Mighty Warriors players have reportedly received bonuses from ZIFA for participating in the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship which took place in South Africa from 4 to 15 October 2023.
<a href="https://www.soccer24.co.zw/2023/10/20/mighty-warriors-get-their-bonuses-for-participating-in-cosafa-womens-championship/">Soccer24</a> reported that the Zimbabwean national women’s football team players received over US$2 000 each in daily allowances, winning bonuses and appearance fees.
The players will not receive any money from COSAFA after the regional football body announced this week that the tournament had no sponsors.
Mighty Warriors goalkeeper Cynthia Shonga, who was named the best goalkeeper at the tournament, and other individual award winners, received R20 000 each from COSAFA.
Meanwhile, the Mighty Warriors finished fourth at the tournament despite having spent the past two years without participating in international football tournaments.

Mighty Warriors Players Receive Bonuses From ZIFA For Participating At COSAFA Tournament

The Mighty Warriors defeated Namibia 2-0 in a COSAFA Women’s Championship match played at Dobsonville Stadium in South Africa on Monday, 09 October.
This was the Mighty Warriors’s second successive win at the tournament after beating Lesotho 1-0 in their opening Group C match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium last week.
The <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Shadreck_Mlauzi">Shadreck Mlauzi</a>-coached side has accumulated six points in two matches and now sits two points above second-placed Botswana.
Zimbabwe scored through captain <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Rudo_Neshamba">Rudo Neshamba</a> in the 18th minute and vice-captain Nobukhosi Ncube in the 57th minute.
Speaking to the media after the match, Mlauzi said he was impressed by how the Mighty Warriors handled the Namibians. The Herald quoted Mlauzi as saying:

This is the competitiveness that we have been talking about all along. We need to continue on this trajectory. I am impressed with how we carried ourselves in this match.
It was a very difficult game as we expected it to be. We needed to avoid mistakes in all the departments and be compact.
We were nearer to flawlessness in the initial stages of the game but we rarely troubled their goalkeeper.
But I am happy we managed to switch on and got these goals. We now need to remain focused as we need to continue being competitive in this tournament.
This win is very critical in terms of where we want to be as a team.

The Mighty Warriors can finish as the group leaders if they avoid defeat against Botswana in their final pool match tomorrow.

Mighty Warriors Beat Namibia To Top Group C At COSAFA Women’s Championship

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee has announced the Mighty Warriors squad for the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship.
The tournament will be played from 4 to 15 October 2023 in South Africa.
The Warriors technical team comprises Shadreck Mlauzi (Head coach), Yohane Chikaola (Assistant coach), Sithethelelwe Sibanda (Assistant coach), Ndega Matsika (Goalkeepers coach), Brenda Chaora (Strength &amp; Conditioning Coach) Portia Chiota (Team Manager), Choice Dambuza (Kit Manager), Dr Margaret Maulana (Medical Doctor), Kudzanai Matavire (Physiotherapist), Dorothy Mugari (Safeguarding Officer) and Chioniso Mashakada (Media Officer).
The squad will leave Harare on Tuesday, 03 October, and their first match is scheduled for 06 October at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Johannesburg.

ZIFA Announces Mighty Warriors 2023 COSAFA Women's Championship

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Football_Association_(ZIFA)/">Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)</a> Normalisation Committee plans to announce the new coach for the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mighty_Warriors/">Mighty Warriors</a> on Thursday. The coach is expected to select players who will start training early next week in preparation for the COSAFA Women’s Championship, taking place from October 4 to 15 in South Africa’s Gauteng province.
This regional tournament marks Zimbabwe’s return to international women’s football after being reinstated. The Normalisation Committee has shortlisted three coaches, and interviews are scheduled for today and tomorrow. The committee, led by Lincoln Mutasa, will then proceed to appoint the chosen coach. Normalisation Committee member <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Rosemary_Mugadza/">Rosemary Mugadza</a> said:

We are expecting to appoint the coach on Thursday. We will have the interviews on Tuesday and Wednesday then on Thursday, we will put the coach in place.
As the Normalisation Committee, we want the Mighty Warriors to be in camp for two weeks. The team is scheduled to arrive in South Africa on the 3rd, so we hope by Monday they will be getting into camp.

Zimbabwe was unable to participate in the 2022 Women’s Championships due to a suspension. The Mighty Warriors have been placed in Group C alongside Namibia, Botswana, and Lesotho for the upcoming COSAFA Women’s Championship.
The tournament features 12 countries competing for the title, with the top team from each group securing a spot in the semi-finals and the best runner-up from all groups also advancing. South Africa, the hosts and record winners with seven titles, are in Group A with Malawi, Madagascar, and Eswatini. Group B consists of Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, and Comoros.
The Mighty Warriors, who won the championship in 2011, face the challenge of reclaiming past glory after failing to advance beyond the group stage in the previous tournament held in 2021. Defending champions Zambia and Tanzania, who have also won the regional title once, are among the competitive teams in the tournament.

ZIFA Normalisation Committee To Announce New Mighty Warriors Coach On Thursday

Zambia claimed a record seventh COSAFA Cup title on Saturday after beating Lesotho 1-0 in the tournament final, played at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
Chipolopolo have now won more COSAFA titles than Zimbabwe (6) after successfully defending the title they won last year.
The only goal of the match was scored by striker Moyela Libamba in the second half.
Zimbabwe missed the last two editions of the annual COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup after the country was suspended from international football by FIFA.
FIFA suspended Zimbabwe for “third-party interference” in February 2022 after the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) suspended the ZIFA board.
The suspension was lifted last week, with FIFA appointing a four-member normalisation committee that will be in charge of ZIFA until June 2024, at the latest.

Zambia Lift Record Seventh COSAFA Cup Title

Former Highlanders and Warriors striker, Mandla Balanda real name Mandlenkosi, has died aged 54. <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/mandla-balanda-dies/">The Chronicle</a> reported that Mandla died on Sunday after battling an unnamed illness for some time.
His death came just a few days after overseas-based former Zimbabwean footballers raised funds to assist with his medical bills. Netsai Moyo, who handed over the cash donation, confirmed the news of Balanda’s passing, which he had received from the family that morning. Moyo said:

Its true he is no longer with us. I got news from the family this morning. Sad news for Zimbabwean football.
</blockquote>
Balanda played for Eagles, Darryn T, and Highlanders, and had a successful stint in Botswana, where he is remembered as one of the best dribblers to have graced their shores. Balanda’s football career began at a young age, playing plastic football in the streets of Mpopoma, and he later attended John Tallach boarding school where he specialised in soccer.
Balanda’s professional career began when he joined Hunyani FC, where he played alongside his late brother Clement Balanda, Joe Mbarure, and Peter Kolly. He was called up to the under-20 national team and helped his team win the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) tournament.
He joined Harare-based Tornados FC, a club that was eventually sold to Darryn T textiles. He was then spotted by scouts from TaskFC, a Botswana-based outfit, and he joined the Francistown outfit to form a deadly partnership with Patrick Zibotshwa.
Balanda spent a season at TaskFC and then moved to Gaborone United FC, where he became a household name and helped the team clinch the Botswana Premier Soccer League championship. He returned to Zimbabwe and showcased his top-drawer skills at Highlanders, where he was a scoring machine. Balanda was spotted by veteran coach Ali “baba” Dube during a social soccer match and quickly joined the Amahlolanyama team, which had a galaxy of players. Balanda’s unforgettable game was when his side clashed with DeMbare in an epic battle at Babourfields.
The passing of Balanda is a great loss to Zimbabwean football, and he will be deeply missed by fans and fellow players alike. He is survived by his wife Roselyn Dube and five children. Balanda was born in 1969 and hailed from Nkayi in Matabeleland North province. He was a Christian and had a successful career as a panel beater and spray painter after quitting soccer.

Former Warriors, Highlanders Striker Mandla Balanda Dies

Zimbabwe will not take part in the 2022 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup tournament set to be held in Durban, South Africa, next month.
COSAFA has announced that only Zimbabwe will not participate in the regional tournament due to their ongoing FIFA suspension. COSAFA said:

The regional championship will be contested for the 21st time having made its debut in 1997 and will this year feature 13 of the 14 COSAFA nations. Only Zimbabwe will be missing due to their ongoing FIFA suspension.

The draw is set to be held at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 14 June.
The tournament runs from 5-17 July and will again feature last year’s losing finalists Senegal as the guest nation.
CAF recently kicked Zimbabwe out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers because of the country’s suspension from international football by FIFA.

Warriors Out Of 2022 COSAFA Cup Tournament

Nine members of the Zimbabwe Under-17 national football team have failed tests that are conducted to determine the ages of players allowed at age-group tournaments.
Of the 25 players who were in camp, preparing for the African Union Sports Council Region Five Youth Games, nine of the footballers failed the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans, which were conducted this week.
The number represents 36 per cent of the players who have been in camp preparing for the tournament set for Maseru, in Lesotho, from next Tuesday.
The Young Warriors are only returning to action after they were thrown out of the COSAFA Cup last year, again, over age-cheating allegations.
However, ZIFA questioned their expulsion, from the tournament, insisting their tests had given all the players the clearance to feature in the regional tournament. The association said, in a statement, shortly after the team’s expulsion:

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Football_Association_(ZIFA)">Zimbabwe Football Association</a> received with great disappointment, the correspondence from COSAFA to the effect that our Under 17 team has been disqualified from 2020 edition after one of the players failed a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test.
This is, indeed, surprising and questionable since we carried out similar tests on the boys and disqualified six for failing to satisfy the bone fusion criteria, taking only those determined to be of the correct age.
</blockquote>
The association said it will conduct further investigations on how the six, who were dropped, failed the tests.
ZIFA added that all the players that travelled for the tournament were tested at a reputable MRI centre in Harare prior to their departure and the centre used a powerful 1.5 T machine.
The association said it had appealed against the CAF and COSAFA decision adding “we are confident that we did not deliberately breach regulations governing the Under-17 tournament.”
The saga resulted in the Sports and Recreation Commission suspending ZIFA chief executive, Joseph Mamutse.
Zimbabwe is scheduled to play hosts Lesotho, Eswatini and Madagascar in Group A.

9 Young Warriors Fail Age Tests

Mighty Warriors coach Sithetheliwe Sibanda has commended the team’s performance at the ongoing COSAFA Women Championships in South Africa despite crashing out of the tournament in the group stages.
The Mighty Warriors finished second in their pool after defeating South Sudan 2-1 and Botswana 3-0 but failed to secure a place in the knockout stages due to an inferior goal difference to Malawi.
In an interview after the Botswana match, Sibanda said she was happy with her players’ positive attitude and the work rate that they showed in the game. She said:

We needed to restore our pride. We started off very shaky in our first games, with a lot of rust, to be honest.
Sometimes you try pushing the players and you can see they are trying but they are very rusty.
I’m happy that at least today, they tried very much. There were a lot of positives than negatives versus this Botswana outfit.
We know what we were up against and that there would be a lot of pressure in this game as both teams were looking for an outright win.
… As a coach, I’m happy with how we played today as we managed to rectify some of the issues and also to try out some different combinations as we are approaching the AWCON qualifiers.

The Mighty Warriors had a bad start as they were thrashed 3-0 by Tanzania in their opening match.
For the second time in a row, the Mighty Warriors have failed to go beyond the group stages.

Mighty Warriors' Performance Satisfies Coach

Former Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president, Philip Chiyangwa, says he will quit football administration when his term of office at COSAFA comes to an end in December this year.
Chiyangwa, who was elected president of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) in December 2016, also said he is not interested in seeking a return to the ZIFA presidency.
Speaking to The Herald on Thursday, the ZANU PF legislator said he would now concentrate on his political engagements, including leading the fund-raising drive for the party ahead of the 2023 polls. Said Chiyangwa:

I’m not coming back to ZIFA, I’m also not standing for re-election, at the end of my COSAFA (presidential) term, I’m not standing for that one.
I’m leaving, I have a bigger responsibility in my country, here in Zimbabwe, the President (Mnangagwa) has appointed me as one of the chief strategists, for now, and 2023, so I’m in a senior position to determine the life of our party, the fundraising efforts, etc.
For me, it was a good experience (in football administration), you leave for others to take over.

He said by the time he left ZIFA, after withdrawing from the second round of a presidential poll he was trailing to his opponent, and eventual association leader, Felton Kamambo, in December 2018, his race, in the domestic game, had been run.

Chiyangwa To Retire From Football Administration

Zimbabwe’s senior women’s football team, the Mighty Warriors, has been drawn in Group B of the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship alongside Botswana, Tanzania and South Sudan.
For the fourth year in a row, the women’s senior tournament will take place in Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa from 15-26 September.
Banyana Banyana (South Africa), have won the last four championships and seven out of eight in all, with only Zimbabwe breaking their run-on home soil in 2011.
At last year’s COSAFA Women’s Championship, Zimbabwe returned home without a win after they lost to Tanzania and Botswana in the group stage to finish bottom of the pool with zero points.
The full group-stage draw is as follows:

Mighty Warriors 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship Opponents Revealed

The Warriors crashed out of the COSAFA Cup tournament on Tuesday afternoon after they lost 2-1 to Senegal at the Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Zimbabwe drew first blood in the third minute through a Qadr Amini penalty. However, the Lions of Teranga, who are playing as a guest nation at this tournament, equalised in the 44th minute.
The West Africans then got the winning goal two minutes before full-time to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
The Warriors amassed just two points from four Group B games – two draws and two losses.
Namibia and Senegal have progressed to the last four with seven points each while Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi head back home.
Meanwhile, Warriors coach Zdravko Logarusic has blamed fatigue for the 2-1 defeat to Senegal. In his post-match interview, the Croat said:

We played a number of matches in a short space of time and this was too much for the players, who have not played football in a long time.</blockquote>

Warriors Crash Out Of COSAFA Cup Tournament

The Warriors of Zimbabwe take on the Brave Warriors of Namibia at the ongoing COSAFA Cup tournament in South Africa this Sunday with head coach Zdravko Logarusic in the spotlight.
The Croat’s suitability for the national football team coaching job has been questioned in recent days after his Warriors served two uninspiring draws at the COSAFA tournament.
Zimbabwe played a lifeless draw in the opening match against Mozambique on Wednesday before pulling the match out of the fire having gone two goals down to share spoils with Malawi on Friday.
Goals from Blessing Sarupinda and Ben Musaka rescued a point for Zimbabwe, thus avoiding a humiliating defeat at the hands of The Flames.
Logarusic record with the Warriors is worrisome, to say the least, having won only one of his first 10 matches in charge of the senior national team.
Speaking after the draw with Malawi, the Croat blamed the inactivity of local football, saying he was preparing the players for the African Nations Championships (CHAN). He said:
<blockquote>I am happy that I finished with eight boys, who are playing in the local league. The local league did play since November 2019 and this is 2021.
Instead of playing 40 to 50 games since November 2019, they have played just five games. We brought these local-based players because we are preparing for CHAN next year.
From the 23 players that usually play for me, I have only brought one player. No one is going to win or lose a place in the team because of one game, but they must show consistency.
I have a plan, I am following my plan and I am following ideas. We have to think about the next game and we have to think about CHAN.</blockquote>
Initially, the plan for Logarusic was to use the COSAFA to fine-tune for World Cup qualifiers, which are tentatively set for September as well as Chan qualifiers.
And suddenly it looks like the Cosafa Cup has no bearing whatsoever on the World Cup qualifiers for the coach.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s crucial Group B encounter against Nambia will be played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. The kickoff is at 2 pm.
The Warriors complete their Group B matches against Senegal on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe Takes On Namibia With All Eyes On Loga

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Football_Team">Zimbabwe Warriors</a> shared spoils with the Flames of Malawi when they clashed in a COSAFA Cup match on South Africa on Friday afternoon.
The Warriors came from behind to draw 2-2 with Captain Ovidy Karuru displaying a Man of The Match performance.
Zimbabwe now have two points from two matches after forcing a 0-0 draw against Mozambique. 

The neighbours went to halftime with Malawi leading by a goal to nill.
They came back to top another goal five minutes into the second half.
Zimbabwe only responded in the 60th minute through Sarupinda.
Patrick Musaka equalised for the Warriors in the 79th minute.

COSAFA: Warriors Share Spoils With Flames Of Malawi

Zimbabwe were held to a drab goalless draw by Mozambique in the opening Group B match at the 2021 COSAFA Cup played in Port Elizabeth, South Africa on Wednesday afternoon.
The Warriors failed to create meaningful chances throughout the game, and the few half-chances that fell on their way were squandered.
On the other end, goalkeeper Washington Arubi was kept busy and had to make some vital saves to keep his side in the game.
Arubi, who was playing his first match for the national team in six years, thwarted an Abel Nhantumbo hit from range in the first minute, and again tipped over the crossbar a point-blank header from Estêvão Novela in the 8th minute.
Zimbabwe only started to come alive later on towards the half-hour mark with both Farai Matare and Ovidy Karuru coming close to goal.
However, it were the Mambas who were making huge efforts to get the best from their attacks going into the break.
The second half had a slow start from both ends, and the goalmouth incidents remained few and far between.
However, it was until the 78th when the Mambas got the ball into the back of the net. Unfortunately, the effort was ruled for an offside.
A few moments later, an unmarked Delic Murimba had a big chance falling on his way inside the box at the other end but missed his hit on the ball.
The game ended goalless with Zimbabwe holding on to their bragging rights of having never lost to Mozambique at COSAFA Cup tournaments.

COSAFA Cup: Warriors Starting XI Against Mozambique Named

Warriors coach Zdravko Logarusic, who was denied entry into South Africa on Monday morning because he did not have a valid visa, is set to join the rest of the squad in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) after securing the visa on Tuesday morning.
The Croat was detained at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Monday morning due to visa issues.
The squad proceeded to the COSAFA Cup host city with only assistant coach Tonderai Ndiraya and goalkeepers’ trainer Tembo Chuma.
Co-assistant coach, Lloyd Chitembwe didn’t travel since he’s reportedly blacklisted by South African immigration for previous transgressions.
A ZIFA source told the Chronicle that Logarusic is expected to arrive in the Eastern Cape in time for the team’s 2 pm training session. Said the source:
<blockquote>The visa glitch has been addressed. Coach Loga has been granted a visa and will arrive on time for the team’s 2 pm training session in Gqeberha. The good thing is that the guys will train under the coach.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, ZIFA on Monday blamed the travelling agent for the visa gaffe, saying they were misled into believing that the Croatian will get his visa at the point of entry.

Warriors Coach, Zdravko Logarusic, Finally Gets SA Visa

Warriors coach Zdravko Logarusic was on Monday denied entry into South Africa upon arrival at the OR Tambo International Airport because he did not have a valid South African visa, ZIFA has confirmed.
In a statement on Monday afternoon, ZIFA Communications and Competitions Manager Xolisani Gwesela apologised to football fans and the nation at large for the gaffe, saying the association is now working on ensuring that Logarusic joins the team in Port Elizabeth as soon as possible. The statement read:
<blockquote>VISA CHALLENGES FOR COACH ZDRAVKO LOGARUSIC IN SOUTH AFRICA
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) would like to inform the football fraternity and the nation that the Zimbabwe Senior National Men’s team the Warriors left this Monday morning for Port Elizabeth, South Africa via Johannesburg for the upcoming COSAFA Cup. The team arrived safely in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
The Association would however like to inform the nation that the head coach Zdravko Logarusic has been denied entry upon arrival at Oliver Tambo International Airport on the basis of him not holding a valid visa for the host country, South Africa.
This is despite the fact that we confirmed with visa and travel agencies in Zimbabwe prior to departure and we were assured that as long he possessed a valid Zimbabwean workers permit, he would be allowed entry in South Africa.
We were then dismayed upon arrival when we were told by Immigration officials that only service and diplomatic holders from Croatia were exempt from South African visa requirements.
This was not been anticipated by the Association and the travel agent has availed a letter of apology after this debacle.
The Agent has also agreed to reimburse expenses resulting from this anomaly. Unfortunately, it is very clear that valuable training time has been lost as a result of this gaffe.
The Association is now saddled with ensuring that the coach gets a visa and proceed and join the team in Port Elizabeth in the shortest time possible.
Meanwhile, assistant coach Tonderai Ndiraya will prepare the team in the absence of Coach Lloyd Chitembwe who was never pencilled to travel to South Africa as a result of his non-authorisation to travel to South Africa.
We apologise to the nation for the inconvenience, however, the team remains in high spirits and ready to compete to everyone’s best abilities.
We would like to assure the nation that the Association is making frantic efforts to remedy the situation.</blockquote>

ZIFA Speaks On Logarusic South African Visa Debacle

Warriors’ head coach Zdravko Logarusic and his assistant Lloyd Chitembwe have been barred from entering South Africa ahead of the COSAFA tournament.
It is believed the Croatian did not have a visa allowing him to enter South Africa, while Harare City coach Chitembwe is said to be blacklisted for yet to be known reasons.
This has left the squad with co-assistant coach Tonderayi Ndiraya and goalkeepers’ coach Tembo Chuma.
ZIFA communications and competitions manager Xolisani Gwesela could not shed light on the reasons behind the drama. He said:

Warriors Coaches Barred From Entering South Africa

The 20-man Warriors squad left the country on Monday for the COSAFA Cup tournament to be held in South Africa from 7 to 18 July.
There were some late changes to the squad, with Perfect Chikwende, Evans Rusike and Godknows Murwira missing out on medical grounds. Nelson Chadya was dropped while Delic Murimba was a late addition upfront.
Zimbabwe is in Group C alongside Mozambique, Namibia and guests Senegal.

ZIFA Names Warriors Squad For COSAFA

Warriors coach Zdravko Logarusic says he will use the upcoming COSAFA Cup tournament to find strengthen the squad for world cup qualifiers as well as the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
Zimbabwe has won the COSAFA Cup a record six times but extending that record is not a priority for Logarusic who revealed that he will give a chance to players who didn’t play a lot of minutes during the qualification for AFCON.
Speaking during Episode 23 of the COSAFA Show, the 55-year-old Croat said he will also use the tournament to see who will play in qualification for the next CHAN competition. He said:
<blockquote>We are not going with the strongest squad. We didn’t call about 14 or 15 players, who are usually the top players in the Zimbabwe national football team. We have given a chance to other players, who must prove themselves.
We are not talking about ‘are we going to win or are we not going to win (the Cup)’. We are in this tournament to try and make our team stronger for the World Cup qualification and to make our squad strong for the upcoming AFCON.
And we are also using this competition to see who will play in qualification for the next CHAN competition.</blockquote>
The 20th edition of the COSAFA Cup returns to the football calendar after it had to be cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is scheduled to run from July 7-18 in South Africa.
Logarusic is expected to announce the COSAFA squad during the course of the week.
Zimbabwe has been drawn against guests Senegal, Namibia and Mozambique in Group C of the competition.

Logarusic Reveals COSAFA Targets

Warriors fringe players are set to get an opportunity to showcase their talents in national team colours at this year’s COSAFA Cup set for 7-18 July in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.
The Warriors have been drawn to play against West African guest nation Senegal, Mozambique and 2015 Cosafa Cup winners Namibia in Group C.
Zimbabwe will unlikely to field its star players in the COSAFA Cup as the tournament will be played outside the FIFA window.
The likes of Knowledge Musona, Marshal Munetsi, Tinotenda Kadewere, Teenage Hadebe and Marvelous Nakamba will not be called up even though they are on their off-season break.
Warriors team manager, Wellington Mpandare, revealed that peripheral players will be considered for the COSAFA tournament. He said:
<blockquote>It does not help to have Knowledge, Tino, Munetsi and Teenage when we want to try other players in their positions, if those players are called up it means they have to play and besides COSAFA is not on the FIFA window.</blockquote>
Mpandare indicated that the Warriors will head into camp on 27 June once the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) gives the green light.

Zimbabwe are the most successful teams in the Cosafa Cup with six wins since the tournament started in 1997. They are followed by Zambia (five), South Africa (four), Angola (three) and Namibia (one).
The Warriors last won the Cosafa Cup in 2018 when they defeated Zambia 4-2 after extra time in the final played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa.

COSAFA Cup An Opportunity For Fringe Players - Mpandare

A witness has accused former ZIFA President, Philip Chiyangwa of conniving with the Zimbabwe Republic Police to <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/12/09/kamambo-chiyangwa-bribery-case-in-new-twist/">initiate a bribery case against the incumbent president Felton Kamambo.</a>
Chiyangwa who is the current COSAFA president accused Kamambo of bribing Zifa councillors to win the association’s elections in 2018.
Key State witness Robert Matoka, a former police inspector, alleged that Chiyangwa was the one who wrote the affidavits, implicating Kamambo, which he was later forced to sign.
Matoka further told the court that the police officers dealing with the matter also threatened him with arrest if he refused to append his signature on a statement that had already been written for him.
Matoka also told the court that the two first clashed during their time on the Zifa board when Chiyangwa was the then president while Kamambo was a board member. He said:
<blockquote>He (Kamambo) clashed with Chiyangwa after asking the Zifa board to hold elections as the term of office for the then Zifa board had elapsed.
Chiyangwa was not happy and fired him from Zifa and banned him from all football activities.
He (Kamambo) submitted his papers for nomination (for the elections), but his candidature was declined. He then approached Fifa to allow him to participate and the call was granted.</blockquote>
Matoka who was Kamambo’s campaign manager also said the money paid to ZIFA councillors which Chiyangwa used as the basis of the bribery case, was for councillors’ transport to meet up with Kamambo and his campaign team.
Matoka said after the ban was lifted by Fifa, Kamambo didn’t have enough time to campaign as it was only 10 days before the election date.
Resultantly, Kamambo’s team decided to congregate councillors but since some could not use their own money for transport, Kamambo had to send them transport fares.
Michael Reza, representing the State, asked the court to declare Matoka a hostile witness, saying he had shifted from his earlier statements.
Magistrate Bianca Makwande postponed the matter to today to consider the application to declare Matoka hostile.

Chiyangwa Accused Of Conniving With Police In Kamambo Bribery Case

Zifa president Felton Kamambo on Wednesday denied that he bribed prospective voters in the 2018 ZIFA presidential elections adding that his predecessor, Philip Chiyangwa is the one who bribed prospective candidates.
Chiyanngwa who is the COSAFA president dragged Kamambo to court complaining about how he won the presidential race in 2018.
Kamambo, however, denied the allegations this Wednesday with his Defence Counsel claiming Chiyangwa also bribed prospective voters.
Chiyangwa denied the allegations and challenged anyone with incriminating evidence to present it while insisting that Kamambo violated ZIFA statutes by offering inducements during the election process.
Kamambo denies the allegations arguing that he did not violate any ZIFA statutes by paying allowances to members of the Electoral College for them to attend crucial meetings.
Kamambo ended Chiyangwa’s 3-year tenure when he polled 35 votes against Chiyangwa’s 24 resulting in a re-run as each candidate failed to reach the mandated two-thirds majority.
Chiyangwa, who is a Zanu PF legislator for Zvimba South, withdrew from the election and conceded defeat and Kamambo was declared the new ZIFA president.
Kamambo’s administration has come under fire for a bevvy over a number of issues which are mainly administrative in nature.
It has also been at loggerheads with other international football boards over poor management of funds.

Kamambo, Chiyangwa Bribery Case In New Twist

The Zimbabwe Under-20 national football team was booted out of the Cosafa Championships despite beating Lesotho 4-1 at Gelvandale Stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on Tuesday afternoon.
Strikes from Tapiwa Mandinyenya, Bill Antonio and Kelvin Mangiza plus an own goal by Siyabonga Monyaka gave the Young Warriors their only victory at the tournament.
The Young Warriors amassed a total of four points in Group A but failed to reach the semi-finals of this regional tournament.
Zimbabwe lost 2-0 to Mozambique, having drawn 2-2 against South Africa in their opening two group matches before thrashing Lesotho but it was too little, too late as they failed to reach the semi-finals.
Mozambique finished top of the group with seven points, following a 0-0 draw against South Africa yesterday to proceed to the semi-finals.
Only Mozambique progressed to the last four from Group A.
Mozambique and other group winners from Group B and C will be joined by the best runners up across all three groups to complete the semi-finals quartet.
The two finalists will qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals to be played in Mauritania.
Meanwhile, the Young Warriors are expected back home on 10 December.

Young Warriors Lose To Mozambique

Young Warriors coach, Tonderai Ndiraya, has decided to abandon the conservative approach he adopted against South Africa and take the game to the opponent in tomorrow’s match against Mozambique in the COSAFA Championships in Port Elizabeth.
Ndiraya believes the Young Warriors provided themselves with a cushion when they took a point from South Africa, albeit from a winning position on Thursday afternoon. He said:
<blockquote>We were a bit cautious, a bit conservative but we will change our plan on Sunday and take the game to Mozambique.
Mozambique are on top now, with three points, so that means we have to beat them.
… we will go all out in attack, in search of a win and, hopefully, we can get that win on Sunday.</blockquote>
The Young Warriors scored twice with Panashe Mutimbanyoka and Lexington Mujokoro on target but South Africa’s Amajita responded twice to snatch a point.
In Friday’s results, defending champions Zambia beat Namibia 1-0 in Group B opening match while Malawi edged Comoros 1-0 in another group B encounter.

Ndiraya To Go 'Gung-ho' Against Mozambique

Zimbabwe’s Young Warriors began their COSAFA U20 Championship with a 2-2 draw against Amajita of South Africa on Thursday afternoon.
Zimbabwe drew first blood through Panashe Mutimbanyoka who opened the scoring after just eight minutes into the first stanza.
South Africa were unable to find a reply in the opening 45 minutes, but they were back on level terms shortly after the halftime break through SuperSport United attacker Oswin Appollis’ finish.
It was Zimbabwe who got the next goal eight minutes later courtesy of a strike from Lexington Mujokoro.
Amajita, however, got an equaliser in second-half stoppage time, with Mohlala Makola getting the important goal.
