<p>Daytime temperatures are expected to drop on Thursday and Friday as cloudy, windy, and cold conditions drift into the country through the south-eastern border, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) said on Wednesday afternoon.</p>
<p>Very cold, windy, and cloudy conditions are forecasted for Masvingo, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Manicaland, Harare Metropolitan, southern areas of Mashonaland East and Matabeleland North provinces, with minimum temperatures plummeting to as low as 3 degrees celsius in places.</p>
<p>Light rain and drizzle, strong and chilling winds as well as ground frost are also expected in isolated areas mostly on Thursday, according to the Met Department. The MSD said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Advection of very cold and relatively moist into Zimbabwe from the southeast coast of Southern Africa should cause a decline in daytime temperatures in the southern and eastern parts of the country. [NB: winds from the southern regions of the Indian Ocean are relatively cooler since they emanate from areas near the south pole].</p>
<p>The peak of these winds is on Thursday evening, 20 July, thus the cloudy. windy and drizzly conditions reach their furthest north points during this period overnight and recede by Friday, evening 21 July 2023, giving rise to a warmer weekend.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Meanwhile, the Department of Civil Protection has advised the public to ensure that the elderly, persons with disabilities, young and ill are kept warm.</p>
<p>Farmers have been urged to take protective measures for both plants and livestock during the period.</p>

Met Department Forecasts Light Rain, Strong And Chilling Winds

<p>The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecasted ground frost in most parts of the country from Saturday to Tuesday next week.</p>
<p>In a weather advisory issued at 12 PM this Friday, 14 July, the Met Department identified Matabeleland South, Bulawayo, Matabeleland North, Midlands, Northern Masvingo, Harare, Manicaland, Mashonaland East, Southern Mashonaland West and Central Provinces as frost-prone areas.</p>
<p>Moderate ground frost is forecasted for Saturday, while severe ground frost is expected from Sunday to Tuesday.</p>
<p>MSD has advised the public to watch out for freezing (sub-zero) ground temperatures and very cold overnight and early morning conditions.</p>

Freezing Temperatures Forecasted From Sunday

<p>The cold spell currently prevailing across the country has pushed minimum temperatures below zero degrees Celsius in some parts of the country.</p>
<p>According to the Meteorological Department (MSD), on Wednesday, 12 July, ground frost was recorded in areas such as Henderson (-2°C), Lupane (-1°C), Mutoko (2°C) and Nyanga (2°C).</p>
<p>The Met Department said it was cloudy, drizzly, and cold in the morning in areas such as Bulawayo Metropolitan, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, Manicaland and southern parts of Midlands (Gweru to Mberengwa).</p>
<p>All other areas (Matabeleland North, northern areas of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan and all Mashonaland Province) had mostly clear skies.</p>
<p>For Thursday, 13 July, MSD has forecasted brief cloudy and cold morning conditions for the northern half of the country, while parts of Masvingo, Mash West, and Mat North will experience very cold conditions. MSD said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>[Tomorrow] it is expected that areas along the Highveld (Bulawayo Metropolitan, central areas of the Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, Manicaland, southern districts of Mashonaland East, northern areas of Masvingo and Matabeleland Provinces) will experience brief cloudy and cold morning conditions, reducing the incidents of ground frost.</p>
<p>All other places (southern parts of Masvingo, Matabeleland North, Mashonaland West and Central Provinces) should have very cold morning conditions with mostly clear skies and slight ground frost in area such as Lupane, Henderson and Nyanga.</p>
<p>By noon, the majority of the country is forecast to be mild, becoming cold towards evening.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>The Met Department has urged members of the public to keep warm and make sure vulnerable members are dressed appropriately.</p>
<p>Those who need to use a brazier/fire to keep warm have been advised to ensure the room is well-ventilated.</p>
<p>Farmers have been urged to employ frost mitigation measures for crops vulnerable to extreme cold and monitor temperature within fowl runs and adjust accordingly to reduce the impacts of cold conditions on the bird population.</p>

Very Cold Morning Conditions To Continue - Met Department

<p>The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has advised the nation to expect cold and windy conditions as a cold front sweeps across the country from this Tuesday to tomorrow.</p>
<p>In a statement issued on Monday, the Met Department said the cold spell will be accompanied by strong gusts of cold wind. It said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>The entire country should be cold and windy in the morning. Mostly cloudy and drizzly conditions are expected over the southern and eastern parts of the country (namely Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Masvingo, south of Midlands, Manicaland, south of Mashonaland East and Harare metropolitan) cool by day, becoming cold overnight.</p>
<p>Matabeleland North, north of Midlands (Kwekwe to Gokwe), Mashonaland West and Central are anticipated to be mostly sunny and mild by day becoming cold towards evening.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>The MSD also urged members of the public to stay warm and for farmers to ensure that their animals are protected from the cold. Reads the statement:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Windy and cool conditions may affect the health of vulnerable members of society and trigger respiratory-related illnesses in all persons and poultry, especially day-old chicks, are sensitive to overnight decline in temperatures. <br/>
Differences between night and daytime temperatures can affect the body’s perception of the cold…</p>
<p>Ensure vulnerable members are dressed appropriately, especially in the early hours of the morning.</p>
<p>Keep warm especially if you are in the southern parts of the country and wear a sunhat and carry an umbrella if there is a need to be outdoors if you are in the northern parts of the country.</p>
<p>Monitor temperature within fowl runs and adjust accordingly to reduce these impacts of cold conditions on the bird population.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>On Monday, 10 July, South Africa’s biggest city, Johannesburg, experienced snow and sleet for the first time in over a decade.</p>
<p>Snow was reported in a number of provinces including the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and the Gauteng region which includes Johannesburg and Soweto.</p>

Met Department Forecasts Cold, Windy Spell

<p>The weekend is expected to be windy and much cooler than, the Meteorological Department has said. In its latest weather bulletin issued on Friday, 14 April 2023, the Met Department said:</p>

<p>Sunny and warm conditions coupled with intermittent light winds prevailed across much of the country with cooler mornings, though intercepting cloudy periods were observed in Mashonaland Central into parts of Mashonaland East.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, winds are strengthening along the southeast coast of Southern Africa.</p>
<p><strong>Forecast for tomorrow, Saturday 15 April 2023</strong></p>
<p>Cloudy, windy, and cool morning conditions are expected in the southern parts of the country with light drizzle in places.</p>
<p>It should be mild for the rest of the day. All other areas are anticipated to be mostly sunny, mild at first becoming warm by the afternoon.</p>
<p><strong>Weather outlook for Sunday, 16 April 2023</strong></p>
<p>The southern areas should be cloudy and mild at first, becoming much warmer by afternoon with more sunny breaks.</p>
<p>Northern parts are anticipated to be partly cloudy for much of the day, becoming cool towards evening. A cooling breeze is expected time and again.</p>
<p>Only Matabeleland North should be mostly sunny and warm, though mild both morning and evening.</p>

Met Department Predicts A Windy And Much Cooler Weekend

<p>The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has said isolated showers, drizzle, and rain which were experienced in some parts of the country on Tuesday will continue this Wednesday.</p>
<p>In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/wet-spell-set-to-continue/"><span>The Herald</span></a>, MSD head of forecasting James Ngoma said the late rains experienced yesterday were normal and came towards the end of the rainy season.</p>
<p>He said the wet spell emanated from a cloud band that was passing across the country from Botswana, but by Thursday, “normal” conditions should prevail. Said Ngoma:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>We had a cloud band that was passing across the country from Botswana.</p>
<p>This gave us cloudy conditions over much of the country with isolated showers in a number of areas coupled with a bit of lightning and thunder, but this is very seasonal and comes towards the end of the rainy season.</p>
<p>We are expecting cooler conditions over the south and this should give us rain and a bit of drizzle over Matabeleland South and Masvingo provinces, as well as southern parts of the Midlands and Manicaland and parts of Mashonaland East as of tomorrow (today), but as we get into Thursday, we are expecting normal conditions over these areas.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>The MSD has advised members of the public to keep hydrated by drinking adequate amounts of water.</p>
<p>In a weather update, the Met Department said if there is a need to stay outdoors for a prolonged period, people should ensure to wear a sunhat or sunscreen and that the young, persons who are ill, and the elderly are adequately dressed both day and night.</p>

<p>The weather report and forecast issued by the Meteorological Services Department in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection at 4 PM on Wednesday 15 March 2023 valid until Friday 17 March 2023:</p>
<h2>PREAMBLE</h2>
<p>There were cloudy and mild conditions in Midlands, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East Matabeleland South, Masvingo and Manicaland Provinces and less windy due to the weakening of the low-pressure system (former Tropical Cyclone Freddy) with merely light rainfalls.</p>
<p>The highest amounts were only 12mm (Zaka), 11mm (Kezi) and 10mm (Buhera); other places in the mentioned provinces had light rain and drizzle, as well as isolated showers in the periphery of the cloud.</p>
<p>The north-western half of the country i.e. Matabeleland North and Mashonaland West Provinces started partly cloudy and mild, and become sunny and hot by noon.</p>
<h2>FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, THURSDAY 16 MARCH 2023,</h2>
<p>Mostly cloudy and warm conditions are expected in Harare Metropolitan, northern parts of Manicaland and all Mashonaland Provinces with afternoon isolated thunderstorms due to the fringes of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).</p>

<p>The weather report and forecast issued by the Meteorological Services Department in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection at 4 PM on Tuesday 14 March 2023 valid until Thursday 16 March 2023:</p>
<h2>PREAMBLE</h2>
<p>Localized heavy falls occurred in Chisengu (78mm) due to the rain bands from the former tropical storm Freddy.</p>
<p>Other areas in Manicaland and Masvingo Provinces received amounts between 5mm and 10mm with the exception of Mukandi, Chisumbanje and Chipinge with 29mm, 23mm and 21mm respectively.</p>
<p>All Mashonaland provinces had light of showers, while Matabeleland South Province and southern areas of Midlands had light rain and drizzle with cloudy, mild and windy conditions prevailing.</p>
<p>Matabeleland North and northern areas of Midlands had clear skies at first but became cloudy towards evening as the cloud bands from Freddy dispersed from its centre, currently over Malawi.</p>

MSD Weather Report & Forecast: 14 To 16 March 2023

<p>Parts of Nyanga District in Manicaland Province received more than 102mm of rainfall over the weekend due to moisture that stemmed from Tropical Cyclone Freddy.</p>
<p>According to the Meteorological Services Department (MSD), Nyanga received 102mm, Mukandi 97mm, and Chisengu 83mm. It said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>The extreme eastern parts of the country received very high precipitation amounts in areas such as Nyanga (102mm), Mukandi (97mm) and Chisengu (83mm).</p>
<p>This comprised thunderstorms and rain due to moisture stemming from the now decaying former Tropical Cyclone Freddy and relief rainfall caused by the mountainous area.</p>
<p>The northern provinces, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central had isolated thundershowers; while Matabeleland South and Masvingo provinces were cloudy and cool with rain and drizzle in places.</p>
<p>The only warm and dry areas were the northern parts of Midlands or Matabeleland North.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>The MSD has forecasted isolated showers in Mashonaland East and Central as well as Harare Metropolitan provinces. It said in a statement:</p>

<p>The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) has warned the public to be wary of possible lightning strikes and to avoid parking vehicles under trees.</p>
<p>The MSD said on 15 March, Masvingo, Manicaland, Harare Metropolitan and all Mashonaland Provinces should be mostly cloudy and mild with morning light rain in places.</p>

Cyclone Freddy Drenches Nyanga

<p>The current dry and sunny weather conditions currently prevailing in most parts of the country are a result of Severe Tropical Storm Freddy which is in the Mozambique channel but moving towards the northern coast of Mozambique, the Met Department has said.</p>
<p>In a weather update issued in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection on Thursday afternoon, MSD said much of the country was dry, with the only light shower being over Kariba. It said:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>The proximity of Severe Tropical Storm Freddy, currently approaching the northern coast of Mozambique, led to a cirrus cloud over much of the north-eastern parts of the country (parts of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, northern district of Manicaland and all Mashonaland Provinces); with a halo being noted in some places.</p>
<p>Cool morning conditions prevailed in these parts as the same system dried up much of the atmosphere with the only light shower being over Kariba.</p>
<p>It was sunny and mild in other parts of the country (Masvingo, Bulawayo Metropolitan, and Matabeleland North and South) and became warm by afternoon.</p>

<p>The MSD has forecasted mostly sunny and mild weather conditions, with a chance of afternoon thundershowers over parts Masvingo, Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Central provinces on Friday, 10 March.</p>
<p>Sunny and hot conditions are anticipated over the remaining provinces.</p>
<p>Members of the public have been urged to take measures to protect themselves against high daytime temperatures.</p>
<p>On 11 March, windy and cloudy conditions with light intermittent showers are expected in Manicaland Province. Said MSD:</p>

Cyclone Freddy Dries Zimbabwe

<p>The weather report and forecast issued by the Meteorological Services Department in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection at 4 PM on Tuesday 07 March 2023 valid until Thursday 09 March 2023:</p>
<h2>PREAMBLE</h2>
<p>The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is moving further northwards into Zambia. It left isolated light showers in the northern parts of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, northern parts of Manicaland, Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland East Provinces, yesterday. These showers were coupled with lightning in some places.</p>
<p>Today’s morning hours were cloudy and mild in the southern districts of the Midlands, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Matabeleland South, Masvingo and Manicaland Provinces but became less cloudy by evening.</p>
<p>This was due to the continued drying effect caused by Tropical Storm Freddy (currently more than a thousand kilometres away, near the southwest coast of Madagascar) as it draws moisture away from Southern Africa.</p>

<p>Hot and humid conditions with brief cloudy periods and a slight chance of isolated afternoon thunderstorms are anticipated in areas along the Zambezi Valley.</p>

<p>This saw Mutema (Chipinge) station recording the highest amount of Rainfall of (43mm) followed by Chisengu with (29mm), as well as in the western areas of Matabeleland North where isolated thunderstorms were experienced due to a trough that is touching areas around the Capirivi strip.</p>

<p>Cloudy conditions persisted in the Eastern and Southern Provinces (Mashonaland East, Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland South and Manicaland) under the circulation of the remnants of Tropical Storm Freddy. </p>
<p>This resulted in rain near its centre (over provinces such as Masvingo, Matabeleland South and southern parts of the Midlands), thunderstorms in its close periphery (in all Mashonaland Provinces) and showers in the outer edges of the circulation (areas such as northern areas of the Midlands and Matabeleland North). </p>
<p>Significant precipitation in all three forms; rain in Buffalo Range (61mm) and Beitbridge (35mm), thunderstorms in Mount Darwin (33mm) as well as showers in Mhondoro (25mm).</p>

<p>The weather report and forecast issued by the Meteorological Services Department in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection at 4 PM on Thursday 23 February 2023 valid until Saturday 25 February 2023:</p>
<h2>PREAMBLE</h2>
<p>Moderate Tropical Storm Freddy is now in the Mozambique channel headed West-South-West, slowly towards the south-eastern parts of Mozambique.</p>
<p>In this position, it was inducing cool winds into the south-eastern parts of the country, today. These winds have begun to strengthen as the Tropical Storm draws closer to the coast of Mozambique.</p>
<p>Landfall is expected overnight [03:00 am Friday, 24 February 2023] in the southern parts of Mozambique, with its cloud bands spreading to cover a radius of 500km beyond the eye of the storm (i.e. reaching the Eastern Highlands while still in the Mozambique Channel).</p>
<h2>FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, FRIDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2023,</h2>
<p>Strong winds due to Severe Tropical Storm Freddy and early morning rain (03:00 am) are anticipated in Chipinge and Chimanimani, and spreading to Chiredzi, Bikita, Mwenezi as well as Beitbridge.</p>
<p>It should get progressively more cloudy from east to west in these areas as the day progresses, with heavy downpours towards evening.</p>
<p>In Harare Metropolitan, and northern parts of Manicaland and all Mashonaland Provinces mostly cloudy conditions are expected with isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms and a light breeze time and again. Slight gusts are probable.</p>

<p>It should be cloudy with occasional sunny breaks followed by afternoon and or evening showers which may be thundery in places over (Matabeleland South, Masvingo and southern parts of Manicaland provinces.</p>

Moderate Tropical Storm Freddy To Make Landfall In Mozambique At 3 AM, Friday

<p>The weather report and forecast issued by the Meteorological Services Department in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection at 4 PM on Friday 17 February 2023 valid until Sunday 19 February 2023:</p>
<h2>PREAMBLE</h2>
<p>Thunderstorms were experienced throughout the country due to the present low-pressure system.</p>
<p>Heavier falls were witnessed in Matabeleland North Province which is where the nucleus of the system was.</p>
<p>Notable recorded rainfall amounts were at the following places; Victoria Falls (65mm), Lupane (58mm), Hwange (50mm), Binga (50mm) and Chisengu (43mm). </p>
<p>Meanwhile, the low-pressure system continues to affect the country though with less vivacity and is drifting eastwards.</p>

MSD WEATHER FORECAST: Afternoon Thunderstorms And Thundershowers Likely

<p>The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecasted heavy rains and flash floods in the Southern and Eastern parts of the country from 09 to 15 February 2023.</p>
<p>In a recent advisory, the MSD said the rains are due to moisture drifting into the country from Mozambique. It said:</p>

<p>Moisture is drifting into the country from Mozambique through Mashonaland East and Manicaland Provinces, this has been coupled by a cloud band moving from Botswana into Matabeleland South.</p>
<p>These two systems should lead to considerable rainfall in Matabeleland South, southern parts of Midlands, Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Harare Metropolitan Provinces, as well as other areas along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>The Met Department also warned that localised heavy downpours accompanied by lightning and hailstorms are probable. MSD said:</p>

<p>Localised heavy rains in excess of 50 millimeters with lightning and hailstorms will in some places result in rooftops being blown off causing loose debris while trees may fall due to strong winds.</p>
<p>Open drains and potholes that may be covered in water are some of the things to watch out for.</p>

<p>The MSD advised members of the public to stay indoors during thunderstorms unless it’s an emergency, and to avoid crossing flooded rivers on foot or in vehicles as this may lead to loss of life.</p>


Met Department Warns Of Heavy Rains, Strong Winds

<p>The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) says the country is safe for now from tropical storms Dingani and Freddy which are currently thousands of kilometres away from the continent.</p>
<p>The two tropical storms are evolving and intensifying about 4 600km away in the Indian Ocean.</p>
<p>MSD agro-meteorologist and long-range forecaster Benjamin Kwenda on Friday told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimbabwe-is-safe-from-tropical-storms-dingani-freddy/"><strong>The Herald</strong></a> that the two tropical storms currently pose no direct threat to Zimbabwe. He said:</p>

<p>Zimbabwe is still safe for now. The cyclones are still very, very far away. There is no need to mention them as yet.</p>
<p>We are monitoring developments in the Indian Ocean basin to see if there is anything that could possibly affect us.</p>
<p>Presently, there is nothing that could be a cause for concern.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Cyclone Dingani was formed on 28 January and was moving towards Mauritius and Reunion, some islands on the Indian Ocean.</p>
<p>As of 10 February, the tropical storm, with a maximum speed of 110km/h was located 2106 km east-southeast of Diego Garcia, which is more than 4626km away from Zimbabwe.</p>
<p>Cyclone Dingani was travelling at a speed of 85 km/ hr and was expected to change its speed to 100 km by 11 February, according to experts.</p>
<p>Tropical Cyclone Freddy was formed on 03 February near the north-western coast of Australia and was heading towards African Islands, and moving at a wind speed of 95km/hr.</p>

<p>Localized downpours occurred in places such as Wedza (55mm), Mutare (52mm), Kariba (46mm), and Chibero (30mm).  The southern provinces had cloudy conditions with a slight drizzle.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, moisture is developing near the eastern parts of the sub-continent (near the Mozambique Channel).</p>
