The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has confirmed that an anti-tank mine, a remnant from the liberation struggle, caused the tragic explosion that claimed three lives in Binga on Wednesday.
In response to questions from <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/anti-tank-mine-caused-binga-explosion-says-zna/">The Herald</a>, ZNA’s deputy director of army public relations, Lieutenant Colonel Tichafa Mungofa, said the vehicle, which belonged to the Binga Rural District Council, hit the undetonated mine exposed by recent rains while the driver was attempting to avoid a pothole.
Tragically, three people lost their lives and three others sustained injuries in the explosion near Sebungwe Mouth.
The injured people, all employees of the Binga RDC, included driver Micka Munsaka (50), Obert Brown Munkuli, and Nonsern Munsaka.
The three employees had visited the home of Binga RDC chief executive officer Joshua Muzamba in Sebungwe Mouth for some work and were on their way back to Binga Centre when the unfortunate incident occurred. Said Lieutenant Colonel Mungofa:

The Zimbabwe National Army would like to confirm that a vehicle belonging to Binga Rural District Council was hit by an anti-tank mine at Sebungwe Sanctuary in Binga on January 8, 2025, at 5 PM.
Investigations revealed that the place of the incident was not marked as a minefield and that the anti-tank mine could be a remnant from the liberation struggle, exposed due to incessant rains and weather conditions.
Due to potholes on the section of the road where the incident occurred, the driver manoeuvred off the road, and unfortunately, the vehicle was hit by the anti-tank mine, triggering the explosion.

Circumstances are that on Wednesday at around 8:30 AM, Micka Munsaka drove a Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the Binga RDC Campfire Department from Binga Centre to Sebungwe Mouth.
After finishing their work around 5 PM, Munsaka and his colleagues left the home of Binga RDC chief executive officer Joshua Muzamba, choosing an alternative shortcut road due to muddy conditions on the main road.
During their journey, the vehicle struck an unexposed landmine, causing a devastating explosion that propelled the vehicle upwards before it landed on its right side.
Tragically, a woman in the loading box sustained severe head and body injuries, and she died on the spot.
Another passenger, Wonder, lost both legs, while Yuna suffered a fractured leg. Both victims were bleeding profusely.
A local businessman living in Sebungwe Mouth rushed to the scene and rescued Wonder and Yuna, transporting them to Simatelele Clinic. They were then transferred to Binga District Hospital.
Unfortunately, Wonder succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital, and Yuna passed away upon arrival.

Zimbabwe National Army Confirms Anti-Tank Mine Caused Binga Explosion

Three people, including a 14-year-old girl, were killed and three others injured when a landmine exploded near the Zambezi River in Binga’s Sebungwe area on Wednesday afternoon. The victims were travelling in a Binga Rural District Council vehicle.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Ndavaningi Mangwana confirmed the incident on Friday via X, saying it occurred at Sebungwe Narrows in Simatelele, under Chief Siachilaba. He said:

The explosion killed a 14-year-old girl on the spot and two men passed away in transit to Binga Rural District Hospital.
The de-mining team from the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) is on the ground checking for other landmines within the premises.

Mangwana said the landmine was on the roadside connecting Mabwe and Sebungwe Narrows. He added:

It seems it was always being missed by a few inches, as its location was just close to the traffic tracks.

Mangwana said the landline was not recently planted, but rather a remnant from past conflicts, a “wartime legacy.”
According to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/three-dead-three-injured-as-binga-council-vehicle-hits-landmine/">Chronicle</a>, the Binga Rural District Council vehicle, carrying three council employees to Sebungwe, struck a landmine on its return journey.

The driver took an alternative route due to impassable mud on the main road. The explosion, which killed three and injured others, including passengers who had requested a lift, occurred on this detour.
The landmine is believed to be a remnant from the 1970s Rhodesian Bush War when an estimated 3 million anti-personnel mines were laid along Zimbabwe’s borders.
While most have been cleared, some remain active, posing a significant danger decades later.
Organizations like ZIMAC, HALO Trust, Mines Advisory Group, Norwegian People’s Aid, and APOPO are working to make Zimbabwe mine-free by 2025.

14-Year-Old Girl Among Three Killed In Binga Landmine Blast

A 49-year-old woman from Binga appeared before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court facing charges of rape or, alternatively, procuring under Section 83 of the Criminal Law [Codification and Reform] Act, Chapter 9:23.
The woman is accused of facilitating the rape of her younger sister by her husband.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), in August 2018, the accused invited her sister to stay with her in Gwanda, promising to enrol her in school.
In October 2018, the accused left for Binga, leaving her sister alone with her husband. The sister never attended school during this time.
When the complainant inquired about her schooling, her brother-in-law claimed that he had been cheated on by his wife and that the accused had agreed to offer her sister as compensation for not bearing children.
From October to November 2018, the husband allegedly had non-consensual sexual intercourse with the complainant multiple times.
Upon the accused’s return to Gwanda, the husband continued to assault the complainant in her presence.
The accused reportedly gave the complainant a red concoction to drink after these encounters. In August 2021, the complainant attempted to escape but was caught and returned, with threats issued against her life.
She ultimately managed to flee later that month and informed her parents about her situation, but no action was taken. The complainant filed a police report on June 17, 2024, in Bulawayo.
The accused appeared before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was remanded in custody to October 4, 2024.

A lady from Binga is in trouble for letting her husband rape her younger sister. The lady invited her sister to live with her but left her alone with her husband. The husband, without asking, hurt the younger sister multiple times. When the sister tried to run away, she was caught, threatened, and given a strange drink. She managed to escape and told her parents, but nothing happened. The younger sister finally told the police in 2024. The woman from Binga was arrested and will be in jail until October 4, 2024.

Binga Woman Arrested For Facilitating Rape Of Younger Sister

Two fishermen suffered severe burns when a devastating fire broke out at the Sengwa Fishing Camp in Binga, Matabeleland North Province, last week.
The blaze destroyed property worth an estimated $40,000 and razed at least 30 huts to the ground.
According to the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200029477/binga-fishing-camp-engulfed-by-fire">Southern Eye</a>, the incident has left the affected fishermen and their families in dire need of assistance.
Tyunga-Luunga Ward 1 councillor Minister Sinamunsanga confirmed the tragedy and appealed for help to support the victims. He stated:

We have sent reports of the incident to all relevant offices seeking assistance for all the affected households. We kindly request all well-wishers to come forth in cash and kind. Any form of assistance will go a long way towards cushioning the affected families.

Investigations suggest that the fire may have been sparked by the explosion of a fuel container in one of the huts, leading to the rapid spread of the inferno.
The Sengwa Fishing Camp situated on the shores of Lake Kariba, sustains the livelihoods of many families residing in the surrounding Tyunga, Sinakatenge, Luunga and Siabuwa areas.
The camp’s name is derived from the Sengwa River, which flows through the Gokwe District before emptying into the Zambezi River.

A big fire happened at a fishing camp in Zimbabwe. Two fishermen got hurt and lots of huts were destroyed. The fire may have started from a fuel container. People in the area need help because they lost their homes and things. The camp is called Sengwa and is near Lake Kariba. The Sengwa River flows into the Zambezi River. Authorities are asking for donations to help the families affected by the fire.

Binga South Member of Parliament, Fanuel Cumanzala (CCC), has claimed that the government continues to deploy teachers who cannot speak Tonga in Binga District, yet there are unemployed Tonga-speaking teachers.
Cumanzala raised the issue in the National Assembly and also challenged the Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerai Moyo to explain government policy regarding the deployment of Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers to Binga District. He said (via <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200027186/binga-mp-fumes-over-non-tonga-speaking-teachers">Southern Eye</a>):

Some infants are being taught by teachers who cannot converse in Tonga, while there are qualified Tonga-speaking teachers who are still awaiting recruitment and are on the waiting list.
My question is, are there any specific guidelines regarding this process I have evidence that at the time of writing this question, Harare was still deploying some teachers to Binga.
I interviewed them and they said they were from Harare. Regarding the teachers, I have a database of local teachers.
I attached the database to the question which I sent through the Journals Office so that the ministry would appreciate that I was not just raising this question.
I have evidence that this was still the case. Having said that I would like to appreciate that there has been some movement on the database.
About three-quarters of the people on the database have now been employed. This is a significant improvement.

In response, Minister Moyo told parliamentarians that Binga was one of the first districts to be considered for decentralised deployment.
This entails that teachers from the area are to be considered first and made to sign four-year contracts which compel them not to transfer within that period.

Binga South MP Quizzes Minister Over Deployment Of Non-Tonga Speaking Teachers

A 62-year-old pastor from Hope In Christ Church in Binga, Matabeleland North Province, appeared before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court to face assault charges after physically attacking a fellow pastor last month.
On April 16, 2024, Misheck Ndlovu and the complainant attended a pastors’ meeting at Kabwe Children’s Home.
Following a misunderstanding, Ndlovu was expelled from the meeting. However, instead of going home, he remained near the gate, nursing his wounded pride.
Michael Nsingo, another individual, approached Ndlovu at the gate and engaged in conversation. The complainant then invited Nsingo inside, which angered Ndlovu.
Fueled by anger, Ndlovu physically assaulted the complainant, knocking him to the ground and strangling him. Only the intervention of two pastors prevented further harm.
Ndlovu was subsequently arrested, and the court sentenced him to 14 months in prison, with 6 months suspended for 5 years. He will serve 8 months effectively.

Binga Pastor (62) Attacks, Strangles Fellow Clergyman

A 16-year-old boy allegedly raped his 17-year-old cousin before brutally killing her on 26 February this year.
As reported by <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/16-year-old-rapes-cousin-chops-body-into-pieces/">The Sunday News</a>, the incident occurred in Siamputeni Village 44, Chishizya area under Chief Sinamagonde in Binga District, Matabeleland North Province.
After killing her cousin, the boy allegedly chopped her head and left limb with an axe before removing pieces of flesh with a knife from her back, right thigh, and abdomen, leaving the intestines exposed.
He then dragged the dismembered body to the edge of a maize field where he dumped it.
The deceased’s head and left lower limb were found on the ground near the footpath, approximately 10 metres from the body.
A piece of flesh, believed to be from the deceased’s abdomen, was also located on the same footpath, about 30 metres away.
However, the flesh from the right thigh could not be located.
In his warned and cautioned statement to the police, the teenager admitted to the murder.
He claimed that he murdered the girl because she had threatened to report him to her mother for alleged sexual abuse.
The boy allegedly confessed under interrogation to raping his cousin after watching pornography.
Asked by the police why he allegedly killed her, the boy said:
<blockquote>
I did this after watching pornography on my phone. I forced the deceased to have sexual intercourse with me.
Then I murdered her using an axe. I beheaded her because some people told me they wanted a human head and leg in Kwekwe, where I used to live so that they could give me money.
</blockquote>
The boy appeared before Binga resident magistrate Victor Mpofu facing two counts of rape and one of murder.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 11 March 2014.
The magistrate said it was the most brutal attack “he had ever seen”.
Prosecuting, Quiet Mpofu said that on 26 February around midday, the boy and her cousin were at their homestead.
The accused was watching videos on his mobile phone while sleeping in one of the bedrooms, and the now-deceased was also sleeping on the veranda.
The two allegedly had a misunderstanding over a phone, which resulted in the accused smashing the deceased’s cellphone.
The girl then went to sleep in the house. The accused, who had been allegedly watching pornographic videos, subsequently followed and grabbed her before ripping off her clothes and then raped her.
After being sexually abused the deceased told the accused person that she intended to report the matter to her mother, and then she went to sleep on the veranda again.
The accused person then took an axe and allegedly struck the deceased once on the neck thereby killing her instantly.
After that, he chopped off her head and left lower limb using the axe. He also cut off a piece of flesh from the deceased’s buttocks, and right thigh and removed a piece of flesh from the abdomen leaving the intestines exposed.
The accused washed the knife and placed it on the veranda before leaving the scene.
He was arrested while attempting to cross nearby Chizarira National Park.

16-year-old Boy Rapes And Kills Cousin, Chops Body Into Pieces

A 58-year-old private doctor based at Binga Centre, Matabeleland North Province, is accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old patient while her aunt waited for her outside the door.
As reported by <a href="https://bmetro.co.zw/rogue-doctor-58-rapes-patient-13-at-surgery/">B-Metro</a>, Jabulani Dube who runs a surgery at Binga Medical Centre appeared in court last Wednesday facing charges of raping a girl who had gone to his surgery for review, accompanied by her aunt.
Prosecutors allege the girl went for a review on 7 February 2024 at around 9 AM but Dube rescheduled their appointment to 8:30 PM.
The doctor allegedly asked the patient’s aunt to wait outside. Behind a closed door, he asked the patient to strip so that he could examine her. Reads a court record:

The doctor asked the minor to remove her skin tight and her panties and she complied as she thought that it was part of the examination.
The minor was also asked to open her legs whilst she was waiting to be checked the doctor unzipped his trousers and molested her.
</blockquote>
When the child felt something, she screamed which made her aunt check what was happening only to find out that the doctor was trying to block the minor and the minor ran away.
It is further alleged that the aunt went around looking for the child only to find her at home and she narrated the story which led to Dube’s arrest.
Dube will appear again at the Hwange Magistrate court on 22 February and he remains in custody.

Binga Doctor (58) Accused Of Raping Patient (13) At Surgery

A 47-year-old man from Kamativi under Chief Pashu in Binga District, Matabeleland North Province, has been arrested for allegedly keeping 93 snakes in a granary, reported <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/binga-man-found-with-93-snakes-in-granary/">The Sunday News</a>.
The suspect, Million Mukombwe, kept snakes which include pythons and spotted bush snakes.
Munkombwe told police officers that he kept the snakes because he wanted them to eat rats, termites and small insects that are harmful in his garden.
Police officers discovered the snakes in the granary after they had received a tip-off that Mukombwe was cultivating marijuana (mbanje) in his garden.
Munkombwe was found with 197 trees of mbanje that were approximately 29 centimetres in length.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Matabeleland North Province, Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the incident. He said:

Villagers are in shock after the arrest of one of them because he was domesticating snakes in his granary…
I would like to warn members of the public to resist this tendency of hunting animals or species because it is against the law of our country and it will also lead to some people being injured by the same species.
Actions like this result in a lack of trust among members of the community because traditionally, it’s unusual to find a person keeping snakes.
Let us also stop farming and selling weed because it is illegal in this country.

Munkombwe appeared at the Hwange magistrates court recently where he was remanded out of custody to 26 October for continuation of trial.

Binga Man Found With 93 Live Snakes Stashed In Granary

The newly commissioned Muchesu Coal Mining Company in Binga District, Matabeleland North Province, plans to construct a new railway line linking its plant with Kwekwe, as part of a broader investment drive to enhance economic activity and trade in the country.
According to The Herald, the plant will produce 10,000 tonnes of coke per month, and with such volumes, an investment in rail infrastructure is critical for facilitating transport and logistics efficiency. The company is owned by a UK-headquartered investor, Contango Holdings, which has so far invested US$20 million in the project.
President Mnangagwa officially commissioned the new mining venture on Monday. In his address, President Mnangagwa said:

They (Muchesu Mine) have promised to build a railway line from here in Binga to Kwekwe. They have also told me they will generate electricity that is enough to feed the country.
They have also promised to build quality roads, I say congratulations. Please do not die before you fulfil these promises.
</blockquote>
He said the government will support the project, which is in line with its economic transformation agenda and the country’s vision to achieve an upper-middle-income status by 2030.
Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who also attended the event stated that the commissioning of the Muchesu mine is a significant milestone for Binga, which will transform its economic fortunes. He added that the investment is a culmination of the re-engagement efforts spearheaded by President Mnangagwa, and the mine is a huge leap towards attaining a US$12 billion mining economy by year-end.
Similarly, Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando said the coming onstream of Muchesu is a reflection of the success of the mantra, “Zimbabwe is open for business” and President Mnangagwa’s philosophy of “leaving no one and no place behind.”

Muchesu Coal Mining Plans Railway Linking Binga And Kwekwe

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has named the victims of the Stallion Cruise Bus accident that occurred in Binga on Sunday July 16, 2023. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said five people were killed in the accident. Reads the statement:

The five (5) victims have been identified by their next of kin as listed:-

The bodies of the victims were taken to Binga District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should exercise extreme caution on the country’s roads and adhere to stipulated speed limits. Above all, operators should ensure that public service vehicles do not exceed their stipulated load capacity to safeguard lives on the roads.

Update: Police Name 5 Victims Of Stallion Cruise Bus Accident

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road accident that took place on Sunday, July 16, 2023. The accident happened in the morning near Masumo Bridge, Samende area, Binga. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police said a Stallion Cruise bus travelling from Siabuwa to Binga overturned in the accident. The number of people killed and injured has not yet been released. Reads the statement:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 16/07/23 in the morning near Masumo Bridge, Samende area, Binga in which a Stallion Cruise bus travelling from Siabuwa to Binga overturned. The number of people killed and injured will be released in due course.

In another case, the police in Murewa are requesting information that may help in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident. The incident resulted in the death of a 37-year-old man. He was found dead at the 107-kilometre peg along Harare-Nyamapanda road on July 15, 2023. The victim was hit by an unknown motorist who did not stop after the accident.
Police are appealing to the public for relevant information on the accident. 
These reports come just hours after ZRP confirmed two fatal road traffic accidents that occurred on July 13 and 14, 2023. The first accident happened at approximately 7:20 pm at the 18-kilometre mark along Harare-Shamva Road, where a Nissan Caravan carrying eight passengers veered off the road, overturned several times, and landed on its roof. Seven people died, and two others were injured. The second accident occurred at around 7:40 am on July 14 along Natview-Hobhouse Road, Mutare. Three pedestrians walking by the roadside were hit and killed by an Ateco Benz lorry that had veered off the road. The driver and two passengers on board, as well as another pedestrian, were injured.

Zimbabwe Police Confirm Fatal Accident In Binga

The opposition secessionist Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) party has accused Chief Sinamagonde of Binga South of attempting to prevent people from attending their rally in Chibila Village, Ward 22.
MRP said the police cleared the rally for 18 May 2023 but Chief Sinamagonde instructed his headmen to arrange meetings in their separate villages.
The opposition party said the traditional leader did this to prevent villagers from attending their political rally.
MRP’s council candidate Coaster Mathe told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/mrp-accuse-binga-chief-of-blocking-rally/">CITE</a> that before the rally, Chief Sinamaginde started telling villagers not to attend their rally “because they must support ZANU PF.” Said Mathe:

Nothing can stop Mthwakazi from going ahead but it was challenging to have the rally, which was supposed to start at 9 am and end at 4 PM.
Despite the chief’s efforts, we carried on with our rally with the people who were there.

Chairperson of the MRP Youth League, Mudenda Chilumbo, also claimed that Chief Sinamaonde tried to disrupt their rally. Said Mudenda:

There were eight meetings in one area so that people would be occupied but because the meetings had no agenda, some started protesting and others realised those meetings were a ploy to prevent them from coming to us.
Some people then left the meetings while some headmen who sympathise with us told the villagers they were acting under the chief’s orders to keep them.

However, when contacted for a comment, Chief Sinamagonde told CITE that MRP was trying to hurt his reputation. He said:

You must ask MRP if they came to me as chief of the area. Even after receiving police approval, they should have gone to me as the chief and informed me they will be meeting with people in the area.
I heard they were accusing me of withholding people from attending their rally.
I cannot deny anyone permission to attend rallies. As a chief, I lead everyone regardless of who they are.
How can I block people if people are the ones who don’t want to go, must I force them to attend rallies?

Chief Sinamagonde said he doesn’t know why MRP insulted him, adding he holds his own meetings to revive village structures as he is a new chief.

Mthwakazi Republic Party Accuses Binga Chief Of Blocking Rally

A minor earthquake hit the Lubimbi area in Binga on Sunday night and was felt by residents in Hwange.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0 and no damages to property were recorded, reported <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/earth-tremor-hits-hwange/">the Chronicle</a>.
Matabeleland North Province chief meteorological officer Austin Masikinye said the epicentre of the earthquake was Lubimbi in Binga District, close to Kamativi. He said:

An earthquake was felt in Hwange and Binga on March 5, 2023, at 2309hrs local time. The epicentre is in Binga, Lubimbi area near Kamativi.
No reports of damage were received, however, more inquiries would be made to determine its intensity in the locality and to determine the exact areas it was felt.

Residents in almost all Hwange town suburbs said they were shaken by underground movements on Sunday night.
Nolwandle Moyo from Ngumija and Prisca Mpofu, a resident of Cinderella township, about 10km from Ngumija, both said they felt the unusual movement from underground just after 10 PM.
Hwange Local Board spokesperson Dumisani Nsingo, who stays in Empumalanga, said:

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck South-Eastern Turkey and Northern Syria last month, killing 50 000 people, among them Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu.
MSD head of forecasting, James Ngoma said earth tremors are common in the Kariba area. He said:

Minor Earthquake Hits Binga, Felt In Hwange

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department (MSD)</a> of Zimbabwe has forecasted that most parts of the country will experience sunny weather conditions on Monday. 
In a weather report and forecast seen by Pindula News, MSD urged members to take safety precaution measures to avoid disasters associated with the rainy season. Reads the weather update:

Police in Binga have launched a manhunt for two suspects who allegedly fatally struck a 36-year-old man with logs and a spear accusing him of having love affairs with their wives.
The murder occurred in Lusulu, Binga on Wednesday last week.
Police have identified the accused as Polite Ndlovu (24) and Justice Ndlovu (22).
Acting Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Mahohoma said that the now-deceased, Stephen Mpofu (36), was attacked by the two while he was asleep in his bedroom hut with his wife.
He said the two were shouting outside threatening to kill Mpofu for allegedly having love affairs with their wives before they broke the door to the bedroom hut.
Mpofu tried to run away but one of the two suspects grabbed him. Said Asst Insp Mahohoma:

The suspects started assaulting him with logs and a spear. Mpofu’s wife phoned the village head who rushed to the scene and found the two still assaulting Mpofu who was lying in a pool of blood.
The village head tried to restrain the two from further assaulting him but they threatened him before they fled.
It was only after they left that the village head and Mpofu’s wife managed to get close to him and immediately took him to a nearby clinic but he died before they got to the clinic.

Binga Man Killed For Allegedly Dating Married Women

A 65-year-old man from Mutunda Village, Chief Siambuwa, Binga, was allegedly killed and his head skinned by five unidentified men on Wednesday last week.
Acting Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Mahohoma confirmed receiving the report.
He said the reason for the murder is yet to be ascertained and the suspected murderers are still at large.
Asst Insp Mahohoma said on Wednesday, the now deceased Amion Bube was at the fields with his wife until about 5 PM when he decided to go home leaving her behind.
The wife then followed after a while and as she approached their homestead she saw five men she could not identify running away from their homestead which was on fire.
When she got inside the homestead she saw her husband’s body lying in a pool of blood close to their burning bedroom hut.
The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene. <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/binga-man-murdered-skinned-and-homestead-burnt/">The Sunday News</a> quoted Asst Insp Mahohoma as saying:

The police found the deceased lying in a pool of blood and under him were a spear and an iron bar. The head of the deceased was skinned and it had two deep cuts on the forehead and one on the left ear.
Also beside the body of the deceased was a blood-stained axe. Our officers also observed struggle marks and five huts that had been burnt.
We appeal to members of the public to assist with information that may lead to the arrest of the five who are still at large.
Members of the public should also desist from using violence to solve differences as it costs lives.

Binga Man (65) Murdered, Skinned And Homestead Burnt

The ruling ZANU PF won the Ward 20 Binga Rural District Council by-election that was held on Saturday 03 December 2022. 
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced the elections on Sunday (today) morning stating that ZANU PF candidate, Muleya Mulando defeated Citizens Coalition for Change candidate, Munkuli Crispen. Reads the notice seen by Pindula News:

ZANU PF Wins Binga Ward 20 By-election

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has announced the suspension of by-elections for wards 6, 8, 10, 15, and 23 of Binga Rural District Council scheduled for Saturday 03 December 2022.
In a statement on Friday, 02 December, ZEC chief elections officer Utloile Silaigwana said the High Court ordered the suspension of the by-elections after the nominations of five of the candidates were challenged in court. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission would like to inform members of the public that the High Court has ordered the suspension of by-elections for wards 6, 8, 10, 15, and 23 of Binga Rural District Council scheduled for Saturday 03 December 2022.
This follows urgent chamber applications by Collen Mudenda who challenged the nominations of John Simunene Sikabotu, Kingson Mpofu, Mathias Mudenda, Joseph Mwembe, and Wilson Siampolomba on the grounds that they were disqualified from contesting as candidates in terms of Section 119(2) (h) of the Electoral Act.
The Section states that a person shall be disqualified from being nominated as a candidate on the nomination day or the day of an election when he or she is in default with the payment of any levy, rate, charge, or tax due and payable to the council concerned for more than 120 days.
The High Court ordered that the Commission should not proceed with the by-elections for the five wards pending the hearing of the cases which was postponed to 4 January 2023.
However, despite this High Court order, by-elections for ward 20 of Binga Rural District Council, wards 4, 5, and 18 of Gweru Municipality, and ward 28 of Mberengwa Rural District Council will go ahead tomorrow 3 December 2022 as scheduled.

ZEC Announces Suspension Of Some Binga RDC By-elections

The High Court has barred the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) from holding by-elections in five wards under Binga Rural District Council that were scheduled for 03 December 2022.
The by-elections have been suspended due to objections filed against the nomination of CCC candidates who are alleged to owe the local authority debts of over 120 days.
High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi on Friday, 02 December, granted an application by Collen Mudenda who was seeking the court to bar Mathias Mudenda, who was cited as the first respondent, and ZEC, which was cited as the second respondent, from going ahead with the elections. Ruled Justice Chitapi:

The elections set for 3 December 2022 for the election of Councillors for Wards 6, 8, 10, 15, and 23 of Binga Rural District Council be and are hereby suspended.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, ZEC said all other by-elections scheduled for 3 December will proceed.
The by-elections will be held in Binga Ward 20 and in Gweru in wards 4, 5, and 18.

High Court Suspends Five Local Government By-elections In Binga

Baboons are giving people in Hwange and Binga Districts a torrid time as they break into homes through windows and rooftops while searching for food.
The baboons also attack women and children and snatch their satchels.
The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) is struggling to curb the baboon menace as traditional methods to stop them are proving ineffective.
Speaking during an interview with <a href="https://vicfallslive.co.zw/index.php/2022/10/16/baboons-wreak-havoc-in-drought-prone-binga-hwange/">VicFallsLive</a>, Zimparks Matabeleland North regional manager Samson Chibaya said they have embarked on an exercise to capture the baboons but it is proving to be difficult. He said:
<blockquote>
Baboons are a perennial nuisance in Hwange urban and other areas such as Binga and Victoria Falls.
They cause damage in hotels, lodges and homes and their behaviour includes the destruction of property and taking food from kitchens, off the buffets and tables.
Capture and translocation are no longer effective because the baboons no longer come to the baits.
Shooting is also ineffective as the baboons are so elusive and flee once they see armed people in uniform.
They are (also) territorial, once a troop is wiped out another different one quickly moves in within a week or two.

Chibaya attributed the increasing cases of human-wildlife conflict in urban areas such as Hwange to poor refuse disposal and climate change. He said:
<blockquote>
Poor solid waste management is another factor as baboons are attracted to leftover food and edible waste.
Most raids in residential areas happen where houses are not manned, and sometimes in the presence of children and women.
Ecologically, most of the areas around towns have no food and fruits for baboons, hence (they) rely on waste from residential areas.
The problem worsens during the hot and dry season when food is less available.

Hwange town is surrounded by areas with a high population of wild animals such as the Hwange Colliery Concession, private farms, state land and protected areas under Zimparks and this means that animals such as baboons stray into residential areas, Chibaya added.

Baboons Wreak Havoc In Drought-prone Binga, Hwange

ZANU PF Youth League official, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/top-zanu-pf-youth-league-official-dies/">Elias Sibanda who died on Wednesday</a> has been declared a Provincial Hero. He was an administrative director within the party. Sibanda, age not given, was originally from Binga and was one of the directors in the party’s Administration. In an update seen by Pindula News, the ruling party said:

ZANU PF PATRIOTS Group Admin declared Provincial Hero Cde Elias Sibanda who died in Harare on Wednesday 12 October 2022 after a long illness is said to have been declared a Provincial Hero.
Cde Elias Sibanda a tough and straightforward Cadre, is a former Mat North Youth League Provincial Spokesperson and was currently working at the Party HQ as Deputy Director ICT. 
He was celebrated amongst the baTonga people as he was amongst the few Tonga people who had risen to a very high position in the Party. He is survived by his wife, Similo Nkomo-Sibanda and kids.

ZANU PF Youth League Official Declared Provincial Hero

A Binga man escaped death by a whisker after being attacked by a crocodile while allegedly running away from a charging elephant.
His left arm and leg were amputated following the crocodile attack. 
Winders Sianene (34) was attacked by a crocodile as he tried to run away from an elephant that was charging at him when he was on his way to Mlibizi River where he was going for a fishing expedition.
Mr Fanikiso Mkombwe, brother to Sianene confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/chased-by-elephant-caught-by-crocodile/">Sunday News</a>. Said Mr Mkombwe:

Winders was on his way to Mlibizi River when he saw an elephant charging towards him. It was then that he decided to run and jump into the river trying to evade the elephant. Unfortunately, he was attacked by a crocodile in the process. He was going to do fishing in Mlibizi River. He has since been admitted to Mpilo Hospital while his leg and arm have been amputated.

It’s not stated how he escaped from the crocodile.
Zimparks spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo also confirmed the incident and warned the public to stay away from water bodies and treat them cautiously.
Meanwhile, Victoria Falls-based poet, Obert Dube has donated a wheelchair to Sianene through his wheelchair donation programme.

Man Caught And Attacked By A Crocodile While Fleeing From An Elephant

The government has said it is aiming to complete the rehabilitation of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Binga">Binga</a> Airstrip a development that is premised on attracting more local and foreign tourists to the remote wildlife and nature-rich part of Matabeleland North Province. 
The rehabilitation was started last year by the Government as part of efforts to improve accessibility so that tourism hotspots in remote areas. 
Binga is regarded as a prime destination sitting on potentially lucrative untapped tourism opportunities and it is believed that the rehabilitation of the Airstrip will work in making it “discoverable.”
It has such attractions as the hot springs, wildlife and some economic activities including fishing, boating, crocodile farming, and cultural activities, among others. 
The rehabilitation of the airstrip is done by the District Development Fund (DDF). 
The workers told Sunday News that on a good day, the airport would see three flights in and out of Binga, with one in the morning, afternoon and late afternoon. 
In an interview, Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo said that construction work on the airstrip was ongoing. He said:

DDF is rebuilding the airstrip and you might have seen we have men that are really busy sprucing it up and adding to the work that has already been done there. There is an area that is being built around the airstrip that will become a waiting area where tourists can sit around comfortably as they wait to go and see the Zambezi and other attractions that we have in this part of the country. It is only getting better and better and as a province, we are happy that Binga is attracting more tourists.

DDF Matabeleland North Roads Manager Mr Jacob Ndlovu said that they hoped to be finished with the rehabilitation of the airstrip by the time the rainy season starts. 
Mr Rinzelani Majoko, the acting manager at Musumu River Lodge, the resort where visitors taken from the airstrip are delivered before going on a tour of the Zambezi River, said that the airstrip had eliminated the unpleasant aspects of long-distance travel. 
Majoko said that the airstrip was bringing in clients from Africa, Europe and North America, including those that had to postpone their visits to Binga at the onset of Covid-19.

Govt Aims To Complete Rehabilitation Of Binga Airstrip This Year

A local footballer was killed by his teammate following a misunderstanding over an undisclosed issue in Binga on Saturday.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Matabeleland North Province, Inspector Glory Banda, said the incident occurred in the Nalubuyu area under Chief Binga.
He said Planner Munenge (age not given) of Nalubuyu village and Simbarashe Sibanda (24) from the same area were playing social football in a tournament on Saturday.
The match ended late in the evening and their team officials resolved that all players would sleep over in camp and go home the following day.
That evening, the players decided to go for a beer drink at a nearby business centre where a misunderstanding arose between Munenge and Sibanda. Said Insp Banda:

I can confirm that we received a case of murder where a man used a brick to fatally assault another.
On 10 September 2022, there was a soccer match at Donga Shopping Centre grounds and the match ended late.
Nalubuyu team officials decided that team players would spend the night at the camp.

Insp Banda said Sibanda and Munenge had a misunderstanding and the suspect attacked the now-deceased at around 11 PM. He said:

The accused then allegedly struck the now deceased with a brick on the head. Onlookers tried to render first aid, to no avail as he died moments later.

Footballer Kills Teammate After Social Soccer Tournament

The government says it has started distributing digital set-top boxes to Binga villagers for them to start receiving digitalised broadcasting transmission.
On Friday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa handed 100 set-top boxes to government departments, the local authority, and traditional and political leaders.
Mutsvangwa said the government will prioritise areas that were historically marginalised without television services. She said:

I am happy to announce that the transmitter constructed at Nkalange here in Binga is now complete and is transmitting signal that will be picked up by the set-top boxes that we are going to distribute here today.
Already there are channels that can be scanned on these set-top boxes which include ZBC TV, ZBC News, Yadah TV, Jive TV and Christ TV.

Chief Siansali and Siachilaba are some of those that received set-top boxes.
The government launched the digitalisation programme in 2015 in an effort to effect migration from analogue to digital terrestrial transmission (DTT).
To date, only 18 out of the targeted 48 digital transmitters are now complete.
DTT uses terrestrial towers to transmit the signal much like mobile network operator base stations and signals can be picked up by special antennas and set-top boxes.

Binga Receives Digital Broadcasting Signal

An earthquake with a 4.2 magnitude on the Richter scale struck the Binga area in Matabeleland North on Wednesday morning.
Meteorological Services Department (MSD) head meteorologist James Ngoma told NewsDay that the epicentre of the earthquake was Binga. He said:

An earthquake of 4.2 a magnitude was felt in Binga around 5.15 am in the morning. There were no reports of damages to property, deaths or injuries.

Earth tremors are common in Binga and are a result of the earth’s crust’s response to the water load or weight of water in the Kariba dam.

Earth Tremor Strikes Binga

An elderly headman in Binga has been missing for a whole week after taking a three-day walk from his home in Sichutumba to Sianzyundu to visit his relatives to help resolve a social problem.
A villager told Southern Eye that Headman Dickson Siabwizu Mudenda from Binga South made the journey to Sianzyundu on foot because there is no transport in the area. Said the villager:

The old man, who is a headman, decided to walk to Sianzyundu due to transport problems.
It is reported that he arrived well at Siyanzyundu. On his way back no one knows what happened to him as he has gone missing.
It is now the seventh day since he left Sianzyundu.
Relatives, who lived with him, are now worried and wondering what could have happened to the headman.
Mudenda is shortsighted and villagers now fear that he could have taken the wrong route resulting in him getting lost.

Meanwhile, Chief Dobola on Wednesday told Southern Eye that he was informed that Headman Mudenda was found at Kariangwe but was not sure whether the report was true or not. He said:

I got a message that he has been found at Kariangwe, but I am yet to check the authenticity of the message.

Binga is considered to be among some of the country’s most underdeveloped areas with a lack of basic infrastructure such as navigable roads.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday handed over fishing rigs to 21 chiefs, 17 from Binga and four from Kariba.
Addressing thousands of people who had gathered for the event in Binga yesterday, Mnangagwa said he was committed to fulfilling all the promises he made during his election campaign rally at Siabuwa Business Centre in Binga North in the run-up to the 26 March by-elections. He said:

Mnangagwa Pampers Binga, Kariba Chiefs Ahead Of 2023 Elections

Binga North MP Prince Dubeko Sibanda (CCC), has claimed that ZANU PF has marginalised Tonga and Shangani people and other minority tribes.
Speaking during a live debate on Wednesday, Sibanda said, since the coming of black majority rule in 1980, few Tonga people have been appointed to top government positions. Said Sibanda:

If you look at government appointments, one would find that since 1980, there has never been any person from the Zambezi Valley appointed to a ministerial post.
The only time that the Tonga people were treated well was during the government of national unity when they were regarded as equal citizens with other ethnic tribes.

The current Speaker of the National Assembly, Jacob Mudenda, is one of the few top bureaucrats from the Tonga tribe.
Sibanda called for the enactment of laws that guarantee equitable distribution of resources in order to deal with the issue of discrimination against minority tribes.
He also said people in Binga find it difficult to access education for their children while health and transport infrastructure in the district was dilapidated.
Sibanda was elected Binga North MP in the 26 March by-elections with 10 130 votes while ZANU PF candidate Kudakwashe Munsaka got 7 971 votes.
The other candidates were MDC Alliance’s Peggie Mudimba (356), independent candidate Disciple Munkuli (220) and United Democratic Alliance’s Clive Muzamba (136).
