinstate the workers it fired 5 years ago after the Zuva Petroleum saga that changed labor laws drastically, The Herald reports.
According to the publication, the Supreme Court upheld the labor court’s ruling and ordered that the workers be reinstated or be paid damages in lieu of reinstatement because their dismissal dismissals via three months’ termination notices were slipshod.
The development was confirmed by the AirZimbabwe lawyer Mr Mucheche who said:
<blockquote>..this legal obligation for reinstatement of the unfairly dismissed employees without loss of salary and benefits or payment of damages in lieu of reinstatement
Since the Supreme Court judgment is final and not appealable, the administrator is legally bound.
The employer has a huge backlog of back pay wages and benefits for five years to pay the over 300 reinstated employees.</blockquote>
Air Zimbabwe has even notified fired workers that the reinstatement letters are ready for collection. MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa was one of the lawyers working on the case when the landmark ruling was made in 2016.

AirZim's Festive Season Special Flights Harare-Vic Falls

Former Air Zimbabwe chief operations officer, Simba Chikore, has been summoned back in court to answer to allegations of hiring security services from Safeguard Security company in 2017 without following proper tender procedures.
Chikore who is also the son-in-law to the late former President Robert Mugabe is today expected to appear at the Harare Magistrates’ Court for trial on criminal abuse of duty as a public officer.
He is alleged to have hired the security services for US$16 445 instead of the recommended US$10 000.
Chikore faced same accusations in 2018 with the special anti-corruption unit probing him after a report was lodged implicating him to forgery and abuse of office at state-owned Zimbabwe Airways.

Mugabe's Son-In-Law Summoned To Court

Matilda Simboti has been appointed Air Zimbabwe Acting Sales and Marketing Manager.
In a statement, the national carrier said Simboti has a vast wealth of experience as she has worked in the industry for over 30 years and has won several major awards along the way.
A statement by Air Zimbabwe announcing Simboti’s new role read:
<blockquote>Air Zimbabwe is pleased to announce the appointment of Matilda Simboti as Acting Manager – Sales and Marketing, based at Head office in Harare.
Matilda brings vast knowledge and experience in Airline commercial operations spanning over 30 years at Air Zimbabwe.
Before this appointment, Matilda traversed the length and breadth of Airline marketing and ground operations.
She also briefly served in Lubumbashi, DRC before being transferred to head the commercial business and ground operations in the tourist hub in Victoria Falls.
Matilda has built very strong relations with key stakeholders in the Airline, travel and tourism industry who include regulatory authorities, travel agents, tour operators and other industry associates.
In 2015 she was awarded the Traverze Award for the Most Supportive Airline Staff in Zimbabwe and in 2018 she scooped the Association of Zimbabwe Travel Agents (AZTA) Award for her Outstanding Service to the Industry.
The Airline wishes her the best of success in her new role as it continues to strive through the reconstruction process towards recovery, sustainability and profitability.
