The Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection, has issued the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwe evening weather report</a> and forecast for Wednesday 21 June 2023, valid until Friday 23 June 2023.
MSD reported that a change in the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">wind regime</a> overnight resulted in <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">moderate ground frost</a> in Matopos, Lupane, Rusape, and Henderson, and drizzle in Chisumbanje. By evening, the south-easterly winds began to die down.
On Thursday 22 June 2023, very cold morning conditions are anticipated over the Highveld, with moderate ground frost in Matopos, Lupane, Nkayi, Gweru, Henderson, Rusape, Marondera, Nyanga, Mukandi, and Mount Darwin. All other areas will be cold at first, becoming warm by afternoon with clear skies and a cooling breeze towards evening.
The weather outlook for Friday 23 June 2023 predicts cloudy, windy, and cold conditions in certain provinces, including Masvingo, Matabeleland South, and southern areas of the Midlands. Zimbabwe Weather Report And Forecast 26 - 28 April 2023

A man believed to be 23 years old from Mawane village in the Garanyemba area of Gwanda ran amok and destroyed property belonging to his neighbour.
The suspect, Jasper Sibanda, accused his elderly neighbour identified as Gogo MaNdlovu of spreading lies about him. He destroyed her three houses.
Ward 13 Mawane councillor Mitlas Ndlovu confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010063/gwanda-youth-runs-amok">Southern Eye</a> saying Sibanda is currently on the run. Said Ndlovu:

The incident happened last week on Friday around 11 pm, he wanted to kill Gogo MaNdlovu’s two nieces accusing them of gossiping about him.
When they (nieces) heard him threatening to kill them they ran away from home together with their granny and hid in the bush.
That is when Sibanda started destroying the homestead until 4 AM.
There is a big challenge here in Garanyemba of youths engaging in a lot of drug abuse. We need a police station here to curb all these activities.
Another elderly woman from Mawane 2 was also raped last week by another youth. I do not know why these youths are targeting old women.

According to the Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA), Zimbabwe’s illicit substance use problem increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Commonly used substances in Zimbabwe include glue, bronclee, mangemba, cane sprit, marijuana, codeine and methamphetamine (crystal meth).
Very high unemployment rates in Zimbabwe, coupled with poverty and despair, have resulted in increasing numbers of youthful citizens also turning to use drugs as a way of entertainment.

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department (MSD)</a> of Zimbabwe has forecasted isolated thundershowers in the northern parts of the country in its weather forecast and report. In a weather update seen by Pindula News, MSD said the isolated thundershowers are expected in Matabeleland North, Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, Mashonaland West and Central. Reads the report:

The overnight clearance of clouds over the southern half of the country, namely Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, southern areas of Midlands, Masvingo and Manicaland led to cool morning conditions with most areas below 15°C. The rest of the day was mostly sunny and warm over these areas However, moisture still present over Matabeleland North, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central led to partly cloudy and mild morning conditions. This moisture is slowly spreading further into the country, while cool south-easterly winds are slowly strengthening and flowing from the southeast coast of Southern Africa.
FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, THURSDAY 30 MARCH 2023, 
Matabeleland North, all Mashonaland Provinces, Harare Metropolitan, Midlands and Bulawayo Metropolitan Provinces as well as the northern parts of Matabeleland South (Bulilima, Mangwe and Matobo Districts) are to expect brief cloudy periods and isolated thundershowers. It should be warm by day but mild both morning and evening. Masvingo and the southern parts of both Matabeleland South and Manicaland Provinces should be mostly sunny and warm during the day becoming windy and mild toward evening.

Mostly cloudy and mild conditions are expected in Matabeleland North, Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, Mashonaland West and Central, with isolated showers which may be thundery in the periphery of the cloud. The cloud band to the west of the country as well as moisture from the north resulted in isolated thunderstorms over the northwestern and eastern parts of the country. The highest rainfall was at; Tsholotsho (40mm), Marondera (21mm), Nkayi (17mm) and Victoria Falls (13mm). Meanwhile, the cloud band remains stationary in the west of the country and is not expected to cause significant changes during the forecast period.

 Isolated thunderstorms are expected in the western parts of the country, that is in Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South provinces. The remainder of the country (All Mashonaland Provinces, Harare Metropolitan, Midlands, Manicaland, Masvingo and Bulawayo metropolitan provinces) will be mostly sunny with slight chances of afternoon thundershowers in some places.

Freddy’s outer-spiral cloud bands (stretching over more than a 750 km radius) resulted in cloudy, windy and mild conditions over the southern and eastern parts of the country (Matabeleland South, Masvingo, south-western parts of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, Manicaland and all Mashonaland Provinces), with light drizzle in Masvingo, Manicaland and southern parts of Mashonaland East. Other parts of the country had mostly sunny but also became windy towards evening.

Out of these, the highest was only 21mm at Mount Darwin followed by Chinhoyi at 14mm. The rest of the country was mostly sunny due to the influence of Tropical Storm Freddy (currently strengthening near the west coast of Madagascar, more than 1’000 km away), which continues to dry out much of the atmosphere. Meanwhile, moist winds from the southeast coast of Southern Africa have begun encroaching into the southern districts of Masvingo Province.

Zimbabwe Weather Report, Forecast: 4 - 6 March 2023

A traditional leader in Matabeleland South Province, says outsiders should not harvest mopane worms (amacimbi / madora) in the region as they employ poor methods of harvesting.
This comes after the province has been inundated by people from various parts of the country who have been harvesting the worms since the onset of the rainy season.
Gwanda chief Khulumani Mathema told Sunday Southern Eye that the uncontrolled harvesting of mopane worms threatened the economic well-being of the region. He said:

Amacimbi have been one of the economic enablers for people in our districts.
Now they (outsiders) are chopping down trees, which are the major source of mopane worms breeding.
So one wonders why the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is not protecting our people.
This is not the way to live; you know these people come here and do their business of collecting mopane worms and some do not even have respect because they cut down the trees.
Another thing is they do not know the process of collecting because they are not supposed to take them when they are still on the tree.
Instead, they should wait until they are now moving off from the tree on their own.

Mathema said it is perplexing that people travel from faraway places to harvest Mopane worms in Matabeleland yet people from the region do not go to other regions to exploit natural resources found there. He said:

The locals know how to collect the worms and understand the whole process to harvest amacimbi.
My question is: Have they ever seen us going to their provinces to collect any of the things that their areas are well-known for?
These people do not respect us and our culture, which is not fair because we no longer live peacefully.
They should not come here because they are now ripping us off our environmental rights.
If they want mopane worms (amacimbi) they should get them from wherever they come from not here.

The traditional leader said their efforts to engage the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) on the issue have not been successful.
A Kaufusi villager, Reboni Noko said outsiders were also polluting the environment by leaving plastic bags and baby diapers everywhere.
Another villager, Relebile Nare said they were losing patience with the “foreigners” that had taken over their area.

Mopane Worms Harvesting: "Outsiders" Accused Of Destroying The Environment

A 21-year-old man teamed up with five accomplices to rob his father of US$14 000, 16 grammes of gold and mobile phones early this year, according to police.
The robbery happened in January this year, according to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/son-robs-dad-of-gold-us14-000/">Manica Post.</a>
<h2>What happened:</h2>
On January 14, 2022, Carlton Gadzira (21) of Odzi Business Centre hatched a plan to steal from his father, Mr David Gadzira whom he stays with in the same house.
Carlton in the company of five colleagues, armed themselves with machetes, sjamboks and iron bars and broke the doors to gain entry into the house.
They assaulted an occupant of the house, Ms Faith Marara and her son, <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/son-robs-dad-of-gold-us14-000/">Manica Post</a> reported citing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Manicaland District spokesperson, Detective Sergeant Shake Shanu.
They sprayed toxic substances in their faces, demanding cash.
They stabbed Mr Gadzira with a knife in the left thigh and ordered him to surrender money and cell phones.
The robbers stole US$14 000, an iPhone, 16 grammes of gold, a Samsung S20, and Techno Spark 5pro cellphones and left.
Mr Gadzira made a report at ZRP Odzi.
Investigations led to Carlton’s arrest on November 25. 
Upon being interviewed by the police, Carlton admitted that he had teamed up with Malvin Ruzani, Lovemore Tapura, Admire Tapura, Isaac Harukwani and Kenias Chimbandi to steal from his father.
The next day, Carlton and Ruzani appeared before the Mutare magistrate, Mr Langton Carter who remanded them in custody.
On December 8, detectives from CID Mutare went to Bulawayo to interview Harukwani, Chimbandi, Lovemore Tapura and Admire Tapura who were arrested by CID Gwanda on armed robbery charges.
It was established that they were behind the Odzi robbery.
Harukwani, Chimbandi, Lovemore Tapura and Admire Tapura appeared before Mr Malvin Shortgame at Tredgold Court in Bulawayo on the Odzi robbery charges.
They were remanded in custody awaiting transfer to Mutare after completing their outstanding robbery cases in Gwanda.

Man Killed For Proposing Love To A Married Woman

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported that four unknown machete-wielding assailants pounced on a gold mine in Zhombe and got away with 8kgs of pregnant carbon. 
In a report seen by Pindula News, ZRP said the suspects attacked and injured the security guards at the mine. Reads the statement:

The ZRP is investigating a murder case which occurred in Zhombe on 09/11/22 at around 0300 hours, where four unknown suspects who were armed with axes and machetes pounced at the mine and struck two security guards, Obert Moyo (56) and Herbert Zimbe (47), with axes before stealing 8kgs of pregnant carbon. The two victims sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Kwekwe General Hospital. Obert Moyo was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In the gold industry, activated carbon is used to recover gold from the gold-cyanide complex also known as the cyanide process. It is a technique for extracting gold from low-grade ore by converting the gold to a water-soluble coordination complex.
In January this year, ZRP arrested a man who was found in possession of 05 x 50kg sacks of pregnant carbons which were suspected to have been stolen from Gwanda, a gold mining town in Matabeleland South.
Meanwhile, ZRP Saruwe arrested Prosper Rocque Samanyanga (38) and Hardlife Chitsuro (32) on 09/11/22 for a case of unlawful entry into premises and theft, which occurred at Frenchoeck Farm on 04/11/22. 
It is alleged that the duo broke into a complainant’s storeroom and stole an ATA motorcycle. Police have since recovered the cycle, which had been sold in Darwendale.

Machete-wielding Robbers Pounce On Gold Mine And Get Away With 8kgs Of Pregnant Carbon

A 15-year-old girl from Gwanda was allegedly murdered by her 31-year-old husband who accused her of infidelity.
The now-deceased minor, Silindokuhle Sibanda, stayed with her husband Thandazani Ncube at his parents’ homestead in the Singukwe area.
It is alleged that Ncube assaulted the teenager in the middle of the night while they were on their way home after attending a party on 5 November 2022.
After the attack, Ncube carried the girl home in a wheelbarrow and placed her on their bed.
The minor was found dead the following morning.
Ncube was on Monday arraigned before Gwanda magistrate, Polite Ncube Banda, facing a murder charge. He was remanded in custody to 21 November.
Prosecuting, Ngonidzashe Shumba said Ncube attacked Silindokuhle on 5 November around 11 PM and the minor succumbed to head injuries the following day. Said Shumba:

On 5 November at around 11 PM Thandazani Ncube struck Silindokuhle Sibanda on the back of her head using an unknown object following an altercation. Ncube was accusing the girl of infidelity.
Silindokuhle succumbed to head injuries the following day at around 4 AM.

Earlier, Ncube’s mother, Sibongile Ncube, told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/man-31-assaults-15-year-old-wife-to-death/">Chronicle</a> that her son and Silindokuhle had gone to a party at a nearby homestead.
She said in the middle of the night she heard the sound of a wheelbarrow being pushed out of the yard.
Ncube said a few minutes later her son came rushing and informed her that his wife had a headache.
She said she went back to sleep assuming that Silindokuhle would be fine in the morning since it was just a headache.
However, when Ncube went to check on Silindokuhle the following morning, she found the girl lying on her bed covered in blood-soaked blankets. She said:

My son was also there in the same room and he told me that he was trying to discipline her for cheating on him with another man.
Upon checking Silindokuhle, I discovered that she was already dead.

Ncube said she immediately alerted neighbours who came to the homestead and community members effected a citizen arrest on Thandazani and escorted him to a police base in Stanmore leading to his arrest.

Man (31) Kills 15-year-old "Wife" Over Infidelity Allegations

Several families in Gwanda District are appealing for help after their homes were damaged by heavy rains that hit the area recently.
Two schools in the district also suffered damages as a result of the rains. 
The local Civil Protection Committee has been running around to provide some of the affected households with groceries and tents, according to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/rains-destroy-infrastructure-in-gwanda/">The Sunday News</a>. 
An assessment that has been conducted has shown that about 25 homesteads have been affected in Enyandeni and Gwakwe villages.
Affected families need building materials, groceries, blankets and clothing. 
In a report to the National Civil Protection Unit, Matabeleland South Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mrs Latiso Dlamini-Maseko said one child was injured during the incident. She said:

Strong winds and heavy rains left a trail of destruction in Gwanda District on the 27th of October 2022. About 25 households were affected by the heavy rains and the strong winds. The waiting shelter in Stanmore was partially destroyed and assessment is yet to be done. 
The provincial office managed to provide a few tents and some food items though there is a wide gap. As such the province is requesting for financial assistance to carry out more assessments and provide help for the affected.

A report has shown that two classroom blocks at Moodspruit Primary School and Kafusi High School have been affected. One classroom block was damaged in each of the schools.
Kafusi village head, Mr Solomon Hlali said the damaged classroom block had to be repaired as it would affect learning.

Rains Damage Homes, Schools In Gwanda

Five cattle rustlers have been sentenced to a combined 135 years in prison for stealing five head of cattle from Irisvale in Umzingwane District, <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/135-years-imprisonment-for-stealing-cattle/">Chronicle</a> reported.
The accused are Clifford Charm Kunene (34), Samuel Mathe (30), Gretta Ngwenya (42), and Njabulo Khanye (29) from Bulawayo and Gift Phiri (42) from Gwanda.
They pleaded not guilty to two counts of stock theft when they appeared before the Esigodini magistrate, Mrs Nomagugu Sibanda who convicted them due to overwhelming evidence.
They were each sentenced to 27 years imprisonment of which nine years were suspended on each sentence on the condition that they do not commit a similar offence within the next five years. 
Five years were further suspended on the condition that they pay US$900 restitution to the complainant.
<h2>Allegations:</h2>
Prosecutor, Mr Vhusani Moyo told the court that the gang first stole three cattle from the area in May and fled. 
In June, they went back to the same area where they stole five beasts.
Village anti-stock theft committee members intercepted the thieves as they were intending to transport the carcasses of the stolen animals in a Mazda Titan vehicle.
Villagers who had seen the vehicle in the area laid an ambush by blocking the path of the car with stones. He said the accused persons disembarked from the car and fled on foot.
Villagers gave chase and apprehended Clifford Charm Kunene while his accomplices fled. The matter was reported to the police and Kunene implicated his accomplices. The five carcases were recovered.

Five Cattle Rustlers Sentenced To A Combined 135 Years In Prison

Mines and Mining Development Minister, Winston Chitando, is expected to officially commission a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) project at Vumachikwe Mine in Gwanda, Matabeleland South Province, on Thursday, 5 May.
The miner said the US$1 million TSF project will ensure sustainable (environmentally- friendly) mining operations for the next two decades. Vumbachikwe acting mine manager, Nan Kananji said:

As a major player in our endeavour to put all hands on deck and create a US$12 billion gold mining industry for Zimbabwe by the year 2023 as espoused by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the national vision, we ought to also keep an eye on our carbon footprint because we have to bequeath not only a wealthy nation but an environmentally safe nation for future generations.
As a result, our stakeholders invested in this project to ensure that as we heed the Government’s call for the collective patriotic pursuit of a middle-income nation by the year 2030, we also don’t lose sight of the need to ensure the land from which we benefit is preserved.

According to an <a href="https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/handle/10986/35491#:~:text=Abstract,and%20to%20manage%20associated%20water.">online source</a>, Tailings Storage Facilities are engineered structures that comprise the confining embankments (commonly referred to as tailings dams) and associated works and are designed to contain tailings (residue following extraction of valuable material from metal ore processing) and to manage associated water.
TSF contains mixed waste material from mining processes in liquid or slurry form and must be responsibly managed to prevent impacts on human health and safety, the environment, and other infrastructure.

Mines Minister To Commission US$1 Million Vubachikwe Mine TSF Project

The renovation of Manama Mission Hospital in Gwanda district, Matabeleland South province has begun, a month after it was destroyed by violent winds.
The government has set aside $28 million to finance the refurbishment of the hospital mortuary and the maternity ward.
The hospital is one of the largest referral health centres in the province.
Matabeleland South provincial medical director Rudo Chikodzore Monday confirmed to Southern Eye that construction work has begun. She said:

We have already started refurbishing the hospital. We have begun by repairing the roof of the maternity building. We started last week. We are hoping that this will help to change the situation and decongest some wards which were accommodating women who are now due for delivery.
We are rendering all services to members of the public. The hospital, which used to be run by a church is now under the Department of Civil Protection, after it was destroyed by a storm.

Reports indicate that Manama villagers had resorted to keeping the bodies of their late relatives at home, instead of taking them to the mortuary which has not been fully operational for the past four years due to malfunctioning refrigerators.
Last month, the deputy minister of Health, Dr John Mangwiro said part of the funds allocated to the hospital should go towards the refurbishment of the mortuary.

Renovation Of Manama Mission Hospital Commences

A 9-year-old learner at Mafuko Primary School in Gwanda district in Matabeleland South has approached the High Court on an urgent basis seeking an order barring teachers in public schools from embarking on industrial action.
The minor Amohelang Ulukile Dube, who is being presented by her grandmother, Senzeni Nyathi, through her lawyers Ndove and Associates, filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court in Bulawayo.
Dube wants the High Court to bar teachers from going on strike over poor salaries and working conditions.
In papers before the court, the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta), Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions, Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), the chairperson of the Public Service Commission, Dr Vincent Hungwe, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cain Mathema, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Professor Paul Mavima and Minister of Finance and Economic Development Professor Mthuli Ncube, were cited as respondents.
The application follows the recent threats by teachers not to resume work when schools reopen for the second term.
The teachers are pushing for US$550 per month or its equivalent in local currency from the government and have threatened to boycott classes if their demands are not met.
In her founding affidavit, Nyathi said the actions of the cited teacher unions and their members to refuse to take up classes constitutes a violation of the children’s rights to education as enshrined in sections 75 and 81 of the country’s Constitution.
She wants the teachers’ unions together with their members interdicted from boycotting classes with all teachers being directed to report for duty within 48 hours of the granting of the order.
The applicant said in the event that the teachers refuse to comply, Government should be directed to take all measures to ensure that there is no interruption of classes in all public schools.

Gwanda Pupil (9), Drags Teachers To Court Over Strike Threats

Some smallholder irrigation farmers in Matebeleland South are counting their losses after frost destroyed some of their crops.
Zimbabwe experienced extremely cold weather conditions in some parts of the country this year and authorities are still assessing the impact.
Mrs Cecilia Sebata, a member of Pelele Irrigation Scheme in Ntalale area Ward 11, Gwanda, said a quarter of their produce was destroyed by frost. She said they mainly lost tomatoes and cabbages. She said:
<blockquote>
We were greatly affected by the cold weather as it cost us our crops. Our irrigation is 5,7 hectares and it has 81 farmers. We had planted tomatoes, vegetables, cabbages and wheat. About a quarter of what we had planted was destroyed by the cold. All the tomatoes were completely destroyed while some of the cabbages were affected. The wheat and vegetables are in a better state.
This is a huge loss to us because we were hoping to harvest our produce and sell it in order to get income. We are in business and such incidences are a major blow for us. This garden is a source of our livelihood. We have now removed the tomatoes and we have replanted them.

Mr John Sibanda, a member of Phaswana Garden in Ward 17, Gwanda said half of their crops were affected by frost when they were almost ready for harvesting. Added Sibanda: 

<blockquote>
Due to the cold spell, all the maize crop dried up, we also lost tomatoes and cabbages. We were really optimistic for a good harvest but we lost half of our crops.
We have removed all those crops that were affected by frost and we have replanted. The cold was too much this time around and the crops failed to withstand it.

Bambanani Irrigation Scheme in Ward 11 in Mangwe was affected by frost. 
Matabeleland South Acting Provincial Agricultural Officer, Mr Mkhunjulelwa Ndlovu said a number of farmers across the province lost their tomatoes, cabbages and maize. 
Smallholder irrigation farmers have also said markets for their produce had dwindled due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, they say a ban on buses and kombis has made it difficult to transport their to get their goods to customers in the Gwanda CBD and Bulawayo.

Some Irrigation Farmers Count Losses As Frost Destroy Crops

A grief-stricken woman from Gwanda was overwhelmed with sorrow following the death of her mother in Mpopoma, Bulawayo and decided to follow her to the other world shortly after her burial.
Sithembiso Phiri-Sibanda who stayed with her husband in Gwanda committed suicide by hanging herself with a wrapping cloth a few hours after burying her mother, Rita Phiri (65), who reportedly died in her sleep on Sunday.
Phiri-Sibanda had travelled to Bulawayo to attend her mother’s funeral but ended up handing herself in one of the rooms.
The deceased’s visibly shocked husband, Obadiah Sibanda said he was at a loss for words following the double tragedy that befell the family. He told Chronicle:
<blockquote>We went to bury my mother-in-law at around 11 am. I had not realised that she did not go to the cemetery. When we returned from the cemetery, we had lunch and neighbours dispersed to their homes.</blockquote>
Sibanda said his wife took a bath after which she went into one of the rooms intending to change clothes.
However, after she failed to come out of the room after a considerable period of time, Sibanda said efforts were made to look for her and they discovered her room was locked.
They tried to knock on the door and there was no response, and on peering through the window, they discovered Phiri-Sibanda’s body hanging from the trusses.
She did not leave a suicide note.
