Twenty-three cattle died in Rixton Village, Mhangura, Zimbabwe on January 13, 2024, likely due to cyanide poisoning. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating the incident. According to a statement seen by Pindula News, the police said the cattle died immediately after drinking water from a stream near a gold ore leaching plant. Read the statement:

Cattle have great importance in Zimbabwe and Africa as a symbol of wealth. Losing 23 cattle, as happened in this incident, is a significant loss for both the individuals affected and the entire nation. Cattle are valuable assets that contribute to the national herd, so losing them means losing a substantial amount of wealth. It is a loss that impacts not only the immediate owners but also the wider community and the country as a whole.
This incident raises concerns about the discharge of water contaminated with harmful substances into rivers by gold miners, which poses risks to both humans and animals.
The case is not the first one of its nature. In March 2022, a Chinese-owned gold mine near Karoi reportedly spilt cyanide-laced slimes into the Angwa River, resulting in the death of fish and endangering the lives of villagers downstream. In July of the same year, it was reported that gold miners in Mudzi and Nyanga were releasing water containing poisonous substances, including cyanide and mercury, into rivers. This pollution caused the death of livestock and potential health complications for villagers. Kunyu Mining (Pvt) Ltd, a Chinese-owned company, was specifically highlighted as a major polluter, discharging waste into the Nyamombe River.
The pollution of rivers in Manicaland became so widespread that neighbouring Mozambique lodged a formal complaint with Zimbabwean authorities.

23 Cattle Die On Spot After Drinking Water Near A Gold Ore Leaching Plant

Zimbabwe’s monthly gold deliveries are expected to decrease by almost half of the usual two tonnes due to protests by artisanal and small-scale miners against the government’s recent policy change. Previously, these miners were receiving 100% of their payments in hard currency, but now they are required to receive 75% in US dollars and the remaining amount in Zimbabwe’s currency.
The policy change is believed to be an attempt by the government to raise civil service bonuses. Artisanal and small-scale miners, also known as Makorokoza/Amakorokoza, contribute about 60% of the country’s gold output.
According to sources at the government-owned Fidelity Gold Refinery, gold deliveries have been slow and have not exceeded one tonne with only 14 days left in the month.
Although the country has been facing economic difficulties for the past decade, the payment of bonuses to civil servants usually takes place in November. An anonymous source told NewZimbabwe:

The situation is not looking good, deliveries have considerably gone down and this will definitely have an impact on the national purse. 
 We hear this was meant to raise money to pay civil servants’ bonuses but from what we are seeing the plan is backfiring. Artisanal miners have virtually stopped deliveries because they feel government should have communicated or discussed with them. 
 Most of them rarely use the local currency, they do not have bank accounts or use RTGS transfer platforms, they only know US dollars.

During a parliamentary session, Mines Deputy Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Polite_Kambamura/">Polite Kambamura</a> addressed concerns regarding the payment of artisanal miners. He stated that mobile gold buying units have been introduced by Fidelity Printers to enable miners in remote areas to sell their gold legally. Moreover, licenses are being issued to private buyers to purchase gold directly from mining areas. However, artisanal miners claim that they have not received the promised 25% payment.
Gold is one of the major sources of foreign currency for Zimbabwe. Usually, mining activities slow down during the first and fourth quarters of the year because of rainy seasons. The rain increases the risk of landslides and mine collapses, which can be dangerous for miners.

Zimbabwe's Monthly Gold Deliveries Expected To Decrease By Almost Half

Members of Parliament across the political divide on Thursday demanded action to stop illegal gold mining in disused mine shafts in Kwekwe which threatens buildings in the Midlands city, reported <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/mps-demand-action-over-kwekwe-sinkholes-from-illegal-mining/">ZimLive.com</a>.
In March, a Globe and Phoenix Primary School classroom caved in, resulting in 18 pupils being injured.
In May, House Number 1 Silver Oaks, also in Globe and Phoenix low-density suburb collapsed into an underground mine shaft.
Legislators who are members of the portfolio committee on mines and mining development accused the Government of doing nothing to stop the illegal mining activities.
Kwekwe Central MP Judith Tobaiwa (CCC), said:

My worry is we have been hearing all these contributions from government departments; what have they done to resolve these issues?
Now there are mining activities along the Harare Road and also along Robert Mugabe Road.
</blockquote>
Mberengwa East MP Marko Raidza (ZANU PF) said:
<blockquote>
We are not hearing solutions and interventions that they are doing to arrest the situation.
We need firm commitment and activities to stop this illegal mining before a big disaster happens.
</blockquote>
Mutasa Central legislator Trevor Saruwaka (CCC), said:

It looks like there is an umbilical cord to this madness. The challenge could be because political heavyweights are involved in illegal mining activities such that these government departments are failing to rein them in.

Appearing before the committee, Midlands mining engineer Tapererwa Paskwavaviri acknowledged that there is a high number of sinkholes in Kwekwe. He said:

There is a prevalence of sinkholes in Kwekwe which resulted in the damage of roads and buildings.
At the moment, if you go to the district coordinator’s offices, a number of buildings have large cracks in the walls.
The Kwekwe reservoir which is next to Globe and Phoenix is in danger as we speak and our fear is that if illegal mining continues around that area, the water tank can collapse and that will result in a disaster.
There is a danger that the tunnels could be extending towards the CBD (Central Business District).

Mines and Mining Development Ministry permanent secretary <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Pfungwa_Kunaka">Pfungwa Kunaka</a> said the government is seized with the matter.
<blockquote>
We know that because of mining activity, the ground beneath Kwekwe is now weak.
The March 2023 collapse drew our attention as the entire government. The Kwekwe issue is being treated as an emergency situation.
This matter is now at the Cabinet level being addressed. On the outlook, it may appear like there is no progress.

It also emerged that most mining towns across the country are at risk of caving in as a result of the effects of illegal mining being done in decommissioned and disused mines.

MPs Demand Action Over Kwekwe Mining Sinkholes Menace

The Mashonaland Central provincial mining director, one T. Ndhlovu, has issued a memorandum inviting miners to show interest in mining activities on 10 farms in the province, including Foyle and Smithfield.
Foyle Estate is owned by the former First Family, the Mugabes’ <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gushungo_Dairy" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Gushungo Dairy</a> while Smithfield Farm is where an orphanage set up by the former first lady, Grace Mugabe is located. The memo reads in part:
<blockquote>All miners who used to hold mining titles (claims) in the above-named farms are invited to report to the Mashonaland Central provincial mining office in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Bindura" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bindura</a> and re-inspect them as soon as possible.
We are extending this grace period for 60 days with effect from September 19, 2019, beyond which we will assume all those who hold such interests would have restored them.</blockquote>
The Mugabes grabbed vast tracts of farmland in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mazowe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mazowe</a> at the height of their power. They went on to establish their businesses on the farms, driving out small-scale gold miners in the process.

Govt Offers Mugabe Farms To Gold Miners

South African gold mines have issued a notice calling on gold mineworkers, former mineworkers, or their dependants to consider their eligibility to claim for compensation for exposure to dangerous dust during the mineworker’s employment.
The call follows a high court judgement in the Bongani Nkala and 67 others <a href="https://www.silicosissettlement.co.za/resources/media-releases/17-court-approves-settlement-of-the-silicosis-and-tb-class-action">class-action suit which approved a settlement</a>.
The notice issued today says “eligible claimants will be entitled to receive a once-off payment of between R10 000 and R250 000 depending on the nature and seriousness of the disease.”
Many former mineworkers in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and other countries in the region may be eligible for the compensation. South African gold mines pulled migrant workers in Africa looking for better-paying jobs life as their home countries offered few opportunities for African men.
Said the notice published in newspapers in Zimbabwe today:

<h2>OPT OUT NOTICE</h2>
You may be eligible to claim compensation if you’re currently or have been a GOLD MINEWORKER in South Africa, at any time after 12 March 1965, and have been exposed to silica dust or you have contracted silicosis or tuberculosis (“TB”) OR you are A DEPENDANT (for example, the wife, child or life partner) of such a gold mineworker who has since passed away, PLEASE READ THIS NOTICE CAREFULLY AS IT MAY AFFECT YOUR RIGHTS. 
<h3>THE SETTLEMENT</h3>
On 3 May 2018, six mining companies _ African Rainbow Minerals, Anglo American SA, AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony and Sibanye -Stillwater and some of their affiliates (“the participating gold mining companies”) reached a Conditional settlement to pay compensation to eligible gold mineworkers and the dependants of such mineworkers who have passed away. The proposed settlement will settle the claims against the participating gold mining companies arising from the class action that was initiated before the High Court for:
<ul>
<li>the harm and loss suffered by mineworkers who contracted silicosis and/or TB during their work on certain gold mines in South Africa, and</li>
<li>the harm and loss suffered by the dependants of mineworkers who died of these diseases.</li>
</ul>
The settlement was approved by the High Court in Johannesburg on 26 July 2019.
<h3>WHO IS INCLUDED IN THE SETTLEMENT?</h3>
You are a class member, and will be included in the settlement, if you meet all the requirements of any of the four classes:
<h4>Class 1:</h4>
All People:
<ol>
<li>who as at the date when the settlement agreement comes into force, have undertaken risk work. In terms of the settlement agreement, risk work means “risk work” as defined in the Occupational Diseases in Mines and Works Act, 1973 or any of the following work. 
(i) work in the underground workings of a gold mine; 
(ii) work in a laundry where clothing of underground mineworkers is washed; 
(iii) work on a slimes dam of a gold mine; 
(iv) work in an assay laboratory of a gold mine where the composition of gold bearing ore is analysed, and where the mass of respirable dust from personal sampling is determined; 
(v) work in a metallurgical plant of a gold mine, including crushing, milling, transporting and smelting of ore; and 
(vi) work at conveyor belt operations which are undertaken to convey broken rock from the underground operations of a gold mine to surface;</li>
<li>who on or before the date when the settlement agreement comes into force, have contracted silicosis or have been exposed to silica dust;</li>
<li>who undertake or have undertaken risk work on one or more of the mines listed in Annexure A of this notice after 12 March 1965; and</li>
<li>who did not settle their claims in previously finalised settlements with Anglo American South Africa Limited and AngloGold Ashanti Limited on 14 March 2016 and Anglo American South Africa Limited on 19 September 2013, respectively.</li>
</ol>
<h4>Class 2:</h4>
The dependants of any of the persons in Class 1 above who are deceased as at the date when the settlement agreement comes into force.
<h4>Class 3:</h4>
All people:
<ol>
<li>who as at the date when the settlement agreement comes into force have undertaken risk work;</li>
<li>who on, before or after the date when the settlement agreement will come into force have contracted Tuberculosis; and</li>
<li>who undertake or have undertaken risk work, after 12 March 1965, on one or more of the gold mines listed in Annexure A of this notice.</li>
</ol>
<h4>Class 4:</h4>
The dependants of any of the persons in Class 3 above who are deceased as at the date when the settlement agreement comes into force.
<h3>WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF THE SETTLEMENT?</h3>
The settlement is not yet in force because some of its conditions have not yet been met. If the conditions are met, the participating gold mining companies will establish a fund, called the TSHIAMISO TRUST.
If the settlement agreement comes into force:
<ul>
<li>The participating gold mining companies will pay agreed contributions to the Tshiamiso Trust and the process of paying compensation can start.</li>
<li>All class members can submit a claim to the Tshiamiso Trust for monetary compensation, except for those class members who opt out of the settlement.</li>
<li>Details of how to submit a claim to the Tshiamiso Trust will be published in the media and on the website <a href="https://www.silicosissettlement.co.za/">www.silicosissettlement.co.za</a></li>
<li>The Tshiamiso Trust will pay compensation to eligible claimants. An eligible claimant is a person who is a member of any of the classes and who meets the requirements of the Tshiamiso Trust to receive monetary compensation.</li>
<li>Class members must submit a completed claim form to the Tshiamiso Trust and may have to undergo a medical examination to determine if they are  eilgible claimants.</li>
</ul>
Once the settlement agreement is in force, eligible claimants will be entitled to receive 
a once-off payment of between R10 000 and R250 000, depending on the nature and 
seriousness of the disease. In certain exceptional circumstances, this amount may be 
increased to up to R500 000.

SA Gold Mines Announce Compensation For Mineworkers Employed From 1965 Onward

Large scale mining companies who attended the recent Chamber of Mines annual general meeting and conference in Victoria Falls are appealing to Government for incentives and other support measures so as to boost production to desired levels.
The mining firms feel that Government has sidelined them and is favouring small scale miners with incentives. How Mine general manager, Mr Demand Gwatinetsa said small scale miners had contributed more gold than large firms because Government is stifling growth through bureaucracy. Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee for Mines and Energy, Temba Mliswa, also called on Government to capacitate larger mining firms as they contribute to the economy by paying taxes and royalties, which are “evaded” by small scale producers.
Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe deputy governor Kupikile Mlambo said financing small scale miners was an option that came because Government was looking for quick returns. He appealed to miners to understand that the facility was meant to focus on small scale miners.
