Human rights advocate Zvaringeni Samuel Chasi has called on the Commonwealth to postpone Zimbabwe’s readmission until the country demonstrates a genuine commitment to upholding human rights and democratic principles.
In an open letter addressed to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Chasi urged the organisation to defer Zimbabwe’s application to rejoin the Commonwealth.
He argued that the ZANU-PF-led government has consistently dismantled key pillars of democratic governance to maintain its grip on power.
Chasi cited the November 2017 military coup, carried out under the banner of “Operation Restore Legacy”, which removed long-time leader Robert Mugabe and installed Emmerson Mnangagwa as president.
He said the takeover blatantly violated both the 2013 Constitution of Zimbabwe and the ruling party’s own constitution.
He also raised concerns over repeated public statements by senior military officials, who have declared they would not recognise or salute any political leader who lacks liberation war credentials. This, he argued, is a direct affront to democratic norms and the principle of civilian leadership.
Chasi further argued that Zimbabwe has repeatedly failed to meet the standards for free and fair elections, as outlined in international charters, including the United Nations Charter.
He referenced reports from observer missions representing the Commonwealth, African Union, European Union, and SADC, which have documented widespread electoral irregularities, ranging from 23 to 70 percent in recent elections.
These irregularities include acts of violence, enforced disappearances, missing ballots, “ghost” polling stations, and office raids, all occurring in an environment he described as deeply autocratic and lacking in transparency.
He also condemned the enactment of repressive legislation, including the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (2019), the Patriotic Act (2023), and the Cyber and Data Protection Act, arguing that such laws are used to stifle dissent and silence opposition voices.
Chasi asserted that the Commonwealth should not compromise its founding values by readmitting Zimbabwe prematurely, and should instead wait for demonstrable reforms and a clear respect for democratic principles and human rights. He wrote:

Chasi said before Zimbabwe can be readmitted to the Commonwealth, civilian governance must be fully restored, and all electoral processes, including voter registration, the voters’ roll, delimitation, the nomination court, and ballot printing, must be conducted transparently. He said:

The Septuagenarian Senate reintroduced in 2005 from 1989 to delay impeachment process must be abolished including the disbandment of harmonized elections with an inclusivity to promote quotas for women, youth and PWD’s quota for fair candidacy.

Chasi also argued that the key to fostering non-partisan and inclusive governance lies in the implementation of independent reforms across critical sectors, including the media, health, education, and security services. He added:

There should be an overhaul of laws from the appointment of Service Chiefs and Director of Intelligence Services to ensure transparency with public interviews and retraining of personnel with rehabilitation of colonial courses to integration with diploma/degree international standard protocols.

Chasi also intimated that the National Youth Service training programme and the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology should be disbanded, criticising their extension into schools through the compulsory recitation of national pledges.
He argued that these practices reflect the ideology of a de facto one-party state and constitute a violation of Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which upholds the right to education free from political indoctrination.

Blessed Runesu Geza, a former liberation war fighter and expelled ZANU-PF Central Committee member, has twice tried to remove President Emmerson Mnangagwa from power.
His first effort involved a planned march on March 31, followed by a call for an indefinite national shutdown starting April 21.
However, both actions failed to gain traction, exposing weaknesses in strategy, mobilisation, and public perception.
GEZA’S ALLEGATIONS AGAINST MNANGAGWA
Geza has levelled serious accusations against Mnangagwa, branding him corrupt, power-hungry, and selfish. In a bold interview, he declared, “He wants to eat alone. I also want to eat. I want bodyguards. I’m not a political condom.”
This explosive language underscored his frustration at being sidelined and his view that Mnangagwa has consolidated power solely for personal gain. Geza’s primary concern is the suspected plot by Mnangagwa and his allies to extend his rule beyond the 2028 constitutional limit.
Mnangagwa’s declaration, “2030 ndeendichipo,” raised eyebrows, while his Information Minister, Dr. Jenfan Muswere, suggested potential constitutional amendments to allow more than two terms.
Furthermore, ZANU-PF’s provincial structures have already endorsed Mnangagwa as the party’s future candidate. Although the president later stated he respects term limits, his opponents remain unconvinced.
WHY GEZA FAILED
Geza’s efforts to topple Mnangagwa did not fail because the grievances lacked merit, but because of fundamental issues with execution, strategy, and context. Below is a critical breakdown:
1. A Recycled Script with No Surprise Element
Geza’s approach mirrors the 2017 strategy that led to Mugabe’s ouster. That plan relied heavily on public pressure and behind-the-scenes military coordination. However, Mnangagwa, having lived through and possibly designed that playbook, is now better prepared to counter any similar attempt. He reshuffled his cabinet to weaken potential dissenters, especially within the security sector, appointing loyalists in key ministries. This has likely closed the door on any possibility of a ‘palace coup’ or military-backed protest. Geza underestimated the regime’s defensive posture.
2. Bread-and-Butter Realities of Zimbabweans
Zimbabwe’s economic environment is deeply harsh. The average citizen lives hand-to-mouth. Vendors, taxi drivers, and civil servants can’t afford to stay home for a political cause that has no clear outcome. Missing a day of work means missing a day of food. Geza’s shutdown demanded a level of sacrifice that few could afford, especially with no support structures in place to cushion the impact. Unlike 2016’s #ThisFlag campaign or the 2019 fuel protests, there was no galvanising moment to unify suffering into action.
3. No Alternative Plan Beyond the Shutdown
Even if the shutdown had gained traction, Geza offered no roadmap. What happens after the shutdown? Would he call for negotiations, or was he relying solely on pressure? The absence of a visible, practical plan made his movement appear amateurish. A well-executed movement requires layers—political, legal, diplomatic, and grassroots coordination. Geza’s strategy was a one-trick pony, devoid of meaningful political infrastructure.
4. Lack of Broad Political Consensus
No major political player backed Geza. Nelson Chamisa, arguably the most influential opposition figure, kept his distance. This wasn’t just political caution—it was strategic. Chamisa likely saw the flaws and potential for co-optation. Without coalition-building, even the most righteous of causes becomes marginal. Geza’s movement appeared individualistic, lacking both national appeal and unity of purpose. The absence of civic society, churches, and labour unions in his corner left his cause hollow.
5. No Trigger Event—The ‘Sarajevo Moment’
Movements often need a flashpoint—something visceral and immediate. In 2019, it was fuel hikes. In Tunisia’s Arab Spring, it was a vendor’s self-immolation. Geza’s protests lacked urgency. People have slowly adjusted to suffering in Zimbabwe; inflation, taxes, and corruption are now normalised. His timing was poor. If the shutdown had come right after painful tax policies or new salary cuts, the outcome may have been different. Instead, he mobilised against the abstract idea of extended term limits—important but not immediately painful.
CONCLUSION
Geza’s mission is not without merit. The issues he raises—entrenchment of power, constitutional violations, and corruption—resonate widely. However, political change requires more than grievances. It requires strategy, legitimacy, timing, and above all, the people. Until Geza refines his approach, broadens his appeal, and presents a credible national agenda, his efforts will remain symbolic rather than catalytic. As it stands, he remains a lone voice shouting in a storm.

Geza, a former fighter, tried to remove President Mnangagwa twice but failed. Geza accuses Mnangagwa of being corrupt and power-hungry. Mnangagwa wants to extend his rule beyond the limit. Geza failed because his plan was not surprising, people couldn't afford to protest, he had no clear plan, no major political player supported him, and there was no trigger event. Geza's mission is important, but he needs a better strategy and more support. As of now, he remains a lone voice in the storm.

Geza's Failed Attempts To Unseat Mnangagwa: A Deeper Look

Zimbabwe’s former finance minister, Tendai Biti, described Statutory Instrument 81A of 2024, which had prohibited retailers from charging more than 5% above the official exchange rate, as a “toxic” policy aimed at artificially fixing the exchange rate and protecting a failing local currency.
This follows the government’s introduction of Statutory Instrument 34 of 2025 on Wednesday, April 16, which gives businesses greater pricing flexibility by removing the requirement to use the official exchange rate.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Biti said the fixed exchange rate had caused significant damage, including arbitrage (profiting from the gap between official and market exchange rates), the expansion of the informal economy, and capital flight. Said Biti

The fixed exchange rate has led to massive de industrialization &amp; capital flight from Zim. Yet at the same time it has allowed ZANU cronies &amp; cartels to loot.

He said that while the general public suffered, politically connected individuals benefited, enriching themselves through access to cheap foreign currency.
Biti called the Reserve Bank a “crime scene”, accusing it of allowing politically connected people to get cheap U.S. dollars at an unrealistic official exchange rate, and slammed the Dutch Auction System (introduced in 2020), saying it was a scam. He said:

The now disbanded Dutch Auction system introduced in June of 2020 was one of the biggest all time scams in post independent Zim. 
US$4.08 billion was disbursed &amp;yet the country has nothing to show of it except mansions &amp; Bentleys in Shawasha Hills. 
SI 81A should never have been enacted. Its repeal is neither progress nor a damascene moment.

Biti proposed a clear, bold economic direction which guarantees the use of the U.S. dollar beyond 2030, and allow the new currency (ZIG) to float freely, not be pegged. He said:

In our view there must be unequivocal guarantees that the US$ will exist beyond 2030, ZIG must be floated and Export Surrender Requirements scrapped.
The regime must stop printing money &amp; live within its means The debt question must be addressed urgently&amp; corruption must stop.

Biti said ZANU-PF is incapable of fixing the economy, accusing the party of being more focused on internal power struggles, obsessed with retaining power, and suppressing citizens and dissent.
He called for a “new consensus” and “a new beginning,” though he did not provide details on what that would entail.

Former finance minister of Zimbabwe, Tendai Biti, criticized a policy that fixed the exchange rate and protected a failing currency. The government repealed this policy, allowing businesses more pricing freedom. Biti said the fixed rate caused harm by promoting illegal activities and hurting the economy. “Damage Has Been Done”: Biti On Repealing Of Controversial SI 81A Of 2024

Award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has warned Zimbabweans that ZANU PF will win the 2028 general elections with ease “if things remain the way they are.”
Chin’ono was commenting on the victory of Tsitsi Tranquility Tawomhera, the ZANU PF candidate who won the Glen View South by-election held on Saturday, April 12.
Tawomhera secured 3,404 votes, defeating three independent candidates — Toenderai Chakaredza (993 votes), George Makwangwaidze (681), and Tungamirai Madzokere (234) — as well as National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) candidate Perpetua Mukanda, who garnered just 77 votes. There were 44 rejected ballots.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Chin’ono said opposition politics in Zimbabwe is driven by personalities rather than ideas and a unified cause — a situation he believes enables ZANU PF to grow stronger. Wrote Chin’ono:

ZANUPF will be in power with a huge majority post 2028 if things remain the way they are. Reality does not hero-worship personalities—it favours common sense.
The reality of politics is that if it is hinged on personalities rather than ideas and a cause, the regime becomes stronger because it either buys or immobilises those personalities.
The MDC survived as long as it did because Morgan Tsvangirai, for the most part, was not threatened by those more educated or more talented than him—he was secure. The pastor is not.
Tsvangirai understood the importance of structures and of allowing leaders at various levels to be independent and strong.
What you saw in Glen View is the beginning of the total end of the 1999 project.
Reality cannot be pushed back with insults or abusive language. 
The current opposition leaders are the best thing that has ever happened to ZANUPF.
Why would you not want people who are hero-worshipped yet do nothing—who cannot even speak-out about corruption or draconian laws against the citizens?
Whenever you see infighting in ZANUPF, it means there is no opposition to speak of. We are in the worst period Zimbabwe has experienced since 1999. The citizens must be told the truth; 2028 is gone save for a miracle!
The opposition’s emphasis on personalities rather than ideas and causes is a recurring issue that has weakened the opposition and strengthened the regime.
The lack of a clear and consistent message from the opposition on critical issues like corruption and draconian laws is a reflection of a failed leadership.
Zimbabweans deserve better, but if they are happy with the leadership that they have in the leadership, then they deserve what they are getting.
It is strange that you have adults who defend the mediocrity of their leaders, it is mind boggling as it is sad to watch! It is like watching a man self harm yet you can’t do anything about it!

Chin’ono Predicts Easy ZANU PF Win In 2028 If Status Quo Remains

Former ZANU PF Mashonaland West Provincial Chairman, Temba Mliswa, has dismissed claims that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is frail and in poor health.
The remarks come after a video from Mnangagwa’s speech at the official opening of the 3rd Africa Education Summit 2025 in Victoria Falls went viral on social media. 
In the video, Mnangagwa can be seen making wartime jokes and humorous gestures while speaking in Shona, leaving some foreign delegates in the audience visibly puzzled.
Following the viral clip, Jealousy Mawarire accused those close to Mnangagwa of exploiting him, urging him to stay in office instead of advising him to step down and rest. 
Hopewell Chin’ono also chimed in, suggesting that if the President had genuine supporters, they would not allow him to continue in this manner.
In response to these claims, Mliswa took to X, asserting that Mnangagwa is neither frail nor sickly, and remains as sharp as ever for his age. Wrote Mliswa:

In the aftermath of Geza’s uprising fizzling out like a wet firecracker, many hopefuls have resorted to spinning tales of a frail &amp; sickly President. Let me clear the air: those whispers couldn’t be further from reality. The man remains as sharp as ever for his age.
You can’t just fabricate a narrative &amp; genuinely expect it to take root. While differing views are a staple of democracy, it’s far more constructive to strengthen your party or candidacy than undermining an elected leader with fabrications, hoping we will buy into the fiction.
I had the chance to see the President up close at a recent vaMhari event at his farm. He was lively, even dancing to some traditional tunes—definitely not the behavior of someone who is frail and ill.
I’ve never been one for sycophancy, even back in my MP days; my critiques of Gvt have always been aimed at progress. The difference is that those who see my stance as bootlicking thrive on vitriol and insult. I don’t practice such politics against anyone.
This whole narrative painting the President as sick is just that: an insult lacking any substance. Recently, at the Education conference in Vic Falls, he cracked a joke that actually tied into the broader context of his speech.
Yet, those who were absent trimmed the video &amp; turned it into “proof” of his incompetence. Seriously, who does that? For those of us in attendance, including foreign guests, the point was crystal clear, and it had nothing to do with any sort of amateur psychological evaluation.
You can’t cherry-pick scripture from the Bible to suit your agenda, just as you can’t splice up a video, eviscerating the context &amp; claim it proves something that isn’t there. The President is aware of his state, which is why he has floated the idea of stepping down in 2028.
Spinning a false narrative won’t speed his departure; savvy political minds should focus on building genuine grassroots support. Get out there, engage with communities, &amp; prepare for the ballot in 2028, instead of lurking on social media telling each other comforting lies.
The opposition has been caught in this trap for years, blissfully convincing themselves that the 180,000 people on X represent the entire nation. Come election time, reality hits them hard. Right now, as someone famously put it, the opposition is “dead as a dodo.”
For those abroad, stop resting on the laurels of misinformation about the President being ill; make plans to come back and vote. Surviving on politics steeped in deception and empty promises won’t get you anywhere. Forge your own path.

He also challenges the opposition to stop believing in false information and start making real plans for the future. Mliswa says Mnangagwa knows when to step down and people should not spread rumors about his health.

Mliswa Says Mnangagwa Sharp As Ever After Viral Speech

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti has rejected ZANU PF’s push to amend the Constitution to allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to serve beyond 2028, when his current and final term in office ends.
Biti, who has held key positions in the once-vibrant opposition MDC party, does not believe in an uprising or unconstitutional change in government, but in peaceful democratic change in Zimbabwe.
He said the country is on a knife-edge and called for national dialogue and the establishment of a National Transitional Authority for a lasting solution to the problems bedeviling the country. Said Biti:

We restate for the record that we stand on the broad and principled position of constitutionalism and the rule of law.
We stand on the unquestionable aspiration to achieve peaceful democratic change in Zimbabwe. We stand on the mission of transformation and the establishment of a just modern transparent accountable equitable green and prosperous Zimbabwe.
Over the years we have pursued with vigor this dream of a New Zimbabwe. We have defended the constitution and human rights.
From the potholed lanes of the UZ to lavish chambers of the Constitutional Court, we have fought for a new Zimbabwe in the streets, in parliament, in villages, in television screens and in tons of literature.
We have been tortured imprisoned detained deported defamed and abused. But we remain firm and principled.
We draw the line on attempts to mutilate and scandalize the constitution. We are totally opposed to the Third Term agenda and it’s cousin Agenda 2030.We make no apology for this/
We firmly believe that this an agenda spurned by corruption and the need to protect lucre loot and ill begotten sachets.

Biti also strongly opposed ZANU PF’s Harare Province’s recent recommendation to appoint Kudakwashe Tagwirei to the party’s Central Committee.
War veteran Blessed Geza claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his wife, Auxillia, are planning to elevate Tagwirei to the presidency. Said Biti:

We therefore stand firmly against cartels bandits charlatans and brigands who have been looting Zimbabwe for decades.
We object to dangerous attempts to elevate some of these looters into the country’s corridors of power. We are not members of ZANU PF. We refuse to be drawn into their endless toxic factions and power struggles.

Biti also criticized former War Veterans Minister Christopher Mutsvangwa, who currently serves as ZANU PF’s spokesperson. Said Biti:

We take great exception to the drunken malicious and ill thought ramblings of the liberation pretender masquerading as their spokesperson. We ask him to come clean on his commercial interests in Manhize and other projects.
Finally we restate that the country is on a knifeedge. One created by structural economic mismanagement and the flawed 2030 Agenda.
Only Dialogue and the establishment of a National Transitional Authority can offer a lasting solution to our country. Wananchi have suffered long enough.

Biti believes only talking and setting up a National Transitional Authority can solve Zimbabwe's problems. He thinks the country has suffered too much and needs a change.

Biti Rejects Agenda 2030, Calls For National Dialogue

Former Mt Pleasant MP, Fadzayi Mahere (CCC), has criticized the government for its harsh and often violent responses to opposition protests, highlighting the frequent use of abductions, torture, and arrests on false charges, particularly when the protests are linked to former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa.
She pointed out that while the government has historically cracked down on opposition members and activists, no such actions have been taken against people from the ruling party, even when they call for unrest.
Mahere’s comments after on March 31, former ZANU PF Central Committee member and war veteran Blessed Geza, along with some other war veterans, called for an “uprising,” but none of the instigators have been arrested.
Mahere cited several cases where opposition figures, particularly those linked to Chamisa, have been arrested, tortured, or jailed without trial after being suspected of organising protests. She wrote on X:
There’s an unpopular truth that’s missing in the discourse. If the main opposition had organised a protest, key actors would have been abducted and tortured well ahead of the protests.
Any convenors would have been arrested on bogus charges. CIO agents would have been stalking people’s cars. They would have remained in jail for hundreds of days with no bail.
The whole reason Jameson Timba and over 70 others were tortured and arrested is because the regime thought they were planning a protest ahead of the SADC Summit.
Amos Chibaya with a number of opposition members has very recently been wrongly convicted because of a meeting held in Budiriro where the regime thought a protest was being planned.
Job Sikhala was arrested and detained for over 500 days because they thought he was planning a demonstration in Nyatsime in response to Moreblessing Ali’s gruesome murder.
Takudzwa Ngadziore was abducted on his way to Parliament because they thought he was mobilising young people to demonstrate.
The “MDC Trio”, that is, Joana Mamombe Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova were abducted, tortured and sexually assaulted because they were part of a hunger protest.
Womberraiishe Nhende was abducted and tortured because the regime believed a protest was in the works and he was a key mobilizer.
I could go as there are numerous examples of this.
While there may have been police on the streets yesterday, we did not see the usual arbitrary arrests, beatings, torture, abductions and prolonged illegal detentions we normally see when the opposition plans or is thought to be planning a protest.
There is something that hits different when people aligned to Nelson Chamisa plan any protests against the mass poverty, injustice and corruption of ZANU PF.
We need new leaders.

Mahere Slams Government’s Double Standards In Responding To Protests

Ndavaningi “Nick” Mangwana, the Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, has said the government should regulate churches due to the rise of religious scams disguised as Christianity.
Mangwana, who has openly declared that he is not religious, argued that while religion is intended to provide comfort, guidance, and a sense of community, some churches in Zimbabwe have strayed from these noble principles. He said:

[Churches] have become breeding grounds for political pronouncements aimed at causing instability, child marriages, sexual deviance, financial abuse, and cultist behaviour.
The recent events at Madzibaba Ishmael’s farm, where cultist behaviour was on full display, are a stark reminder of the dangers of unregulated religious practices.
The sight of individuals being coerced into parting with their hard-earned cash, or worse still, their children, is a clear indication that something is amiss.
It is alarming to note that anyone can simply wake up one morning, find a rock in the bush, declare it a shrine, plant a banner, and voilà! A new church is born.

Mangwana asserted that there is a lack of accountability and oversight in the establishment of churches in Zimbabwe, creating an environment where charlatans and con artists can pose as men and women of God, exploiting the vulnerable and gullible. He said:

It is imperative that we take a closer look at the regulation of churches in Zimbabwe.
We cannot continue to allow religion to be used as a cloak for nefarious activities.
The time has come for us to demand greater accountability and transparency from our religious leaders.

Mangwana further argued that regulating churches, especially the new evangelical, apostolic, and Pentecostal movements, is essential to ensure transparency and accountability. He said:

These churches often have a charismatic leader who is revered as a spiritual authority, and sometimes even as a demi-god. 
This can create a power dynamic where the leader has absolute control over the church’s finances, operations, and members.
Often this comes with some nepotistic succession plan, where gifts and callings are sexually transmitted. Husband professes the gift of prophecy and presto, wife is now a prophetess!
The whole financial matrix becomes opaque and nobody but those belonging to this family will be anywhere near the purse strings.
Without regulation, it can be challenging to track the flow of funds, identify potential financial mismanagement, and protect members from exploitation.

Mangwana suggested that to regulate churches effectively, the government needs to create a clear framework that addresses the specific characteristics of new evangelical, Mapostori, and Pentecostal movements. 
This could include requirements like financial transparency, such as submitting audited accounts and detailed budgets.
He also proposed that the government establish guidelines for church governance, including the creation of independent boards or oversight committees to prevent the church from being controlled solely by its founder or leader.
Mangwana pointed out that in countries like South Africa, Kenya, the UK, and Australia, churches are regulated. 
For example, in South Africa, churches must register with the National Register of Non-Profit Organisations, submitting financial statements, constitutions, and other documents. Registered churches must also follow accounting and auditing standards.
In Zimbabwe, Mangwana recommended that churches register with relevant authorities, such as the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) and the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, as a step toward improving transparency and accountability.
 Churches should be required to submit their constitutions, financial reports, lists of office bearers, and governance systems. 
He also posited that leaders should undergo vetting to ensure they have no history of financial misconduct or sexual offences, arguing that such people should not be allowed near the pulpit.

Former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa expressed his deep concern over Zimbabwe’s crippling brain drain, which has seen the country lose its brightest minds to foreign economies over the past two decades.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Chamisa revealed that he receives daily calls from professionals who are planning to leave Zimbabwe in search of better opportunities, a trend that has serious implications for the country’s economic development. He wrote:

Just this morning, I received four different calls from some professionals, all planning on leaving the country to seek opportunities in other countries.
My daily agony is waking up every day to the lived nightmare of receiving yet another call from a fellow Zimbabwean desperate to leave the country searching for what is believed to be greener pastures. This is a story I have experienced repeatedly for the past 20 years.
Often, these calls are not just conversations they are pleas for assistance and requests for guidance on finding a way to exit and escape to a perceived better life and future.
The sheer scale of brain drain we are experiencing is staggering. As a nation, we are hemorrhaging talent and gifts losing the very citizens we have invested in and educated (with meager resources for that matter) to other economies, where they go to build and strengthen economies elsewhere.

According to Chamisa, it is nothing short of devastating that Zimbabwe has consistently haemorrhaged its most precious and strategic resource: its talented, skilled, and highly-educated young professionals. He added:

This is plainly heartbreaking. Leadership is the missing link. Those in leadership have let the people down. By leadership, I mean everyone within the ecosystem of governance and influence. Any serious leadership would not allow this hemorrhaging to continue untamed or unchecked.

It has become a common disposition for citizens to go seeking opportunities in other countries. The motivation being that the grass is greener elsewhere.
Granted, the grass always seems greener elsewhere, but it should be greenest wherever we are. Yet, right now, that green grass is benefitting no one here—except a select few.

Chamisa gets calls from professionals who want to leave Zimbabwe every day. He thinks it's sad that the country is losing its talented and educated people. Chamisa says the leaders in Zimbabwe need to do something to stop this brain drain. He wants everyone in the country to work together to improve the economy and give people a reason to stay in Zimbabwe.

Chamisa: The Scale Of Brain Drain Zimbabwe Is Experiencing Is Staggering

UK-based Zimbabwean lawyer and political commentator Brighton Mutebuka has reported sources as saying the ZANU PF politburo has approved a proposal by some party members to amend Zimbabwe’s Constitution to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term. Below is Mutebuka’s post on X:

Highly placed sources from ZANU PF‘s politburo stated that the party gave the greenlight for Zimbabwe’s Constitution to be amended to extend ED‘s presidential term. The meeting was described as having been highly charged or tense.
It was apparently the first time that the subject had been broached before the Soviet style Politburo. Before this, the matter was reportedly sketched out via choreographed pro-ED public rallies to railroad the party structures into adopting the resolution before a party head feigning disinterest &amp; ignorance of the subject.
During the heated meeting, some reportedly argued that the amendment was unConstitutional. ED was reported to have pretended to be typically uninterested before suddenly &amp; decisively intervening to emphasise the fact that there was a binding resolution – at the most opportune time, to bat away the claim of unconstitutionality.
Chiwenga was reported to have remained totally silent during the proceedings, a development which apparently baffled many – including some on his side.
Oppah Muchinguri reportedly took the task of ED‘s fierce chief enforcer. She reportedly complained that some, (apparently referring to Chiwenga indirectly), barely said anything during party meetings but were quick to stir trouble out of it via opposing binding party resolutions!
The above then paved the way for Geza &amp; other ZANU PF party leaders to be expelled on the premises explained by Patrick Chinamasa in the video below. In typical ZANU PF fashion, the whole show appeared to have been scripted to flush out Chiwenga‘s backers, prod Chiwenga into the open to expose him, and then expel his vocal backers in the party.
As things stand, relying on the binding 2030 resolution, it is now theoretically / technically possible for Chiwenga to be expelled for “disloyalty” if he repeatedly and demonstrably fails to publicly back the resolution.
This strategy forms part of the “warning” ED gave during his address against those who failed to respect the party &amp; its strictures. Whether or not ED will go for the “jugular” in that fashion remains to be seen, as such a monumental chessboard move is fraught with a great many risks which he will need to put contingent measures for before executing it.
A few weeks ago, many, including yours truly – wrongly speculated that perhaps the military had self-deployed tanks in Harare and other areas in scenes akin to November 2017.
Several highly placed sources suggested that it was actually ED himself who did this as a pre-emptive gesture to Chiwenga – to show that he could still command the military – perhaps via Sibanda.
If the sources are correct, it means that ED is progressively filibustering the whole body politic and strangling Chiwenga – in ZANU PF and in state institutions, including in terrain which had been thought to be favourable to Chiwenga, like the military.
This means that the path to a favourable outcome for Chiwenga is dramatically narrowing, and he would have to come out with a spectacular, Houdini like manoeuvre to escape the stranglehold within the current political window left.
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
Zimbabwe is now inexorably marching towards either an ED life presidency or a dynasty, depending on who you ask, barring the unexpected. If the intel shared from the sources is accurate, as is highly likely, in the next few weeks or months, we should start seeing “movements” from Ziyambi Ziyambi and the captured Parliament to kickstart the Constitutional framework to enforce ED‘s tilt at a life presidency which I exclusively disclosed here 2 years ago to many disbelieving folks!

The biggest take away is Chiwenga‘s reported silence during probably one of the most significant Politburo meetings in ZANU PF &amp; Zimbabwe‘s history! Did he “choke?” Was he intimidated? Had be been “tipped” ahead of the meeting – perhaps that it was trap to see if he would foolishly back Geza &amp; crew and be accused of being their Godfather? It is part of an elaborate strategy – a long game – smoke &amp; mirrors version of his own? At this point, we simply do not know!
Whatever we all think, it was a huge victory for ED – for now. He has effectively managed to get “elected” as a life President by ZANU PF without ever publicly claiming to want the position.
By the very same act, it is now illegal in ZANU PF to go against the 2030 resolution, so Chiwenga is now no longer able to publicly oppose the resolution without risking being subjected to disciplinary action.
In terms of the military, CDF Phillip Valerio Sibanda is above Sanyatwe in terms of protocol and is in ED’s corner, the War Veterans are currently divided after ED unleashed Douglas Mahiya &amp; Tungwarara on them – so the situation is at best murky for Chiwenga &amp; his team. He would have to find ingenious / create ways to dismantle that coalition &amp; steal a march on ED.

ZANU PF Politburo Okays Constitutional Amendment To Extend Mnangagwa's Term, Says Mutebuka

A political activist has dismissed President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s recent declaration that he will retire at the end of his second term in 2028, arguing that it should not be taken seriously.
During an interactive meeting with selected editors from both public and private media at State House on Monday, 17 February, Mnangagwa said he would not be persuaded to remain in power beyond 2028.
However, in a Facebook post, Hon. Learnmore K Magorimbo, president of the Zimbabwe Youth Alliance (ZYA), suggested that Mnangagwa’s statement was merely a tactic to buy time and not a reflection of the actual situation. Wrote Magorimbo:

Today, in a carefully staged meeting at State House, Mnangagwa once again played the role of a constitutionalist, claiming that he will operate “within the confines of the constitution” and that he has no intention of clinging to power. But history has shown that when Mnangagwa speaks of legality, he is only justifying his next move.
This is the same man who promised economic reform, democracy, and an end to corruption—yet all Zimbabweans have seen is worsening poverty, political repression, and a looting frenzy by his inner circle. His words are never a reflection of reality but a tool to buy time.

Magorimbo warned Mnangagwa’s opponents that the ZANU PF leader needs more time, not to transition power, but to further consolidate it. He said:

If he were truly sincere about stepping down, he would do so now. But his real intention is clear—he needs more time, not to transition power, but to consolidate it.
He is not preparing for retirement; he is restrategizing. His past actions speak louder than today’s empty words.

The ZYA leader argued that Mnangagwa’s assurances were not genuine signs of good faith, but rather a calculated move to ease pressure and adjust his strategy.
He further warned that the longer Mnangagwa remains in power, the more ruthless his tactics are likely to become. Said Magorimbo:

Social media personality Mmatigari has again criticized Wicknell Chivayo for recklessly throwing around US dollars and flying with a group of “mapostori” in chartered jets, calling it a mockery of hardworking Zimbabweans who cannot identify any legitimate business he operates that benefits the public.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mmatigari said that if Strive Masiyiwa, John Moxon, or other business figures engaged in similar displays of wealth, people would not begrudge them, as they at least know the source of their money, despite potential disapproval of their business practices.
Masiyiwa is the founder and chairman of Econet Global, a leading telecommunications company with operations in multiple countries, while Moxon has a major stake in Meikles Limited. The group includes renowned brands like Victoria Falls Hotel, TM Supermarkets, Meikles Stores, Meikles Centar Mining, and Tanganda Tea Company.
Mmatigari suggested that if Chivayo were engaging in such antics in countries like China, he would have faced severe consequences. Wrote Mmatigari:

The nation has spent the last several weeks plugging smuggling along the our borders, making sure people pay duty and taxes. There is even a ministerial committee making sure the government collects money.
It’s a severe source of national disaffection if there are some devious characters with no known businesses throwing around hard currency like confetti in the face of so much hardship. In China, Xi Jinping would have waved his sjambok of discipline.

Over the past several months, Chivayo has given away cars to several public figures including musicians and retired football players.

A person named Mmatigari is angry at Wicknell Chivayo for spending a lot of money and showing off his wealth. They say it's not fair to hardworking Zimbabweans who don't know where Chivayo's money comes from. They compare him to other rich people who have successful businesses. Mmatigari thinks Chivayo would get in trouble in other countries for his behavior. Chivayo has also been giving away cars to famous people. People are upset because they don't see how his spending benefits anyone.

ALSO, the reckless and grotesque display of wealth and throwing around of cash by Wicknell Chivhayo who has no known operating business anywhere and had a brother arrested in South Africa peddling smuggled gold is a SECURITY THREAT. It’s a security problem at a time the government is squeezing taxes from anyone and everyone to make ends meet.
Does anyone know of anyone who has bought anything from any business run by Wicknell?
These issues give rise to the Geza situation, descriptions like zvigananda and general disaffection in society. We must at all times hold dear the societal values that make us Zimbabwean. We are not from Hollywood.
We descend from forefathers who coveted societal harmony, equitable access to the wealth of the land, and masters of building cities whose remains stand to this day. These values must be kept and cherished by all.

Mmatigari is unhappy that ZANU PF is focusing on extending the President's term instead of fixing economic problems like inflation and business closures. Neglecting the economy could be a danger to national security. The proposed sale of state-owned enterprises to settle Zimbabwe’s massive national debt is a short-sighted solution that will have far-reaching and devastating consequences for the country’s economy and its people.
Privatizing strategic assets will not only lead to job losses and economic instability but also compromise Zimbabwe’s sovereignty and self-determination. 
State-owned enterprises play a critical role in driving economic growth, providing essential services, and promoting social welfare.
Moreover, the sale of these enterprises will likely benefit foreign investors and wealthy criminal elements (Zvigananda) such as Wicknel Chivharo, Kuda Tagwirei etc at the expense of ordinary Zimbabweans.
Zvigananda will buy those Assets at far below the market prices for self-enrichment. This proposed sale is a blatant perpetuation of the looting scheme by Emmerson and his cronies.
It is unacceptable to sacrifice the country’s long-term interests and assets to appease foreign creditors and investors.
It is a source of serious worry to note that the bulk of the US 21 billion debt was not properly validated in that, a big portion relates to non-performing loans and Gvt guarantees extended to private individuals and companies who choose deliberately not to pay back under Command Agriculture and many other schemes. So to sell national assets to pay for such gross negligence is outrageous and is in defiance of logic.
Zimbabwe is well endowed with vast mineral resources which only requires an accountable government to pay off the 21 billion debt.
The only problem is a leadership which is not genuinely interested in serving Zimbabwe first but advance the embezzlement of national resources for their immediate families.
Zimbabwe mines produce around 1.6 tonnes of Gold per day across the country, but it has a huge debt overhang only as a result of the illicit exportation of the precious minerals promoted and protected by senior government politicians.
President Mnangagwa squandered the opportunity for debt restructuring through the Structural dialogue platform with International creditors as facilitated by the African Development Bank.
The government has failed to implement comprehensive reforms, including electoral, social, economic, and political reforms, necessary for sustainable debt resolution.
To make matters worse, ED perpetuates the broken social contract expressed in the government’s disregard for the Constitution, human rights, and the rule of law has eroded trust and confidence among international creditors and citizens.
Instead, he was on an overdrive in human rights violations and Illegal detentions eg cases of Hon Jameson Timba and others, Hon Amos Chibaya and others, Job Sikhala, Namatai Kwekweza and others just to mention a few.
After realising that he lost the parliamentary majority, he teamed up with Sengezo Tshabangu to recall the legitimate CCC MPs in order to get a two-thirds majority by hook and crook.
All this makes International financial creditors feel insecure about lodging any further deals or debt restructuring with such a dishonest and crooked leader.
The real solution to our debt crisis is political. It is the bad politics that is hampering progress because it is tolerating the culture of corruption, nepotism, and Lawlessness.
By adopting a more sustainable and equitable approach, Zimbabwe can address its debt challenges while protecting the interests of its people and preserving its sovereignty.

Zimbabwe wants to sell state-owned businesses to pay a big debt, but it's not a good idea. It will hurt the economy and people. The country needs these businesses for growth and helping people. Selling them will mostly benefit rich foreigners and criminals, not regular Zimbabweans. The debt came from bad loans and government guarantees to private people who don't pay back. The leader, President Mnangagwa, hasn't fixed the problem. There is a lot of corruption and bad politics in Zimbabwe. To solve the debt problem, Zimbabwe needs to change its leadership and stop corruption.

Sale Of State Owned Enterprises Assets To Pay National Debt A Deadly Own Goal

Zimbabwean opposition politician Job Sikhala has called for the disbanding of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), arguing that the organisation has failed to address the region’s challenges.
Sikhala contends that instead of providing solutions for conflicts and disputed elections, SADC has “become a liability” and a platform for authoritarian leaders to assert their dominance. He said:

I totally agree with those who are arguing that SADC must be disbanded for its ineffective and moribund status.
SADC has not only become a liability to its citizens but has become an albatross on the neck of the people in the region.
It is now a platform used for grandstanding by clueless and cruel despots whose appetite for power and recognition is embarrassing.

Sikhala called for the disbandment of SADC and the formation of a new regional bloc focused on promoting democracy, and good governance, protecting citizens’ security, combating corruption, and addressing other critical issues. He said:

The region needs a people’s regional bloc governed through promoting democracy, good governance, protecting the security of its citizens, curtailment of siphoning of stolen funds into its banking systems and free trade markets.
We are currently having a cocktail of regimes promoting the murder of its citizens for the sake of retaining power right on their faces grinning. SADC must be disbanded immediately!

SADC is currently struggling with ongoing conflicts in member states, namely Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In Mozambique, the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) was deployed to combat the jihadist insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province, but its efforts have seen limited success.
The mission has faced challenges, including insufficient cooperation between SADC and Mozambican forces, as well as the controversial involvement of Rwandan troops, which has complicated the operation.
In the DRC, SADC’s Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) was deployed to address the resurgence of armed groups in the eastern part of the country.
However, violence has escalated, leading to widespread displacement caused by groups like the M23 rebels, as well as the tragic loss of peacekeepers’ lives, including 13 South African soldiers.

Job Sikhala, a Zimbabwean opposition politician, wants to get rid of SADC because it hasn't helped with conflicts and bad elections in the region. He thinks SADC just lets bad leaders show off and hurt people. He wants a new group that will focus on democracy, protecting citizens, stopping corruption, and fixing other important problems. SADC is having trouble dealing with conflicts in Mozambique and the DRC, and the missions there are not doing very well. There are issues with cooperation and foreign troops getting involved. Violence is getting worse, and even soldiers are dying. Sikhala thinks SADC should be disbanded and replaced with a better organization.

Sikhala: SADC Has Failed The Region, Should Be Disbanded

Opposition politician Fadzayi Mahere has sharply criticized the “ED2030” agenda, which refers to the push by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s supporters to extend his rule beyond the constitutional two-term limit, that is, from 2028, when his second and final term ends, to 2030.
In recent days, some of the ED2030 proponents have gone even further, suggesting that Mnangagwa’s rule should be extended to 2033, effectively giving him a third term in office.
Responding to Information Minister Jenfan Muswere’s statement, Mahere dismissed the notion as “patently nonsensical.”
She argued that the ED2030 agenda is being driven by “a small coterie of power mongers in ZANU PF who want to extend their incompetent, corrupt rule.”
Mahere’s scathing rebuke comes in the wake of ZANU PF’s efforts to extend Mnangagwa’s tenure, which the opposition leader sees as an affront to Zimbabwe’s democratic principles and the will of the people.
In a post on the social media platform X, Mahere rejected the suggestion that those who oppose any proposed extension of presidential term limits are merely acting at the behest of Western interests. She wrote:

Earlier this week, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere criticized the Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD) for their vocal opposition to the proposed presidential term limit extension.
Muswere claimed that the ZHOCD consists of “donor-funded individuals pretending to represent the Church in Zimbabwe.”
Responding to Muswere’s statement, Mahere asserted that the majority of Zimbabweans do not support the ED2030 agenda.
She said Zimbabweans had overwhelmingly voted in favour of the current constitution, which limits presidential terms to two.
The Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations had previously warned that extending Mnangagwa’s term would amount to a “coup against the constitution.” Said Mahere:

The 2013 Constitution which imposes strict term limits on the presidency was passed by a referendum by the people of Zimbabwe. The people have not said they want that to change. Indeed, we do not.
A small coterie of power mongers in Zanu PF who want to extend their incompetent, corrupt rule cannot usurp the Constitution and what the people declared as their collective will in the constitutional referendum.
This is the essence of why Zimbabweans were so opposed to Robert Mugabe – yet here you are, trying to revive his penchant for holding onto power when it is time for change.

Opposition leader Fadzayi Mahere is upset about a plan called "ED2030" that wants to let President Mnangagwa rule until 2030 or even longer. Mahere Decries "ED2030" Agenda As Power Grab By A Corrupt ZANU PF "Coterie"

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti has warned of potential economic chaos in 2025 if there is no liberalised exchange rate and no injection of liquidity into the economy.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/business/article/200036951/economy-heads-for-a-bloodbath-biti">NewsDay</a>, Biti said the introduction of the gold-backed ZiG currency in 2024 has contributed to economic instability. Said Biti:

Companies are paying the price of an uncertain political regime and exchange rate mismanagement. The introduction of the ZiG [Zimbabwe Gold] currency has only brought chaos to the economy.
</blockquote>
Biti warned that Zimbabwe could face a total collapse in aggregate demand as businesses grapple with crippling debt charges and limited access to affordable capital.
To prevent further economic decline, Biti said that must be cheap money in the market to provide businesses with the funding necessary for survival.
He also criticized the export surrender requirement, calling it an unnecessary burden that restricts access to foreign currency.
Under the current system, exporters are required to surrender 25% of their proceeds in exchange for local currency at the prevailing interbank exchange rate.
Biti further called for the removal of money transfer fees, arguing that they stifle economic activity and increase the cost of doing business.
The former Finance Minister also expressed concern over the political uncertainty surrounding the potential extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms, which are set to end in 2028.
He warned that such political instability could further exacerbate the country’s economic challenges. Biti said:

Biti Warns Of Economic Chaos In 2025

Outspoken former MP Fadzayi Mahere has denounced the “Mbinga culture” that has pervaded Zimbabwe, saying it does not represent the nation’s identity.
The term “Mbinga” in Zimbabwean slang refers to young, wealthy people who live lavish lifestyles, often flaunting their wealth through expensive cars, flashy clothes, and extravagant parties.
This term has become associated with a culture of displaying unexplained wealth, which some people view as a reflection of corruption and economic disparity in the country.
Some of the so-called mbingas are closely connected to self-styled prophets, particularly those who preach the “Prosperity Gospel.”
One of these prophets was secretly filmed bragging about laundering millions of dollars, which is a crime.
Some of the prophets associated with Mbingas fake miracles to gain followers, whom they then dupe into parting with their hard-earned money.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Mahere argued that the “Zimbabwean Dream,” which stands in opposition to the Mbinga culture, is about getting a good education, working hard, and making an honest living. She wrote:

We are the society that celebrated the bright child in the village who became a teacher, the firstborn who went on to become a nurse, the A-grade student who went on to excel in med school and the entrepreneur who started a bus company.

We are a society that would work hard, save up to buy a car then go back home to show our parents the fruit of our hard work as we took them for a spin.
We are the society that taught children not to pick money off the floor because it is wrong to take what’s not ours.
We are a society that didn’t demand welfare from the State, undue tax breaks or even a free ride from Govt.
Instead, our demand was for a sound socio-economic ecosystem that gives us a fair opportunity to work, make a decent living that enables us to put food on the table, send kids to school and put a roof over our heads.
Mbinga culture – with all its corruption, lies and fake miracles – is not who we are.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s official biographer, Eddie Cross, has said Chinese nationals have increasingly targeted Zimbabwe to secure raw materials for their industries, intending to eventually return to China.
According to Cross, there are now more than 85,000 Chinese nationals residing in Zimbabwe, but he said these people are not permanent migrants; rather, they all plan to return to China eventually.
In a recent <a href="https://www.eddiecross.africanherd.com/241228.html">article on his website</a>, Cross asserted that China’s move to establish a presence in Zimbabwe is driven by the need to relocate steel production away from China due to trade restrictions from the US and Europe.
He also suggested that the Chinese are looking to transfer environmentally polluting industries to Africa, seeking to capitalize on the continent’s natural resources while avoiding the environmental constraints imposed at home. He wrote:

We have the best Chrome deposits in the world, 9 billion tonnes of it worth a conservative US$100 trillion.
We have enormous Lithium reserves and they are loaded with other critical minerals that are in fact worth more than the Lithium and we do not understand what that means.
We applaud them because shortly we will be exporting 5 million tonnes of lithium concentrate a year to China, worth perhaps US$4 billion in new export earnings, four times our famous tobacco crop, but missing the fact that it might contain other metals and minerals worth many times more.
A quarter of our gold output goes to China and we have no idea about how they are doing that or what is involved, but the evidence of open cast mining, large investments in milling and extracting machinery for the small-scale mining industry here which is among the most important in the world, is everywhere.
They ignore environmental regulations and leave behind a moonscape of countryside that looks like a World War 1 battlefield.
They are exploiting our finest coal reserves for their smelters and steel production, even exporting their surplus

Cross said the exploitation of Zimbabwe’s raw materials by the Chinese began after the discovery of diamonds in Marange. He said:

It all started when we discovered the Marange diamond fields and they joined forces with our old army generals and created a company that was eventually responsible for 80 per cent of the production of raw diamonds there.
I estimate that US$30 billion in raw diamonds has been produced between 2008 and today. At one stage we were larger than Botswana as a diamond-producing State.
The Chinese company that was involved was a tiny, rural corporation in China, owned by the Red Army. Today it is a multinational corporation with a whole bevy of top-class hotels, a private Jet and headquarters for Africa in Mozambique.
Our old Army Generals all benefitted greatly, just look at the homes many of them have built in this country, the physical evidence of Chinese-owned real estate in Harare is everywhere.
The people of Marange still wallow in poverty and the active diamond fields do not have a single kilometre of the tarred road although they have an international standard airport which can receive large aircraft to fly products out and bring people and equipment in…
What concerns me, is that none of this activity has any application to the needs of Zimbabwe. When I investigated the Marange diamond fields in 2012, as a Member of Parliament, I was able, with relative ease, to get the production information I needed for 5 of the 6 mining companies involved.
Why, because they all employed Zimbabweans and I got daily output figures and even quality data (19 per cent Gemstone quality) and even sales data. The last remaining miner was Chinese owned and operated and they employed no Zimbabwean staff.

Cross argued that while Zimbabwe gains some benefit from exporting raw materials to China, the Chinese derive far greater advantages, all while causing significant environmental degradation. He said:

The benefit to Zimbabwe of this level of Chinese activity here is evident. They buy the majority of our tobacco, our ferrochrome exports run to tens of millions of dollars a year.
Drive past Hwange Colliery, owned notionally by the Government but in fact now largely a Chinese asset. The smokestacks of coke batteries belching into the atmosphere.
The queues of heavy-duty trucks carrying coal to local and regional markets. The road north and south now smashed and barely usable.
There is little or no value addition except for the primary production phase. There are no plans to invest in a Lithium refinery to produce a product suitable for use in the production of batteries.
Even the steel plant is only producing steel billets for export to China for conversion into finished products.
International sanctions may force them to produce steel for sale to manufacturers in the West but for the time being they are producing a product for export in primary form.

Chinese Investments In Zimbabwe Yield Minimal Benefits For The Country - Eddie Cross

A heated debate has unfolded on X (formerly Twitter) among Zimbabweans, as many have drawn comparisons between the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the infamous Ian Smith-led Rhodesian regime.
Some argue that despite Rhodesia’s deeply entrenched white supremacy, the Ian Smith administration was more efficient and less corrupt than the current ZANU PF-led government.
These critics point out that, even under international sanctions following Rhodesia’s illegal declaration of independence, Smith’s regime invested heavily in infrastructure, leaving behind well-developed roads, hospitals, and schools.
In contrast, they claim that much of this infrastructure has deteriorated under the so-called “New Dispensation.”
However, there are strong voices on the other side, staunchly opposing any romanticization of Rhodesia. 
ZANU PF chief whip and Gutu South MP, Pupurai Togarepi, has even called for legislation to criminalise celebrations of Rhodesia.
Amidst the controversy, former CCC MP Fadzayi Mahere, known for her progressive views, has refrained from directly engaging in the debate.
Yet, she did share a powerful statement on X, saying thousands of Zimbabweans who fought for the country’s liberation did not do so for the ZANU PF elite to merely replace the colonial elite.
Instead, they fought for the collective empowerment of all Zimbabweans, to ensure the fruits of independence were shared by the people. She wrote:

There is a reason why our esteemed forebears called it a War of Liberation and not a War of Decolonisation. The guiding principle was to free the masses from all forms of repression and not simply to move them from Jail A to Jail B. It is not liberation if one violent oppressor is replaced by another.
Liberation means one man, one vote – not stolen elections.
Liberation means freedom from state-sponsored violence – not replacing a violent Rhodesian Special Branch with your own violent police force.
Liberation means gutsaruzhinji (everyone must eat) – not replacing colonial elites who eat alone with Zanu PF elites who eat alone.
Liberation means respecting the rights and liberties of every citizen – not replacing the repressive Law and Order Maintenance Act with your own repressive POSA or MOPA.
Liberation means ensuring every person has a decent life and equal access to freedom, fairness and opportunity.
The current state of affairs is a slap in the face to our true heroes who fought and lost their lives for the dream of a better Zimbabwe.
You may not respect us, but can you at least respect those who died to destroy what you now represent? It’s a mess. We need new leaders.

Zimbabweans Clash On X Over ZANU PF Rule Vs. Ian Smith's Rhodesia

Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a critical electricity supply crisis that has profoundly affected its economic stability and the quality of life for its citizens.
The nation’s energy infrastructure is predominantly dependent on the ageing Hwange Thermal Power Station and the Kariba Hydroelectric Dam.
Both facilities are encountering significant operational inefficiencies attributed to insufficient maintenance protocols.
As of late 2024, Zimbabwe’s electricity generation capability has plummeted, frequently producing less than 35% of the total demand.
This shortfall has resulted in extensive power outages, with some regions enduring blackouts lasting up to 18 hours daily.
Let’s go back memory lane in 2010. The government aimed to enhance electricity generation capacity by investing in new power plants and refurbishing existing ones.
According to the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), “the country plans to increase its generation capacity through various projects, including the expansion of Kariba South Power Station and the construction of new thermal power stations.”
This strategy was intended not only to meet domestic demand but also to enable Zimbabwe to export surplus electricity to neighbouring countries, thereby generating revenue.
The significant question was how to effect the aforementioned. According to the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) in 2011, “the introduction of prepaid meters is expected to enhance revenue collection and improve cash flow,” which is crucial for financing operational costs and infrastructure upgrades.
By converting to a prepaid model, ZESA can better manage its resources and allocate funds towards critical maintenance and expansion projects.
The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a utility provider in Zimbabwe, commenced the installation of prepaid electricity meters in August 2012.
Zimbabwe implemented a prepaid electricity metering system primarily to mitigate several critical issues within its energy infrastructure.
Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), encountered substantial fiscal challenges stemming from elevated levels of arrears and an escalating debt crisis.
By adopting a prepaid metering framework, ZESA sought to enhance liquidity by mandating that consumers remit payment for electrical energy prior to usage, thereby diminishing the likelihood of default on payments. 
According to the Electricity Act [Chapter 13:19], ZESA is responsible for generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity.
It is required to maintain an effective electricity supply system, but this must be done within the limits of its available resources and infrastructure capabilities. ZESA is not obligated to ensure uninterrupted power.
Despite this statute which is used as an excuse, the prevailing situation raises critical inquiries regarding the efficacy of the leadership within the power utility sector.
It prompts an examination of whether the current administration exhibits a deficiency in managerial competence or if there exists a substantial volume of covert and unmonitored operational activities. 
Over the past thirteen years, consumers have been remitting payments for electricity that ostensibly encompass costs associated with infrastructure maintenance and facility expansion.
Nevertheless, empirical evidence suggests a stagnation or regression in service quality; rather than witnessing enhancements, there is an observable decline in both power generation facilities and supporting infrastructure, exacerbated at a rate surpassing that observed prior to the implementation of prepaid metering systems.
How then did we move from bad to worse in terms of power supply after the introduction of the prepaid metering system? How then did we end up in even more debt?
This scenario engenders a plethora of unresolved inquiries, leaving stakeholders with more uncertainties than clarifications.
Power outages have raised operating expenses and reduced productivity in the commercial sector. Particularly badly struck are sectors like manufacturing and agriculture, where companies frequently run at reduced capacity or close completely during outages.
Food insecurity and economic loss result from farmers’ challenges with irrigation and processing perishable commodities.
Additionally, in this uncertain environment, small enterprises that rely on a steady power supply for machinery or refrigeration find it difficult to thrive.
As a result, the economy as a whole experiences slowed growth, which exacerbates poverty and reduces job prospects.
The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) must fulfil its mandate of regulatory oversight over the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) and conduct thorough investigations into grievances raised by the populace.
As stakeholders in both civic and consumer capacities, it is our prerogative to demand accountability from the power utility entity.
The citizenry has expressed significant fatigue regarding the recurring narratives surrounding infrastructural maintenance issues and diminished water resource levels.

Paying For Darkness: Citizens Struggle With Prepaid Power Failures

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti says the Mutapa Investment Fund (MIF), previously known as the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Zimbabwe, has been used to covertly privatize the country’s most important parastatals.
The MIF is a state-owned investment fund established to manage and invest surplus funds generated from Zimbabwe’s natural resources.
Created through the Sovereign Wealth Fund Act in 2014, it was renamed in 2023 via Statutory Instrument 156.
The fund manages assets from various state-owned enterprises, including NetOne, National Railways of Zimbabwe, Air Zimbabwe, TelOne, and others.
Biti criticized the “privatization” of these parastatals, saying it was carried out without proper valuations or parliamentary oversight. Below are Biti’s comments on the MIF:

The Mutapa Fund has essentially been a back door privatization of 40 or so of the country’s biggest and most important parastatals that include Hwange, NRZ, IDC and NetOne.
The process was done without individual valuations of the different parastatals and parliamentary scrutiny.
The Mutapa Fund now controls a huge chunk of the country’s balance sheet and yet it is not accountable to Parliament or a line ministry.
It is a huge Asset Management Fund, privately controlled, yet it houses State Assets. This kind of arbitrage and theft is a national threat.
The repeal of section 22 of the Sovereign Wealth Fund Act which prevents the Mutapa Fund from securitising the shares of parastatals it now controls is proof of arbitrage on steroids.
This regime has no limits, nor elasticity, no shame. The Mutapa Fund and those who control it are a national threat to the country’s sovereignty.
A country can’t be run on the philosophy and polity of looting for the sake of looting. The class of 2017 is a cabal, a ruthless brood whose only interest is to loot Zimbabwe dry. Self-respecting decent wananchi should say NO.

In response, Mahere argued that the RBZ should issue a public apology instead of inquiring about customer satisfaction, particularly given its failure to fulfill basic responsibilities, such as issuing a timely Monetary Policy Statement.
She also pointed out that the ZiG currency, launched by the RBZ in April 2024, is already out of circulation before the larger denominations were even released. Wrote Mahere on X:

Zimbabwe faces significant challenges in meeting the social and economic rights of its citizens, as evidenced by various indicators such as GNP per capita, indices of social development, labour productivity, and the Social Progress Index.
As of 2024, Zimbabwe’s GNP per capita remains low compared to regional averages, indicating limited economic resources available for individual citizens.
The Social Development Index highlights deficiencies in health care, education, and living standards, which are critical components of social rights. 
Article 22 of the UDHR states, “Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international cooperation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.”
Article 22 of the Banjul Charter asserts that “All peoples shall have the right to their economic, social and cultural development with due regard to their freedom and identity and in equal enjoyment of the common heritage of mankind.”
Labor productivity has been hindered by economic instability and a lack of investment in infrastructure and human capital, further exacerbating poverty levels.
Additionally, the Social Progress Index reflects poor performance in areas such as personal rights and freedoms, access to basic knowledge, and environmental sustainability.
Collectively, these metrics suggest that Zimbabwe is struggling to fulfil its obligations to ensure adequate social and economic rights for its population.
The concept of social and economic well-being as a human right is grounded in the principles of progressive realization, which emphasizes that states have an obligation to progressively enhance the living conditions of their citizens.
This involves ensuring that social value is embedded within policies and practices, thereby fostering an environment where individuals can thrive economically and socially.
Adaptive social protection systems play a crucial role in this framework by providing safety nets that respond to the vulnerabilities faced by populations, particularly in times of crisis or change. 
These systems not only aim to alleviate poverty but also promote resilience and empowerment, reinforcing the idea that access to basic needs such as food, healthcare, education, and housing is fundamental to human dignity.
Thus, recognizing social and economic wellbeing as a human right underscores the responsibility of governments and societies to create inclusive frameworks that support all individuals in achieving their full potential.
In order to ensure social and economic well-being as a human right in Zimbabwe, the government, business sector entities, international agencies, and civil society organizations must all take a multipronged approach.
First and foremost, the government ought to give top priority to enacting laws that support fair access to necessities like housing, healthcare, and education.
This can be accomplished by giving these sectors larger budgetary allocations and making sure that resources are allocated equitably among all communities and regions.
It is crucial to promote economic opportunities by creating jobs. By lowering administrative barriers and offering assistance to small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), the government should foster an atmosphere that encourages entrepreneurship.
International organizations can also help by offering financial support and technical assistance for development initiatives meant to boost productivity and infrastructure.
Furthermore, in order to fortify legislative frameworks that safeguard human rights, parties must cooperate. This involves ensuring that international treaties pertaining to social and economic rights are incorporated into national law and ratifying them.
Human rights education initiatives can enable citizens to effectively demand their rights. It is therefore imperative for every citizen to understand that they have the right to social and economic well-being and the government should play a pivotal role in ensuring that those rights are not thwarted by policies and frameworks which do not uphold the very foundations of human rights.

Zimbabwe is struggling to give its people good social and economic rights. This means things like health care, education, and job opportunities. The government, businesses, and international groups need to work together to make things better. They should make laws that help everyone have access to basic needs. They also need to create jobs and improve infrastructure. People need to be educated about their rights so they can demand them. Everyone deserves a good life, and it's the government's job to make sure that happens.

Social And Economic Wellbeing: A Human Right

Former Finance Minister, Tendai Biti, has claimed that banks have been bailing out the government with civil servants’ pay, but some banks “refused to do this” in November leading to delays in payments of the ZiG component.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/banks-said-no-biti-explains-why-some-civil-servants-not-paid-salaries-on-time/">ZimLive</a>, Biti said government revenues have “collapsed to the point that at the present moment, the regime has no capacity to pay wages.” Said Biti:

Revenues seriously dipped after April 5 when they introduced the ZiG. Big companies reorganised. Some retrenched, some relocated and many middle-sized companies simply shut shop.
Only US$2.5 billion was collected up to September against a budget target of US$9 billion. In the last 10 years, the country has managed to collect at least US$4 billion as budget receipts annually but the regime will be lucky to collect US$3 billion by the end of this year.
</blockquote>
Thousands of civil servants did not receive the ZiG component of their salaries last month, which included half of their annual bonus.
Despite unions threatening to strike, the government has not explained why some workers did not receive their payments on time.
Two banks were especially impacted: POSB and AFC Holdings (formerly Agribank). POSB reportedly released salaries on November 29, while civil servants with accounts at AFC Holdings were paid on December 2. Said Biti:

In the past few months, banks have actually been paying salaries for the government and then subsequently waiting for a reimbursement.
In November, they refused to do this. They are miffed by the government’s failure to honour what they are owed, particularly their Non-Negotiable Certificates of Deposits (NNCDs).

Biti said that the government has spent millions of dollars in unbudgeted expenditure even as the revenues continue to dry up. He said:

They have been living beyond their means. They did not pull any stops in preparation for the SADC summit in July where they spent millions of dollars.
But what has really killed them is the collapse in revenue collection as a result of a shrinking tax base.
Mthuli Ncube’s policies, particularly exchange control mismanagement and skewed revenue measures, have de-industrialised the country and increased informalisation. Big players have left this economy since 2018 thanks to this finance minister and his government.
This in turn has created a desperate response where Ncube has had to resort to indirect taxes to target the informal sector.
But indirect taxes are regressive and hit the working people harder. No wonder there is such unprecedented disaffection and discontent against [Emmerson] Mnangagwa and his regime.

Biti said the government should “cut taxes, encourage spending and investment, liberalise the ZiG, if not scrap it, and a drastic cut to government expenditure.

"Banks' Refusal To Bail Out Government Caused Delays In Civil Servants' Salaries"

United States-based Zimbabwean opposition activist Freeman Chari has suggested that the former leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Nelson Chamisa, personalised the movement through his doctrine of “Strategic Ambiguity.”
Chari claimed that when the CCC was established, there was a consensus on the necessity of a constitution and organisational structures.
However, he argued that the principle of Strategic Ambiguity subsequently overshadowed those initial agreements. Posting on X, Chari said:

When CCC was formed in my conversations with NC a number of us said to him, we will defend you with our lives out there but in private we will tell you the things that need to be fixed so we don’t fall into the same predicament we did with MDC-Alliance.
Top was the need for a clear constitution with clearly articulated roles, I believe a draft constitution was made. Secondly, it was about structure &amp; I remember giving him a document that had alternative structure which I worked on with Dr Magaisa. Lastly it was about branding etc
Unfortunately Strategic Ambiguity took precedence. The people who defended this vehemently in private are the same pple after election who ditched him. They were opportunists esp the Harare crew. What pained me more was that we had worked so hard for 2 yrs to build this but we had no way or leg to defend ourselves. Anyone could see our potential flaws but they were overlooked.
This carried into the elections &amp; candidate selection. We all know bereka mwana was stupid, but these comrades who supported it before they were outwitted/ousted shld have known better way before this. They were selfish and thought they could keep their proximity to power through stupidity.
After elections when NC failed to reign in the few MPs we had I cld see we were sitting ducks. Every bara was hitting the head. In my view, even through ego we had continued on Strategic Ambiguity, if the fundamentals of organization building had been done right behind the scenes we could have had a fighting chance.
I fear without the willingness to retrospect and introspect we will go round and round in circles with multiple heartbreaks. I am not willing to go through that again!

Nelson Chamisa's way of leading the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) was criticized by Freeman Chari. Chari said that instead of focusing on important things like a clear constitution and structure, Chamisa emphasized Strategic Ambiguity. Chari and others tried to advise Chamisa in private, but their concerns were ignored. This caused problems during the elections and candidate selection. Chari believes that without looking back and learning, the CCC will keep facing disappointments. Chari does not want to go through that again.

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti has criticized the 2025 National Budget presented by Mthuli Ncube on Thursday, describing it as shallow, dishonest, and out of touch with the needs of the people.
In a post on X, Biti said that the budget reflects the incompetence and corruption of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.
He further criticized the proposed tax measures, claiming they show a lack of empathy and disproportionately target vulnerable sectors.
Biti also argued that the budget fails to address the pressing issue of critical energy shortages. He wrote:

The 2024 Budget Statement was presented in the backdrop of a tough and challenging year for the working people of Zimbabwe.
A year in which the citizen had been abused by extreme levels of inflation, emasculation by a rigged exchange rate, extortionate taxes, power shortages, poverty, and the aftermath of a scorching drought.
Naively, the citizen and businesses thus hoped for a BOLD, HONEST DECISIVE &amp; TECHNICALLY SOUND budget that would address the crippling challenges of the day and offer hope &amp; catharsis to a broken fatalistic desperate and disparate population.
Regrettably, Minister Ncube’s budget was nothing but a shallow, hollow, narcissistic, dishonest anti-people ritual. 
The Budget correctly bluetooths everything cataleptic about the Mnangwagwa regime: incompetence, ideologically vacuous, corrupt, insensitive, vicious and toxic.
Seven issues amplify the fatality of Mthuli’s project. First is the clear failure to calibrate the Budget in US$. In a volatile high inflation environment expressing the Budget in a local currency ravaged by serious inflation pressures is clearly a faux pas.
Zim has gone through six bouts of currency failures and any budget expressed in a local currency is a facade. A volatile ZIG also creates accounting chaos for businesses. Ultimately, a ZIG-based budget is simply a means to hide and mislead the true depth of economic mismanagement
Second Mr Ncube’s microeconomic framework and projections are simply unsound and blatantly dishonest. A 2 % GDP growth for 2024 is simply overstated.
It underestimates the ZIG-induced depression that has captured markets since 5 April 2024. A period that has seen many companies close or downsize.
There has been a massive curtailment of revenue inflows in companies and in the government itself. Aggregate demand simply collapsed resulting in Government revenues also collapsing to the point that at the present moment regime has no capacity to pay wages.
The budget projection of a 6 % growth in 2025 is dross. It is based on 3 assumptions viz decent rainfall, low inflation and a stable currency, and a tight fiscal and monetary policy. Expecting this government to live within its means and to keep a tight fiscal ship is madness.
The regime must monetize its rent-seeking projects particularly the feeding trough that road construction has become.
Particularly command agriculture and multiple Presidential schemes. Once the boys are paid broad money shoots through the roof. Inflation spikes and the ZIG falls.
Third, the 2025 budget framework is unsound and must be rejected by Parliament. In 2024 ZIG110,722 billion in revenue will be collected against projected expenditure of ZIG 119.972 resulting in a deficit of ZIG 9.3 billion. (they don’t sing about surpluses anymore).
In 2025 projected revenue jumps to ZIG 276.4 billion or US$ 7.5 billion. Whilst expenditure is ZIG 276.3 billion or US$7,668 billion.
On a growth of 6%, it eludes one’s wisdom how revenue will grow by 150% from ZIG110 billion in 2024 to ZIG 276 billion.
Put in another way, Mr Ncube expects 2024 revenues of ZIG 110 billion or US 3.05 billion to jump to US$7,5 billion.
This mendacity reflects disrespect for Zimbabwean intellect. More than that reflects total and utter contempt of Parliament. But the real issue is where will.
Mr Ncube extracted US$7,5 billion when companies have been squeezed dry and closing down retrenching or relocating.
Fourth the regime proposed revenue measures are narcissistic and lack empathy. Imposing taxes on betting income, on Pizza and chicken inn is ridiculous.
Targeting informal traders in spare parts dealers, groceries, hardware, lodgers, fabric merchandisers and boutiques for taxation is cruel and ridiculous.
The regime suffers from the warped view that it can extract money from stone. The pathological obsession with taxation is sickening
There is a crisis of under-accumulation in Zimbabwe. Companies are shutting down and unemployment is on the rise.
The 2025 Budget had a duty to create a stimulus and to provide incentives for consumption &amp; production to jump-start the economy.
Taxes had to be reduced various stimuli provided. Instead, a vacuous bankrupt government went the opposite of what logic dictated.
Sixth there had to be a push for currency reform. ZIG has failed and failed in absolute terms. The epicentre of the Zim crises is exchange rate mismanagement.
Finally, given the current structural energy crises the Budget ought to have addressed the power situation. Indeed it is ridiculous to imagine the economy will grow by 6% without power. No wonder and very poignantly ZESA went off during the Budget presentation.
Truth is, this is the worst government in the history of governments and the 2025 Budget is a further exhibit of this fact.

Biti Slams 2025 National Budget As Shallow And Out of Touch

Former Member of Parliament for Mt Pleasant, Fadzayi Mahere (CCC), has urged the Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, Mthuli Ncube, to present the 2025 National Budget in US dollars instead of the ZiG currency, which is prone to depreciation.
Ncube is expected to announce the budget this Thursday, November 28, at the New Parliament in Mt Hampden.
Mahere also advised Ncube to avoid introducing new taxes. Instead, she suggested reducing or removing VAT on small businesses, the 2% tax on banking transactions, the sugar tax, and import duties on basic goods. Said Mahere:

<li>BUDGET WARNING: Today Mthuli Ncube will make his 2025 Budget Statement. The biggest mistake he can make would be to announce tax increases on an already shrinking tax base. Instead, he should do the following:</li>
<li>Announce tax incentives (especially for corporations) to encourage compliance;</li>
<li>Reduce the corporate tax rate remove the unnecessary VAT on small businesses to stimulate productivity;</li>
<li>Find ways to widen the tax base as opposed to squeezing the few who pay tax;</li>
<li>Reduce toll fees and fuel levies to reduce the overall cost of goods;</li>
<li>Remove or reduce the 2% tax on banking transactions to reduce the overall cost of doing business;</li>
<li>Remove the sugar tax;</li>
<li>Remove or reduce the ridiculous property tax;</li>
<li>Remove import duty on basic goods to decrease the overall cost of living;</li>
<li>Remove obstacles on trade between manufacturers and retail suppliers;</li>
<li>State the budget in realistic USD figures so that it’s not a circus of announcing meaningless figures that are certain to devalue and which will in most instances never be disbursed.</li>

Former MP Fadzayi Mahere wants Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube to announce the 2025 budget in US dollars to prevent depreciation. She also advises against new taxes. Mahere Urges Mthuli To Avoid New Taxes, Present Budget In USD

Outspoken former Chivi South legislator Killer Zivhu (ZANU PF) has claimed that white employers in Zimbabwe treat their Black employees better than their Chinese counterparts.
In a post on X, Zivhu said he was “appalled” at the treatment of his cousin, who works as a driver for a Chinese employer.
He alleged that his cousin is forced to sleep in his car and cook meals in Bulawayo, which he then eats over three days in Harare, while his Chinese bosses enjoy comfortable hotel accommodations and fine dining. Said Zivhu:

Appalled by Chinese nationals’ treatment of Blacks in Zimbabwe! My cousin, a driver, sleeps in cars while they enjoy hotels. Cooks his meals in Bulawayo kuti agozodya ku Harare for 3 days, while they dine lavishly. White people show more dignity towards Blacks than Chinese.

Since 2000, when the Zimbabwean government seized farms from white farmers and adopted the “Look East” policy, there has been a significant influx of Chinese nationals, particularly in the mining sector.
However, numerous reports indicate that Chinese employers often mistreat their Black workers, paying them meagre wages and subjecting them to inhumane working conditions.
In September of this year, Daniel Molokele, the Member of Parliament for Hwange Central, criticized Chinese coal miners in the district for failing to adhere to Zimbabwe’s laws.
This came after residents of Ingagula township in Hwange raised concerns about excessive dust pollution caused by the haulage trucks and coal mining activities of the Chinese operators.
Molokele further alleged that Chinese investors are protected from scrutiny due to their connections with influential politicians in Harare.
In August, Farai Maguwu, the founding director of the Centre for Natural Resource Governance, described the growth of Chinese mining operations in Zimbabwe as a form of “organised crime” due to their exploitative practices.
He argued that mines established in Zimbabwe since 2000 have not contributed meaningfully to the improvement of the communities in which they operate. Said Maguwu:

Mining that is conducted in Zimbabwe is organised crime, it is not really formal. In terms of mines that started operating after the year 2000, the one that I think is a demonstration of unit of environmental social or governance risk is Zimplats.
If you go to Zimplats you will realise that they have invested in the road infrastructure, and they have built a town such that even if Zimplats is said to have ceased operations in Zimbabwe, that settlement will continue to exist.
They have built houses for their staff, it is actually a town that they have built. But those coming from China, they have no intention to stay here, they have no intention to transform the place from the way they found it and turn it into a better place.

White employers are treating Black workers better than Chinese employers in Zimbabwe. Former lawmaker Killer Zivhu shared how his cousin, who works for a Chinese boss, has to sleep in his car and cook his own meals while the bosses enjoy luxury. Chinese investors in Zimbabwe, especially in the mining sector, are under fire for mistreating employees and not following the country's laws. Chinese mining operations have been described as organized crime by some experts, with little benefit to local communities. This has raised concerns about the impact of Chinese investment in Zimbabwe.

White Employers Treat Black Workers Better Than Chinese, Says Killer Zivhu

Stephen Chan, a professor of world politics at SOAS, University of London, has warned Zimbabwe against “carelessly” antagonising Qatar.
This warning follows Mehluli Dube, a former Fidelity Printers official, who secured the attachment of Al Jazeera’s property after being implicated in the “Gold Mafia” documentary, which exposed Zimbabwe’s gold smuggling syndicates.
Episode 2, titled “Smoke and Mirrors,” accused Dube of corruptly signing off licenses for gold smuggling, allegedly receiving US$3,000 per month.
Dube claims the documentary damaged his reputation and sought a court order to attach Al Jazeera’s property as part of a defamation claim against the “peregrini respondent” (an international party not domiciled within the court’s jurisdiction).
Justice Siyabona Musithu granted Dube’s request in a ruling at the Harare High Court. Musithu said that the case was of public interest and deserved to be tested in court to determine the validity of the allegations.
He affirmed that the High Court has jurisdiction, and thus, Al Jazeera’s property could indeed be held as requested.
Posting on X, Chan suggested the lawsuit might be sponsored by Zimbabwean authorities as revenge against Al Jazeera for exposing corruption among the elite.
He warned that such a move could backfire, considering Qatar’s substantial international influence.
He wrote:

An interesting lawsuit. Whether it has merit, the courts will decide. If it is somehow a ‘sponsored’ suit in revenge against Al Jazeera, it should be kept in mind Qatar’s huge international influence. Not a country to pick a fight with carelessly.

Al Jazeera, a state-funded broadcaster based in Doha, Qatar, is used by the Gulf State as a powerful tool to advance its foreign policy through public diplomacy.
By broadcasting news and perspectives that align with its interests, Qatar can influence public opinion and elite views both regionally and internationally.
Several countries have restricted Al Jazeera. Egypt has banned Al Jazeera since 2013, accusing it of inciting violence.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have blocked Al Jazeera’s websites and channels.
Bahrain has restricted Al Jazeera’s broadcasts, and Israel has called for the closure of Al Jazeera’s Jerusalem bureau and blocked its transmission.
These restrictions are often part of broader political conflicts and accusations of biased or provocative coverage.

Zimbabwe is warned not to fight with Qatar over a documentary about gold smuggling. An official mentioned in the documentary went to court to sue Al Jazeera, the broadcaster, for defamation. The court allowed him to attach Al Jazeera's property. A professor warned that Zimbabwe should not anger Qatar, who has a lot of power internationally, by suing the broadcaster. Al Jazeera is known for influencing public opinion, and some countries have even banned or restricted it. In the end, the lawsuit could cause more trouble for Zimbabwe if they are not careful.
