On 9 March, Tropical Storm Jude was strengthening in the Mozambique Channel, with maximum sustained winds near 85 km/h and estimated gusts of up to 120 km/h. 
The storm was expected to intensify into a Tropical Cyclone before making landfall in Mozambique’s Nampula province by the morning of 10 March.
Tropical Storm Jude is predicted to bring very strong to destructive winds near the impact zone. However, the main threat is expected to come from heavy, prolonged rainfall in Mozambique, particularly in the provinces of Nampula, Nissa, Zambezia, and Sofala, as well as southern Malawi. These regions are likely to experience significant rainfall over large areas.
Flooding is anticipated, especially in the Zambezia and Nampula regions of Mozambique, where maximum flow rates could reach levels associated with a 20-year return period or higher in the coming days.
It is worth noting that Nampula province had already been impacted by Tropical Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi in December 2024 and January 2025, respectively.

Tropical Storm Jude Strengthens As It Approaches Mozambique

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has said Tropical Storm Filipo which is currently on the south-east coast of Mozambique will not cause any damage in Zimbabwe as it is expected to only bring some winds and moderate rain.
In a statement, MSD head of forecasting James Ngoma said the public should not panic. He said:

Tropical Storm Filipo will not affect Zimbabwe much. More information is in the weather report and forecast but do not panic, Zimbabwe is safe.

In a weather update on Tuesday, 12 March, the MSD said Tropical Storm Filipo brought rainfall amounts of less than 15mm in some parts of the country. The MSD said:

Tropical Storm Filipo made landfall over Mozambique in the early hours of this morning. The highest was 62mm in Beira, Mozambique while Massangena, more inland Mozambique, received 33mm, as Filipo lost strength and headed further southward.
In Zimbabwe, the rainfall due to Filipo was below 15mm [14mm (Chipinge) and 11mm (Mukandi)] in the East Highlands, with windy and cloudy conditions in Manicaland and Masvingo.
Meanwhile, Filipo is also drawing moisture into the country from the north, this resulted in isolated thunderstorms in the Mashonaland Provinces with the highest recorded in these provinces being in Kotwa with 29mm and 12mm in Dotito.
The Meteorological Services Department will continue to monitor and keep the nation advised on any developments.

Zimbabwe Safe From Tropical Storm Filipo

Severe Tropical Storm Filipo made landfall on the city of Vilankulo in southern Mozambique on Tuesday morning.
The city’s mayor, Joaquim Quinito Vilanculos told Lusa News that the storm affected hundreds of houses and also several public buildings, in addition to leaving several roads impassable.
<a href="https://clubofmozambique.com/news/vilankulo-houses-and-public-buildings-affected-as-filipo-makes-landfall-in-mozambique-mayor-255517/">Club of Mozambique</a> quoted the president of the municipal council of Vilankulo in Inhambane province as saying the situation was “most complicated” in the neighbourhoods. He said:

We could be talking about hundreds of affected houses, which were left without roofs because it is there in the neighbourhoods that the situation is most complicated.
We are carrying out a survey, but we also have several public buildings affected.

Mozambican authorities estimate that around 525 000 people could be affected by the weather system which is battering central and southern Mozambique with strong winds and rain.
The Severe Tropical Storm is expected to exit into the Indian Ocean on 14 March, after tracking over the provinces of Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo.

Tropical Storm Filipo Makes Landfall In Mozambique

Tropical Storm Filipo which was projected to make landfall over northeastern Ihambane Province in Mozambique early Tuesday, 12 March resulted in thunderstorms in the Mashonaland provinces on Monday.
In a weather update on Monday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD said moisture being drawn into the country from the north due to the low-pressure weather system brought 36mm of rainfall to Guruve, which is in Mashonaland Central Province.
The MSD also said districts in the eastern parts of the country such as Chipinge, Chiredzi and Chimanimani were also expected to have localised heavier downpours of above 30mm this Tuesday, again due to tropical storm Filipo. It said:

Given the current trajectory which can be exemplified by that of Tropical Cyclone Freddy, the effects of the storm (strong winds, cloudy conditions and moderate rains) are slowly encroaching on the extreme south-eastern parts of the country and might only affect those parts.

Tropical storm Filipo is not expected to affect Zimbabwe much, with cyclone trackers showing its path affecting parts of Mozambique before it heads back into the Indian Ocean.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) <a href="https://reliefweb.int/report/mozambique/mozambique-tropical-storm-filipo-flash-update-no-1-11-march-2024">yesterday said</a> Tropical Storm Filipo was expected to make landfall over Govuro and Vilankulo districts, Inhambane province on 12 March.
The National Institute of Meteorology reported that Tropical Storm Filipo is set to strengthen into a Severe Tropical Cyclone.
Filipo was forecasted to make landfall over Inhambane province in the early hours of 12 March and to exit into the Indian Ocean on 14 March, after tracking over the provinces of Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo.
On 12 March, between 100 and 250 mm of precipitation are expected in Inhambane, Gaza and Sofala provinces.
On 13 March, between 50 and 100 mm of precipitation is expected in Gaza and Maputo provinces.

Tropical Storm Filipo Brings Relief To Mashonaland

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) says the country is safe for now from tropical storms Dingani and Freddy which are currently thousands of kilometres away from the continent.
The two tropical storms are evolving and intensifying about 4 600km away in the Indian Ocean.
MSD agro-meteorologist and long-range forecaster Benjamin Kwenda on Friday told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimbabwe-is-safe-from-tropical-storms-dingani-freddy/">The Herald</a> that the two tropical storms currently pose no direct threat to Zimbabwe. He said:
<blockquote>
Zimbabwe is still safe for now. The cyclones are still very, very far away. There is no need to mention them as yet.
We are monitoring developments in the Indian Ocean basin to see if there is anything that could possibly affect us.
Presently, there is nothing that could be a cause for concern.
</blockquote>
Cyclone Dingani was formed on 28 January and was moving towards Mauritius and Reunion, some islands on the Indian Ocean.
As of 10 February, the tropical storm, with a maximum speed of 110km/h was located 2106 km east-southeast of Diego Garcia, which is more than 4626km away from Zimbabwe.
Cyclone Dingani was travelling at a speed of 85 km/ hr and was expected to change its speed to 100 km by 11 February, according to experts.
Tropical Cyclone Freddy was formed on 03 February near the north-western coast of Australia and was heading towards African Islands, and moving at a wind speed of 95km/hr.

Tropical Storms Dingani & Freddy: Zimbabwe Is Safe For Now - Met Department

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has said Moderate Tropical Storm Chenseso is currently in the Mozambique Channel and if it moves according to the currently projected path, it should start diverting moisture away from Zimbabwe.
In an advisory issued on Tuesday, 24 January, the Met Department advised the public not to panic. It said:

The Moderate Tropical Storm Cheneso is currently in the Mozambique Channel (part of the Indian Ocean between Mozambique and Madagascar).
If it moves according to the currently projected trajectory, it should start diverting moisture away from Zimbabwe.
This will result in reduced rainfall activity in the southern districts of the country from Wednesday 25 January into the weekend. However, the trajectory is subject to change.
Therefore, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) will continue monitoring its trajectory and intensity and update the public through its official platforms.
</blockquote>

Met Department Gives An Update On Moderate Tropical Storm Cheneso

Mozambique has issued warnings of a possible tropical storm in the southern coastal province of Gaza.
Torrential rains and possible flooding are expected to start from Friday in the province.
The National Institute of Meteorology has urged residents to take precautionary measures to fortify their houses and not venture outside.
Speaking on State radio, Leonardo Duma from the institute, said the storm could affect the northern areas as well as those on the coast of the province.
He said strong winds accompanied by rains of up to 50 millimetres per hour are expected. Said, Duma:

If you have a house that is not in good condition try to fix it well in order to be able to resist these strong winds that we are predicting.

In 2022, Mozambique was pummelled by extreme weather events which included Tropical Cyclone Gombe, Tropical Storm Ana, and Tropical Storm Dumako.

Mozambique Issues Warnings Of A Possible Tropical Storm In Gaza

Five cyclones are expected to reach Zimbabwe in the current rainy season, the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department (MSD)</a> said.
Speaking during the National Tobacco Workshop, an agriculture meteorologist at the MSD, Benjamin Kwenda, said there are no predictions of when, where they could strike, and their strengths. <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/five-cyclones-to-hit-zim-expert/">The Herald</a> cites him as saying:

This season we are anticipating an increase in cyclone activity in January, February, March up to April but in terms of projections we are expecting five cyclones. 
The tropical cyclone is just like a whirlwind so when the whirlwind is generated you are not able to pick where exactly it will go but as it grows bigger you will then able to pick the direction and then you can actually say this is where it is going.

Zimbabwe is still reeling from the effects of Cyclones Idai, Gombe, Batsirai, Ana, Eloise, and Chalane which hit the southern African country in recent years.
Meanwhile, the Met Department was expecting rains into next week. There would be a rainfall decline up to Wednesday next week, with some places experiencing sunny conditions. Kwenda added:

For the period December, January and February we are expecting the bulk of the country to receive normal to above normal rainfall in this season and this is the same that we are expecting in January, February and March. We are generally looking for a better season in terms of seasonal totals.
</blockquote>
The Met Department urged farmers to insure their crops as there are high chances of more frequent extremes, such as hailstorms.
