Listed companies Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (Econet) and EcoCash Holdings (EcoCash) have received approval from the central bank to conduct rights offers in United States dollars. Rights offers are a corporate action where existing shareholders are given the opportunity to purchase additional shares at a discounted price. It allows companies to raise capital from their current investors, who have the right to buy new shares before they are offered to the public.
Through these rights offers, Econet and EcoCah aim to raise $30.3 million each from their existing shareholders. The companies were unable to obtain foreign currency through the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s auction process to redeem their debentures (long-term loans), which matured in April 2023. As a result, they sought exchange control approvals to proceed with the rights offers.
In separate statements on Tuesday, the companies stated that the ultimate Zimdollar price for the shares would be determined when they receive foreign currency on the interbank market to redeem the debentures, following the country’s exchange control laws. Econet said:

Members are hereby advised that the company has now obtained exchange control approval for the rights offer to be made in United States dollars.
</blockquote>
The companies said the final price of the shares will be determined when the companies receive foreign currency on the interbank market to redeem the debentures. Shareholders registered as of September 1, 2023, will have the option to exercise their rights using the local currency. A deposit will be required for each share, with the remaining balance to be paid once foreign currency has been secured. The applicable exchange rate will be the prevailing interbank rate plus a 10% margin.
The rights offer is scheduled to open on September 11, 2023, and close on September 29, 2023, with the results expected to be announced on October 6, 2023. The debentures stem from a capital raise exercise in 2017, which aimed to secure foreign currency for external loan repayments.
This approval allows Econet and EcoCash to proceed with their rights offers in an effort to raise the necessary funds from existing shareholders. It provides them with an alternative means to obtain foreign currency, as they were unable to access it through the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s auction process.

Econet And EcoCash Received Central Bank Approval For US Dollar Rights Offers

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the country’s largest mobile network operator by subscriber base, has with effect from Tuesday, 20 June, hiked data bundles.
In a brief notice sent via SMS to its millions of subscribers, Econet said:

We are reviewing our ZWL data and SMEs bundle prices effective Tuesday, 20 June 2023.
</blockquote>
An 8 gig private WIFI data bundle now costs ZWL$111 342 up from ZWL$37 114 while a 15 gig bundle is now available for ZWL$201 033 up from ZWL$67 011.
Econent said a 25 gig will cost ZWL$294 675 from ZWL$98 225 and 50 gig users will have to pay ZWL$506 106 up from ZWL$168 702.
The latest tariff hike by Econet comes as the value of the Zimbabwe dollar has continued to plummet against other currencies at both official and parallel markets.
Some service providers are now devising ways to reject the Zimbabwe dollar such as engaging in forward rating and claiming that their point-of-sale machines are down, leaving customers with no option except to make payments in foreign currency.

Econet In Massive Data Bundle Tariff Hike

Econet announced the launch of its 5G network in Zimbabwe in February 2022. The company rolled out 5G with the help of Ericsson. Econet is the only mobile operator in Zimbabwe currently that has 5G. 
In general, 5G offers internet speeds that are up to 10 times that of 4G. 
With the release of more and more 5G capable phones globally, Zimbabweans may not be clear if these phones are relevant in Zimbabwe.

According to the telecoms industry regulator, POTRAZ,  Econet has a total of 22 5G base stations currently (<a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2023/04/potraz-q4-2022-report-out-internet-penetration-now-65-3-theres-more/">based on December 2022 data</a>).  In March this year, Econet promised to deploy more 5G sites around the country but did not commit to any numbers.
<h2>Does it make sense to buy a 5G phone in Zimbabwe?</h2>
As you can see above, the total number of 5G base stations in the whole country is just 22. This is a very small number, especially considering that 5G has a limited range compared to 4G and 3G. 
To put it into perspective, Econet has over 900 4G base stations in Zimbabwe. Based on these numbers, in a practical sense, we can’t really say there is 5G in Zimbabwe.
In the rare case that you live or work in one of the 22 locations listed above that have 5G, it will be worth it for you, yes. Otherwise, there’s no point.
<h2>Does NetOne have 5G?</h2>
As of the writing of this article, NetOne does not have any commercial 5G sites in Zimbabwe.
What about Telecel? We cannot even talk of 5G when it comes to Telecel. The company is struggling to deploy a 4G network, with only 17 of them so far according to the industry regulators report.
<h2>Which phones available in Zimbabwe have 5G?</h2>
This is a hard question to answer because most of the phones in Zimbabwe do not come into the country through the manufacturer’s official channels. 
People buy mobile phones that were made for other markets like US, UK, South Africa, and Australia (basically where Zimbabweans in the diaspora are found). They also buy phones meant for Asia that are imported via market the Dubai gray market channels. 
This means that 5G phones available in these countries can also generally be available on the local market. But again, there’s no point in buying a 5G mobile phone right now. At least it being 5G must not be the reason for buying it.

5G Network Coverage In Zimbabwe - Where Can You Find It? Should You Buy a 5G Phone?

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is set increases voice, Data, and SMS tariffs and bundle prices with effect from 20 April 2023.
Econet, which is by far the country’s largest mobile network operator (MNO) by subscriber base, has notified its customers about the impending tariff adjustment.
A notice published on the company’s social media pages this Wednesday reads:

Dear Customer, This serves to notify you of the planned changes on our Voice, Data, and SMS Tariffs and Bundles Prices effective Thursday, 20 April 2023.

This comes after the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) approved tariff increases in February and April.
State-owned mobile network operator NetOne increased tariffs on 7 April 2023.
Telecommunications companies in Zimbabwe face various challenges that affect their operations and profitability.
These include a complex and often unpredictable regulatory environment, high inflation rates, currency fluctuations, shortages of foreign currency, frequent power outages, and fraud and cybercrime which has led to financial losses.

Econet Announces Planned Tariffs Hike

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe increased its subscriber market to 69.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022.
The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) Sector Performance Report for the 4th Quarter of 2022, which was released last week, shows that Econet grew its customer base by 2.9 percent to 69.9 percent.
Econet’s subscriber base grew by 234 485 new subscribers to 9 988 105, up from 9 753 620 recorded in the third quarter of 2022.
NetOne and Telecel experienced a 2.4 percent and 0.5 percent fall in active customers, to end the quarter at 27.4 percent and 2.7 percent subscriber market share respectively.
NetOne’s subscriber base fell to 3 922 734 from 4 339 133, while Telecel lost 79 538 subscribers to close the year at 389 951. Part of the report reads:
Telecel and NetOne’s active subscriptions declined by 16.9 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively, which outweighed subscriber growth recorded by Econet and resulted in a total mobile subscriptions decline by a margin of 1.8 percent.
All three mobile operators experienced subscriber fluctuations during the course of 2022.
However, only Econet surpassed its December 2021 active subscriber base, according to the POTRAZ report.
Econet also continued to dominate the market share for internet and data traffic. Said POTRAZ:

Econet continued to dominate the market share for internet and data traffic (74.5 percent), owing to its huge active mobile subscriber base as well as its wide network coverage.
However, in the quarter under review, Econet lost market share by a margin of 2.1 percent.
Conversely, NetOne gained market share by 2.1 percent whilst Telecel maintained its position.

Econet Increases Subscriber Market Share To 69.9 Percent

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has distanced itself from a message circulating on WhatsApp offering Independence Day Econet 10GB free data.
In a statement released this Monday, Econet said the “promotion” did not originate from them but was the work of scammers. It said:

Beware of scam WhatsApp chain messages claiming that we are giving away free Econet Data.
Please be advised that these posts are fake, and you should ignore them.
We will communicate through our official channels if we are running any promotions.

"Econet - Ericsson Partnership To Deliver High Network Connectivity In Zimbabwe"

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has strengthened its partnership with Ericsson as it embarks on a network upgrade to deliver 5G connectivity in more locations across Harare.
In a <a href="https://www.ericsson.com/en/press-releases/1/2023/econet-partners-ericsson-to-modernize-network-infrastructure-in-zimbabwe">Press release</a>, Ericsson said the partnership with Econet aims to boost digital transformation through the evolution of the existing network to cloud native architecture. It said:

Econet Partners Ericsson to Modernise Network Infrastructure Across Zimbabwe

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (EWZ) says recurrent power cuts have negatively affected the quality of services that the company offers.
The mobile network operator (MNO) says it will increase investment in alternative energy, such as solar batteries and diesel-powered generators though this requires significant amounts of foreign currency.
In a statement accompanying the firm’s trading update for the third quarter to November 2022, EWZ company secretary, Charles Banda said:

Due to the unreliable national power grid, the business continues to invest in alternative power solutions in a bid to ensure network availability.
As green energy solutions such as solar and battery storage require significant foreign currency investment, the pace of investment has remained below desired levels, thereby impacting service quality.
The business has also had to continue investing in diesel engine generators in the face of sharp declines in available grid power.
</blockquote>
Most base stations (boosters) run on electricity but of late, MNOs have been forced to rely on diesel generators due to load-shedding and this has increased the cost of doing business.

Load Shedding Affecting Network Availability - Econet

Two Harare men were on Wednesday sentenced to 10 years in jail for stealing Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) copper cables.
They were part of a four-member gang which included a 16-year-old, The Standard reported.
There was a separation of trial after Richard Dzinzi and Reward Sibanda pleaded guilty to the charge leading to their conviction and sentence. Reads the state outline:

The following accused persons were arrested for possession of 25 cut pieces of 3 core armoured cable in Westgate area; Sibanda (53) of 93 Engineering Highfields, Richard Dzinzi (35) of Turnleaf Farm Westgate, Amos Dzinzi (16) of Turnleaf Farm and Tafadzwa Phiri (27) of 497 Nehanda Ext RRB 5409688 Marlborough.

Phiri and Amos Dzinzi pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody until Tuesday for routine remand. 
The accused persons had no legal representation.
In October last year, the government gazetted the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-independent-complaints-commission-act-copper-control-amendment-act-gazetted/">Zimbabwe Independent Complaints Commission Act and the Copper Control Amendment Act [Chapter 10:34] (No. 5 of 2022)</a>, which introduced new, more severe penalties.
Organisations such as ZESA, TelOne, Econet, Telecel, NetOne, and the National Railways of Zimbabwe tell tales of loss of business due to the effects of copper cable theft that has been spreading uncontrolled.
Households too are affected as they are left to spend days without power and are sometimes asked to pull resources together for the purchase of copper cables.
It is suspected most of the stolen cables are being smuggled to South Africa and they are then shipped further to countries that use the metal in the construction and manufacturing industries.

Copper Cable Thieves Sentenced To 10 Years In Jail

Zimbabwe’s largest mobile network operator (MNO) by Subscriber Base, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has increased tariffs and bundle prices with effect from 1 January 2023.
In a public notice, Econet said the adjustment is to accommodate the 0.5 percent value-added tax (VAT) increase that came into effect on 1 January. Econet said:

Please take note that our tariffs &amp; bundle prices have been adjusted in line with VAT changes gazetted in the Finance Act (No.2), 2022 effective 1 Jan 2023.
</blockquote>
In his 2023 national budget statement, Finance and Economic Development Minister, Mthuli Ncube increased VAT from 14.5 percent to 15 percent.
Ncube said the country’s VAT rates of 15 percent are comparatively lower than the SADC regional standard VAT rate, which averages 16 percent.

Econet Increases Tariffs And Bundle Prices

South African National Defence Force members will be deployed at some Eskom power stations following several incidents of theft and sabotage at various power stations.
The presidency made this request to the defence ministry, <a href="https://www.enca.com/news/sandf-be-deployed-some-eskom-power-stations">eNCA News</a> reported citing Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.
The country has now been plunged into stage six power cuts.
Copper theft is not a phenomenon peculiar to South Africa as state companies and market players in Zimbabwe say the problem has surged in recent years.
It affects the electricity, telecommunications and transport sectors, and each year Zimbabwe’s parastatals spend millions of dollars replacing stolen cables and restoring vandalised infrastructure due to cable theft.

South Africa: Soldiers To Be Deployed At Some Eskom Power Stations

Econet Wireless, which is the country’s leading telecommunications company, says it will review voice, data and SMS prices in both Zimbabwe dollars and US dollars with effect from 16 November 2022.
In a notice to its customers issued this Monday, 14 November, Econet said:

Responding to social a media user who had asked why the telecoms company was increasing prices in USD considering that the greenback is a stable currency, Econet said:

Take note that the tariff adjustment is necessitated by the increased operational costs as we want to continue providing exceptional services.

On 1 November 2022, Econet increased its headline tariffs but did not adjust the cost of its promotional bundles.
Since the start of this month, Econet customers have been paying $41.77 per minute, to make a voice call, up from $25.95.
Data charges also went up to $6.6 per MB, up from $4.1 per MB, while sending an SMS was now costing $8.59 per message, up from $5.33.

Econet Wireless To Raise Tariffs Effective 16 November 2022

Econet Wireless, which is the country’s leading telecommunications company increased its headline tariffs effective from 1 November 2022.
The company, however, said the cost of its promotional bundles remains unchanged for now.
Econet customers will now pay $41.77 per minute, to make a voice call, up from $25.95.
Data charges have gone up to $6.6 per MB, up from $4.1 per MB, while sending an SMS will not cost $8.59 per message, up from $5.33.
Econet spokesman, Fungai Mandiveyi, told NewsDay that the new price review will help it to invest in the network and improve the quality of service to its customers. Said Mandiveyi:

Our aim is obviously to offer our valued customers an unparalleled customer experience. To do so, the right balance between affordability and quality of service is key.
The level of investment we make in upgrading our network infrastructure will improve network quality which will directly impact our customer experience.

Econet Raises Voice, SMS Tariffs, Cost Of Promotional Bundles Unchanged

Police in Kwekwe have arrested Romeo Rodgers Shava, who is alleged to be behind a series of copper cable theft cases in the town, following an ambush on one of his runners in Newton.
ZBC News reports that preliminary investigations reveal that an ambush laid by TelOne in the Newton area led to the arrest of 22-year-old Robert Mtetwa, who implicated Shava as his recruiter.
Mtetwa, who was apprehended while in the company of six others, five of whom are on the run, was handed over to Kwekwe CID for investigations.
He confessed to stealing TelOne copper cables along Burma Road in Kwekwe, two days before his arrest. He also showed detectives a place where they burnt the stolen cables.
Mtetwa also indicated that Shava would drop them at designated places to steal TelOne copper cables and they would call him to pick them up after cutting and pulling out the cables.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing TelOne copper cables and was remanded in custody for sentencing.
Meanwhile, Shava was dragged to Gokwe regional magistrate court facing two counts of stealing TelOne copper cables, but he denied the charges.
The magistrate remanded him in custody until the 29th of September. If found guilty of theft of TelOne cables or vandalism of TelOne infrastructure, he will be sentenced to a minimum jail term of 10 years.

Police Bust A Syndicate Targeting Copper Cables

A 31- year-old man has been slapped with a 10-year-jail term by a Harare court after being convicted of stealing ZESA copper cables.
Pikitai Makucha who was found in possession of ZESA cables was handed the minimum mandatory sentence for contravening the Electricity Act.
In passing the sentence, the magistrate noted that cases of vandalism of power infrastructure are on the increase, hence the need to send the right message to would-be offenders.
Makucha was convicted after a full trial, <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/man-jailed-10-years-for-zesa-cables-theft/">ZBC News</a> reports.

Man Jailed For 10 Years For Stealing ZESA Copper Cables

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (EWZ) says its customer subscriber base has hit 14.9 million, up from 13.2 million in the previous year.
This was revealed by EWZ chief executive officer, Douglas Mboweni as he presented the Integrated Annual Report for the year 2022 this week. He said:

We maintained customer market share leadership as we focused on addressing customers’ pain points.
During the period, we added 1.7 million new customers to stand at 14.9 million customers, up from 13.2 million in the previous year.

According to the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) 4th Quarter Report of 2021, Econet’s market share of mobile subscribers closed at 64.9%.
The company’s market share of internet and data traffic was at 75.9%, up from 74.1% the previous quarter, the POTRAZ report showed.
During the period, Voice traffic increased by 17%, data consumption was up 48% whilst SMS traffic was down 19% compared to the same period last year.
Econet said Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) improved by 14% in 2022 from 64% to 73% due to improved data connectivity through the commissioning of 120 LTE core-located sites across the country.
Going forward, the company said its focus will be on deploying new network technology and enhancing the digital lives of Small to Medium Enterprises, the government and its business-to-consumer (B2C).

Econet Subscriber Base Hits 14.9 Million

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has handed over eight residential stands and eight 2 Kilovolts solar systems to the winners of its Christmas Promotion, which started in December 2021 and ended in March this year.
The 16 winners of the “IKhisimusi Sifikile, Kisimusi Yatosvika” Christmas Promotion received their prizes at a ceremony in Harare last week.
The winners of the eight residential stands are Emmanuel Zvada, Crispen Kaipa, Jonah Liberty Muchayi, Sarudzayi Chayambuka, Givemore Mandizha, Tungamirai Kwashirai, Francis Kudzaishe Mambanje and Tarubuda Makuvaza. The stands, worth a total of over US$108 000 (ZW$43.2 million), are all located in Harare.
The winners of the solar systems, worth a combined US$47 300 (ZW$18.9 million) are Shadreck Chiwanza, Nomore Marota, Magdalene Mushanawani, Albertina Ruvimbo Chopera, Tinotenda Tsingano, Goriath Kahlulani, Mtshumaeli Siziba and Tinashe Nyamanhindi.
To qualify for the grand draw, customers were required to recharge their phones with at least ZW$250 per week during the period of the promotional.
The more a customer recharged, the more they enhanced their chances of winning.

Econet Hands Over Residential Stands To Promotion Winners

Telecommunications giant Econet Wireless Saturday won the award for the best overall stand at this year’s Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) for its ultra-modern exhibition stand, which drew huge crowds.
The top award, called the ‘President’s Award for the Premier Zimbabwean Exhibit at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair’, was won by Econet at this year’s Trade Fair which was attended by over 500 direct exhibitors from 14 countries. 
Econet CEO Dr Douglas Mboweni expressed his gratitude for the award, which was handed to the company’s representatives by President Mnangagwa, at the official opening ceremony of the ZITF Saturday. He said:

We are grateful that Econet has won this award in the face of serious and well respected competition among this year’s exhibitors, some of whom would have been worthy winners of the award.

He added that Econet dedicates the award to “our customers, whose support we never take for granted and without whom we would not be where we are today as a business”.

Dr Mboweni said Econet, which has consistently participated at the ZITF over the years, was committed to continuing to invest in the country’s telecoms infrastructure and technology in order to improve the customer experience and help the country become a competitive digital economy in the shortest possible time. 
Econet’s general manager for marketing, Mrs Tariro Muchena, who received the award along with some Econet colleagues, said the recognition is a motivation for the company to do even more to continuously improve the customer experience.

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe will on Thursday launch “Smart US Dollar bundles” that will allow its subscribers to buy airtime, data and SMS products in US dollars.
Fungai Mandiveyi, the company’s Media and Corporate Communications Executive said subscribers will be able to buy the smart bundles in denominations ranging from US$0.50 up to US$10. Said Mandiveyi:

Common sense should make you ask one question, when Econet cards were sold for US$100, how much were Telecel and Netone sim cards selling for?

Your money from high fuel prices to steep data prices is taken by Government of Zimbabwe high taxes because your government has failed to create a healthy tax base because of incompetence, looting, corruption, plunder and many other such ills!
So, the Government of Zimbabwe charges huge taxes to the few big businesses that are in existence like Econet. Deal with the reasons why you don’t have money, instead of expecting another man to take State created losses on your behalf!
You don’t have enough money because the economy is crap;
Is it Strive Masiyiwa who is refusing to implement political and economic reforms so that the economy can be kickstarted again?
Is it Strive who is looting your taxes and plundering your nation’s natural resources leaving you with nothing meaningful in your pocket?
Why were things ok between you and Econet during the years of 2009 and 2013?
It is called Economics folks, it has nothing to do with Strive Masiyiwa’s companies, they are also victims of an incompetent Government.

He has expanded the Econet coverage across the country using borrowed money, loans that must be paid back in US Dollars, yet we pay for Econet’s service in a useless untradeable RTGS currency, and the Government can’t give him US Dollars in exchange in order to pay repay the loans which have made it possible for you to get better coverage
Is that not the reason why you stay with Econet, good coverage?
You stay with his company because it is the better out of the three, and he has been able to stay afloat in difficult times regardless of the terrible operating conditions!

Hopewell Chin'ono Fights In Strive Masiyiwa's Corner

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says two suspected fraudsters have been arrested after duping several people of huge sums of money.
In a post on their Twitter page, police confirmed the arrest of Leeman Mushayi (26) and Prince Kadzungwe (41) on fraud allegations after the duo fraudulently applied for a sim card replacement using someone’s number and then committing various offences using the sim card. Police said:

The suspects approached an Econet shop and fraudulently applied for a sim-card replacement on the complainant’s number before restoring her WhatsApp and advertising on groups purporting that she was dealing in foreign currency.
Several victims were enchanted with the good rates and were defrauded various amounts. Meanwhile, Police appeals to complainants duped in a similar manner by suspects to come forward and report.</blockquote>

Police said Ncube duped several victims after purporting to be able to facilitate their issuance of travel documents and national identity documents. He demanded various amounts of cash in United States Dollars for his non-existent services.

Econet Wireless, Zimbabwe’s largest mobile network operator (MNO), has notified its subscribers of a price review on its voice, data and SMS promotional bundles with effect from 10 March 2021. The company said in a public notice:

Econet To Review Data Bundle Prices On 10 March

High Court judge Justice David Mangota has granted a provisional order against telecommunications giant Econet Wireless Zimbabwe to stop sending COVID-19 alert messages to a subscriber, Harare lawyer Sikhumbuzo Moyo.
Moyo had filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court seeking to block Econet from sending the messages through his mobile phone, saying the messages irritated him and violated his constitutional rights. Moyo had said:
<blockquote>Despite my attempt to avoid mental torment, Econet slides in my messages and makes sure every day is a day of reflection on the death and possible deaths around the subject.
On January 8, I started receiving messages from unknown numbers. I don’t have this contact in my contacts list; it appears on its messages as COVID-19ZIM.
There is no option to stop receipt of these messages as would be with other contacts.</blockquote>
In his ruling, Justice Mangota said Econet Wireless Zimbabwe’s failure to stop sending unsolicited messages to Moyo violated his constitutional right to free association. Said Justice Mangota:
<blockquote>It is declared that respondent’s action insofar as continued communication was made to the applicant of traumatising information, violated section 53 and section 57 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe (Amendment No 20 of 2013).
It is declared that the action of the respondent in unilaterally supplying applicant’s details to a service platform and or third party for transmission of information unrelated to service provision and transmission of uninvited information is a violation of the contractual relationship between the parties.</blockquote>

The Coronavirus changed ways of doing things. Some companies and individuals have resorted to working remotely, a setup that requires reliable, fast and secure internet connectivity. In this article, we compare and contrast Mobile Data, MIFI and Internet Service Provider (ISP) Wifi to help you gentle reader decide which type of data access is best for your needs.

Mifi is essentially a hotspot from your phone using another device that you insert a SIM card. A Mifi router is portable and can be used wherever there is internet coverage for the SIM card you have inside. Mifi devices come into play when you’d want to use a dedicated device that’s not a phone to create that hotspot. In terms of speed, it’s pretty much exactly like the normal network speeds of your mobile networks when connected to the internet. For instance, the Econet or NetOne or Telecel 4G speeds you get in your phone are what you get when using the same line in a Mifi device.
Mobile data
This is just an internet connection that uses a SIM card from a network. Without hotspots or Mifi, mobile data is only accessible by you through your phone. NetOne and Econet have the widest coverage compared to their counterparts.
Wifi
This is mainly a fixed internet connection so you can only use it in one location like at home or office, unlike the Mifi where you can move around with the connection since it uses mobile networks. Wifi speeds are generally better than mobile data (which is used by Mifi).
What’s better – Mifi, Mobile Data, Wifi?
The answer depends on what your needs are.
<ul>
<li>Mifi is best where you can’t get fixed WiFi but want to have a shared internet connection.</li>
<li>Where you can’t get fixed WiFi and you live alone, a Mifi device may not be necessary because you can just use your phone to create a hotspot. However, your phone may also not be ideal when it accepts one SIM card when you want to simultaneously use two, let’s say NetOne and Econet, one for data and another for other things. Getting a MiFi device would make sense.</li>
<li>WiFi is best where there is a fixed connection, where speeds are good and you can afford the setup and packages. Speeds and fees differ between providers, for example, TelOne is cheaper than ZOLspot while ZOL is generally faster than TelOne, but those things can change.</li>
<li>In terms of price, WiFi is more expensive than mobile data (which includes Mifi).</li>
<li>WiFi is faster than mobile data. Mobile Network operators have varying speeds due to a number of reasons. There are a number of <a href="https://www.speedcheck.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">internet speed testing sites which include SpeedCheck.</a> An internet speed test measures the connection speed and quality of your connected device to the internet.</li>
</ul>
In some countries, however, there are new players, <a href="https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/wireless-network/5g-technology/5g-vs-wifi.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">5G and Wi-Fi 6, complementary technologies,</a> that provide higher speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity over their predecessors. As with LTE, mobile carriers will offer subscriptions to their 5G network, which requires 5G-capable devices.
While anyone can operate a Wi-Fi network, Wi-Fi 6 devices require a Wi-Fi 6‒compliant access point to get the full speed, latency, and capacity improvements.

Lockdown Time: Mobile Data, MiFi Or ISP WiFi - Which Is Best?

Stanbic Bank has zero-rated its platform which includes:

</ol>
The zero-rating means the bank’s customers who are Econet subscribers will be able to access these platforms without Econet deducting their data for accessing Stanbic Platforms or they do not need to have data to access the platforms listed above whenever they want to access them.
In an email to Pindula, the bank said they reached the decision to zero-rate the platforms because they have realized data is becoming expensive and they decided to bridge the gap and came up with the solution to zero-rate their platforms.
Stanbic Bank Head of Personal and Business Banking, Patson Mahatchi said:
<blockquote>Customer centricity is of utmost importance to our business and in keeping with this key pillar, we have seen it fit to ensure that our customers are able to access essential services on our digital banking platforms at no data costs. Therefore, we now subsidize the internet service.
This move also demonstrates our dedication to becoming a digital bank and how we are focused on ensuring that our customers get the services as conveniently as possible, and we continue to encourage our customers to embrace digital banking platforms</blockquote>
Mahatchi also said they are still working with other Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to ensure that they can make zero-rate their service for their customers who are not Econet Subscribers.

Stanbic Zero Rates Apps, Website For Clients Who Use Econet

The 14th edition of the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon that was held virtually in various cities across the world on Sunday has been described as a great success by event organisers and athletes.
This was the first time since 2006 that the marathon – now one of Africa’s top sporting events – was held virtually, as runners complied with social distancing measures in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Organisers of the event, which is believed to have attracted 5 000 runners from across 60 countries around the world, said they were overwhelmed by the response at a time other major sporting events have either been cancelled or moved to 2021 due to COVID-19. Race director John Addington said:

Econet has over the past six years supported the popular annual event and this year had to bend over backwards to ensure the marathon – traditionally held in June – continued despite the effects of the pandemic.
Econet not only delivered the sporting kits to locally registered runners, the digital lifestyle network also awarded the first 1 000 registered runners with smartwatches, trainers, running pouches and water bottles. 33-year-old Munyaradzi Philemon Tagwireyi, an athlete from Cartel Runmates said:

Tagwirei said his team was grateful to Econet, for providing support from registration, regalia distribution and attending to various pre-registration queries.
Makanaka Msipa, 22, from Harare, could not hide her excitement after she participated in the historic virtual marathon. She said:

I felt the physical presence of other athletes when I checked the leader board and I saw one leading with 3.5kms. At one point I felt like giving up, then realised I wasn’t the only one competing, and this gave me hope and new strength.

Blessed Simbarashe Marima, 24, from Makoni district in Manicaland said he was looking forward to the final results. He said:

This was my first time to participate in the marathon and I finished the 21km race within 2 hours and 18 minutes. I am eager to get the results soon because I am confident that I was one of the best runners of the day.

Meanwhile, Addington said his organisation was still collating the data from those who participated and uploaded their finishing time and will be announcing the marathon winners and prizes in the coming weeks. He said:

‘Econet Victoria Falls Marathon A Great Success’ – Organizers, Athletes

The virtual Econet Victoria Falls Marathon kicked off on Saturday 12 December 2020 in numerous cities across Africa and the world.
Organizers say this year’s historic event, which is being held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions, is expected to attract more than 5 000 athletes from Zimbabwe and over 60 countries.
Race Director John Addison said the race this year could not have been possible without the generous support of the main sponsor, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, which he said was critical in organising running gear and various prizes for the first 1 000 to register, among other things. He said:

This is an incredible shout out to our main sponsor Econet, and also all the other sponsors who committed to this event.
Hopefully, these over 5 000 participants will turn into growth in tourism and the economy, both in the Vic Falls and the region, and help take us all into a post-COVID-19 future in 2021.

Addison said his organisation was also incredibly proud of the money they have raised through a number of participants via the GivenGain platform, for the company’s four charities as well as through the percentage contribution from each of the runners’ entry fees. Addison added:

Through these initiatives, we have managed to bring in just under US$3 000 so far. This is also a reminder though that people can continue to donate till the end of December. Let this be the season of giving.

Both local and international runners are participating in three categories of the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, which are a full 42km marathon, a 21km half-marathon and the popular 7,5km family fun run. Runners will be using their favourite routes from wherever they are.
After completing the race, athletes record the finishing time and upload it on the race website to get certificates of participation, which they can print out.
Econet Wireless Chief Executive Officer Dr Douglas Mboweni said he was happy his company was continuing to put Zimbabwe on the world map by sponsoring this historic event. He said:

Econet Vic Falls Marathon Kicks Off

Econet has partnered with the Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH), an African community investment company, on a mega solar development deal that is premised at boosting solar power generation in some African countries.
RBH will invest up to US$20 million through Distributed Power Africa (DPA), Econet’s solar energy subsidiary in a deal that is expected to develop up to 175MW of solar energy assets in selected African countries.
The selected countries are South Africa, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Zambia. A joint statement by RBH and DPA read in part:
<blockquote>The partnership comes at an opportune time when the South African Government is encouraging investment in renewable energy and will accelerate the much-needed 6.8GW energy capacity, as outlined in the Integrated Resource Plan of 2019.</blockquote>
Commenting on the deal, DPA Africa chief executive officer, Mr Norman Moyo, and his RBH counterpart, Albertina Kekana expressed optimism on the deal which they described as an opportunity to enhance energy as a key enabler for the growth of sustainable data centres.
The development comes when Zimbabwe like the rest of the Southern African region have acute power issues that have been clearly pronounced in the past two years.
Zimbabwe encourages the adoption of solar energy and other clean power as an alternative to electricity and also as a strategy to lessen pressure on the national grid.
Power outages have worsened the deteriorating state of affairs in many African countries and particularly so in Zimbabwe where the issue has been severe.
