Five Form 2 students from Chrome High School in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Shurugwi/">Shurugwi</a> have been granted bail until Monday after being accused of stealing 16 laptops donated to Selukwe Primary School by the First Lady, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Auxilia_Mnangagwa/">Auxilia Mnangagwa</a>. They are also alleged to have broken into a school tuck shop and taken various items. The stolen goods and laptops are estimated to be worth US$8,000, with around US$5,000 worth of property recovered.
The accused appeared before Shurugwi Magistrate Sithabile Zungula. Their identities have not been disclosed due to their ages.
<h3>What Transpired:</h3>
The prosecution, represented by Tafadzwa Guzete, presented the case alleging the accused students collaborated and planned to steal from Selukwe Primary School on August 16, 2023.
They gained entry to the school’s tuck shop using unknown objects and stole groceries such as biscuits, snacks, soft drinks, toffee bars, Maheu bottles, sweets, and juice.
They also took basketballs, volleyballs, tennis balls, hockey balls, soccer balls, hockey sticks, and netballs. Later, they allegedly entered the school laboratory through the ceiling and stole 16 laptops.
The matter came to light on September 19, 2023, when one of the accused’s guardians found laptop components in his possession. After questioning, the son admitted to the theft, leading to the involvement of the police, who arrested all the suspects.

Students Steal Laptops Donated By First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said he does not care if some election observers say the 23 August general elections lack credibility.
This comes after opposition political parties and some civic groups have alleged intimidation, violence, unfair court rulings on sensitive political matters, and the banning of opposition rallies, among other issues.
Addressing thousands of people who were bussed to a ZANU PF rally in Shurugwi on Saturday, Mnangagwa said no one had the right to ask if the elections were free and fair, adding that no country can teach Zimbabwe about democracy. He said:

No one should come and tell us, “Are your elections free, fair and transparent?’ Nonsense!”
… I want to make this clear; no one is qualified to teach us democracy. We were never given our democracy on a silver platter, we spent 16 solid years of an armed struggle for us to become independent.
No one should assume any role to teach us democracy, we fought for it. We acquired it ourselves.
It’s us who have the right to talk about democracy because we fought for it; we have the right to talk about independence because we fought for it, and about sovereignty because we fought for it.
This was our main goal, many of our brothers and sisters perished for it.
It is we who want free and fair elections, we are not doing this to please anybody, and we want it ourselves.

The Government invited observers from the United States and the European Union, but Western powers in the past said Zimbabwe’s elections were neither free nor fair.
Last week, a government-controlled daily paper wrote a story alleging that European Union election observers had bribed journalists in the Midlands province.
But in a statement, European Union Election Observer Mission (EU EOM) Chief Observer Fabio Massimo Castaldo said the report was “defamatory” as the allegations were “unfounded”.

No One Can Teach Zimbabwe About Democracy - Mnangagwa

A 24-year-old <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Shurugwi">Shurugwi</a> woman was robbed of valuables worth US$200 before she was stripped naked and pushed out of a speeding car by robbers in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gweru">Gweru.</a>
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident which occurred on 26 March around 9 PM at Claybank Traffic Circle. He said:

The police are investigating a robbery case in which a 24-year-old woman from Shurugwi was robbed of cash and property worth US$200. The incident occurred on March 26 around 9 PM near Clay bank roundabout in Gweru.

Insp Mahoko said the woman boarded a white Honda fit at the Cathedral bus stop in Gweru intending to go to Shurugwi. 
He said there were four male occupants including the driver, according to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/naked-woman-thrown-out-of-speeding-honda-fit-after-robbery/">Chronicle</a>.
Upon reaching Clay bank roundabout, Gweru, two male adult passengers jumped from the boot and sat in the back seat beside the woman.
The robbers allegedly hit the woman on the forehead with an iron bar and robbed her of her Itel P38 cell phone, a bag containing various clothes, and cash US$80 and stripped her naked before pushing her out of the speeding car. 
She then walked to Gweru Provincial Hospital where she was assisted with clothes. A report was made at ZRP Gweru Central and the scene was attended. 
Mahoko said no arrests were made and nothing was recovered from the stolen goods.
He appealed to members of the public who might have information leading to the arrest of the four suspects to approach any nearest police station with the information.
Mahoko also urged the public to board public service vehicles as they appear to be safer than Mushikashika vehicles.

Woman Robbed, Stripped Naked, Pushed Out Of Speeding Car

The ZANU PF candidate for Pumula, Bulawayo, in the 2018 elections, Khumbulani Mpofu, and his gang allegedly robbed a mine in Shurugwi last week and were later arrested by the police.
Mpofu was reportedly issued with a ZANU PF White Ford Ranger double cab vehicle in 2017 which he used in a midnight armed robbery on 22 December at Ansh Red Mine in Shurugwi, <a href="https://twitter.com/NewsHawksLive/status/1607317300428046338">reported The NewsHawks</a>.
A police report obtained by CITE in Bulawayo, shared with The NewsHawks reveals that the seven robbers stole 400kg of gold-loaded carbons at gunpoint. Reads the report:

The seven accused persons who were armed with an identified pistol, an axe an electric shocker and also an unidentified rifle ordered the two complainants to lie down before tying them with a rope.
Some of the accused persons proceeded to the caborn room where they force opened the door and loaded about 400kgs of pregnant caborns into sacks, while some were left guarding the complainants.
One of the accused persons among those who were guarding the complainants searched and took US$250 from complainant number three while the others took four cellphones which were being charged.
The accused persons then left the scene leaving the complainants tied with the rope. One of the complainants managed to untie himself and proceeded to untie the other.
They then phoned complainant number one (Anderson Muchenje) who is the owner of the mine and the case was reported to the Shurugwi police station.
Scene was attended by DUB and CID details, but nothing was recovered.

The seven suspects are Delta Misheck (32), Khumbulani Mpofu (42), Promise Dube (22), Moyo Phakhamani (30), Canicious Sibanda (28), Khumalo Mlamuli (31) and Munetsi Takunda (29).
About 24 hours after the robbery, police got a tip-off and moved for Mpofu, a University of KwaZulu-Natal graduate and ZANU PF activist, before pouncing on the robbers at a tollgate.
Police shot the robbers’ getaway car’s tyres and punctured them before the robbers tried to escape on foot. Reads the police report:

On 24 December 2022 at around 1800hours CID MFFU Shurugwi details received a tip-off to the effect that the accused were in possession of 400 kilogrammes of loaded carbon and looking for an unmonitored elution plant for gold processing.
A swift reaction comprised of CID MFFU Shurugwi and Support Unit details were mandated to action the information received.

… At around 1830 hours, the accused persons arrived at [Flamingo Tollgate 10km along the Gweru to Masvingo Road] driving a white Ford Ranger registration number AEX 3081, engine number not yet identified, chassis number AFAPXXMJ2PJU06936 driven by accused number two Khumbulani Mpofu aged 42… of Cowdry Park Bulawayo and he is unemployed. The vehicle had a VVIP sticker on the screen.
Whilst the aforementioned vehicle was in the queue towards paypoint, detectives approached the vehicle, and identified themselves by producing police identity cards to the driver and occupants.
Detectives then ordered the driver to switch off the vehicle and remain stationary at that point. The driver did not comply instead he, closed the windows and locked the doors, attempted to reverse and move out of the queue.
The attempt failed as the vehicle was blocked by other vehicles in the queue. Support unit details closed in and surrounded the vehicle… Cst Maduche who was armed with an AK rifle… deflated the right tyre by firing one shot whilst… L/Sgt Matonhodze G who was armed with AK rifle… deflated the left tyre by firing one shot.
On realising that the escape with the vehicle was not possible, the driver brought the vehicle to an emergency halt, opened the door attempting to escape and was apprehended across the road by D/Sgt Chaumbezvo after a struggle that resulted in the police detail sustaining a loss of tooth on the lower jaw.

ZANU PF Parliamentary Candidate Arrested For Armed Robbery

Villagers from Ward 19 in Shurugwi are opposed to a plan by a mining company, Unki, to construct a 50MW solar power station on a 138h piece of land in the area.
The community accuses Unki of exploiting resources in the area while leaving nothing for them and making false promises since 1998.
This came out on 7 December 2022 when Christal Consultant visited Chironde Business Centre to do an Environmental Impact Assessment and engage the community.
The villagers stated that part of the area from Mbada Camp to Tailings Dam covering 238 hectares earmarked for a solar power plant by Unki is their grazing area. However, Unki claims it is within their mine lease area.
Residents told Tasara Marongedze of Christal Consultant that the mine in 1998 promised to concentrate its activities underground but a lot of activities are happening on the surface.
They also claimed that Unki destroyed a community dip tank but never built another one as promised.
Unki is also accused of reneging on its promise to employ significant numbers of locals at the mine as only five have since been employed.
The community said food aid pledged by the mine had never been delivered.
They also alleged that there was a child involved in an accident and the family had not been compensated, saying the company was to blame.
Marongedze, however, told the gathering that he was only there to listen to the people’s views on the project as he was not an Unki employee. He said:

I am here to tell you about the 30 to 50MW project which is to be constructed by 2024 and that 138h of land is needed for it.
I am not here to tell you to accept or reject the project but to hear your views.

Makwikwi Co-operative chairman, Dickson Manyumbu, whose members are affected by the project said:

We are not fighting against development but it must be noted that we are not benefiting anything from this mine that is not only milking our resources but disrupting our way of life and bringing a lot of inconveniences to us. The mine should deliver on its promises.

Villagers Reject Unki 50MW Solar Project

A Shurugwi man is battling for his life at a local hospital after he was stabbed in the stomach for “suspiciously” parking his vehicle near the assailant’s homestead.
Clyde Masembu (26) was left for dead following a knife stab in the stomach, NewZimbabwe.com reported quoting Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko. The Inspector said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a case of attempted murder where a 26-year-old man of Marishongwe village, Chief Ndanga in Shurugwi was left for dead after he was stabbed using a knife in the stomach, leaving intestines protruding for allegedly suspiciously parking his motor vehicle near a homestead.

What happened:
Mahoko said the incident occurred last Friday night along the Shurugwi–Mhandamabwe Road.
It is alleged that Masembu was in the company of his girlfriend when he parked his motor vehicle at a lay-by along Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe road.
The suspect, Shepherd Phiri aged 40 of Mashoko Village under Chief Ndanga in Shurugwi, approached them asking why they had parked near his homestead.
Masembu disembarked from the vehicle in a bid to explain to Phiri and he was stabbed with a knife in the abdomen resulting in intestines protruding.
A police report was made at Donga Police Station leading to Phiri’s arrest while Masembu was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where he is in serious condition.

Man Hospitalised After Being Stabbed For "Suspiciously" Parking Near A Homestead

Two women and a man from Shurugwi who allegedly connived to terminate a pregnancy were arrested and dragged before a magistrate recently.
Juliet Makarutse (62) and Fortunate Mashiwa (21) allegedly approached Mathew Moyana (25) for herbs to terminate Mashiwa’s pregnancy.
The three appeared before Shurugwi Magistrate Percy Mukumba two weeks ago facing charges of concealment of birth as defined in Section 106 of the Criminal code.
Prosecuting, Tafadzwa Guzete said Makarutse and Mashiwa approached Moyana at Chingami Compound Peakmine Farm Shurugwi and were given a traditional herb that Mashiwa used to terminate her pregnancy.
It is alleged that sometime in October, Mashiwa gave birth to a stillborn and Moyana wrapped the foetus in a baby blanket and put it in a sack, and buried it in a disused pit.

Shurugwi Trio Arrested For Terminating Pregnancy

A 21-year-old man from Matinyenya Village under Chief Nhema in Shurugwi has been arrested after he allegedly torched four homesteads for no apparent reason.
The suspect, Tinashe Machando, is also accused of unlawful entry and theft.
He appeared before Shurugwi Magistrate Percy Mukumba on Tuesday last week facing arson, unlawful entry and theft charges.
Prosecutor Tafadzwa Makotore told the court that sometime in April this year Machando entered Clever Zireva’s shop at Hanke Business Center and took away cellphones, Bluetooth speakers and 35 batteries.
He was allegedly caught selling the items at Tongogara Growth Point.
On the second count, Machando allegedly set Etina Zireva’s kitchen hut on fire before running away.
He allegedly entered another house through the window and stole US$50.
Zireva told <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/possessed-young-man-burns-down-neighbours-houses/">The Mirror</a> that she suspects Machando is possessed by evil spirits as he burns down people’s homes for no reason. She said:

I think this young man is possessed by evil spirits. My hut which he burnt is the fourth one and his parents are busy preparing to renovate the house for me.
He moves around stealing and burning people’s houses for no reason. After setting houses on fire, he comes the next morning to confess and apologise.

Machando was remanded in custody to 27 September 2022.

Plea For Help For 98-Year-old Grandpa Staying Alone

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) has confirmed reports of hyenas have been terrorising the Shurugwi South community.
Parks and Wildlife spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, told the ZBC News that parks rangers are tracking down to eliminate the animals that are killing livestock in the area. Farawo said:
<blockquote>We encourage communities to give u as much information as possible and we will react within the shortest possible time.
This is a very unfortunate incident where people are losing their livelihoods to these animals and this is a result of over-population of our animals.</blockquote>
This comes after ZIMPARKS recently <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/11/18/sleeping-man-dragged-from-hut-and-eaten-by-hyenas/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">confirmed reports which say a pack of hyenas dragged a man from his hut at night and killed him</a> before feeding on his body in Chirumhanzu, Midlands province.
Farawo also said six beasts have been killed by hyenas in Chirumhanzu adding that Zimparks rangers were on the ground tracking down the scavengers with a view to eliminating the hyenas.
Human-wildlife conflicts occur around the edges of protected areas where there are high human and wild animal interactions.
A number of measures which include constant maintenance and repairing of game fence have been proposed to address the issue.

ZIMPARKS: Hyenas Terrorise Shurugwi Community

ZIMASCO is reportedly evicting some retirees from the houses it gave them as retirement packages, The Standard reports.
The matter came to light during an investigation that was carried out by The Standard together with Humanitarian Information Facilitation Centre (HIFC).
The investigation claims that ZIMASCO which is under SinoSteel evicted the former employees forcing them to live in temporary structures near Boterekwa Mountain while some are reportedly staying in classrooms at nearby schools.
Narrating the unfortunate incident that has gave birth to a humanitarian crisis in the area, Fortune Ngwenya, who is the chairperson of the retrenched workers committee said:
<blockquote>When we were laid off, the company said part of our pensions would buy the houses that we were staying in. However, lately the company has turned around and they have started evicting us from those same houses. It is now four years since the deal was struck that the company was giving us the houses. It is totally unfair
I am one of the people who have been evicted and I know the pain going through many others. We feel we are being oppressed because we have no power. The company has power and support. But what they are doing is totally unfair and we call upon government to intervene and help us.</blockquote>
However, when ZIMASCO was contacted for comment, the company’s Spokesperson Clara Sadomba said the evictions were above board:
<blockquote>All dues to retrenched workers were completed in January 2018. There are no retrenched workers who deposited money for houses in Shurugwi. All evictions are being done after due process.</blockquote>
The retrenchments reportedly occurred after the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/08/09/landmark-ruling-workers-fired-3-months-notice-2015-zuva-petroleum-judgment/">2016 High Court judgment that allowed companies to let go or retrench their workers/employees</a> on a 3 months notice.
