Three people were killed by crocodiles while fishing at Lake Kariba this past weekend, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.
In the first incident which occurred on Saturday, police said that Shameton Sibanda was dragged from a fishing boat into the water by a crocodile and his remains were retrieved the following day.
The second victim, George Mawandiwa (38), who was part of a search party seeking to locate Sibanda, was also dragged by a crocodile into the water and killed on Saturday.
The third victim identified by the police as Bayton Chikomo (29), was attacked by a crocodile while casting nets using a dingy boat in Lake Kariba on Sunday.
Below is a statement issued by ZRP Senior Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations), Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi this Tuesday:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the death of three people who were attacked by crocodiles while fishing at Chinhandowa, Gatche Gatche fishing Camp, Lake Kariba on 18th and 19th November 2023.
The victims have been identified by their next of kin as listed:

<li>Shameton Sibanda (35) a male adult of Lanlolly Village, Magunje</li>
<li>George Mawandiwa (38) a male adult of Mahombekombe, Kariba</li>
<li>Bayton Chikomo (29) a male adult of Kaponda Village, Magunje.</li>
</ul>
In the first incident which occurred on 18th November 2023, Shameton Sibanda was dragged into water by a crocodile while fishing using a dingy boat in Lake Kariba.
Subsequently, a search party comprising George Mawandiwa and other fishermen was instituted. During the search, a crocodile emerged and dragged George Mawandiwa into the water. The search team later managed to retrieve the body of George Mawandiwa.
On 19th November 2023, the search team retrieved the body of Shamerton Sibanda. The bodies of the victims were taken to Kariba District Hospital for post-mortem.
In the second incident which occurred on 19th November 2023, Bayton Chikomo was attacked by a crocodile while casting nets using a dingy boat in Lake Kariba.
The remains of the victim were retrieved from the annals of a crocodile after it was shot dead by the search party. The body parts were taken to Kariba District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
The Police urges members of the public to be safety conscious in order to safeguard their lives during fishing expeditions especially when using dingy boats.

Three People Killed By Crocodiles On Lake Kariba

The Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (Zimparks) has managed to account for a crocodile that recently attacked and seriously injured two teenage boys in the Chivake River in Gutu.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimparks-kill-problem-gutu-crocodile/">The Herald</a> that the crocodile was shot and killed by rangers and its carcass taken to Masvingo. Said Farawo:

We eliminated the crocodile in the Chivake River in Gutu after it attacked and injured two boys who were taken to Chivhu Hospital for treatment. Their condition is stable.
Every time there is a problem animal, Zimparks attends to such situations and either kills the animal or animals or just scares them away and in this case we killed the problem crocodile in Chiguhune.

Farawo implored members of the public to treat water bodies with caution as they risk being attacked by crocodiles.
Cases of human-wildlife conflict have been on the rise in recent years and this has been attributed to a population increase of both humans and wildlife, the effects of climate change, deforestation, illegal cutting of grass, and general mismanagement of natural resources.

Zimparks Rangers Kill Problem Crocodile In Gutu

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) says a man believed to be in his early 40s was killed and eaten by a crocodile while fishing with his colleague in the Runde River around the Chiredzi area at night.
Zimpark rangers then hunted down the killer crocodile, almost 4 metres long, and eliminated it before ripping open its stomach to recover the remains of the victim, who is yet to be identified.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimparks-rangers-kill-runde-croc-after-reptile-eats-fisherman/">The Herald</a> and warned members of the public to be wary of crocodiles on water bodies. Farawo said:
<blockquote>
We have received an unfortunate incident where a man in his 40s was attacked and killed by a crocodile while fishing in Runde River. Our team of alert rangers trekked and killed the problem animal.
We want to encourage people to treat every water body with suspicion, especially during the current rainy season.
Information that we have at the moment is that the deceased fisherman was in the company of another colleague and the pair was fishing in the Runde River at night when the problem crocodile pounced.

Man Eaten By Crocodile While Fishing At Night

A 13-year-old boy from Checheche narrowly escaped death after he was attacked by a crocodile recently while crossing Save River with his friends.
Danmore Gwenzi fought the reptile with bare hands after it had grabbed his thigh.
He poked his hand into the mouth of the crocodile and it let loose its grip but removed a chunk of his flesh.
His friends ran away and alerted villagers who then rushed to the scene where they found Danmore on the riverbank.
The teenager was rushed to St Peter’s Hospital in Chisumbanje where he was admitted.
Danmore and his mother spoke to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/boy-13-fights-crocodile/">The Manica Post</a> about the attack. The boy said:

We were crossing the Save River with my friends. The water was ankle high and we thought no crocodiles would be lurking there.
As we were about to reach the riverbank, the crocodile suddenly latched on me. It grabbed me on the thigh and I gathered some courage and poked my hand into its mouth.
The crocodile loosened its grip and I managed to wobble to safety. Other villagers then came to my rescue.

His mother Marita Gwenzi said they were struggling with paying the hospital bills. She said:
<blockquote>
My son had a brush with death. I am happy he managed to survive. Danmore needs to be stitched and have a skin graft on his thigh. However, we are struggling to pay the bills.
</blockquote>
Last week, Cabinet adopted the establishment of a relief fund to cushion victims of human-wildlife conflicts but it is not clear if the Fund is now operational.

Boy (13) Fights Crocodile In Save River

A man from Zhombe, Midlands Province, has been missing since Monday this week after a crocodile dragged him into the Gweru River.
Mutsa Muchenje, whose age was not given, was reportedly fishing in a makeshift canoe with friends at a dam at ARDA Fair Acres in Dendera when he was attacked by the reptile.
Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit Chairperson, Fortune Mpungu, confirmed the incident to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/zhombe-man-mauled-by-crocodile/">Chronicle</a>, saying Muchenje’s remains are yet to be located. Said Mpungu:

We received a report of a man who was mauled by a crocodile on Monday while fishing with others. They were using a makeshift canoe when the crocodile attacked.
Others managed to escape unhurt but Muchenje could not and was dragged into the water.
</blockquote>
He added that the community together with the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (Zimparks) as well as Zibagwe Rural District Council rangers are conducting a search for Muchenje’s remains.

Zhombe Man Dragged From Makeshift Boat By Crocodile

A Zimbabwean national who survived a crocodile attack in Lake Kariba has been detained by a hospital in Zambia after he failed to settle hospital bills.
Alexander Chimedza, who had been hospitalised for the past month, was discharged six days ago but cannot leave the hospital until he settles at least US$150 in hospital bills.
Speaking in an interview with The Herald from Mutenderi Hospital in Zambia, where he was treated for the wounds he sustained during the crocodile attack, Chimedza said:

My brothers are trying whatever they can do to ensure the money is raised but so far it has been to no avail.
I am still admitted in the hospital until I raise the required amount.
</blockquote>

Crocodile Attack Survivor "Detained" By Zambian Hospital Over Unpaid Bill

A 31-year-old woman from Mabelreign suburb, in Harare, was arrested after she was allegedly found in possession of 52 crocodile skins at her home.
Vimbai Dzingirai appeared before Harare magistrate, Yeukai Dzuda, over the weekend and was not asked to plead.
Dzingirai is employed by a Masvingo white man Wadley Duncan Andrew.
Prosecutors alleged that detectives from the CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna received information that Dzingirai was in possession of crocodile skins, without a permit.
The detectives went to Dzingirai’s house in Mabelreign and advised her of the reason for their visit.
The officers searched the house and found 52 crocodile skins in her kitchen.
Dzingirai failed to produce a permit, authorising her to possess the crocodile skins and said the permit was in Masvingo.
The detectives took the skins, pending the availing of the permit, but Dzingirai failed to produce the permit and became evasive.

Woman (31) Arrested Over 52 Crocodile Skins

A man from Kariba, Mashonaland West Province, is admitted to a hospital in Zambia after he was seriously injured in a triple crocodile attack on the edge of Lake Kariba last Thursday.
Alexander Chimedza suffered a broken hand, injured thighs and broken fingers after he was attacked by three crocodiles on the shores of Lake Kariba.
Chimedza’s wife, Primrose Madufu (23) told H-Metro that her husband fought the reptiles with bare hands and killed one of them.
Madufu revealed that she heard of the incident after her husband had already been taken to the hospital. She said:

Chimedza was looking for worms to use in fishing around 8 am on the banks of the dam when the crocodiles attacked him.
He managed to put his hand in the mouth of one of the crocodiles and it died.
… Chimedza was taken to Zambia where he is having skin grafting.
He is responding well to the medication and procedure being taken by the medical staff where he is being treated.

However, the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) had not yet commented about the incident.

Kariba Man Fights Off Three Crocodiles

A newly married woman from Mberengwa lost her right leg after she was attacked by a crocodile while fetching water at Mazwi Dam on Friday last week.
According to ZBC News, the woman was about to return home when she was attacked by the vicious reptile.
Her husband’s younger sister ran to inform the husband who was ploughing the fields.
He rushed to the dam and used a log to strike the crocodile which then let go of its victim but not before it chopped off her leg just below the knee.
The woman was quickly taken to Musume Mission hospital some 25 kilometres away where she is currently receiving treatment.
The community is now appealing for financial assistance to cover the woman’s medical bills.
The incident is the second crocodile attack in as many months after a teenager was attacked at the same dam.
Villagers are now living in fear of the crocodiles which have attacked livestock.
Meanwhile, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/12/21/70-killed-by-wild-animals-in-2021/">the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority said 70 people were killed by wild animals across the country this year</a> as cases of human-wildlife conflicts rise.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said the escalation of human-wildlife conflicts is caused by the growing population of both humans and animal species.

Newly Married Woman Loses Leg In Crocodile Attack

A woman from Ngundu, Masvingo Province lost her hand after she was attacked by a crocodile while washing clothes at Chemukuyu Dam along Tugwi River on Saturday.
Sostina Machona from Zvamapere village, Chief Nyajena, Ngundu is now battling for her life at Masvingo Provincial Hospital after the attack.
Villagers are calling upon the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) to come and deal with the issue of problem animals in the area since the crocodile is frequently seen basking in the sun.
Jacob Mahlaule Chauke who ferried the victim to the hospital after the incident confirmed the incident to Two Nations.
Machona’s screams alerted Linet Matsika who was watering her garden and the latter ran to inform Nhamo Matungira a fisherman who was at the dam.
Matsika and Matungira then rescued Machona from being dragged into the dam by the humongous reptile.
Machona was first taken to Nyahombe clinic, then Neshuro District Hospital before being transferred to Masvingo.

Crocodile Chops Off Ngundu Woman’s Hand

Villagers in Donsa area, Silobela, are living in fear of crocodiles that have invaded the Gweru River, their source water.
The reptiles are killing people and livestock since the beginning of the rainy season last year.
Ward 29 councillor Willard Moyo told Southern Eye on Friday that they are exasperated by Zimparks’ failure to deal with the menacing crocodiles. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>Gweru River is now a no-go area. The river is our only source of water as efforts to rehabilitate Donsa Dam became politicised and it has no water.
We do not understand why the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) would allow such dangerous creatures to live among people.</blockquote>
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said that people should be careful when approaching water bodies because crocodiles live in water.
Farawo added that there is a need to raise awareness so that people appreciate animal behaviour.
If people believe they are being threatened by crocodiles, they should report the animals to Zimparks so that they are eliminated, Farawo said.

A four-year-old girl from Kariba town died after being attacked by a crocodile and dragged into a pool where the reptile kept her underwater for several minutes.
The victim was being carried on the back by her 10-year-old niece while crossing a stream along a footpath linking Destiny Suburb and Batonga Federation Section.
After the initial attack, the niece escaped with scratches but the four-year-old, who had fallen to the ground, was grabbed on the head and dragged into a nearby pool.
The niece rushed to their home which is about 100 metres away and alerted the elders who promptly descended on the stream and used nets to comb the area.
The residents started throwing stones into the pool and this forced the crocodile to emerge from the water with the girl and later released her.
One of the residents, and neighbour to the family, Elias Mazabuko who had jumped into the pool where the crocodile had emerged and started searching the area. He said:
<blockquote>I just decided to get into the water mindful of the fact that any delays would make it difficult to locate the body. At this stage, I was clear in my mind that there was no chance of getting the girl alive.</blockquote>
When Zimparks rangers arrived, residents had managed to corner the crocodile using nets before striking it with an axe and killing it.
The girl was identified as Trish and her body was taken to Kariba District Hospital mortuary.

Girl (4) Dies In Crocodile Attack In Kariba

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) rangers shot and killed a crocodile that sneaked out of Zananda Dam and strayed into a homestead in Shurugwi on Monday night.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the shooting and said crocodiles are supposed to stay in the water and they become a menace once they start straying out. He said:
<blockquote>Crocodiles are supposed to stay in the water and the smoment they start straying into homesteads they become a menace.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Shurugwi community members were not happy with the killing of the reptile saying it was cruelty to animals and Zimparks should simply have taken the crocodile back to the river.
The incident happened at the Marandure homestead at Zananda Village, Ward 7 under Chief Nhema. The home is located about 400m from a dam.
Togwirei Marandure told Masvingo Mirror that it was untrue <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/12/08/crocodile-found-in-school-heads-bedroom/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">that the crocodile was discovered in the bedroom of the late former school head as was reported earlier.</a>
He said the crocodile was spotted by his aunt in the yard at around 8 pm when it was raining.
Togwirei added that neighbours were called and when they chased it, it dashed into a disused house.
The Councillor for the area, Jabulani Muzwezwe, did not share the community’s revulsion over the killing of the giant reptile, saying Zimparks had done a good thing by ridding the crocodile from the community.

Zimparks Shoots 'Bedroom' Crocodile

A humongous crocodile was found in the house of a late school head in Zananda Village, Ward 7 in Shurugwi under Chief Nhema at around 8 pm on Monday.
The discovery of the reptile in the late Marandure’s bedroom left people at the homestead dumbfounded as they insisted that the doors were all closed.
The crocodile was discovered by one of the late Marandure’s daughters.
The house is located about 400 metres away from Zananda Dam.
Jabulani Muzwezwe who is the councillor for the area confirmed the story and said the crocodile was still in the house waiting for ZimParks officials to come and collect it. Said Muzwezwe:
<blockquote>I am at the scene since morning waiting for the Parks Department. Everyone wonders how the crocodile entered the house because residents are saying the doors were closed.</blockquote>

A Silobela man was attacked and killed by a crocodile as he was trying to retrieve a friend’s fishing rod, New Zimbabwe reports.
According to the publication, Julius Hoko of Ward 8 under headman Gobo in Chief Malisa was in the process of herding cattle while fishing when the incident happened. Hoko’s brother narrated the story:
<blockquote>We gathered that my brother had taken cattle to the pastures. It was within the process of herding cattle that he passed by the dam where he saw a friend who was fishing and joined him. It was immediately after joining his fishing friend that his (friend) rod got stuck within the reeds.
It was in the process of trying to retrieve the rod that he lost balance and fell into the dam. That was when he got attacked by the crocodile. The friend could not do much to assist as my brother fought with the crocodile</blockquote>
Villagers complained about ZimParks not doing anything about the crocodile despite receiving reports of its existence in the dam that sustains life in the area.

Man Fatally Attacked By A Crocodile While Fishing In Silobela

A 13-year-old boy from St Mary’s in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hwange" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hwange</a> was dragged underwater by a crocodile and only managed to escape after his friend pelted it with stones.
Proud Ngwenya has admitted at St Patrick’s Hospital for five days to receive treatment for injuries he sustained while fighting off a crocodile. Speaking to Sunday News from a hospital bed, Proud said:
<blockquote>We were fishing in the water at Kalope Dam when I felt some sharp pain as something gripped my leg. I tried to pull away but there I discovered that I was being dragged to the deep ends.</blockquote>
Proud said after he realised that he was being dragged by the mammoth reptile, he started kicking and stabbing it while his friend pelted it with stones. The crocodile eventually released him.

Boy (13) Fights Off Crocodile With Friend's Help

A girl from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hwange">Hwange</a> reportedly helped save the life of her 9-year-old friend by fighting a huge crocodile by poking its eyes till it released its victim Sunday News reports.
The little heroine narrates how they were swimming and saw her friend Latoya struggling to stay afloat and then spotting the huge crocodile grabbing her hand before she leapt to her rescue.
According to the publication, Rebbeca the girl who rescued her friend narrated the story:
<blockquote>We had just left the water when we heard Latoya who was left alone swimming near the neck deep zone screaming that something was biting her hand. Since I was the eldest among the other seven children, I felt the urge to save her. So, I jumped into the water and swam to where she was struggling to float. 11 Year Old Girl Fights Huge Crocodile To Save Her Friend - Report

A Madziwa fisherman was killed by a crocodile while fishing at the Eben Dam on Saturday morning.
The victim, identified as Masauso Sango of Gombora village under Chief Nyamaropa, was attacked while in the company of other three fishermen who tried to rescue him to no avail.
Police in Mashonaland Central confirmed the incident. The Acting Provincial acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati said
<blockquote>I can confirm that Sango was killed by a crocodile while fishing in the crocodile-infested dam. As police, we urge people not to fish in these crocodile-infested dams as they expose their lives to danger.</blockquote>

Madziwa Fisherman Killed By Crocodile While Fishing At Eben Dam

Saint of the Last Days Church pastor, Jonathan Mthethwa was killed by three crocodiles as he attempted to walk on water to demonstrate God’s power.
Witnesses said the pastor had prepared for the demonstration by praying the whole week and fasting. The pastor had about 30 metres into the river and had promised his congregation he would rise up above the water. One of the witnesses Deacon Nkosi said:
<blockquote>The pastor taught us about faith on Sunday last week. He promised he would demonstrate his faith to us today, but he unfortunately ended up drowning and getting eaten by three large crocodiles in front of us. We still don’t understand how this happened because he fasted and prayed the whole week. They finished him in a couple of minutes.</blockquote>

Pastor eaten by crocodiles after attempting to walk on water like Jesus

Missing South African professional hunter Scott van Zyl’s remains were found in crocodile that was shot in Zimbabwe. DNA tests on the remains confirmed that they belonged to Zan Zyl who disappeared while hunting last week.
Sakkie Louwrens, director of a South-African crime-fighting NGO said:
<blockquote>Permission was given for three Nile crocodiles in the area to be shot, and one of them contained Mr Van Zyl’s remains, Subsequent DNA tests have proved the remains to be those of Mr Van Zyl.</blockquote>
Van Zyl was married, had two children and took foreign clients on hunting trips.
