Touts from Harare caused a scene on Sunday when they allegedly seized the coffin of their deceased colleague, Darlington Mukono, and dumped it in his uncle’s shop at Nzvimbe Business Centre in Makoni South.
The touts accused Darlington’s uncle, Joshua Hweniwa Mukono, of causing Darlington’s death.
Darlington, who was employed as a kombi driver, had allegedly collapsed and died while on the steering wheel in Harare. Joshua is the brother of Darlington’s father, Edmore.
The rowdy touts, who were singing and dancing, also pasted the deceased’s pictures around the grocery shop’s wall.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/unwanted-cargo-coffin-dumped-in-shop/">The Manica Post</a>, Abisha Mukono, a cousin to Darlington, denied instigating the touts against their uncle, Joshua.
However, Abisha admitted that Joshua stands accused of causing misfortunes to family members. He said:

Darlington passed on September 27 in Harare where he was working as a kombi driver. He left his house in the morning to go to work, and as he was seated at the steering wheel, his colleagues were shocked to hear him screaming, shouting “ahhh maihweee” and collapsed. They rushed him to the hospital, and he died on admission.
The family was informed of his death, and his body was ferried to Nzvimbe last Saturday night. On Sunday morning, his work colleagues created a scene, demanding an explanation for the death of their friend.
They argued that Darlington’s death was not natural, and resultantly took the coffin to Uncle Joshua’s shop.
As a family, we did not know who informed them about previous squabbles and finger-pointing in the family.
No family members accompanied the touts to the shop where they dumped the coffin on the counter. We only learnt through social media that a coffin was dumped in the shop.
Police from Nyazura arrived when the coffin had been returned home. We later buried the body in the afternoon.

Abisha said none of them had engaged the businessman regarding the family disputes, and added that their uncle did not attend the funeral. He said:

In the past, the family once approached a traditional healer in Nyanga who disclosed that our uncle possesses wealth-enhancing charms causing misfortunes in the family.
We did not pay the n’anga after he demanded US$ 12,000 to cleanse the family. Our uncle also did not pay for the services and agreed to leave his car as surety as he was supposed to undergo some cleansing rituals.
On the return journey, he disembarked from the kombi and ran away. We later learnt that he went to the police to file a theft of motor vehicle charge.
He was accompanied by the police to recover the vehicle, prompting the traditional healer to release it. 
He later filed criminal charges, accusing us of kidnapping, assaulting and accusing him of practising wizardry. The courts cleared us of any wrongdoing.

However, Joshua attributed the family drama to longstanding tensions stemming from their father’s polygamous marriage to three wives.
He denied any involvement in bewitching his relatives and accused his brothers of harbouring jealousy toward his success.
Joshua asserted that traditional healers were perpetuating the animosity, blaming him for the misfortunes and poverty experienced by other family members.
He also claimed that $4,500 was stolen from his grocery shop, along with a variety of food items that were reportedly looted and used to provide for mourners at the funeral. Said Joshua:

I do not even know the deceased, having last seen him when he was a toddler. I just heard that he had passed on, and I went there to pass my condolences.
I slept in my shop since thieves usually pounce when there are funerals in the area. The following day, I proceeded to the funeral, and while on my way I was informed that some people had dumped a coffin at my shop.
They broke into the shop and placed the coffin on the counter. They pasted the deceased’s pictures inscribed rest in peace around the shop.
They looted groceries from my shop, saying as the person responsible for Darlington’s death, I should foot the funeral expenses.
They broke into one of the rooms where I keep cash, and stole US$4 570 and two bags of maize. I reported the theft to the police, who came recorded statements before removing the pictures of the deceased from the walls.

Chief Chiduku said the incident was taboo and was puzzled that the affected parties had not reported the matter to him, as he is the custodian of the area.

Touts in Harare were mad at Darlington's uncle and accused him of causing Darlington's death. They put Darlington's coffin in the uncle's shop. Darlington died while driving a kombi. The touts were upset and made a big show at the uncle's shop. The family had issues with the uncle before. The family denied getting the touts involved. The uncle said he didn't know Darlington and denied any involvement in bad luck for the family. He said the touts stole from his shop and blamed him for the funeral costs. The police got involved. Chief Chiduku was surprised no one told him about what happened.

Touts Seize Coffin Of Deceased Colleague And Dump It In Uncle's Shop

Police in Wiltshire, England stopped a driver with a Zimbabwean licence in Swindon after noticing the car’s front and back plates did not match, reported <a href="https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/24047792.driver-zimbabwe-licence-wrong-numberplates-stopped-swindon/">Swindon Advertiser</a>.
Officers from the Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit spotted the discrepancy at around 3.30 PM on Saturday.
The police officers spoke to the driver of the car about the vehicle’s registration.
They later discovered that one set of plates had expired around nine years ago and that the driver had no insurance.
This resulted in the acting officers reporting the driver, who was using a Zimbabwe licence at the time, for all of the offences.
Wiltshire Police’s Specialist Operations team posted a photo of the car on X (formerly Twitter) and said:

Roads Policing Unit have this vehicle seized in Swindon. Attention drawn as trade plates displayed on the vehicle did not match front and rear. One set expired in 2023, the other in 2015.
Driver on a Zimbabwe licence did not have any insurance. Vehicle and trade plates seized, driver reported.

According to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Zimbabwean drivers can use their licences to drive on roads in Britain.
According to a report by <a href="https://www.allinzimbabwe.com/zimbabwean-drivers-in-the-uk-converting-your-license-the-ministry-of-transport-addresses-your-questions/">AllinZimbabwe</a>, there have been reports of some Zimbabweans using counterfeit metal driver’s licenses in the UK, which has prompted the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in the UK to require Certificates of Competency. These certificates are now part of the conversion process.

Driver With Zimbabwe Licence And Wrong Number Plates Stopped In English Town

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development says it will soon launch a new National Driving Licence System which will among other things, change the present five numerical Classes to the new thirteen alphanumerical categories.
Addressing journalists in Harare Wednesday, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Felix Mhona said 13 categories of the new driving licence will conform to the requirements of the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic; International Organization for Standardization and International Electrotechnical Commission. He added:

The 13 categories of the new Driving licence will, amongst others, make provision for the combination categories of a vehicle and trailer.
The new categories will also accommodate the different sizes of vehicles and prevent the current scenario where drivers are tested on a small vehicle and then be authorised to drive a very large vehicle which the driver may not be able to control in a safe manner.
</blockquote>
The transitional arrangement from the Present Numerical Classes to the New Alphanumerical Categories is as follows:
Class 1 will be known as “DE” – Articulated passenger vehicle for the carriage of persons having more than 16 seats, and may be combined with a trailer not exceeding 750kg GVM
Class 2 will be known as “CE” – Articulated goods vehicle exceeding 7 500kg GVM may be combined with a trailer not exceeding 750kg
Class 3 will be known as “A” – Light motorcycles and medium motorcycles with power not exceeding 35KW, with or without a sidecar.
Class 4 will be known as “BE” – Light articulated vehicle with a GVM not exceeding 3500kg and not having more than 8 seats may be combined with a trailer not exceeding 750kg.
Class 5 will be known as “BE*” – Previously class 5 was only for Agricultural or Industrial tractors or any other suitable vehicles/machinery.
After the transitional phase, the following Professional Driver Permit Categories will come into effect:

Code G for Goods vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass exceeding 3 500kg. The applicable minimum age for this category is 18 years;
Code P for Passenger vehicles with a seating capacity of more than 8. The applicable minimum age for this category is 25 years; and
Code D for Dangerous Goods vehicles for the transportation of Hazardous and Dangerous Goods. The applicable minimum age for this category is 25 years.
</blockquote>
After the transitional phase, the full spectrum of the following codes will apply:
<blockquote>
Codes A (18 years), B1 (18 years) and A1 (16 years) motorcycle/motor powered tri-/quadricycle/light motorcycle;
Codes B (16 years), BE (18 years) light motor vehicle&lt;3 500kg having not more than 8 seats /may draw a light trailer not exceeding 750kg GVM.
Codes C (21 years) and CE (21 years) &gt;7 500kg GVM, Codes C1 (18 years) and C1E (21 years) &gt;3 500kg GVM but not exceeding 7 500kg GVM/ with trailer not exceeding 750 kg.
Codes D1 (25 years) and D1E (25 years) omnibus &gt;8 seats but not more than 16 seats/with trailer not exceeding 750kg.
Codes D (25 years) and DE (24 years) omnibus &gt; 16 seats/ may be combined with a trailer.

Minister Mhona added that the upcoming new Driver’s Licence is fully compliant with the standard specifications of the Southern African Development Community (SADC),  Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and East African Community (EAC).

Zimbabwe To Transition From 5 Numerical Drivers' Licence Classes To 13 Codes

The Government will soon make it mandatory for all drivers to undergo periodic eye tests to ensure that they are fit to be on the road and reduce road traffic accidents.
Professional driver’s permits will be renewed after every two years while other categories of drivers will undergo eye testing and updating of biometric records after every five years.
Holders of newly-acquired Class Two (2) driver’s licences will soon be prohibited from driving haulage trucks popularly known as “gonyeti” as the Government moves to tame the country’s traffic jungle and curb the road carnage.
The Government, through the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID), will soon require would-be professional truck drivers to undergo additional testing to get a Professional Drivers Permit and Defensive Driver’s Certificate consolidated into a single card.
This was said by Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona in a statement issued on Wednesday, 07 June. He said:

The new National Driving Licence System that we will be launching soon will also enhance our capacity to develop an electronic Database of all licenced Drivers which will be linked to all relevant stakeholders and enforcement agencies…
After the transitional phase, the new Driving Licence will consolidate the Professional Driver’s Permit and the Defensive Drivers Certificate onto a single card.
Professional drivers will be progressively certified unlike the current scenario whereby one instantly becomes a professional driver on obtaining a Class Two driver’s disc.
All Professional Drivers’ Permits will be renewable after every two (2) years and the drivers will be required to go for Eye Test to assess vision and the ability to focus on and discern objects.
Similarly, the drivers’ biometrics will also be periodically updated in the System. 
Other drivers outside the Professional Drivers category will also undergo  Eye Test and updating of their biometric records after every 5 years.

Mhona said plans are in to replace the current metal driver’s licences with a new plastic disc that will be issued on 19 June after launching the new national driver’s licences.

Zimbabwean Drivers To Undergo Eye Tests Periodically

A Taxi driver from Kuwadzana Extension, Harare, spent a night at an Apostolic sect shrine after being robbed of his vehicle and money by two unidentified men.
Robert Mungure told <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/taxi-driver-finds-refuge-at-shrine-after-losing-car-cash-to-robbers/">H-Metro</a> that he was hired by the men from Kuwadzana 2 Shopping Centre claiming they wanted to pick up their wives at Long Chen Mall.
He said the two men robbed him at gunpoint and tied him up before dumping him in an industrial area.
Mungure managed to untie himself and went to a nearby Apostolic Church, where he spent the night.
Police officers later found his vehicle dumped in Epworth, without wheels. He said:
<blockquote>
I am yet to recover from the trauma I went through last Friday at the hands of armed robbers.
I failed to pray even after finding refuge at the church shrine where I slept.
Zvekutuka mapurisa zviya unenge usati wasangana nedambudziko (Those who insult the police are those who haven’t been robbed).
Ndakaisa nyaya yangu kwavari ndikazonzwa Saturday vandifonera kuti mota yawanikwa (I reported the matter to the police and on Saturday, they informed me the vehicle had been recovered).
I thank police as well as the apostolic church members who helped me after telling them what I had gone through.

Narrating his ordeal, Robert said he had charged the two men US$10. When they got to the Long Chen main gate, one of the robbers asked him to stop the car so that he could call his wife to inform her that they had arrived. Robert said:

He pretended as if he was taking out a cellphone from his pocket, but instead produced a knife and a pistol.
He ordered me to surrender all the money I had worked for that day.
The other robber grabbed me from behind and pulled me to the back seat.
The armed one pistol-whipped me, and then they tied my hands and legs with shoe laces.
He took my Itel cellphone and cash amounting to US$40 from my pocket and also tore my trousers and belt during the search.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Harare Province Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident.
He urged the public to report any suspicious movements and avoid night trips.
