The government of Lesotho has expressed shock after US President Donald Trump referred to the country as a place “nobody has ever heard of” on Tuesday.
Trump made the comment during his first speech since returning to the Oval Office, where he was discussing cuts to what he called wasteful spending.
He mentioned a $8 million expenditure to promote LGBTQI+ rights in Lesotho, adding, “which nobody has ever heard of,” causing some US lawmakers to laugh.
Speaking to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0q18x0192yo">BBC,</a> a spokesperson for Lesotho’s foreign affairs department responded by saying that the country has “warm and cordial” relations with the US.
Lesotho also benefits from the US’s African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which offers favourable trade terms to boost economic growth.
Lesotho’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Lejone Mpotjoane, said it was “shocking” for a head of state to refer to another country in such a manner. He said:

To my surprise, ‘the country that nobody has heard of’ is the country where the US has a permanent mission.
Lesotho is a member of the UN and of a number of other international bodies. And the US has an embassy here and [there are] a number of US organisations we’ve accommodated here in Maseru.

Officials have dismissed Trump’s comments as an “off the cuff” and “political statement,” saying they were “uncalled-for” considering the strong relations between the two countries. Foreign affairs spokesperson Kutloano Pheko told the BBC:
<blockquote>
We maintain very warm and cordial relations with the US. They’ve got a mission in Maseru and we also have [one] in Washington.
</blockquote>
Pheko could not confirm Trump’s comments about the funding to LGBTQ organisations, saying that since the money went directly to them, they would be in a better position to comment.
Mpotjoane, on the other hand, confirmed that the country had been impacted by Trump’s sudden decision to pause aid funding to countries around the world.

The Zimbabwe Consulate in Johannesburg said that it will embark on mobile consular outreaches in Lesotho on 30 November and 01 December 2023.
In a public notice issued on Monday, 20 November, Zimbabwe Consul General Eria Phiri said:

Zimbabwean Consulate To Provide Vital Documents To Citizens In Lesotho

Authorities in Lesotho have imposed an indefinite curfew with the aim of reducing gun violence in the small southern African kingdom by restricting the movement of people at night.
This curfew was put into effect on Tuesday, shortly after a well-known radio journalist was fatally shot, an event that deeply affected the country, Al Jazeera reported citing a notice published in the government gazette on Tuesday. Reads the notice in part:

A curfew is imposed on all persons throughout the Kingdom of Lesotho with effect from today.
</blockquote>
Residents in Lesotho are prohibited from being outside between 10 pm (20:00 GMT) and 4 am (02:00 GMT) as stated in a document signed by police commissioner Holomo Molibeli.
Those who fail to comply with this curfew may receive a fine or face up to two years in jail.
Police Minister Lebona Lephema stated that this measure is aimed at addressing the issue of gun violence throughout the country.
The decision to impose this curfew came after the death of journalist Ralikonelo Joki, who was shot by unknown assailants as he was leaving his workplace on Sunday night.
Joki, who hosted current affairs show on local private radio, had received death threats in relation to his work as a journalist.
Investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has called for a credible investigation into Joki’s death and for those responsible to be brought to justice.
Lesotho has a high number of unlicensed firearms in circulation, leading to frequent gang-related shootings in the country.

Lesotho Imposes Indefinite Curfew Following Murder Of A Journalist

The opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC)’s “Change Champion in Chief” Nelson Chamisa is in, Maseru, Lesotho where he is attending the inauguration of the country’s new Prime Minister Sam Matekane.
Chamisa said he was honoured to be invited to the event, describing the Matekane’s takeover of the reigns in the mountainous kingdom as a smooth democratic transition. He tweeted:

Chamisa Attends New Lesotho Prime Minister's Inauguration

CCC leader Nelson Chamisa reportedly left the country on Wednesday for Lesotho to attend the inauguration of the country’s new prime minister, Sam Matekane (64), set for Friday.
Matekane’s six-month-old party won 56 out of 120 parliamentary seats but had to form a coalition government with two other parties after it failed to secure an absolute majority (at least 61 seats).
NewZimbabwe.com reported sources within CCC as saying Chamisa was among the invited guests to attend Matekane’s inauguration. Said the source:

He (Chamisa) flew out early Wednesday morning heading for Lesotho following the honour of having him as one of the invited dignitaries.

Lesotho Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro has resigned after his political party All Basotho Convention (ABC) lost elections held on 07 October 2022.
A newly-formed political party Revolution for Prosperity (RFP), launched by Sam Matekane on 22 March 2022, won the heavily contested polls.
Majoro has handed over his resignation letter to King Letsie III. The King has accepted the letter and has requested Majoro to remain in office until the swearing-in of the new Prime Minister.
Matekane’s RFP has formed a coalition government with the Alliance of Democrats and the Movement for Economic Change after it didn’t get an outright majority in the recent polls.
The RFP won 56 out of 120 seats in parliament but needed the support of other parties to reach the 60 plus-one seats required to form a government.
Matekane recently said they will be using personal cars and staying in their homes until things have gone back to normalcy.
Asked if they still insist on not using state cars or government residences, Matekane said:

Indeed, I still maintain I have not flip-flopped. We are aware that government follows protocols.
We will peruse the law, and seek council, but we maintain that things are done right.
We wish to use our family cars, and our own residences up until the matters of economy look stable.

The National Assembly is expected to reconvene for the swearing-in of the new parliamentarians who will appoint the Prime Minister, who will then be inaugurated after being presented to the King.

Opposition CCC leader Nelson Chamisa has urged young people to participate in politics to bring about change in Zimbabwe as has happened in several Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries over the past two years.
Chamisa has expressed optimism that the opposition will win next year’s elections if young people register to vote and vote in large numbers in next year’s general elections.
This comes after opposition parties won elections in Zambia, Malawi and most recently Lesotho. Said Chamisa:

South African opposition leader Mmusi Maimane, the founder of the One South Africa Movement, concurred with Chamisa. He said:

There is a wind of democratic change in southern Africa. First, it was Malawi, then it was Zambia, and now a brand new party in Lesotho has shaken the country.
Next year it will be Zimbabwe gaining its second independence. Then in 2024, we the people of SA will remove the African National Congress.

Zimbabwe and Nigeria are scheduled to hold general elections next year while South Africa will conduct elections in 2024.

Opposition Wins Elections In Lesotho, Chamisa Says Zimbabwe Is Next

Ex Lesotho Prime Minister Thomas Thabane paid a team of hitmen over $20 000 to murder his beleaguered wife in 2017 according to Lesotho Police statements, The Guardian reports.
The $20k was supposed to be a part payment of the $180 000 the hitmen would eventually pocket after taking the life of Lipolelo who has refused to be divorced and won a court case that would see her retain her first lady privileges until they reached a formal separation.
It is believed Thabane and his current wife Maesaiah wanted Lipolelo dead so that Maesaiah could resume her duty as the first lady and the 2 married 2 months after the murder of Tom Thabane’s first wife.
In opposing bail for the Maesaiah who is in custody right now, the deputy commissioner of police, Paseka Mokete said:
<blockquote>(Thabane and Maesaiah) wanted the deceased dead so that [Maesaiah] … could assume the position of first lady, Maesaiah had previously stated she “would like to get rid of the deceased”</blockquote>
Mokete went on to say:
<blockquote>
(The)infamous Famo gang, notorious for displaying violence and for brutal killings, who had been promised the equivalent of $179,485 to be paid in instalments.
They would be remunerated in cash … and through employment opportunities, should they carry out the murder of the deceased prior to [Thabane’s] inauguration as prime minister.

Thabane resigned last month after pressure mounted on him to resign following the new development in the murder case.

Former Lesotho Prime Minister Paid  A Team Of Hitmen To Kill His Wife - Lesotho Police

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation (OPDSC), has called for a peaceful power transition in Lesotho after murder-accused Prime Minister Thomas Thabane, stepped down on Tuesday.
Four SADC leaders who took part in a security meeting on Mozambique said they had taken note of Thabane’s resignation, and called for a peaceful transfer of power.
The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security is made up of the leaders of Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia. The troika said in a communique:
<blockquote>The Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit plus Mozambique noted the latest developments in the Kingdom of Lesotho and called for the peaceful transfer of power in line with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Lesotho.</blockquote>
Thabane has been under pressure from his party to resign after being implicated in the murder of his estranged wife in 2017.
Thabane and his co-accused, his current wife, have both denied the murder charge.
Meanwhile, South Africa is mediating the Lesotho crisis on behalf of SADC.

Lesotho Prime Minister Thomas Thabane has announced he will step down following months of pressure after he was named as a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife.
Thabane did not say when he would leave office but his party said a new premier would be sworn in on Tuesday.
The 80-year-old’s current wife, Maesaiah Thabane (42), with whom he was living at the time of the murder, was charged in connection with the killing in February.
Thabane’s-then estranged wife Lilipelo (58), was shot dead in June 2017, two days before he took office for a second stint as premier, and two months before he married his current wife.
The pair have denied any involvement.

Murder-accused Lesotho Prime Minister Resigns

Lesotho’s 80-year-old Prime Minister, Thomas Thabane, has been granted sick leave until February 27 when he will have to appear in court on charges of murdering his wife.
This was revealed by the country’s Deputy Police Commissioner Paseka Mokete on Saturday. He said:
<blockquote>New arrangements for him to appear before a court shall be made as he has to be fit for an appearance.
So there is no warrant of arrest issued as yet. His sick leave starts from yesterday and ends on 27 February.</blockquote>
Thabane was due to be charged on Friday, but he failed to appear in court and instead travelled to South Africa for what his aides said was a routine medical check-up.
Lesotho police had threatened to issue an arrest warrant for Thabane if he was trying to evade justice.
Thabane’s-then estranged wife Lilipelo, 58, was shot dead in June 2017, two days before he took office for a second stint as premier, and two months before he married his current wife Maesaiah.
Maesaiah Thabane, 42, has already been charged with arranging the hit squad but is currently out on bail. She has also denied involvement in the killing.

Murder-accused Lesotho PM Granted Medical Leave

Lesotho Prime Minister Thomas Thabane travelled to South Africa for “a routine medical check”, a day before he was set to appear in court on murder charges.
Thabane, who was due to be charged with the murder of his estranged wife this Friday, left the mountainous kingdom of Lesotho on Thursday. His personal secretary Thabo Thakalekoala told AFP:
<blockquote>He is not attending court, he has gone for a medical check-up in South Africa.</blockquote>
Thabane (80) announced earlier on Friday that he would quit office by the end of July due to old age.
He is accused of having hired hitmen to kill Lilopelo Thabane, 58, then his wife in June 2017. The murder occurred just two days before Thabane was sworn in as Prime Minister following an election.
Thabane’s current wife, Maesaiah Thabane, 42, has also been charged with the same murder of Lilopelo.
The PM married Maesaiah two months after Lipolelo’s death.

Lesotho Prime Minister Thomas Thabane To Be Charged With Murder

The South African police service has dismissed reports circulating in South Africa and Zimbabwe that Zimbabweans are among the 87 people arrested in connection with killing 9 illegal miners from Lesotho in Matholeville, Johannesburg, The Chronicle reports.
Speaking to the chronicle, SA Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said:
<blockquote>A few hours after nine people were murdered in Matholeville, Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela summoned police officers from different stations and units within the Johannesburg District and Provincial Office to hunt down the suspects and deal with all forms of criminality in Matholeville and the surrounding areas. Lesotho First Lady Charged With Murder

Nine illegal miners operating on disused mine shafts were killed by stoning in a deadly attack in the West Rand township of Matholeville, South Africa, on Friday afternoon.
Reports indicate that an angry group of illegal miners from Zimbabwe attacked their counterparts from Lesotho, leaving nine people dead on the streets.
The killings are believed to have emanated from the desire by the rival gangs to control the illegal mining in the area.
While community members claimed that the attackers were Zimbabwean nationals, Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said the assailants were Lesotho nationals. She said:
<blockquote>The bodies of the nine Lesotho nationals who are Zama zamas were found lying in the streets of Matholeville while the 10th person was seriously injured just after 3 pm. He was taken to a local hospital where he is being treated.
The suspects are now accusing the deceased of being involved in criminal activities which attract the police into their illegal mining operational space.</blockquote>
Some community members who spoke to the Sowetan said that Zimbabwean nationals attacked the Sotho guys because they were fed up with having their loot seized at gunpoint by the latter, who are considered lazy and do not want to work for themselves.

Lesotho’s Prime Minister Tom Thabane has announced his retirement from politics citing his old age. The announcement comes when police are still looking for his wife Maesiah over the murder of his former spouse, Lipolelo.
Opposition political parties and legislators from his own party, the All Basotho Convention (ABC), have been calling for his resignation arguing that he was obstructing justice in the murder case of Lipolelo.

The Prime Minister of Lesotho’s wife is going to be arrested after an arrest warrant was issued after she failed to turn up for questioning in a murder investigation. Mrs Thabane is wanted for questioning in the murder of her husband’s first wife.
Maesaiah Thabane, the current first lady, was summoned for questioning on Friday to “shed some light into the ongoing investigations into the June 2017 murder of Lipolelo Thabane who was gunned down near Maseru days before her husband’s inauguration.
Mrs Thabane could not be found when law enforcement officers visited her home which resulted in the arrest warrant being issued.
