A cholera outbreak has hit Buhera, Manicaland Province, while in Harare, one cholera case has been confirmed in Hopley Zone 5.
Speaking on Tuesday, during a post-Cabinet media briefing, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere said that the Government has taken measures to contain the outbreak in Buhera. He said:

The Minister of Health also presented a report on preventive measures with respect to reported cases of cholera in Buhera.
Cabinet would like to inform the nation that the government has instituted a number of measures to contain the reported Buhera incidents such as mobilising equipment for borehole drilling, advocacy and activation of the district Department of Civil Protection.
The nation will be kept abreast of developments on the matter.

Meanwhile, City of Harare Epidemiologist Dr Michael Vere revealed that one confirmed cholera case has been recorded in Hopley Zone 5.
Dr Vere said the city’s health department is now carrying out investigations on the cause of the case.
He urged residents to continue taking preventive measures to avoid contracting the disease.
Dr Vere reiterated that prevention remains better than cure and implored residents to drink treated water regardless of source and wash their hands under running water. He said:

Zimbabwe has recorded a cumulative 3 017 suspected cases of cholera, with Manicaland having recorded the highest number at 1 251, followed by Harare with 1 121.

Zimbabwe Records 3 017 Suspected Cholera Cases, 52 deaths

Forty (40) people developed cholera symptoms a few days after attending a wedding at a resort on 10 June 2023, the Harare City Council has said.
Five cases had been confirmed to have been cholera cases by Friday, 16 June 2023.
In a statement, the local authority said the guests were from Malborough, Budiriro, and Glen Norah suburbs, among other areas, while others were from outside Harare. Reads the statement:

There was a wedding on the 10th of June at a resort in Harare. Around 350 guests attended. At least 40 of them developed cholera symptoms some few days after the wedding and as of 16 June, 5 had been confirmed to have Cholera.

Schools Open Amid Rising Cholera Cases

Harare City Council says it is deploying most of its refuse compactors and other resources to Budiriro following a cholera outbreak in the suburb.
This comes after 11 suspected and three confirmed cholera cases, were recorded in Budiriro 1 where residents get water from an unprotected water source.
The outbreak has raised fears of a repeat of the 2008 and 2018 Cholera outbreaks that killed and infected several thousands of people.
In a public Notice on Friday, Harare City Council said the redeployment of equipment to Budiriro 1 to combat the cholera outbreak will negatively affect refuse collection in other suburbs. It said:

Following the Cholera outbreak in Budiriro 1, the City has redeployed a quarter of its Refuse Compactors, Front End Loaders and Tipper Trucks to complement the other sanitation improvement measures being employed to contain the spread of Cholera to other areas in the City.
This will resultantly temporarily further prolong the refuse collection cycle in a number of areas.
The City will revert back to a once in two weeks collection after a week or two.

Budiriro has been Zimbabwe’s leading Cholera Hotspot since the worst outbreak of 2008-2009 when more than 4 000 people succumbed to the disease.

Council Redoubles Efforts To Control Budiriro Cholera Outbreak

The Harare City Health Department has activated emergency Cholera response systems after three confirmed, and 11 suspected cholera cases were recorded in Budiriro 1 over the past five days.
According to <a href="https://healthtimes.co.zw/2023/04/27/11-budiriro-residents-contract-cholera-after-drinking-water-from-contaminated-well/">Health Times</a>, the 11 suspected cases and the confirmed three, all emanate from one area in Budiriro 1 where residents get water from an unprotected water source.
Speaking during a recent Media Science Café organized by the Health Communicators Forum in Zimbabwe (HCF), City of Harare Epidemiologist, Dr Michael Vere said they have identified and closed the well which is the source of the infections. He said:

We have got 11 suspected Cholera cases but amongst these cases, three have been confirmed already.
The first case was recorded on the 22nd of April and this was a 15-year-old Child who stays in Budiriro 1 and has got no history of travel to any of the areas affected so far by Cholera in Zimbabwe or in the region.
We are investigating local sources of this infection and so far, what has been done is that we have taken water samples from the water sources of these 11 cases and there is a common source which is a Well at one of the households of these cases.
This is a Well that we are suspecting and we have also closed the Well and we have also collected samples from surrounding boreholes and some well close to that area and we are awaiting results.

Speaking at the same event, however, Harare Residents Trust (HRT) Director, Precious Shumba criticised Harare City Council for failing to provide adequate water supply for residents. He said:

Cholera occurs sporadically when water supply, sanitation, food safety, and hygiene are inadequate (City of Harare, 2009). Vending sites have no water and sanitation facilities.
There are no toilets or sources of water to service the majority of vendors in the communities.
Water is in short supply across the suburbs with residents largely dependent on community boreholes and shallow wells, especially in Mabvuku, Tafara, Glen Norah, Chitungwiza, Epworth, Budiriro, and Glen View.
Reports of sewerage bursts are not being urgently attended to when they are made to council offices dotted across the suburbs.
There is very poor responsiveness of the council in tackling this health challenge.

11 Budiriro Residents Contract Cholera From Contaminated Well

China has donated 500 boreholes to improve access to safe and clean water in remote areas of <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Manicaland_Province">Manicaland</a>, Matabeleland South, and Masvingo. The Asian giant also pledged to drill an additional 300 boreholes.
This donation is expected to help reduce deaths from preventable diarrheal diseases and to increase horticultural productivity, increase school and work attendance, improve learning outcomes, accelerate rural development and reduce health costs.
The boreholes were handed over to the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Rural Development, Dr <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/Anxious_Masuka">Anxious Masuka</a>, at Clare Secondary School in Odzi.
The Charge de Affaires China Embassy, Mr Cheng Yen, reported that 200 boreholes were drilled in Manicaland, while Masvingo and Matabeleland South received 150 boreholes each. <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/new-china-donates-500-boreholes-to-zim/">Manica Post</a> quotes him as saying:

China has led prominent projects in Zimbabwe, including the New Parliament Building, National Pharmaceutical Warehouse, and expansions of Kariba South Hydro and Hwange Thermal Power Stations.
Minister Masuka described China’s donation of 500 boreholes as a milestone in providing universal access to clean and safe water.
The donation comes as Zimbabwe is <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/?s=cholera">battling cholera</a> with at least 17 hotspots identified countrywide.

China Donates 500 Boreholes To Zimbabwe

Health authorities in Zimbabwe have identified two cholera cases in Chegutu, Mashonaland West Province, with one having been confirmed and another still under investigation.
In a statement seen by <a href="https://healthtimes.co.zw/2023/02/19/breaking-zim-records-cholera-cases/">Health Times</a>, the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) said the confirmed case has since recovered. It said:

On the 15th of February 2023, Zimbabwe confirmed a case of cholera in Chegutu town, Mashonaland West Province, having presented with watery diarrhoea and vomiting on the 12th of February 2023.
On the 17th of February 2023, a second case was reported, again in Chegutu town and investigations are underway. The first confirmed case has since recovered.

MoHCC said South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi have already recorded confirmed cases of Cholera. Reads the statement:

The Ministry of Health and Child Care is alerting the public of the current cholera outbreaks within the SADC region affecting some of our neighbouring countries (Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia).
</blockquote>
To date, over 43 000 cases and 1400 deaths have been reported in the region since January 2023.
<blockquote>
Due to the high human traffic across our borders, there is a high risk of importation of cases into the country, especially considering that Zimbabwe is a transit route for most SADC countries.
The public is therefore advised to be on the alert for symptoms of watery diarrhoea amongst travellers from Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia and alert their nearest health facilities for treatment.
For the prevention of cholera, people are advised to: Make sure they drink and use safe water and boil it at all times.
Practice hygiene at all times including washing hands before eating, and after visiting the toilet and desisting from eating unhygienically prepared food.
Use proper latrines or other sanitation systems, Cook food well, keep it covered and eat it hot.

The Ministry urged people who suspect they have contracted cholera to visit the nearest health facility for prompt treatment. It said:

If anyone presents with watery diarrhoea immediately report to the nearest health facility or call the Ministry’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre toll-free number 2019 for assistance.

Zimbabwe Records Cholera Cases

A senior official in the Ministry of Health and Child Care says they are on high alert following cases of cholera in Malawi and other countries in the southern African region.
Speaking with <a href="https://healthtimes.co.zw/2023/02/17/no-cases-of-cholera-in-zim-health-ministry/">Health Times</a> on Friday, Health and Child Care Deputy Minister John Mangwiro urged Zimbabweans to continue safe hygiene and sanitation practices. He said:

In Zimbabwe there are no cases of cholera but we know Malawi has got cases. We are on the lookout for cholera and all the preventative measures have been taken.
We are rushing to the Director of Public Health Dr (Munyaradzi) Dobbie. He was telling us he is on a cleanup mission for the towns.
</blockquote>
In 2008, Zimbabwe was hit by a severe cholera outbreak that mainly affected Glen View and Budiriro high density suburbs in the capital Harare.
Malawi is currently the hardest hit with close to 1 300 deaths.
Other regional countries such as Zambia, and South Africa have reportedly been recording some cholera cases.

"No Cases Of Cholera Recorded In Zimbabwe"

Shamva mining area recently recorded two cholera cases. The two patients were however treated and discharged.
The first cholera case was recorded at Mhondoro mining area and the second one was on Thursday last week.
The two cases were confirmed by Shamva district medical officer, Tendayi Kamuriwo.
Kamuriwo said that the government was on top of the situation.
<blockquote>Indeed, we received two patients who tested positive for cholera, but they have since been discharged and we do not have any admissions. The two have since recovered. We are very much alert.</blockquote>

2 Cholera Cases Recorded In Shamva

Harare city council’s refuse collection trucks have been grounded owing to fuel shortages. The development raises fears of another cholera and typhoid outbreak in the populous capital.
Council spokesperson Michael Chideme said that the council is now using less than 16 refuse trucks to service 45 wards. Chideme had this to say:
<blockquote>Due to the prevailing fuel shortages on the market, we are unable to do our scheduled garbage collections. Today, 16 garbage trucks were deployed. They have since exhausted their daily allocations.
Efforts are being made to secure fuel. Once we are able to access fuel, we will deploy the vehicles to their daily duties. We regret any inconveniences that may arise as a result of non-collection.</blockquote>
In 2018, a cholera outbreak hit the capital and later spread throughout the country. The outbreak’s epicentre was traced to a contaminated borehole in the high-density suburb of Glen View. At least 55 lives were lost because of the outbreak.

Harare City Council Grounds Refuse Collection Trucks Due To Fuel Shortages

Police are maintaining a heavy presence in most of the country’s cities as authorities fear the worst amid a clampdown on desperate vendors who are now fighting back.
In Harare, law enforcers have peppered the central business district with riot police officers, armed with batons while water cannon vehicles routinely comb the streets.
At night, the vendors who are now piling up stones to fight back if and when cornered, which is quite often, descend on the empty streets to conduct their business.
The leader of the Zimbabwe Informal Sector Organisation Makomborero Haruzivishe said they were mulling calling for a day of action to protest both the police clampdown and confiscation of wares.
Said Haruzivishe:
<blockquote>We have lost so much including our stalls worth $32 000, people have been assaulted especially during night raids, we have accounted at least 73 people who have been assaulted, those who are going to hospital are being asked to bring police reports which is not possible.As a way forward, we want a day of action so that we take the authorities to account. How can Zimbabwe be open for business when they are not allowing people to do business? If it was cholera alone, why take people’s clothes? Next week we are calling for a day of action where we are going to say enough is enough.</blockquote>

Vendors Fight Back

Harare City Council (HCC) town clerk Hosea Chisango has said that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) will remain on the streets of the capital until the relocation of vendors is complete. Vendors have been resisting the council’s efforts to relocate them away from the central business district to designated vending sites. The vendors have been banned from selling food items since the outbreak of the cholera outbreak which has killed at least 45 people so far.
Said Chisango,
<blockquote>We have commitment from the Zimbabwe Republic Police that they are going to assist our municipal police until the situation reaches a sustainable level. The relocation may take some time but we anticipate that the situation will settle down.</blockquote>

Police To Stay On The Streets Until Vendor Relocation Is Complete - Town Clerk

Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries founder Walter Magaya on Sunday donated goods reported to be worth $1 million to help in the fight against Cholera. At least 33 people have succumbed to the disease which has mainly affected Harare’s high-density suburbs of Budiriro and Glen View. The government has declared the cholera outbreak a state of emergency.  During the handover ceremony, Magaya said,
<blockquote>As a church, we also raised funds through our branches in Botswana, Swaziland, China, Australia, United Kingdom, Zambia and South Africa just to name a few. I also sold two of my cars in South Africa so that I could put the money towards the cholera response.
Two other haulage trucks are on the way from South Africa bringing more sanitisers, latex gloves, toilet cleaners and water purification tablets. We had to buy in South Africa because we could not get adequate supplies here in Zimbabwe as our order was quite big. As I speak, I am left with nothing but as a church, we shall help the government to fight cholera until there are no more reported cases.</blockquote>

Magaya, PHD Ministries Donate Goods Worth $1 Million To Fight Cholera

Steward Bank has launched its own crowdfunding campaign, named Kanzatu-Nzatu, to raise money to fight cholera and typhoid. The bank promised to match dollar for dollar all the money raised through the campaign from individual contributions. The bank is seeking to raise USD 2,000,000 to fight cholera and typhoid which have killed over 40 people in Harare and Midlands. More than 7000 cases of cholera have been reported so far. At the time of publishing, the fund had received more than 430 donations amounting to $6423 in less than 24 hours since the fund was launched.

Steward Bank Starts Own Cholera Crowd Funding Campaign, Promises To Match Funds Donated

There were running battles between vendors and the police over the weekend as Harare City Council intensified its crackdown on illegal vendors over the weekend.
On Saturday policed chased vendors from their selling points at Fourth Street bus termini and Coppa Cabbana confiscating vendors’ wares in the process.
Michael Chideme  HCC corporate communications manager said that chasing away the vendors from the CBD was a way of fighting the Cholera epidemic which has killed more than 25 people to date.
Said Chideme:
<blockquote>We have cholera and this is part of the fight against the epidemic, we are taking the vendors to their designated sites</blockquote>
In response to the police crackdown, National Vendors Union of Zimbabwe (Navuz) Chairperson Sten Zvorwadza said removing vendors from the streets through confrontation will not work and government should pursue persuasive and participatory strategies to remove them.
Said Zvorwadza:
<blockquote>The process of removing informal workers from the streets should be through dialogue and they should voluntarily leave the streets rather than through confrontation.
Confrontation has not worked in the past, it has failed so many times and it will still fail again</blockquote>

<h2>What is cholera disease?</h2>
• Cholera disease causes a lot of watery diarrhoea and vomiting. 
• Cholera diarrhoea can look like cloudy rice water. 
• Cholera can cause death from dehydration (the loss of water and salts from the body) within hours if not treated.
<h2>How is cholera spread?</h2>
• Cholera germs are found in the faeces (poop) of infected people. 
• Cholera is spread when faeces (poop) from an infected person 
gets into the water people drink or the food people eat. 
• Cholera is not likely to spread directly from one person
<h2>Protect yourself and your family from cholera and other diarrheal diseases:</h2>
<h3>1. Drink and use safe water*</h3>
<ul>
<li>Bottled water with unbroken seals and canned/bottled carbonated beverages are safe to drink and use.</li>
<li>Use safe water to brush your teeth, wash and prepare food, and to make ice.</li>
<li>Clean food preparation areas and kitchenware with soap and safe water and let dry completely before reuse.</li>
</ul>
To be sure water is safe to drink and use:
<ul>
<li>Boil it or treat it with a chlorine product or household bleach.</li>
<li>If boiling, bring your water to a complete boil for at least 1 minute.</li>
<li>To treat your water with chlorine, use one of the locally available treatment products and follow the instructions.</li>
<li>If a chlorine treatment product is not available, you can treat your water with household bleach. Add 8 drops of household bleach for every 1 gallon of water (or 2 drops of household bleach for every 1 litre of water) and wait 30 minutes before drinking.</li>
<li>Always store your treated water in a clean, covered container.</li>
</ul>
*Piped water sources, drinks sold in cups or bags, or ice may not be safe and should be boiled or treated with chlorine to another.
<h3>2. Wash your hands often with soap and safe water*</h3>
<ul>
<li>Before you eat or prepare food</li>
<li>Before feeding your children</li>
<li>After using the latrine or toilet</li>
<li>After cleaning your child’s bottom</li>
<li>After taking care of someone ill with diarrhoea</li>
</ul>
* If no soap is available, scrub hands often with ash or sand and rinse with safe water.
<h3>3. Use latrines or bury your faeces (poop); do not defecate in any body of water</h3>
<ul>
<li>Use latrines or other sanitation systems, like chemical toilets, to dispose of faeces.</li>
<li>Wash hands with soap and safe water after defecating.</li>
<li>Clean latrines and surfaces contaminated with faeces using a solution of 1 part household bleach to 9 parts water.</li>
</ul>
<h3>4. Cook food well (especially seafood), keep it covered, eat it hot, and peel fruits and vegetables*</h3>
<ul>
<li>Boil it, Cook it, Peel it, or Leave it.</li>
<li>Be sure to cook shellfish (like crabs and crayfish) until they are very hot all the way through.</li>
<li>*Avoid raw foods other than fruits and vegetables you have peeled yourself.</li>
</ul>
<h3>5. Clean up safely—in the kitchen and in places where the family bathes and washes clothes</h3>
Wash yourself, your children, diapers, and clothes, 30 meters (98 feet) away from drinking water sources.
 
<h2>What to do if you or your family are ill with diarrhoea:</h2>
<ul>
<li>If you have oral rehydration solution (ORS), start taking it now; it can save your life.</li>
<li>Go immediately to the nearest health facility.</li>
<li>Continue to drink ORS at home and while you travel to get treatment.</li>
<li>Continue to breastfeed your baby if they have watery diarrhoea, even when travelling to get treatment</li>

21 Dead, 3047 Cases Reported: Cholera Prevention and Control Tips

16 APRIL 2018
The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association wishes to advise members of the press stakeholders and its members on the suspected cholera cases that were recorded in the peri-Harare areas since last week.
Basic information (What is it, and who is at risk?) Cholera is a bacterial infection of the small intestines that is spread by unsafe water and contaminated food. It affects ALL age groups and is deadly if untreated. The commonest symptoms are watery diarrhoea (described as ‘rice water’) and dehydration. Symptoms usually begin a day or two after exposure to the bacteria but may develop even after five days. Other people may experience vomiting and abdominal cramps. Prevention (How does one prevent cholera?) Cholera can be prevented by practising basic sanitation. People are urged to use water from clean sources, and boil water from unsafe sources before use. Refuse should be disposed of well, in a designated area be it a pit or bin. The public is also encouraged to wash their hands with running water after using the toilet and to cover their food at all times. People should also use proper toilets and not the bush.
Treatment (What to do when you suspect that you have cholera) The dehydration from cholera can result in death within a few hours. If you suspect you have cholera, keep on oral fluids (sugar and salt solution: half level teaspoon of salt and 6 level teaspoons of sugar. in 1 litre of clean water) and report to your nearest health 5,55 immediately. Other members of that household should also be notified and be aware that they are at risk.
We hope these isolated cases of cholera will be contained to prevent an outbreak. We implore members of the public to work together and play their part in preventing cholera.</blockquote>

Doctors Association Warns of Cholera Cases

Four people have died so far from a cholera outbreak which has affected the town of Chegutu. Three other people have been admitted at the hospital. Three of the deceased are believed to have contracted the disease after they attended the funeral of the other victim, an elderly woman.
Mashonaland West Provincial Medical Director Dr Wenceslaus Nyamayaro told state media:
<blockquote>Yes, there is an outbreak in Chegutu and we are doing everything to ensure that the situation is dealt with once and for all.</blockquote>
Cholera is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae. The cholera outbreak has been blamed on poor hygiene caused by inadequate water supplies.

Minister of Health and Child Care <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/David_Parirenyatwa" target="_blank">David Parirenyatwa</a> has appealed for financial assistance to fight Typhoid and to prevent a cholera outbreak.  Typhoid has already killed 9 people, with 76 percent of the reported cases in Harare alone.
Speaking to journalists Parirenyatwa said:

Minister Parirenyatwa appeals to Magaya, Prophets, Corporates for funds to fight Typhoid and prevent Cholera outbreak

Four cases of cholera have been confirmed in Mwenezi District, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Masvingo">Masvingo Province</a>, with Government calling for improved hygienic practices and sanitary services across the country as the rains begin. Sources interviewes by The Herald said, the four people are part of 300 other worshippers of an apostolic sect popularly known as Jekenisheni who were gathering near Rutenga. The affected were, however, attended to and discharged from the clinic.
The latest confirmed cases brings the total number of cholera cases recorded in the district to eight since the beginning of the year. Health and Child Care Minister Dr <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/David_Parirenyatwa">David Parirenyatwa</a> said the outbreak was now under control after teams were dispatched to the district. He also urged Zimbabweans to practice strict hygienic standards especially now that the rainy season has started.
