Two minors, both two years old, died from water burns and drowning in separate incidents on Thursday in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Lupane">Lupane</a> and Gwelutshena.
In the first incident, a Lupane minor died from burns sustained after a five-year-old child attempted to remove a bucket of hot water from the stove.
Police confirmed the sad incident via their social media communication channels. Read a police statement seen by Pindula News:

The ZRP urges parents and guardians to always ensure the safety and security of children. On 23/02/23, a two-year-old minor succumbed to hot water burns which he incurred from an accident that happened at Sibangani Village 2 in Lupane when another child (5) tried to remove a tin of boiling water from the stove. The mother of the children (37) had left the children alone and went to the garden.

In another case that happened the same day, a two-year-old minor drowned in a shallow well. Police reported:
<blockquote>
In another case on 23/02/23 another two-year-old minor drowned in a shallow well at Wakufa Village, Gwelutshena whilst playing alone. The mother of the child (29) later checked for the child only to find the child’s lifeless body submerged in water and legs stuck in the mud.
</blockquote>
Following the incidents, police urged “parents and guardians to always ensure the safety and security of children”.

Two Minors Die From Water Burns, Drowning

A 63-year-old man and his donkey cart were washed away by a flooded river in Matobo District, Matabeleland South Province.
The deceased, Nhlanganiso Tshuma, a villager under Chief Fuyana was in the company of two other men when the incident occurred on Thursday.
Tshuma and his donkey-drawn scotch cart were swept away by strong currents as he attempted to cross the Mabonyane River near Maphisa Growth Point.
His body was found the following day about 5km from the bridge by the riverside.
A video of Tshuma being swept away is circulating on social media.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Matabeleland South Province, Inspector Loveness Mangena, confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/rivers-in-flood-man-63-plus-donkeys-yoked-to-cart-swept-away/">The Sunday News</a>. She said:
<blockquote>
The incident happened on Thursday as the now deceased attempted to cross a river in flood and when he was halfway through, he was overpowered by the water and swept away.
</blockquote>
Tshuma was reportedly coming from Maphisa Growth Point on his way home.

Man (63), Plus Cart Drawn By Donkeys Swept Away By Flooded River

More than five people are feared dead, while three others were rescued, after a ferry capsized on Lake Kariba, early on Friday morning.
Of the three survivors of the boat accident, two are believed to be Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) officers.
Illegal ferries are the sole means of transport for commuters between Kariba Town and the many islands along Lake Kariba.
NewZimbabwe.com reported sources, including a Kariba fisherman, Chenjerai Zambezi, as saying the boat was carrying passengers and goods from Nyaodza fishing camp to Nyamhunga township in the resort.
Zambezi said the boat sank due to suspected overloading at around 4 am today.
He added the boat had eight passengers on board, and of these five were still missing and believed to have drowned.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) had not yet commented on the accident.

5 Feared Dead As Boat Capsizes On Lake Kariba

A 15-year-old boy from Plumtree drowned on Wednesday while swimming with his friends in a sewage pond, CITE has established.
The now-deceased has been identified as Shaun Khuphe. His body was only retrieved from the pond on Thursday afternoon.
Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thabani Mkhwananzi confirmed the incident. He said:
<blockquote>I confirm that we received the report of a 15-year-old boy who drowned on the 19th of May around 1300 hours.</blockquote>
He said the now deceased was among a group of five boys who went swimming in the sewage ponds in the afternoon.
When they arrived at the ponds, the now-deceased removed clothes and entered the ponds but he failed to swim and he drowned.
The other boys attempted to help their colleague but failed and that was when they alerted their parents.
A report was then made to the police who attended the scene.
Assistant Inspector Mkhwananzi called on parents and guardians to supervise their children. He said:
<blockquote>We urge parents and guardians to supervise where their children play. They should be aware of the whereabouts of their children.
We also urge the responsible authorities to see how best those sewage ponds can be secured to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.</blockquote>

Boy (15) Drowns In Sewage Pond

A 29-year-old Zimbabwean woman who is accused of drowning her newly born baby girl in a 20-litre bucket of boiling water in South Africa will stand for trial on 14 May at the Brits Magistrates Court in Gauteng province.
Wendy Tapiwa Chipo of Rietfonten was remanded in custody after she abandoned her bail application. She is facing a murder charge.
National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) spokesperson for North Gauteng, Lumka Mahanjana said the offence was committed on 16 March. She said:
<blockquote>It is alleged that Chipo tried to abort her baby, when that failed and the baby came out alive, she dipped her in a 20-litre bucket of boiling water.
She then put the body in a plastic bag. Together with her friend, they went to bury the baby at a bush near where she stays in Sunnyway Village in Rietfonten.</blockquote>
Mahanjana said the matter came to light on 17 March when the friend who could no longer keep the secret reported the matter to the police.
She also took the police to the shallow grave and the remains were recovered.
Chipo was arrested a day later while on the run to Pretoria.

Zim Woman Drowns Newly-born Baby In Boiling Water In SA

Police have expressed concern over the rise in drowning cases countrywide with 483 cases recorded in 2020 compared to 411 cases in 2019.
In a press statement on Wednesday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi advised members of the public to be safety conscious as the rain season is still continuing. The statement read:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports that the country recorded a total of 483 cases of drowning for the period January to December 2020, compared to 411 cases recorded during the same period in 2019.
Of the 483 cases recorded in the year 2020, 26 cases were recorded in Harare, 7 in Bulawayo, 54 in Midlands, 55 in Manicaland, 55 in Masvingo, 30 in Mat North, 31 in Mat South, 58 in Mash East, 70 in Mash Central and 97 in Mash West.
In January 2021, a total of 59 cases of drowning were recorded in the country, compared to 71 cases recorded during the same period, in 2020.
It has been observed that more males drowned compared to females. In January 2021, 49 males drowned compared to 10 females.
Cases of drowning occur mostly when people attempt to cross flooded rivers, streams and other water points.
Children are drowning whilst playing or swimming in rivers, trenches and other water sources whilst some adults engage in fishing escapades using dingy boats or crafts which are not safe.
We also have people who try to cross rivers and streams using homemade boats and in the process drown.
As the rainy season is still continuing, the Police urge the public to be safety conscious and avoid crossing, fishing or allowing children to play in water bodies.</blockquote>

Police Concerned Over Spike In Drowning Cases Countrywide

Three boys from Tategulu Village under chief Magama in Tsholotsho drowned in Gwayi River during a fishing expedition on Wednesday.
The bodies of Tobiko Sebele (15), Methembe Dube (14) and his brother Mandlenkosi Dube (12) were retrieved from the river around 2 PM on Thursday with the help of the sub-aqua unit from Bulawayo.
Reports suggest that Tobiko jumped into the river in an attempted to rescue Methembe who had slipped and fallen into the water.
When Mandlenkosi realised that the two were not emerging from the water, he also jumped into the river. All the three boys drowned.
Nqominkosi Ndlovu (17) whom they went with, returned home alone to deliver the bad news.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the case. She said:
<blockquote>We also urge the local authorities to report all cases of drowning in time and to organise themselves and engage the sub-aqua unit so that they can be trained on how to swim and rescue people.</blockquote>

3 Boys Drown While Fishing In Gwayi River

Three passengers, including a minor, onboard a pirating Toyota Noah drowned when the vehicle was swept away by a flooded river in Zvishavane over the weekend.
According to acting police spokesperson for Midlands Province, Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende, the incident occurred on Sunday around 6 PM at Mutorahuku River near Kashamba Primary School just outside Zvishavane.
The Toyota Noah had 10 people on board including the driver who attempted to cross the flooded.
All the people managed to disembark from the vehicle through the windows but while the driver and the other 7 passengers swam to safety, the three drowned. Said Asst Insp Mukwende:
<blockquote>Police in Zvishavane are investigating a case in which three passengers drowned after the driver of a vehicle they were travelling in tried to cross a flooded river.
The incident occurred on Sunday at around 6 PM at Mutorahuku River near Kashamba Primary School on the outskirts of Zvishavane.
&#8230; Circumstances are that on the said date one Cornelius Manduku (48) of Village Runyararo under Chief Jahana in Insiza was driving a Toyota Noah from Zvishavane on the way back to Insiza with 10 passengers on board.
Upon arrival at Mutorahuku River near Kashamba Primary School, they found the river flooded.</blockquote>
Asst Insp Mukwende said police identified the three deceased passengers Tariro Makwa (24), Aneno Manduku (39) and a minor Gertrude Mudhonga (9). She added:
<blockquote>The three, Manduku, Makwa and Mudhonga got out of the car through the windows and unfortunately drowned, while the other seven passengers and the driver managed to swim out of the flooded river.</blockquote>

Three Drown After Pirate Car Is Stuck In Flooded River

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is concerned with cases of drowning which are occurring in the country since the onset of the rainy season.
In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said most cases of drowning involve minors hence repeated calls for parents and guardians to monitor their children whilst they are playing. Said Nyathi:
<blockquote>In Hwange, on 11th December 2020, a male juvenile aged 7 years old drowned in Sianyama One Community Dam, Siabuwa after he fell off a floating log.
His body was retrieved and taken to the hospital for post-mortem. In Victoria Falls, on the same date, a male juvenile (10) drowned while swimming in Malata River.
In a related matter which occurred in Inyathi, on 7th December 2020, a 36-year-old man drowned while attempting to cross Mbembesi River, which was flooded.
His body was discovered on 11th December 2020, floating in the river, about 4 km away from the crossing point.</blockquote>
Nyathi urged members of the public to take heed of safety and precautionary measures in order to safeguard their lives during this rainy season.

Police 'Concerned' With Cases Of Drowning Since Onset Of Rain Season

The bodies of two Victoria Falls men who drowned in the Zambezi River last Thursday have been found floating 5km downstream.
Elson Mathe (24) and Thamsanga Ncube (22) were with about 25 friends during a swimming expedition at gorge number six when a huge wave of water hit them around 3:40 pm.
The two drowned while the other group members who were on the edge of the water swam to safety.
A search for the bodies started on Friday and it was not before Sunday midmorning when the bodies were spotted and secured in ‘body bags’.
A team comprising police, Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority rangers and guides from the Rafting Association of Zimbabwe (RAZ) took part in the search.
RAZ chairman, Skinner Ndlovu, explained how the team managed to retrieve the bodies. He said:
<blockquote>We started mobilising our team after we received a call from ZRP. We usually do it with police sub-aqua unit but they were doing another rescue somewhere.
We set off in conjunction with police and Zimparks and we had been sending people down the river since Friday to check until today when the first team of kayakers found them and notified us.
We organised a few guys and went down in a raft to do the recovery of the bodies and we have managed to get them all. We want to thank the effort of everyone who was involved in the operation.</blockquote>
Ndlovu said water levels in the Zambezi River were still high and only suitable for high water rafting, which starts from Rapid Number 11 going downstream, making any water activity between Rapid number 1 and 10 dangerous.

Two Bodies Retrieved From Zambezi River After 3-day Search

Residents of Pfupajena were left shell-shocked after a man drowned in a dam along Mupfure River, and when the body was retrieved, the corpse came out with its hand clutching a dead duck.
Tapiwa Banda died last week when he dived into the dam while trying to retrieve a duck he had killed using a catapult. A local resident, Gift Miti narrated what transpired on the fateful day:
<blockquote>On the fateful Thursday, Banda was in the company of his wife on their way to Mupfure River for illegal gold panning so they could get cash to buy food.
Upon reaching the dam, he extracted his catapult from a tools bag and shot a duck that was close to the edge.
He stripped off his clothes and handed his wife before he dived into the dam and by the time he grabbed the duck, he started to drown.
When he was in the water, his wife rushed to the farm compound to seek help but those who were first to reach the scene failed to rescue Banda because it appears like his legs were tied on something at the bottom of the dam.
Banda used to swim after shooting his prey but what happened last Friday left the entire farm shell-shocked. How can a corpse have a firm grip on a duck?</blockquote>
Farm dwellers are convinced that familiar spirits, possibly mermaids, could be responsible for the strange happenings at the dam in August of every year.
They claimed that either an animal or person dies mysteriously at this time of the year and the intervention of prophets and traditional medium spirits could end the strange occurrences.

Corpse Retrieved From Dam While Firmly Clutching A Dead Duck

A fisherman who was evidently under the influence of alcohol allegedly drowned in the Zambezi River in Msuna area on Wednesday after he jumped out a canoe and plunged into the waters trying to show off his swimming skills to his colleagues.
The now deceased, Recent Dube (35), of Makwa village under Chief Whange was in the company of his friends Kelvin Nyoni (28) also from Makwa as well as Luckson Tshabalala (35) of Matetsi village in neighbouring Chief Shana area when the incident happened.
The trio was on a fishing camp on the Zambia side of the Zambezi River since the 6th of August until Wednesday when they canoed back to the Zimbabwean side.
The tragic accident was confirmed by Matabeleland North police spokesperson Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese. She said:
<blockquote>I can confirm that we received a report about a man who drowned in the Zambezi River. On 19 August at around 6 am Recent Dube and his two friends canoed back to the Zimbabwean side.
As they were about to reach the riverbank, Dube under the influence of alcohol, tried to demonstrate to his friends how to swim. He jumped into the water and he however drowned.</blockquote>
Nyoni, one of the deceased’s friends, informed a Neighbourhood Watch Committee member Lazarus Nyoni in Chezya village who mobilized villagers to search for the body.
The search team retrieved the body and a report was made to the police who attended the scene.

Drunk Fisherman Drowns While Showing Off Swimming Skills To Colleagues

Two men, both aged 25, drowned in a dam after a swimming competition for $200.00 went awry.
Acting police spokesperson for <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mashonaland_East_Province" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mashonaland East Province</a> Assistant Inspector Misheck Denhere said Marshal Dhlamini and Benjamin Dick drowned in Musinje Dam in Juru Growth Point last week. He said:
<blockquote>Circumstances are that on November 12, around 1700 hours, Dhlamini and Dick in the company of three others went to Musinje Dam to take a bath.
Upon arrival at the dam, Dhlamini challenged Dick for a swimming race across the dam and suggested that the winner will get $200, Dick accepted the challenge and the two managed to swim across and they decided to complete the race by swimming back.
However, they got exhausted while in the middle of the dam and drowned to death.</blockquote>

Two Men Drown During Swimming Contest For RTGS$200

An upper 6 student at Tennyson Hlabana High School, Ngqabutho Ncube (18) drowned while swimming with friends at a dam in Hope Fountain.
He left school on Monday in the company of his 19-year-old friend on their way home but decided to go swimming first. They met other schoolboys at the dam and he ended up drowning. Speaking to The Chronicle, Bulawayo Metropolitan province police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the incident. She also warned members of the public to stay away from dams and other water bodies especially if they cannot swim. Acting Bulawayo Provincial Education Director Mrs Ollicah Kaira expressed her condolences following Ncube’s death.

Upper 6 student drowns while swimming in dam

The ZRP provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed to NewZimbabwe.com that Philomena Mutasa (23) of Nyamatsine Business Centre was swept away while taking photos of herself on the banks of a flooded Nyatsime River in Nyamajuro, under Chief Marange.
Philomena was in the company of siblings Ronald Mutasa, 24, and Miriam Mutasa, 20 when they went for a photo shoot at the river. The now-deceased reportedly stood on a rock and slipped into the river before drowning. Her siblings Miriam and Ronald unsuccessfully tried to rescue her.
Her body was found by a passerby a week later floating near Odzi footbridge, about 11km away from where she drowned. Inspector Kakohwa urged members of the public not to gamble with death by playing around flooded rivers.

The body of an unidentified man has been found on a river bank in Mangwe District in a suspected case of drowning.
Bulilima-Mangwe officer commanding crime, Superintendent Pedzai Dzindimu, said the body of the middle aged man was found on the banks of Sanzukwi River in Makorokoro Ward on Saturday afternoon. He said investigations were underway to establish the identity of the man. He also appealed to members of the public who might be missing their relative to contact the police and said that at the moment the body is housed at the Plumtree District Hospital Mortuary.
Chief Hobodo whose area of jurisdiction covers the village where the body was found said villagers in his area were not aware of the man’s identity. He said he had communicated with traditional leaders from neighbouring villagers with the hope of finding his relatives.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Charity_Charamba">Charity Charamba</a> confirmed that six people drowned while 14 others escaped unhurt after they were swept away by water while pushing a lorry that had developed a mechanical fault at a river in Mwenezi, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Masvingo">Masvingo</a> Province last Friday.
She said by Friday, police had managed to retrieve one of the bodies. Charamba also warned people to avoid crossing or swimming in flooded rivers as they risked their lives. She said cases of drowning were on the increase and police were urging parents to also take care of their children.

6 drown in Masvingo

A woman, Tracy Ncube of Asibambaneni village, under Chief Nyangazonke, drowned at around 6PM during a Twelve Apostolic Church baptism ceremony on Wednesday drowned during a baptism session in Shashane River in Kezi and her body was retrieved the following day.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the drowning incident. Said Ndebele:
<blockquote>We received the report on the drowning of a woman in Shashane River. After congregants failed to retrieve the body, they reported the matter to us. Our team also failed to locate the body that night and we had to engage the Sub Aqua Unit. However, before the Sub Aqua team arrived villagers assisted in retrieving it.</blockquote>
Ndebele also took the time to warn the Zimbabwean public adding that cases of drowning normally increase this time of the year.
