Tropical Cyclone Freddy has revived in the Mozambique Channel and is expected to intensify before making landfall in Mozambique again, but this time in northern parts of the country later this week.
Strong winds, storm surges and life-threatening flooding are possible.
On Tuesday afternoon, Freddy’s centre was just off the southwestern coast of Madagascar.
According to <a href="https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/2023-03-06-tropical-cyclone-freddy-mozambique-madagascar-record">The Weather Channel</a>, 6 to 17 inches of rain has been recorded in Ranohira and Tulear (Madagascar) Sunday into Monday due to outer rainbands wrapping around Freddy.
The tropical weather system is expected to track toward the northwest over the next several days, gaining strength until reaching the coast of northern Mozambique on Saturday, 11 March 2023.
Landfall is expected to be farther north than its first Mozambique landfall on 24 February.
Cyclone Freddy could set a world record for the longest-lasting, most intense tropical cyclone.
It began its journey as a tropical storm on 6 February south of Indonesia and rapidly intensified to Category 1 intensity the following day.
By 11 February, Cyclone Freddy rapidly intensified again to Category 3.
Eight days later, as a Category 5 storm, Freddy became the longest-lasting, most intense Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone as measured by the ACE index – in records dating to 1980.
ACE is an abbreviation for accumulated cyclone energy, and is a metric used by scientists to measure the duration and intensity of tropical storms and hurricanes around the world.
The higher the ACE, the longer-lasting and more intense the tropical cyclone.
Fifteen days after it first became a tropical storm, Freddy became only the second southern Indian Ocean tropical cyclone in NOAA’s best track database to have reached at least Category 1 intensity and track from near Indonesia all the way to a Madagascar landfall.
Cyclone Eline/Leon in February 2000 was the only other storm to reach such an intensity as well as last and track that long.
Cyclone Freddy made landfall in southern Mozambique as a tropical storm on 24 February but quickly lost much of its intensity the following day.
By the time it entered southern Zimbabwe, Freddy’s remnant had downgraded to a low-pressure zone.
Instead of its remnant low dissipating over southern Africa, it made a U-turn and tracked eastward into the Mozambique Channel and became a tropical storm again last Friday.

Cyclone Freddy Returns To Madagascar, Now Threatens Mozambique Again

Tropical Cyclone Freddy is now in Mozambique amid concerns that it may regain its intensity over the Mozambique channel before making landfall in Madagascar for a second time.
The cyclone, which had considerably weakened to a low-pressure zone by the time it reached Zimbabwe last week, made a U-turn and tracked back into Mozambique.
According to the Department of Civil Protection (DCP) deputy director in charge of response and operations, Farai Hokonya, the weather system killed 2 people and blew off several roofs in Chimanimani and Chipinge.
According to Zoom Earth, as of 2.40 PM on 1 March 2023, Freddy was still in Mozambique but inching closer to the coast, moving eastwards towards Madagascar, with sustained wind speeds of 30km/hr.
Cyclone Freddy affected Mauritius, Réunion and Madagascar, before making landfall in Mozambique on 24 February and later crossing the border into Zimbabwe.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy is one of five in known history to set a record for track length in the southern Indian Ocean, as it formed further east than the previous cyclones, reported <a href="https://www.eumetsat.int/record-breaking-tropical-cyclone-freddy-crosses-indian-ocean">EUMETSAT</a>.
The cyclone developed in the Timor Sea and was reported by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) on 5 February.
During a westward journey, Tropical Cyclone Freddy underwent a few intensity changes, and at its strongest, had sustained winds of 270km/hr.

Cyclone Freddy Returns To Mozambique

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) says the country is safe for now from tropical storms Dingani and Freddy which are currently thousands of kilometres away from the continent.
The two tropical storms are evolving and intensifying about 4 600km away in the Indian Ocean.
MSD agro-meteorologist and long-range forecaster Benjamin Kwenda on Friday told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimbabwe-is-safe-from-tropical-storms-dingani-freddy/">The Herald</a> that the two tropical storms currently pose no direct threat to Zimbabwe. He said:
<blockquote>
Zimbabwe is still safe for now. The cyclones are still very, very far away. There is no need to mention them as yet.
We are monitoring developments in the Indian Ocean basin to see if there is anything that could possibly affect us.
Presently, there is nothing that could be a cause for concern.
</blockquote>
Cyclone Dingani was formed on 28 January and was moving towards Mauritius and Reunion, some islands on the Indian Ocean.
As of 10 February, the tropical storm, with a maximum speed of 110km/h was located 2106 km east-southeast of Diego Garcia, which is more than 4626km away from Zimbabwe.
Cyclone Dingani was travelling at a speed of 85 km/ hr and was expected to change its speed to 100 km by 11 February, according to experts.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy was formed on 03 February near the north-western coast of Australia and was heading towards African Islands, and moving at a wind speed of 95km/hr.

Tropical cyclones are not a new phenomenon for most people. Perhaps, the most infamous cyclone to ever hit the country is Cyclone Idai which is currently pummelling eastern Zimbabwe.
Almost two decades ago there was Cyclone Elin that wreaked havoc in the southern parts of the country. Below is a simple explanation of Tropical Cyclones:
<blockquote>Tropical cyclones are low-pressure systems that form over warm tropical waters and have sustained winds of 63 km/h or greater and gusts in excess of 90 km/h near the centre.
The gale force winds can extend hundreds of kilometres from the cyclone centre.
If the sustained winds around the centre reach 118 km/h and gusts in excess of 165 km/h then the system is called a severe tropical cyclone.
Tropical cyclones are referred to as hurricanes or typhoons in other countries.
The circular eye or centre of a tropical cyclone is an area characterised by light winds and often by clear skies.
Eye diameters are typically 40 km but can range from under 10 km to over 100 km.
The eye is surrounded by a dense ring of cloud about 16 km high known as the eyewall which marks the belt of strongest winds and heaviest rainfall.
Tropical cyclones derive their energy from the warm tropical oceans and do not form unless the sea-surface temperature is above 26.5°C, although once formed, they can persist over lower sea-surface temperatures.
Tropical cyclones can persist for many days and may follow quite erratic paths.
They usually dissipate over land or colder oceans.</blockquote>

Tropical Cyclones Explained

The Southern African Development Community Climate Service Centre (SADC-CSC) on March 13, 2019, issued a tropical cyclone alert whose forecast period is 13-17 March.
The Tropical Cyclone has been named Cyclone Idai which, as of March 13, was still moving towards central Mozambique with a speed of 176km/h.
Cyclone Idai is expected to make landfall on 15 March 2019.
<blockquote>The direct and extended danger area covers the central part of Mozambique, Malawi, east Botswana, Zimbabwe, central-east Zambia and extreme south DRC.
Parts of northwestern, central and north-east Zimbabwe are likely to receive increased rainfall amounts with direct impact due to Tropical Cyclone Idai around the 15th to 17th March 2019.
East Botswana, extreme south DDRC, Malawi, Mozambique, north South Africa, central Zambia and Zimbabwe are expected to be impacted heavily by the tropical cyclone.</blockquote>
