Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo experienced food shortages last week which hospital insiders blamed on poor administration.
<a href="https://cite.org.zw/food-shortages-and-power-outages-plague-mpilo-hospital/">CITE</a> reported hospital sources as saying dairy products, vegetables, and meat for relish were all in short supply. Said a source:
<blockquote>
Bread is served every two days. The tea comes without sugar or milk; it’s just black tea.
Last week, there was one night where patients slept without supper – patients went without a meal for the whole night.
One day, lunch was served late. The isitshwala had no relish, so the hospital had to scramble to buy cabbage.
</blockquote>
When asked for a response by CITE, Mpilo Hospital Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Narcisius Dzvanga said “a logistical error” had contributed to food shortages, but those had been resolved. He said:
<blockquote>
It’s partly true. It was just a logistical error. We have the resources; it was just poor communication in the delivery system.
</blockquote>
The hospital also experienced a power outage that reportedly resulted in babies being delivered in the dark because diesel for the generators was not stocked.
However, Dr. Dzvanga said the hospital did have power backup for all the hospital’s critical departments. He said:

Critical areas like the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU) are always invariably covered, including the delivery section for babies.
There is no such thing in my basket here (about babies delivered in the dark). We have some generators, and it can’t be true that Mpilo can be in total darkness. That’s a lie.
</blockquote>
Dzvanga added that if such a situation occurred, he had not been briefed by staff. He said:
<blockquote>
They haven’t told me anything along those lines, and I am in the office.
</blockquote>
The CMO said the generators do not power plugs in parts of the hospital, which may cause some departments to go without electricity. He said:
<blockquote>
Overhead bulbs will be on, but plugs will be failing to pull the power. However, people will never walk in darkness in Mpilo. We have enough generators, but they don’t power plugs.

Hospital insiders also told CITE that the hospital could not even draw blood as there were no laboratory services but Dzvanga said Mpilo was “acting on” procuring medical supplies such as chemicals used for running tests.

Food Shortages And Power Outages Hit Mpilo Central Hospital

A state-of-the-art incinerator funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is currently under construction at Mpilo Central Hospital and is scheduled for completion in early 2024.
An incinerator is a facility designed to burn waste materials at very high temperatures until they are reduced to ash, gases, and heat.
<a href="https://cite.org.zw/mpilos-cutting-edge-incinerator-nears-completion/">CITE</a> reported Mpilo Chief Medical Officer, Dr Narcissus Dzvanga, as saying that the incinerator would not only benefit the hospital but also assist the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) in waste management. Said Dzvanga:

The incinerator is under construction, it’s going to be a game changer in waste management in the Southern region. It’s not meant to save the hospital but the city.
As you saw for yourself it’s a huge building and it’s going to come with two trucks for collecting liquid waste and other forms of waste.
I am sure we will be able to assist Bulawayo City Council (BCC) with waste management as well.
Everything is ready, they have started the recruitment of relevant staff, incinerator operator, electrical engineer, and mechanical engineer.
Once we have the full complement of the staff that is required then they are ready to bring the meta.
What they don’t want is to deliver then the thing is lying idle because we don’t have an incinerator operator, the engineer.
So they are saying once we have manpower ready, they deliver, they train and we are done.
For some of the ranks they are basics, drivers, general hands, we can recruit within.

Overreliance on donor funds to construct critical public health infrastructure could be an indication of misplaced priorities by the Zimbabwean Government.
In the 2024 ZWL$58.2 trillion budget, Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Mthuli Ncube allotted ZWL$6.3 trillion to the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
This represents a meagre 9.2 per cent, which is about 6 per cent shy of the Abuja Declaration agreed 15 per cent which Zimbabwe ratified.
Meanwhile, incineration can be controversial due to concerns about air pollution, potential health risks, and the impact on the environment.
However, modern incinerators are often equipped with air pollution control technologies to minimize emissions of pollutants such as particulate matter, heavy metals, and dioxins.
Furthermore, when properly designed, operated, and regulated, incinerators can provide a way to manage certain types of waste and reduce the volume of material going to landfills.
They can also be useful in recovering energy in the form of heat or electricity through waste-to-energy technologies.

Mpilo Central Hospital's Incinerator Nears Completion

Doctors at Mpilo Central Hospital on Wednesday removed a tumour weighing 30kg from the belly of a 39-year-old mother of seven, Portia Gowero.
The growth, which Gowero lived with for two years, accounted for two-thirds of her actual weight by the time it was finally removed.
A team of 10 medical practitioners led by renowned gynaecologist Professor Solwayo Ngwenya successfully removed the tumour from Gowero’s belly during a two-hour-long surgery at Mpilo Hospital on Wednesday.
The tumour had been growing inside her belly since February 2021.
Speaking to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/30kg-tumour-removed-from-woman-at-mpilo/">Chronicle</a>, Mpilo Central Hospital chief medical officer Dr Narcisius Dzvanga confirmed that the tumour weighed 30kg. Said Dzvanga:

We have a female from Mutare who was struggling with a growth in her tummy. This was operated on Wednesday and a 30kg mass was removed from her tummy.
It was quite a big operation and went on very well. It was remarkable work done by our staff members led by Professor Solwayo Ngwenya himself and I would like to congratulate my staff for doing such a successful operation despite the complications.

Gowero, who is stable and recovering at Mpilo, said when the tumour started developing she never took it seriously as she suspected that she was carrying her eighth child. She said:
<blockquote>
I was breastfeeding my seventh child in February 2021 when I noticed that my tummy was growing.
I had to wean her thinking it was another pregnancy only to be told two months later that there was no baby.
I would feel a heavy weight on my tummy and this thing continued to grow until it affected my breathing.
At first, I went to Mutare Hospital with the hope that they would help me but sadly I did not get help and the tumour kept growing daily.
I was transferred to Parirenyatwa in Harare with no luck until I resolved to seek spiritual help from prophets who saw me sell every valuable possession including 15 goats, two cows, a solar system and household property just to get answers.
</blockquote>
Gowero said she decided to visit her sisters who stay in Bulawayo after some of her relatives in Mutare started treating her as an outcast. She said:
<blockquote>
I live off peasant farming and I was struggling to work in the fields which also affected me.
I was always in distress and carried this tumour for two years and five months.
I lost a lot of property trying to find answers until I decided to visit my siblings who stay in Bulawayo as I was being ill-treated.
My sisters then brought me to Mpilo and I was lucky that on April 1 I found Professor Ngwenya doing rounds and it was decided that I be admitted and monitored to diagnose the problem.
When they decided I had to be operated they highlighted that I need a blood transfusion and we struggled to get three pints as my blood group is not easily accessible.
</blockquote>
Gowero added that after weeks of getting medical attention and sessions of blood transfusion, doctors said she was ready for an operation.
Mpilo public relations officer Sister Norma Mabhena said the Gowero first came to the hospital, she was weighing a total of 75kg and was struggling to walk, eat and breathe properly.
She thanked the Government whose initiatives ensured that Gowero had access to blood for free. Added Sr Mabhena:

We had two surgeons including Professor Ngwenya who was the team leader, two anaesthetists, six nurses, and several healthcare workers in and outside the theatre working flat out during the two-hour-long major operation.
I think we last had this kind of surgery years ago when a team of our staff members operated on a woman who had a cyst weighing 25kg.
</blockquote>
Sr Mabhena said Gowero bled a lot during surgery and so far the cause of the tumour hasn’t been established.
Meanwhile, in 2008, another woman had a 25kg big cyst removed from her womb at Mpilo Central Hospital.
The team which operated on the woman was also led by Professor Ngwenya then.

Doctors at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo have successfully removed a tumour weighing about 30kgs from a 39-year-old old woman’s belly.
Portia Gowero told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/30kg-tumour-removed-from-woman-at-mpilo/">Chronicle</a> that she had lived with the growth for two years and spent all her possessions trying to find a cure for the tumour.
Gowero, a mother of seven, had been to Mutare Provincial Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals seeking medical attention but could not be cured.
She underwent a two-hour-long surgery to remove the tumour at Mpilo on Wednesday.
A team of 10 medical practitioners managed to remove the tumour which has been growing since February 2021.
Gowero said when the tumour started developing, she never took it seriously as she suspected that she was carrying her eighth child.
The <a href="https://www.cancer.org.au/cancer-information/types-of-cancer/stomach-cancer">Cancer Council</a> says tumours can begin anywhere in the stomach but most begin in the glandular tissue on the stomach’s inner surface.
Below are some of the stomach cancer signs and symptoms:

<li>a painful or burning sensation in the abdomen</li>
<li>heartburn or indigestion (dyspepsia)</li>
<li>a sense of fullness, even after a small meal</li>
<li>nausea and/or vomiting</li>

<li>unexplained tiredness or weakness</li>
<li>blood in vomit</li>
<li>black-coloured faeces</li>

Doctors At Mpilo Hospital Remove 30kg Tumour From Woman (39)

Mpilo Central Hospital has been affected by the current water shortages in Bulawayo and this is forcing relatives of patients admitted at the hospital to bring water in containers.
Members of staff who spoke to <a href="https://cite.org.zw/byos-water-shortages-affect-mpilo-hospital/">CITE</a> on condition of anonymity said the hospital has been experiencing water challenges for the past two weeks. Said a staff member:
<blockquote>
The hospital did not have running water for the past two weeks. There is no water in the maternity ward.
They had said they would call the council, but we are not sure if they have called yet. Some wards now have water, but the pressure is very low.
</blockquote>
Chief Medical Officer for Mpilo Central Hospital Dr. Narcisius Dzvanga told CITE that the hospital depends on the Bulawayo City Council for water and when surrounding suburbs are cut off, they are also affected. He said:
<blockquote>
Mpilo does not have an independent BCC water supply. We are connected with other places, so we are equally affected.
We do have four functional boreholes unfortunately they are not directly connected to the hospital side.
This is because BCC refused to allow us to feed water into them from their systems.
We also have multiple jojo tanks that are strategically positioned around the hospital close to the wards.
We recently got assistance to draw water from them to the higher floors. The only challenge with them is that they fill up either through the bowsers or running water. If we get neither, then they will be empty.
</blockquote>
Dr. Dzvanga, however, said the City of Bulawayo has been very consistent in dispatching a bowser whenever there is prolonged water rationing.

Bulawayo Water Crisis Affect Mpilo Central Hospital

Doctors at government hospitals such as Bulawayo’s Mpilo Central Hospital are demanding bribes of up to US$700 to conduct surgeries on patients, a Member of Parliament has claimed.
Speaking in the National Assembly on Thursday while raising a matter of national interest, Makokoba MP James Sithole said bribe-taking by doctors in public health institutions is a sign of decay in the delivery systems. He said:
<blockquote>
I will give an example of what is happening at Mpilo Central Hospital.
I am referring to corrupt activities, which are unnecessarily exposing patients that are already suffering to more suffering and to premature death.
There are patients that have been in the queue to go to the theatre since December 31, 2021, and they have not been able to have the opportunity to go to the theatre.
The reason is that each time their allocated dates arrive to go to the theatre, excuses are given.
They are told that there are no doctors to attend to them; they are told that there are no necessary materials in the theatre; they are told that their temperature is too high for them to go to the theatre.
However, the truth is that it is because they would have not paid a bribe to doctors that range between (US)$300 to (US$) 700 or more.
Surprisingly, doctors are able to carry out procedures using the same theatres on their private patients without paying anything to the hospital.
</blockquote>
Sithole said that the X-ray machine and the scanner are said to be broken down most of the time adding that this is a pretext for sending patients to private facilities run by the same doctors. He said:
<blockquote>
So, if ever anyone is lucky at that time to be attended to, when they get to the other end where the doctor is looking at the X-ray picture, the patient is told the X-ray is not clear because the X-ray machine is faulty.
So they are referred to facilities outside or private operators where they have to do another X-ray.
On the scanning machine, pregnant mothers who have to do a scan are told that there is no jelly but surprisingly, again, the officer operating the scan will be having their private jelly.
They only attend to their private patients from their private practice, but who come and use the hospital scan with the jelly.
Anyone referred by Mpilo is told that there is no jelly, yet those coming from outside who will be their private patients will be attended to.
</blockquote>
Sithole concluded by requesting that the Ministry of Health and Child Care carry out an investigation and bring a ministerial statement to the National Assembly.
National Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda said Sithole had raised “a fundamental and profound observation.”

"Government Doctors Demanding Bribes From Patients"

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has received approval from authorities to increase its enrolment for its medical and health sciences school from the current 25 to 60 per intake.
The Medical School, housed at Mpilo Central Hospital, was introduced in 2012 and has since produced four sets of graduates.
NUST School of Medicine Executive Dean, Professor Elopy Sibanda confirmed the development to the <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/nust-to-increase-school-of-medicine-intake/">Sunday News</a> on Tuesday. He said:
<blockquote>
We have been allowed to increase our enrolment to 60. For the first couple of years, we were being monitored where our quality was being assured.
The authorities were satisfied that we produce quality graduates and now they can allow us to increase our number.
The increase in the number is still a small dot, we could have been able to increase more but we do not have premises at the moment as our campus is yet to be constructed.
The level of demand is very high and the candidates are very highly qualified and therefore I think if we could expand the services we would be able to offer more.
There is a World Health Organisation-recommended patient-to-doctor ratio which we can achieve if we are able to train more people.
We have Ekusileni Hospital which is meant to be a queenary hospital that is earmarked to do specialist services.
As such we need to train these specialists so that patients do not go out of the country.

NUST To Increase Medical And Health Sciences School Intake

More than $4 billion worth of drugs and other medical accessories could not be accounted for at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mpilo_Central_Hospital">Mpilo Central Hospital</a>, according to Auditor-General Mrs <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mildred_Chiri">Mildred Chiri.</a>
Her report stated that Mpilo management failed to show an inventory of what was received versus what was disbursed for use at the region’s referral hospital. 
The 2021 report on State Owned Enterprises and Parastatals recommended that management should take action to strengthen controls around the inventory, according to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/mpilo-fails-to-account-for-over-4bn-drugs-ag/">Sunday News</a>.
The AG said Mpilo Central Hospital failed to present itself in an acceptable manner in regards to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs) and the requirements of the Health Service Act.
The AG noted that the major variation was in drugs and medical supplies that were expected to be in the hospital’s inventory but the institution could not account for when the audit was carried out. She noted:

There were discrepancies between the physical quantity of inventory (stocks) counted and the records of inventory. Quantities that were confirmed were less than what was in the records leaving a variance of inventory worth $3.4 billion which management had not investigated to determine the reasons for the discrepancies.
</blockquote>
<h2>How did it happen:</h2>
<blockquote>
a). The AG noted that this was mainly because of Mpilo’s failure to use vouchers to distribute stocks as and when they were requested by the departments.
b). The hospital’s stores department also did not make use of issue vouchers during the year when consumables were being requested by user departments. As a result, the stores’ department and accounts departments were not reconciling issues and receipts between these two departments. Chiri could not verify the completeness of consumables expenses amounting to $7 765 351.
</blockquote>
<h2>Drugs Unaccounted for:</h2>
Mpilo was found in possession of a stock of 100 units of medium-sized latex gloves instead of 27 917 boxes which mean 27 817 units worth $633 678 826 worth of latex gloves couldn’t be unaccounted for.
There were 1529 units of the 25mg drug in stock instead of 4677 which means 3148 units worth $47 795 911 were missing. 
The report also noted that over $1 billion worth of nifedipine (a common drug used to treat (Hypertension) high blood pressure and heart-related chest pain) is unaccounted for. 
The hospital had a stock count of 250 of fentanyl (a chronic pain relief drug) instead of 3 400 which means 3 150 worth over $550 million were missing. 
Mpilo had stock 3 492 of Indomethacin when the report was compiled instead of 24 040 leaving a variance of 20 548 units worth over $582 million. 
<h2>Why is it important: </h2>
Zimbabwe’s public health institutions have a huge deficit in drugs and medical accessories forcing some patients to seek medical assistance in neighbouring South Africa.
 There are reports that some health officials are stealing drugs and medical accessories for resale on streets or in their private pharmacies leaving the common man vulnerable.

Mpilo Fails To Account For $4 Billion Worth Of Drugs, Other Medical Accessories - Auditor-General

Renowned Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Professor_Solwayo_Ngwenya">Professor Solwayo Ngwenya</a> (51), a proud polygamist and traditionalist, has said polygamy is no child’s play as it requires lots of resources.
Currently married to three wives who stay with him under one roof, he says polygamy is at the heart of his cultural identity and vows to keep alive the Ngwenya clan even for 100 more years to come. He told <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/prof-solwayo-ngwenya-opens-up-on-polygamy/">The Chronicle</a>:

I come from a deep conservative family. I’m a descendant of the Zwide Kalanga family, which came here with <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mzilikazi">King Mzilikazi</a> with my grandfather as his chief advisor.
Riches and big families have been a part of us since then and there was no way I could rid myself of this rich culture because of education.

Prof Ngwenya, who is also <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mpilo_Central_Hospital">Mpilo Hospital</a> CEO, said he respects women for their household and motherhood duties adding that he would rather have them stay at home and build the clan while he works “so hard to provide for all their needs.” 
He said he treats all his wives equally adding, “No one gets any favours, money or presents from me secretly at home. We declare everything so that our marriage survives. I think serious men should only go for polygamy once they understand its role in our culture.” He added:
<blockquote>
They should also desist from having mistresses, it’s against our culture, its either one is in a monogamous relationship or polygamous relationship.
</blockquote>
His eldest wife Princess Mnkandla said indeed theirs was a sisterhood as they never felt they were in competition although they share one man.
MaMnkandla the wives had duties to host Ngwenya and the duty roaster is maintained adding that Ngwenya doesn’t have a specific bedroom as he has to be in one of the rooms and “there is never a day where he sleeps alone.”

"Polygamy Is No Child’s Play Honestly" - Polygamist Professor Solwayo Ngwenya

Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo was without running water for three days due to a burst pipe, forcing the institution to get water from boreholes.
Mpilo Central Hospital is one of Zimbabwe’s major health referral centres, catering mainly for patients in Bulawayo, parts of Midlands, Masvingo, Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South provinces.
CITE reported sources as saying water supplies were cut off to most sections of the hospital on Wednesday and were only restored on Friday after the City of Bulawayo attended to the burst pipe. Said a source:
<blockquote>
There was a burst pipe at the Outpatients Department and at the kitchen. The city council only attended to it today and they subsequently reconnected our water.
The whole hospital was affected by the water cut but now the situation has normalised.
We were getting water from the laundry department and from the boiler. We were also getting relief from the boreholes at the hospital.
There are several taps connected to the borehole so those were our alternative sources of water.

Mpilo Public Relations Officer, Sanelisiwe Nyamambi confirmed the development adding that water supplies have since been restored.

Mpilo Central Hospital Goes 3 Days Without Water

Scores of doctors and nurses are reported to be leaving Bulawayo hospitals and other health institutions citing poor salaries.
Chronicle reports that over 140 health caregivers have resigned from Bulawayo’s central hospitals, a development that has compromised service delivery.
The publication further reports that most of these healthcare workers are said to be leaving for the UK which recently embarked on massive recruitment in the face of Covid-19.
A total of 52 registered general nurses and two doctors resigned at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) this year while Mpilo Central Hospital lost 77 nurses and seven doctors, a development which authorities say has crippled operations.
Commenting on doctors and nurses leaving Bulawayo hospitals, Health Services Board chairperson Dr Paulinus Sikosana said it was unfortunate that the resignations are coming at a time when the Government has stepped up efforts to improve working conditions and remuneration for health workers. He said:
<blockquote>_The Cost of Living was adjusted by 25 percent effected in April 2021 and an additional 45 percent to be reviewed in June, was noted during the Health Workers in the Health Service Bipartite Negotiating Panel (HSBNP).
_Negotiations are expected to start soon on Health Sector-Specific Allowances as soon as Health Workers reconstitute the Apex Panel, whose term of office expired on 30 April 2021_

Doctors, Nurses Leaving Bulawayo Hospitals

An unidentified man is battling for life at Mpilo Hospital after he was electrocuted while trying to steal power cables belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA).
Bulawayo acting chief fire officer Mr Linos Phiri said they were informed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) at about 8 am about a man who had been electrocuted while attempting to steal Zesa copper cables.
<blockquote>I can confirm that an unidentified man who is likely to be aged around 25 years had been electrocuted. When the ambulance arrived, the man was unconscious and he was taken to Mpilo Hospital where he is under police guard.
More information is yet to be availed about the man.</blockquote>
The Sunday News reports that residents who saw the electrocuted man circulated the images on WhatsApp and also alerted Zesa officials as well as the police.
The publication further says the man’s T-shirt had been burnt, his upper body was also burnt and his head had sustained scars.
There was also a pair of pliers which the man was probably using to cut the cables.
This comes as a Glenview resident who was part of a hand that tried to steal cables in Zvishavane was arrested last week while others are still on the run.
ZESA attributes some of the power cuts to damages to its properties including cables and generators.

Unidentified Man Electrocuted While Stealing ZESA Cables

United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) and Mpilo Central Hospital have become “death traps” after nurses deserted the two institutions for fear of coronavirus, among other factors.
Reports indicate that UBH has been deserted by the entire nursing staff except for supervisors and four registered nurses (RGNs) seconded by the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services.
UBH chief executive officer, Narcissus Dzvanga on Sunday told Southern Eye that they were expecting a few more nurses from the Zimbabwe National Army. He said:
<blockquote>Yes. That’s true [that the hospital is operating with a skeletal staff]. It’s multifactorial ranging from the industrial work withdrawal, quarantine, flexi-working hours, transport issues, fear of the COVID outbreak and the rise in the Bulawayo statistics.
This is very, very sad and unprecedented. We got just four RGNs from Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services and expecting a few from the Zimbabwe National Army as well.</blockquote>
Dzvanga appealed to Red Cross and St Johns and other nursing agencies to send volunteers to help with menial duties.
He revealed that the hospital does not have sufficient personal protective equipment, and they are now going to discharge all the stable patients and attend to emergencies only.

Officials Turn To Prisons, Army After Nurses Desert UBH And Mpilo Hospitals

Nurses at the government-run Mpilo Central Hospital held a demonstration at the institution on Monday morning.
The nurses were protesting against hospital Chief Executive Officer Mr Mabandi who is reportedly making the nurses work 4 days of 12-hour shifts.
Meanwhile, the nurses are waiting for the outcome of negotiations between the government and the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA). The nurses want to work for two days.
Another grievance raised by the protesting nurses has to do wit the misuse of the hospital’s ambulances.
They were complaining that matrons use the hospital ambulance to go for worship while the hospital cannot take care of its patients.
Some nurses were saying that they are forced to come to work but there is no medication for patients. An unnamed nurse said there is only one thermometer in the whole hospital.

Nurses Stage Demo At Mpilo General Hospital

Medical institutions in Zimbabwe are almost deserted as doctors and nurses have embarked on industrial action to compel the government to the table over salaries which they say have been eroded by the soaring inflation.
The strike intensified when the acting president of Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association, Dr Peter Magombeyi reportedly went missing on Saturday 14 September in Budiriro.
Magombeyi was found on the 19th of September in Nyabira, near Inyathi Barracks, about 35 kilometres from Harare.
Despite his return, doctors have vowed to continue with the strike saying that they are incapacitated to execute their duties and responsibilities.
It is during this juncture that the son of Lovemore Sambiri, a self-employed garden designer, who was run over by a car was hospitalised at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
Sambiri told New Zimbabwe that there were no medicines and when he bought some of the required medicines from pharmacies, there was no one to administer them onto his son. He narrated:
<blockquote>He has only gone through the x-ray and up to today, nothing has been done on him because doctors are on strike.
I was advised by nurses to seek assistance from private doctors but private doctors want US$75. This is against my earnings of about $300 per month. I cannot afford US$75 the private doctors want.
It is almost two weeks in hospital but without any help. His leg is now getting bad and may have to be amputated. His head has stitches already.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Mpilo hospital has said that it had to <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/22/mpilo-hospital-we-engaged-personnel-from-zimbabwe-national-army-to-save-the-situation/">engage personnel from the Zimbabwe National Army to save the situation.</a>

A Bulawayo woman, Mrs Simiso Nyamazana is appealing for assistance from well-wishers who can help her raise US$13 000 for her son’s emergency heart surgery in India.
Speaking to The Chronicle, Nyamazana from Emakhandeni suburb said that her son Thamsanqa Mudimba was born with a congenital heart disease and it is worsening. She also said:

Bulawayo Family Seeking Financial Assistance Towards Son's Surgery

Over 300 patients who require surgery risk developing life threatening complications following breakdown of anaesthetic machines at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo.
Mpilo Central Hospital is now being forced to put patients requiring surgery on a waiting list. The Chronicle reports the hospital is operating with only four anaesthetic machines out of 10. An anaesthetic or anaesthesia machine is a gas medical equipment used for inhalation anesthesia, including flowmeters, vaporizers, and sources of compressed gases, but not including the anesthetic circuit or mechanisms for elimination of carbon dioxide.
An anaesthetic or anaesthesia machine is a gas medical device used to generate and mix a fresh gas flow of medical gases and inhalational anaesthetic agents for purposes of inducing and maintaining anaesthesia.
In an interview with the Chronicle, Mpilo clinical director, Dr Solwayo Ngwenya said the hospital was in dire need of the machines in order to carry out operations in time. Said Ngwenya:
<blockquote>We need anaesthetic machines, there are only four. The other three broke down and we cannot get spare parts because they need forex and these are specialised machines. So, people coming here that require surgery in our out-patients department are being told to wait. There is a long waiting list so the figures are piling up and people are being told to wait three months to six months and some to next year, for operations.</blockquote>
He said there were about 300 people awaiting surgery.

Over 300 Mpilo Hospital Patients At Risk As Anaesthetic Machines Breakdown

Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo has refuted claims on social media that it has run out of essential medicines and basic sundries. The Hospital said that it does not own a Twitter account. Mpilo Central Hospital clinical director Dr Solwayo Ngwenya had this to say:
<blockquote>The hospital does not have an official Twitter account. I checked with our public relations department when I saw that page. It’s a fake account.
… There are 500 patients in the hospital, there are people who are being discharged and 33 babies were born yesterday, if we are having challenges how then are we managing to treat these people? There are major things that the nation is facing, people are experiencing challenges and we cannot pin our challenges to the government as we are managing at the moment.</blockquote>
Junior doctors at major public hospitals embarked on a 40-day long strike across December and January citing poor working conditions. The striking doctors grudgingly called off the strike after they were allegedly threatened with failure in their internship.

Zanu-PF Footing Mnangagwa Rally Explosion Victims' Medical Bills

In an interview with The Chronicle, Mpilo Central Hospital clinical director, Dr Solwayo Ngwenya said out of the 29 casualties they received, four of them were in a critical condition.
Dr Ngwenya said of the four people who underwent emergency surgery on Saturday night, three of them were critical and were in the Intensive Care Unit.(ICU). Said Dr Ngwenya:
<blockquote>We received a total of 29 victims of the White City incident of which 16 were admitted to the hospital and some of them were very critical and they still remain critical. One person had to undergo an extensive surgery and it took us several hours to save his life. The others are recuperating in the general wards and there is still a lot of work to be done, some of them sustained serious injuries on their limbs and they will require surgical operations. I would like to wish the victims a speedy recovery and we will continue to do our best.</blockquote>

Mpilo Central Hospital Gives Update On Mnangagwa Rally Explosion Victims

Cancer patients in the southern part of the country will be relieved to hear that the radiotherapy machine at Mpilo Central  Hospital is finally ready to use. The patients had to travel to Harare for treatment before. The machine was acquired 5 years ago at a cost of millions of dollars but has been lying idle ever since because the management was unable to get an operating licence from the Radiation Authority of Zimbabwe.  The previous management has been accused of misappropriating funds which were meant for the installation of the Radiotherapy machine.
The machine is set to be commissioned on the 22nd of March (tomorrow).

Mpilo cancer machine to start working 5 years after being acquired

A woman from Magwegwe North Suburb in Bulawayo allegedly chopped off her two year old son’s private parts claiming they were too big for his age. The boy has been admitted at Mpilo Central Hospital for the past two months. The woman is a psychiatric patient.
A family member who spoke to The Chronicle said that the woman has since been taken to Ingutsheni Central Hospital. When asked by The Chronicle Mpilo acting clinical director Dr Xolani Ndlovu could neither deny nor confirm the incident however a nurse who spoke to the paper on condition of anonymity said that the child had suffered a traumatic amputation.
