The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) deployed riot police to Glen Norah where they indiscriminately assaulted residents of Tanaka during the night. This action followed the tragic murder of Tinashe Chitsunge, a member of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), by suspected ZANU PF supporters.
Tanaka primarily consists of ZANU PF supporters who were allocated residential stands by the ruling party. In the aftermath of the incident, some individuals sought temporary refuge with their relatives. Notably, police patrols were observed in the area as early as 8 am, indicating an intensified presence.
According to sources, riot police, locally known as the ‘black boots’ arrived on Wednesday night and proceeded to assault individuals. One source mentioned being fortunate not to have been among those attacked and stated their decision to stay with their aunt until the situation calms down. The source told New Zimbabwe:

The black boots came yesterday (Wednesday) at night and went about beating up people.
We were fortunate not to have been part of those beaten. I have since decided to go to my aunt’s house for a few days until the situation here subsides.
</blockquote>
Residents expressed fear in commenting on the matter. Police on Friday reported that ten suspects had been arrested in connection with Chitsunge’s murder. Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe later claimed 12 had been arrested. He said:

My ministry deeply regrets the loss of life which occurred and passes its condolences to the family of Tinashe Edson Chitsunge. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has since arrested 12 suspects in connection with this sad incident.
</blockquote>
CCC leader Nelson Chamisa condemned the brutal killing and called on the police to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice is served. Amnesty International, an international human rights organisation, also strongly condemned the violent murder of Tinashe Edson Chitsunge.
Eyewitnesses reported that Chitsunge was brutally assaulted by suspected Zanu-PF supporters while heading to a rally at Tanaka grounds. Although the rally had police authorisation, some Zanu-PF supporters disregarded the authorities and took control of the location. CCC engaged the police to displace the Zanu-PF crowds but was overwhelmed, leading to the ruling party supporters viciously attacking Chitsunge.

Riot Police Assault Tanaka Residents After Chitsunge's Murder By ZANU PF Supporters

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the arrest of ten suspects in connection with the murder of Tinashe Edson Chitsunge, a supporter of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). Chitsunge was tragically stoned to death by suspected ZANU PF supporters in Glen Norah, Harare on Thursday. In an update seen by Pindula News, the ZRP has confirmed that the suspects are currently under investigation and cooperating with the police. Reads the police update

Reference is made to the Glennorah violence which occurred on 03/08/23 resulting in the death of Tinashe Edson Chitsunge. ZRP confirms that 10 suspects have now been arrested and are assisting the Police with investigations.

Former Information Minister, Jonathan Moyo, praised the swift action taken by the police in response to the update. He commended the authorities for their efforts to bring the criminals responsible for Chitsunge’s murder to justice. He posted on Twitter:

This swift action is commendable @PoliceZimbabwe, the book should be thrown at the cowardly criminals who murdered Tinashe Chitsunge in such deplorable circumstances, to send a tough message to other similarly-minded criminal thugs out there that there is no place for them to hide!

Violence during elections has been an ongoing concern in Zimbabwe. Prior to the by-elections on 26th March 2022, 35-year-old Mbongeni Ncube, a member of the CCC, was fatally stabbed at a rally in Kwekwe. Suspected activists of the ruling ZANU PF party were arrested in connection with the incident. However, the latest information indicates that 11 out of the 16 suspects were granted bail, and no further updates have been provided. Ncube’s family, at some point went into hiding after reports that a key witness was being harassed.
Critics of the government argue that such acts of violence are employed as a means to intimidate voters into supporting candidates aligned with the ruling party. This manipulation of violence is seen as an attempt to influence the electorate and undermine the democratic process.

Ten Suspects Arrested Over Murder Of CCC Supporter: ZRP

A 21-year-old <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mbare">Mbare</a> man was beaten up after being caught trying to kidnap a one-year-old toddler in Glen Norah on Monday.
Willie Chindundundu reportedly hid the child under his apostolic white garment but was caught before he could disappear with the child.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, said they were still investigating the matter.
What happened: Allegations are that some children were playing outside in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Glen_Norah">Glen Norah</a> C on Tuesday at around 5 pm.
As Willie approached, the other children ran away leaving the toddler behind.
Willie took the child and hid him under his garment, and walked away. Inspector Chakanza told <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/mob-bashes-man-for-kidnapping-toddler-claims-many-children-are-hidden-in-mountains/">H-Metro</a>:

He was caught by Glen Norah C residents after the child’s mother asked other children who were running away where her son was.
</blockquote>
 The children told the little boy’s mother that a man wearing a white garment had taken the baby. A resident said:

Hanzi amuisa mugemenzi, so residents chased after him. When he was about to get into a getaway car, the vehicle sped off as they were about to catch Willie.
</blockquote>
He was assaulted by the mob before the arrival of the police and confessed that he had kidnapped many other children who were in the mountains.
He, however, did not disclose what he does with the children he kidnaps.

Mbare Man Assaulted By Residents For Baby-Kidnapping, Reveals More Are In The Mountain

Opposition <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Citizens%27_Coalition_for_Change">Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)</a> Saturday vowed to go ahead with its rally set for Harare this Sunday despite the refusal by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to sanction the gathering.
Police on Friday said the party led by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa">Nelson Chamisa</a>, a former Minister of ICT during the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Government_of_National_Unity">Government of National Unity (GNU)</a>, will not be allowed to go ahead with the rally in Glen Norah for allegedly failing to comply with provisions of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act.
CCC has since <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/ccc-challenge-police-by-election-victory-celebrations-ban/">approached the High Court challenging the ZRP’s position</a>.
Posting on Twitter, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gift_Ostallos_Siziba">Gift Ostallos Siziba</a>, the party’s deputy spokesperson, accused the police of selectively applying the law. He wrote:

We are in court to challenge the police’s unreasonable action to interfere with our freedom to assemble at a victory rally in Glenorah. We are not going to accept our country to have one law for Zanupf &amp; another for the rest of the citizens. We will fight back &amp; assert our rights.

 In a letter seen by Pindula News, M Majojo, Chief Superintendent Officer Commanding Harare South District said:

1. Reference is made to your letter dated the 210 of July 2022 in connection with the above subject. In the letter, you notified to hold a By-Election Celebration Party at Chembiro Community Hall. Glen Norah A. Harare on the 310 of July 2022 from 1000 hours to 1600 hours.
2. May you be advised that the notice to hold the By-Election Celebration Party served on us does not comply with the mandatory requirements of Section 7 (2) of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act [Chapter 11:231 and as such, the intended celebrations have not been sanctioned.
3. Accordingly referred please.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and other Zanu PF bigwigs have been holding rallies across the country without any police interference.
Gift Ostallos Siziba told <a href="https://thestandard.newsday.co.zw/2022/07/31/chamisa-party-defiant-after-ban/">the Standard</a> that they will be going ahead with the rally as planned. He said:

We are continuing with our preparations to host the rally where the party leadership is going to address.
We are leaving no stone unturned to win the 2023 elections.”

The Standard reports that ZRP spokesperson Paul Nyathi yesterday said he was not aware that the CCC rally had been banned.
In the runup to the 26 March by-elections, police blocked some CCC rallies citing a number of issues including manpower shortages and the absence of the venue.

CCC Vows To Go Ahead With Glen Norah Rally Despite Police Ban

Graves in Harare’s Glen Norah high-density suburb will be removed and the area will be converted into 300 residential stands.
A notice of an application for the removal of human remains published in a recent Government Gazette reads:

Notice is hereby given that Glen Norah Housing Consortium has made an application, in terms of section 38 of the Cemeteries Act [Chapter 5:04].
To Harare City Council to undertake the removal of human remains from Residential Site TPX-WR-09/12 (300 Stands Glen Norah Township) to facilitate the development of residential stands.
</blockquote>
Reports suggest the area being targeted is commonly known as Makunye around the Glen Norah flats area.
The notice advises people with any objections to the approval of such application to lodge their objections, in writing, with the Director of Amenities on the Fourth Floor, Rowan Martin Building, Harare.
They should do so within three months of the first publication of the notice.
Ward councillor, former Mayor Herbert Gomba (CCC), confirmed the development.
He said the area was allocated by the local authority to a group of cooperatives sometime between 2013 and 2014.
Clr Gomba added that there is nothing wrong with the allocation of residential stands on graves if the law is followed. He said:

They advertise inviting relatives to come forward and join in the exhumation. However, if they don’t then they are going to be reburied at cemeteries including Granville cemetery (commonly known as Mbudzi).

Harare To Allocate Residential Stands On Graveyard

A Glen Norah 1 High School science teacher has quit his job after his alleged love affair with a Form 4 pupil was exposed.
The Form 4 girl was caught texting the teacher, Gladwin Parawira, but he denied the two were dating. Said Parawira:

I never had an affair with that girl. I admit that we used to flirt and it is very unfortunate that the messages were caught after I stopped flirting with her.
I immediately stopped talking to this girl when I heard that she was telling some of the students that we were dating.
She began stalking me on Facebook, asking me who is who on my posts, but I ignored her since I knew she was troubled.

Parawira told H-Metro that he had decided to resign because the messages he used to send to the pupil were too explicit. He said:

I decided to resign from my job because the messages were nasty, and according to the law, I must not even say goodnight to a student, what more of the messages I sent her?

Another land scam has reportedly unfolded in Glen Norah, Harare with ZBC News reporting that there is a house built on a road.
This comes as some residents who had built their houses in wetlands have lost properties worth thousands of dollars after their homes had flooded following recent rains.
A Glen Norah resident who spoke to ZBC News also said a council official has already started building in a crescent, and two more houses have already been built under power lines. The anonymous resident said:
<blockquote>We have tried to raise concern over the construction of houses in inappropriate areas. That house is under a power line. Here again, it’s a house being built on a road.</blockquote>
This is happening when Harare City Council is in the process of demolishing structures erected on undesignated sites or illegally acquired land.
Only recently, the local government razed down almost 200 houses in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Budiriro">Budiriro</a> as it had emerged they had been allocated without following due council procedures.
Meanwhile, National Housing and Social Amenities minister, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/11/14/illegal-houses-wont-be-spared-from-demolitions-garwe/">Daniel Garwe, said all houses built on illegally allocated public land will be demolished</a> as Government seeks to restore order in urban settlements.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa also declared war on land barons who have for years been duping desperate land seekers.
Some observers slammed the local authority for watching as structures are erected and only come to demolish when owners would have lost thousands of dollars.
There are some who believe that the bogus housing schemes are a creation of the ruling ZANU PF as a strategy to win votes from those who would have been allocated the land.

MDC Loses 90-year-old Veteran Party Supporter

ZORA music maestro Leonard Karikoga Zhakata’s show at Specimen in Glen Norah over the weekend attracted a crowd of only 20 people according to a 263Chat report.
The show reportedly failed to kick off on time as there were very few people at the venue.
A reveller who tried to negotiate for a discounted entry fee with the bouncers was heard saying:
<blockquote>Handisi kuda kumbogara mukati umu ini, ndiri kuda kungonzwa hangu Madam Boss ndodzoka zvangu paden (I’m not here for the whole show, I just want to see him perform Madam Boss then I go back home).</blockquote>
Zhataka took the airwaves by storm when he released his immortal song “Mugove” in the 1990s. His fame continued to soar for over a decade with songs such as Gomba Remarara, Upenyu Mutoro and Pane Ziya Pane Dovi.
However, the Mugove hitmaker’s fortunes nosedived when he released ‘Mubikira’ which resulted in the censorship of his music by ZBC.
