The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) says it is planning a food relief programme targeting 700 000 people in Zimbabwe.
The country’s food deficit has been exacerbated by a poor harvest and the Ukraine war.
WFP country representative Francesca Edelmann on Tuesday told Reuters that Zimbabwe’s government is working with agencies to provide food aid for 3.8 million people.
WFP has budgeted US$40 million for the food aid programme to cushion millions over the peak of the hunger season. Said Edelmann:

I do not think this is a famine as yet, but that does not mean that it is good. We are preparing for a response that will take off in October up to March.
We are working with government on a joint plan for the food deficit mitigation programme and that is for 3.8 million people.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe requires 2.2 million tonnes of maize annually for human and livestock consumption.
However, the govenment has said it expects 1.56 million tonnes from the 2021-2022 growing season due to poor rainfall.
Edelmann said the number of food insecure people had risen from 2.9 million to 3.8 million.

WFP Plans Food Relief For 700 000 People In Zimbabwe

The government of Japan has donated another US$500 000 to the World Food Programme (WFP) towards the provision of food aid to Zimbabweans.
In a statement on Tuesday, Japan’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Satoshi Tanaka, said:
<blockquote>
In collaboration with WFP, the people of Japan continue to support the most vulnerable in Zimbabwe to address their immediate food needs during the lean season.
</blockquote>
WFP’s representative and country director, Francesca Edelmann, welcomed the donation saying it has come at the right time. Said, Edelmann:
<blockquote>
Not only has poor rainfall during the recent growing season resulted in widespread crop failure, but prices of food, fuel, and fertiliser have also surged due to the conflict in Ukraine.
Families are now being forced to sell off livestock and other precious belongings to be able to buy food.
</blockquote>
Since 2019, Japan has contributed over US$24.6 million to WFP-supported food assistance and resilience-building for vulnerable communities in Zimbabwe.
The Asian country, which is the third-largest economy in the world, has also provided nutrition support for pregnant women in maternity waiting homes.
In 2021, Japan contributed US$5.75 million through the WFP to support vulnerable, food insecure communities in Zimbabwe.

Japan Releases More Funds For Food Aid In Zimbabwe

World Food Programme (WFP) country director Eddie Rowe has revealed that up to 1.1 million people in the rural areas face hunger at the peak of the coming lean season. The lean season is from October to March. Speaking in Zvishavane, Rowe said:
<blockquote>The recent ZimVac [Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee] report on rural livelihoods still estimates that up to 1,1 million people will face food insecurity in the coming months. We know that now is the time to devote all our efforts to enhancing the abilities of communities and households to recover and build resilience for future shocks.</blockquote>
At the same event, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Huang Ping said his country has donated another $5m to be used during the lean period. Huang said
<blockquote>In 2016, China provide $1m for lean season assistance and productive asset creation, for which we are holding the handover now.
And today, I have more good news to share with you. Just several days ago, the Chinese government decided to donate $5m to Zimbabwe through WFP in 2017 which will be spent in the 2017-2018 lean season on assistance and support to refugees, benefitting approximately 107 000 people.</blockquote>
