The Minister of Information Communication Technology and Courier Services <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Tatenda_Mavetera">Tatenda Mavetera</a> said that Starlink, a satellite internet provider, should adhere to Zimbabwe’s existing laws to be allowed to operate in the country, <a href="https://businesstimes.co.zw/adhere-to-zim-laws-minister-tells-starlink/">reported Business Times</a>.
Starlink is operated by American aerospace company SpaceX owned by billionaire Elon Musk.
Mavetera made the comments while responding to questions in the National Assembly last week.
She revealed that the Postal and Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) was considering a proposal by Starlink to operate in Zimbabwe.
Former ICT Minister Supa Mandiwanzira who is also Nyanga South MP (ZANU PF), asked Mavetera how the Government was to deal with fake news and negativity on X, formerly Twitter, against the country’s leadership and the ZANU PF party.
On 10 October 2023, the European Union (EU) issued a warning to Musk over the alleged disinformation about the Hamas attack on Israel, including fake news and “repurposed old images”, on X.
Mandiwanzira asked whether the government will consider the complaint to Musk by the EU on misinformation peddled by X in licensing Starlink, or not. He said:
This concerns public statements made by the Ministry and POTRAZ, particularly with regards to the licensing of a service by Mr Elon Musk of Starlink.

Given what the EU did yesterday, that it wrote to Mr Musk expressing its disappointment with regards to one of Mr Musk’s channel which is X, previously known as Twitter where the EU complained about misinformation being peddled by Twitter.
…given the concerns raised by the EU regarding one of Mr Musk’s channels, if there is consideration by the Minister to equally express concern to Mr Musk, particularly with regards to the content disparaging of our leadership, our President, and sometimes our political party on X in Zimbabwe and whether actions by EU will be considered when deciding licensing of Starlink.

In response, Mavetera affirmed that Starlink, like any other company intending to operate in Zimbabwe, should follow the country’s laws. She said:

As Zimbabwe, we have a policy that is clear that we want to engage as a country and allow any people that would want to trade with us to do it quite openly.
Indeed, looking at Starlink, it is a company that has shown interest but for us as a ministry, we are waiting upon POTRAZ for them to also be guided by the regulation which guides us.
There is a need to follow all procedures and protocols and that is what we are waiting for. As for now, they have not paid the application fees for them to be able to say they are willing.
They have shown interest but they have not been able to adhere to our rules and regulations as a country.
Indeed, for us, we have policies like the Patriotic Bill that guide us. Any country that needs to deal with us needs to adhere to that and Starlink, the moment it will have to agree to our rules and regulations, it will be able to come and trade with us and go along with our laws as well.

Starlink Should Adhere To Zimbabwe's Laws, Says ICT Minister

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Postal_and_Telecommunications_Regulatory_Authority_of_Zimbabwe/">Postal Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ)</a> has announced plans to provide mobile computer training in villages starting next year. The goal is to ensure that citizens make full use of the Community Information Centres (CICs).
With nearly 200 operational CICs in Zimbabwe, including in rural areas, POTRAZ aims to equip the public with the necessary skills for efficient internet access and usage. The announcement was made by POTRAZ Director General Dr <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gift_Machengete/">Gift Machengete</a> during the institution’s strategic planning workshop. <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/potraz-embarks-on-village-based-mobile-computer-trainings/">The Chronicle</a> quotes him as saying:

In 2024 the Authority will start village-based mobile training sessions in basic computer appreciation with a view to improving CIC patronage as people would appreciate the importance and usefulness of the centres more, once they have basic knowledge of computers and the Internet.
Although the number of people visiting CICs continues to increase steadily, the Authority is of the opinion that the CICs are under-utilised, stemming from a lack of appreciation of the benefits of the sites to individuals and communities as well as a general lack of computer skills among rural folk.

Dr Machengete said 32 additional CICs are currently under construction, bringing the total number of CICs to 202 once they are completed. Dr Machengete considers this a significant milestone in achieving universal access and usage of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Zimbabwe. 
POTRAZ, in collaboration with the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, began commissioning CICs in 2016, with the goal of serving underserved rural communities. They initially targeted to establish a total of 210 CICs.
Most CICs provide various services such as banking, internet access, computer training, research support for schools and communities, and money transfer services. These CICs have also facilitated the establishment of computer laboratories in previously marginalised schools, particularly in rural areas, through the distribution of computers.
<h3>Importance of the POTRAZ program</h3>
This comes amid concerns that Zimbabwe may not be ready to fully benefit from the emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution. Many Zimbabweans and institutions are not prepared for AI, despite its potential impact comparable to the Industrial Revolution. The question of whether Zimbabwe is AI-ready was raised at a Unicaf-organized event, and the majority believed that the country was not prepared <a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2023/10/zim-not-ready-to-take-advantage-of-what-ai-has-to-offer/">Techzim’s Leonard Sengere</a> reported.
Lack of access to computers and the internet is a major obstacle in utilising AI effectively. Internet penetration stands at 65.2%, while only 58.8% of households have smartphones, and a mere 14.2% of the population has access to a computer. Additionally, only 53% of households have electricity. However, even if individuals themselves do not have access to AI technology, they may still benefit indirectly if the government and private sector utilise AI to improve efficiency and lower costs. Nonetheless, the ideal situation would be for individuals to utilize AI for their own purposes hence the need toward bridging the digital divide.

POTRAZ Has Announced Plans To Provide Mobile Computer Training In Villages

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_Institute_of_Technology/">Harare Institute of Technology (HIT)</a> in Zimbabwe has made significant progress in the production of lithium batteries for passenger vehicles, the state-run <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/zimbabwe-starts-lithium-car-batteries-production/">Chronicle</a> reported. This breakthrough has the potential to accelerate the country’s involvement in clean energy technologies. Zimbabwe boasts one of the world’s largest reserves of hard-rock lithium, a crucial mineral used in the production of lithium-ion batteries.
HIT has successfully purified lithium phosphate and manufactured prototype cells, marking a significant step towards commercial production. The university’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Quinton_Kanhukamwe/">Quinton Kanhukamwe</a>, announced their vision to commence commercial production of lithium batteries for vehicles in 2024 during HIT’s 14th graduation ceremony where President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa/">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> capped 639 students, with 38.8% of them being female graduates. Dr. Kanhukamwe said:

As a result, your university has been successful in developing a lithium phosphate 3.2V, 60Ah battery cell, when coupled in either parallel for more voltage or series for enhanced current, the cells will produce sufficient power to drive passenger vehicles.
Our vision is to start commercial production of lithium batteries for vehicles in 2024.

He expressed pride in the university’s engineering and technology graduates, highlighting their strong entrepreneurial skills and determination to establish high-tech enterprises. 
Dr. Kanhukamwe also highlighted the progress made in various sectors of the economy alongside the breakthrough in lithium battery production. HIT is collaborating with Kosygin Russian State University and local universities to improve cotton output, which is currently low compared to Russia and India. The focus is on cotton seed development to increase farmers’ income and boost exports.
HIT is also engaged in designing and manufacturing transformers for commercial sale and has launched three spin-off companies. These spin-offs include InstiBio, which focuses on agricultural and medical biotechnology, InstiRad, which provides affordable radiography services to underserved communities, and InstiQuip, which offers machine design expertise.
The institute has expanded research collaborations with universities in China, Russia, the United States, Indonesia, and Belarus, aiming to enhance research quality and innovation. Additionally, HIT has established a training collaboration with Rwanda’s Ministry of Health to enrol students in radiography and ultrasound degree programs. Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jenfan_Muswere/">Jenfan Muswere</a> has announced that Zimbabwe has received an application from Starlink to obtain a license for offering satellite internet services.
Muswere stated that the application is currently under review by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Postal_and_Telecommunications_Regulatory_Authority_of_Zimbabwe/">Postal &amp; Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ)</a>. It is anticipated that the application will likely be approved. Muswere who was the Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services before his recent appointment to the Ministry of Information made the remarks during a meeting with editorial executives of privately-owned media organisations. He said:

Starlink is a satellite internet venture owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Starlink has already introduced its services in various African countries, but it still needs to obtain regulatory approvals in many other nations.

Itel S23+ With Curved Screen To Be Released In Zimbabwe

Global online rental company Airbnb has appointed Zimbabwean Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/James_Manyika/">James Manyika</a> to its board, recognising his expertise in AI and its impact on society.
Manyika, currently a senior vice president at Google, holds two master’s degrees and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics from the University of Zimbabwe and Oxford University. Airbnb confirmed his appointment, with CEO Brian Chesky stating that Manyika had been advising the company since 2018. Chesky said in a statement:

Airbnb Appoints Zimbabwean AI Expert James Manyika To Its Board

Zimbabwean scientist Dr. Phylis Makurunje is leading a team at Bangor University Nuclear Futures Institute in Wales to develop a nuclear system for powering rockets. The technology aims to significantly reduce travel time to Mars, potentially cutting it from nine months to four to six months. The team is also working on nuclear fuel cells, the size of poppy seeds, to provide energy for sustaining life on the Moon, supporting NASA’s goal of establishing a lunar outpost by 2030.
The university intends to test the nuclear fuel in the coming months. The microgenerators developed for the Moon could also have applications on Earth, such as providing electricity in disaster-stricken areas.
Dr. Makuranje, a graduate of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), stated that the new technology has the potential to reduce the travel time to Mars by almost 50%. She told BBC News:

It is very powerful – it gives very high thrust, the push it gives to the rocket. This is very important because it enables rockets to reach the farthest planets.
With nuclear thermal propulsion – you’re looking at about four to six months getting to Mars. The current duration is nine months plus.

Prior to that, she completed a Masters in Materials Engineering and a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand and NUST, respectively. She humorously refers to herself as the “odd girl who made wire cars.” She said in a previous interview:

Zimbabwean Scientist Dr. Phylis Makurunje Leads A Team Developing Nuclear-Powered Rockets At A University In Wales

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has issued a warning to the public regarding the use of unauthorised satellite internet service in the country as SpaceX’s Starlink equipment trickle into the Zimbabwean market. The regulator said possessing or operating telecommunication equipment or systems without a valid license, certificate, or authorization from POTRAZ is considered a legal offence.
In a notice seen by Pindula News, POTRAZ outlined the licensing framework for satellite internet services in Zimbabwe. According to current regulations, satellite internet can be provided by public network operators or foreign-based satellite service providers/operators. Foreign providers can offer their services in Zimbabwe either through partnerships with licensed local network operators or by obtaining their own licenses.

1) The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) regulates the provision of postal and telecommunications services in Zimbabwe. The mandate of POTRAZ includes licensing of postal and telecommunications service providers and enforcement of compliance with licence conditions and applicable laws for the sector. The licences are issued in terms of the Postal and Telecommunications Act [Chapter 12:05) (The Act), as read with the Postal and Telecommunications (Licensing, Registration and Certification) Regulations, 2021,
2) Under the current licensing framework, the provision of internet by means of satellite systems can be done by Public Network Operators or by foreign-based satellite service providers/operators. A foreign-based Satelite Service Provider/Operator can offer services in Zimbabwe using any of the following options: –
i) Through duly licensed Public Network Operators. Under this arrangement the Satellite Operator and the local network. Operators enter a Virtual Network Operator (VNO) agreement, that must be approved by the Authority, to ensure that the Public Network Operator meets legal and regulatory requirements stipulated in the licence.
ii) A Satellite Service Provider/Operator can apply for their own licence that would authorise them to provide services.
iii) End users can apply for private network licences which would authorise the utilisation of externally operated Satellite systems.
3) The Act prohibits the provision of telecommunication services or operation of telecommunication systems, including the possession or control of radio transmission equipment without a licence, certificate or authorisation expressly given by POTRAZ.
4) It has come to the attention of the Authority that there are entities masquerading as licensed satellite service Providers or local agents accredited to distribute customer premises equipment for the provision of satellite-based internet services to unsuspecting members of the public.
5) The public is reminded that only service providers who are licensed or authorised by POTRAZ are permitted at law to provide telecommunication services or distribute/install customer premises equipment for purposes of providing telecommunications services including satellite-based broadband internet services to customers or end-users.
6) The public is further reminded that local licensed Operators are only allowed to distribute satellite-based internet services if their VNO agreements have been approved by the Authority.
7) Being found in possession of or operating a telecommunication equipment/ system without a valid licence, certificate or authorisation from POTRAZ is a statutory offence punishable at law.

The RAM is what keeps Apps and data that’s currently in use open the phone. The larger it is the faster the phone can do tasks.
The itel S23 has 8GB of RAM, which can be extended by another 8GB for a total 16GB RAM.
The itel P40 Plus has 4GB of RAM, which can be extended by another 4GB for a total 8GB RAM. While this is half of the S23, a total 8GB RAM is quite a lot. There are many phones in use today that only have a total 2GB  RAM.
 
<h2>Cameras</h2>
On the camera front, the S23 has a 50 Megapixel back camera, which is a lot for its $119 price. The P40 Plus only has 13 megapixels on the rear. 
Both phones have an 8 Megapixels selfie camera.
 
<h2>Battery Size</h2>
The battery size is one point where the P40 Plus beats the competition. It has a 7000 mAh capacity battery supporting 18W fast-charging .
The S23 on the other had only has a 5 000 mAh battery and supports much slower charging at just 10W.
 
<h2>Processor</h2>
The two phones both have an octa-core Unisoc T606 processor.  They are the same. This is an entry level processor which explains why it’s in phones priced less than $120.
 
<h2>Size of phone</h2>
Some people like smaller phones, some bigger ones. A generally standard phone size today is 6.6 inches.
The P40 Plus is a much bigger phone with a display size of 6.8 inches. 
The S23 is smaller at 6.6 inches.
 
<h2>Android Version</h2>
The itel P40 Plus runs the latest Android 13 which was released in August last year.  The itel S23 runs Android 12. While this may be updated to Android 13, when that will happen is not clear.
Android 13 has a couple of benefits over Android 12. It features better speed of tyhe phone, improved navigation, easy to use shortcut for the QR code scanner. it also has a better user interface in general.

The P40 Plus is priced lower in Zimbabwe but not by a big difference. On Pindula it’s $116.
The itel S23 is $119. The 256GB version of the itel S23 is $139.
 
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
People are often surprised when we tell them that we recommend the P40 Plus over the S23. The reason for us is simple.
The features where the S23 beats the P40 Plus are just RAM and Camera Resolution. While these two things are important, the total 8GB RAM that you can get on the P40 Plus is more than enough to run some intensive applications and also not slow you down for any practical uses. 
The camera on the P40 Plus, while just 13 Megapixels (and 8MB selfie camera), is very good for everyday photos of parties, kids playing, selfies and business use. The only instance where the 50 Megapixel camera on the itel S23 would matter is when you need to print your photos.
The itel P40 Plus beats the S23 where it matters the most – the battery. With 7000 mAh, this is massive battery that will last you probably an extra day compared to the S23. 
What’s more, the P40 Plus is cheaper!

Tecno Phone Prices in Zimbabwe (July 2023)

The latest budget phone from itel is now available in Zimbabwe and it’s the itel A60s.
For the first time in Zimbabwe, itel has released a phone with 128GB storage memory and 4GB RAM which is priced at less than $100. The phone also has RAM extension for an extra 4GB, to make a total 8GB. It comes with 4G LTE.
The phone is now available at itel in the country. The A60s is a higher capacity version of the standard A60 which was released in May but has 32GB storage and 2GB RAM.
The release of the A60s also follows the release of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/market/itel-s23-22-20230608161024425383/">itel S23 earlier this month which was priced at $119</a>. 
Before the A60s, smartphones that had 128GB of storage were generally priced at more than $110. Itel has therefore broken new ground as far as the capacity and price of entry-level smartphones.

Take photos without any posing</h2>
Yes, posing for photos is good for specific events like birthdays, weddings, and such. However, photos, where no one is posing, can be much better. They called candid photos. You observe people just going on with their business at your house or party and you just take a photo without asking anyone to pose. These photos can make very good memories.
 
<h2>Tap on the screen to focus on the thing you’re taking</h2>
To make the phone’s camera focus on a specific thing you’re taking a photo of, tap on that thing before taking the photo. It can be a person, a car, a dog, or a building – just tap the screen and let the camera focus on it.
 
<h2>Avoid using Flash whenever you can</h2>
While flash is good for adding light, it often distorts the natural feel of the photo you’re taking. It’s worse at night. As much as possible try to use other light in the place you are in. For example, when inside a room, switch on the lights of the room and use those instead of the phone’s flash. If it’s day outside, open the curtains to natural light in. Or even going outside to use the sun’s natural light.

Avoid facing the source of the light. If it’s during the day and you’re outside, make sure the sun is behind you the one taking the photo. 
Cameras just don’t do well when they are looking directly into the light, just like humans also don’t see very well when their eyes are facing the source of light.
 
<h2>Use sunsets and sunrises to your advantage.</h2>
Sunsets and sunrises result in very good photos. And sometimes you can even break the rule above by facing the source of the sunset. You will usually shoot very creative photos which you can use as a wallpaper on your phone.
 
<h2>If you can avoid zooming in</h2>
Zooming in to take a photo often results in poor-quality photos. They can be grainy, shaky, and generally unclear. Better get closer to something if you can, than to try and take a photo from afar by zooming.
 
<h2>Ita steady</h2>
This may seem obvious to many, but we will mention it anyway. It pays to hold your phone still when taking photos. Phone cameras are very sensitive to movement and shaking will produce bad quality.
 
<h2>Try HDR mode</h2>
On almost all the phones, there’s a feature called HDR (High Dynamic Range). You will see it when you open your camera on the phone. It helps with balancing our light and dark things in the photo so that as much as possible what is taken in the photo is close to what you’re seeing with your eyes.
It can help to take a photo with HDR off and then also try with HDR on so that you keep the better one.

How to take better photos with your phone

Last week, itel launched the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/market/itel-p40-plus-22-20230611105441250523/">P40 Plus</a>. The main difference is that the P40 has a massive 7000 mAh battery, compared to the 6000 mAh on the P40 standard.
The other big difference is the size of the phone. The P40 Plus is slightly bigger with a 6.8-inch display. The P40 has a 6.6-inch display.
The processor is also a big difference between the 2 phones. The P40 Plus has a much faster Tiger T606 CPU which runs at 1.6GHz base frequency. The P40 Standard on the other hand has a base frequency of 1.2Ghz.

And don’t let it discharge below 20%.
One of the things that still surprises a lot of people is that charging a battery to 100% is not a good thing. It really is not. Charging your battery to 100% continuously damages the battery. Worse, leaving the phone on the charger after it has reached 100% damages it even more.
<h2>Why?</h2>
A phone battery comes under a lot of stress when it is fully charged. It also comes under a lot of stress when it is empty.
In simple terms, the battery has to do a lot of work to get it charged to 100%. It also has to do a lot of work to charge if it goes all the way to 0%.
This extra amount of work reduces the lifespan of a battery. Now since batteries nowadays are not easily removable, if a battery’s lifespan has been reduced, it means generally the phone’s lifespan also reduces.
<h2>Recommendation</h2>
The best charge range is between 20% and 90% battery full. This means it is a very bad idea to leave your phone on the charger overnight. – the battery will charge to 100% and then it will keep charging every time it loses just a bit of charge. It will continuously do this the whole night damaging the battery significantly.
The best solution is to buy a power bank which you connect to your phone when you see it going down to 20%, and then leave it charging to around 80% or 90% power.
<h2>Recent Technology</h2>
New technology in some recent phones is helping by managing this process of charging under 100%.
Smartphones like the iPhone 14, Samsung Galaxy S23 and Google  Pixel 7 for example will only charge to about 80% if you leave them connected through the night, and will quickly charge the rest just before you wake up.
But most phones in use in Africa, don’t really have this smart technology yet, so you have to manage the charging yourself.

Don't Charge Your Phone Battery to 100%

Itel has just released another flavour of the P40. The first P40 came in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/05/07/itel-p40-the-brands-top-phone-is-now-available-in-zimbabwe-6000-mah-battery-4g-lte/">last month in May</a>, breaking the record for having the most storage in an itel phone – 128GB. That record has since been broken by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/market/itel-s23-22-20230608161024425383/">itel S23</a> released last week which comes with 8GB RAM.

7000 mAh Battery. The itel P40 Plus is the latest in the line-up

Earlier in the week, Pindula wrote that <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/06/05/itel-to-launch-8gb-ram-50mp-camera-phone-the-s23-selling-for-less-than-140/">itel was on the verge of launching its latest phone</a>, the itel S23, in India.
It turns out the company was already preparing for a global release.
The itel S23, the highest-capacity itel phone, is now available in Zimbabwe. Itel is marketing the phone as “Super Smooth and Colorful”
The phone comes with 8GB RAM, which is extended by another 8GB virtual RAM for a total 16GB RAM. The storage memory is 128GB. Of note is the camera which is a 50-megapixel camera. All this is coming at a price between $115 and $135 in Zimbabwe.
The phone also comes in a 4GB RAM version which is priced between $105 and $120.

Renowned US-based tech reviewer MKBHD has referred to the technology powering Apple’s new Vision Pro mixed reality headset as “the closest thing I have experienced to magic”
<h2>What is the Vision Pro?</h2>
The Apple Vision Pro is a mixed-reality headset that was announced on June 5, 2023.
A mixed-reality headset is a device you wear on your face that allows you to see things that you can’t touch physically. For example, it can make you see a hyena walking in your own living room as part of a game. You can also use it to watch a movie on a TV  that does not exist physically.
Samsung, Sony, Facebook, Microsoft, and other companies already make mixed-reality headsets.
Now Apple, the maker of the iPhone, has announced theirs. It is coming out in 2024 and it will cost $3500 in the US. Of course this means that in Zimbabwe the price will be about US $5,000. Or, 2 maHonda Fit. So yes, not for the masses yet.

As you can see from the comparison table, the phones are quite similar, with the exception of 3 things where the Itel P40 is better.
<h2>Is the Itel P40 a better phone than the Tecno Pop 7 Pro</h2>
The answer is Yes.
The Itel p40 has a larger battery at 6000 mAh, compared to the Tecno’s 5000 mAh. The itel P40 battery also charges faster.
The Itel P40’s Unisoc SC9863A is a slightly better processor than the Tecno Pop 7 Pro’s Helio A22. This means the P40 is faster in general even though they are both entry-level processors.
<h2>Which one would you choose?</h2>
At the end of the day, brands are a powerful thing. Some just love Tecno and others love Itel and that plays a part.  Pindula would love to know in the comments which of the two phones you would take if given a choice.

Itel P40 and Tecno Pop 7 Pro Compared. Which one is better?

Itel is set to launch its highest RAM and Camera capacity budget phone later this month. The phone, called the Itel S23 will come with 8GB of RAM and another 8GB of extended RAM making it 16GB of RAM in total. it will also come with a 50-megapixel camera.
The phone will be launched in India on the Amazon platform later this June. According to a report by an Indian phone publication, <a href="https://www.91mobiles.com/hub/itel-s23-india-launch-timeline-specs-price-range/">91mobiles</a>, the phone will retail at a price between 8,000 and 9,000 Rupees.

It is not clear yet if itel will also be distributing the phone in Zimbabwe via official channels. If it does, the phone would likely retail between $120 and $140 given the Indian price. If the Itel S23 is not available via the official channels, then it will likely still be available via gray imports from India.

The US Air Force has denied reports of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) simulation in which a drone killed its operator to accomplish its mission. A US air force official, Col Tucker “Cinco” Hamilton, had earlier described a virtual test involving a drone controlled by AI, which killed its operator to eliminate interference with the mission to destroy an enemy’s air defense systems. Hamilton, the chief of AI test and operations with the US air force, said during the Future Combat Air and Space Capabilities Summit in London in May:

The system started realising that while they did identify the threat, at times the human operator would tell it not to kill that threat, but it got its points by killing that threat.
So what did it do? It killed the operator. It killed the operator because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective.
We trained the system: ‘Hey don’t kill the operator – that’s bad. You’re gonna lose points if you do that.’ So what does it start doing? It starts destroying the communication tower that the operator uses to communicate with the drone to stop it from killing the target.

Hamilton, who is an experimental fighter test pilot, also warned against relying too much on AI and emphasised the need for ethics in AI.
However, a US Air Force spokesperson, Ann Stefanek, denied that any such simulation took place. In a statement to Insider, Stefanek said:

The Department of the Air Force has not conducted any such AI-drone simulations and remains committed to ethical and responsible use of AI technology. It appears the colonel’s comments were taken out of context and were meant to be anecdotal.

The US military has been using AI in several areas, including controlling an F-16 fighter jet.
Hamilton has previously emphasised the need to make AI more robust and to have greater awareness of why the software code is making certain decisions.

Tecno Mobile Zimbabwe launched its latest phone, the Camon 20 and Camon 20 Pro in Zimbabwe this week.
The phone was launched at an event in the country’s capital, Harare on 30 May, marking its availability in Zimbabwe. Also available alongside the standard Camon 20, is the Camon 20 Pro.
The phone can now be bought at official Tecno retailers throughout the country. 
<h2>Camon 20 Price</h2>
 The Camon 20’s price range at retailers in Zimbabwe will be from about $210 to $230.
The Tecno Camon is a mid-range phone, which means higher capacity than typical Tecno entry-level smartphones like Pop. The price is a reflection of that.
The Camon 20 Pro on the other hand is ranging between $235 and $260.

The 20 standard has a Mediatek Helio G85 while the Pro version has a Mediatek Helio G99 processor.
While at face value this difference may seem small, its impact is very significant. The G99 processor on the Camon 20 Pro is a much newer processor than the G85 and far outpaces the standard one on the general speed of the phone. It just processes things faster. It is also more efficient in power management so the battery lasts longer after every charge.

Tecno Camon 20 Now Available In Zimbabwe, Price, Full Specs

Tecno will be releasing its latest phone the Camon 20, in Zimbabwe this week. The company started teasing the launch of the phone in the country on its <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tecnomobileszw/">Instagram page</a> last week, on 22 May.
The posts promise that the Tecno Camon 20 will be launched tomorrow, 30 May. As far as Pindula knows, the Camon is the only phone that Tecno Mobile Zimbabwe does a launch event for.
<h2>Availability and Price</h2>
The phone was announced globally on the 9th of May. The slight delay with Zimbabwe was probably due to the need to release it once people can actually buy it locally.
Going by the current prices of its predecessor the, Camon 19, the price of the Camon 20 in Zimbabwe will be between $200 and $300 depending on which variation you buy.
Material on the official Tecno Mobile website suggests the company is placing emphasis on the phone’s camera. The phone has a triple-camera system on the back, consisting of a 64MP main sensor, a 2MP depth sensor, and a QVGA AI sensor.

<h2>Camon 20 5G?</h2>
Globally, the Camon also has a 5G variation of the phone. It’s not clear yet if this is going to be launched in Zimbabwe. At the moment, Zimbabwe <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/05/29/5g-network-coverage-in-zimbabwe-where-can-you-find-it-should-you-buy-a-5g-phone/">is not considered a country that has extensive 5G coverage</a>. Even though Econet launched 5G in 2022, it still just a few 5G base stations in parts of Harare.
A 5G version will therefore not be very relevant currently unless one lives or works within the range of one of the 22 5G base stations in the country. However, one may still want to buy it if they think this is the phone they will be using for the next 4 or so years. This also means one thinks the country’s economy will get better soon enough to encourage the deployment of 5G by Econet and NetOne.

Tecno To Release Latest, Camon 20, In Zimbabwe This Week

Econet announced the launch of its 5G network in Zimbabwe in February 2022. The company rolled out 5G with the help of Ericsson. Econet is the only mobile operator in Zimbabwe currently that has 5G. 
In general, 5G offers internet speeds that are up to 10 times that of 4G. 
With the release of more and more 5G capable phones globally, Zimbabweans may not be clear if these phones are relevant in Zimbabwe.

According to the telecoms industry regulator, POTRAZ,  Econet has a total of 22 5G base stations currently (<a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2023/04/potraz-q4-2022-report-out-internet-penetration-now-65-3-theres-more/">based on December 2022 data</a>).  In March this year, Econet promised to deploy more 5G sites around the country but did not commit to any numbers.
<h2>Does it make sense to buy a 5G phone in Zimbabwe?</h2>
As you can see above, the total number of 5G base stations in the whole country is just 22. This is a very small number, especially considering that 5G has a limited range compared to 4G and 3G. 
To put it into perspective, Econet has over 900 4G base stations in Zimbabwe. Based on these numbers, in a practical sense, we can’t really say there is 5G in Zimbabwe.
In the rare case that you live or work in one of the 22 locations listed above that have 5G, it will be worth it for you, yes. Otherwise, there’s no point.
<h2>Does NetOne have 5G?</h2>
As of the writing of this article, NetOne does not have any commercial 5G sites in Zimbabwe.
What about Telecel? We cannot even talk of 5G when it comes to Telecel. The company is struggling to deploy a 4G network, with only 17 of them so far according to the industry regulators report.
<h2>Which phones available in Zimbabwe have 5G?</h2>
This is a hard question to answer because most of the phones in Zimbabwe do not come into the country through the manufacturer’s official channels. 
People buy mobile phones that were made for other markets like US, UK, South Africa, and Australia (basically where Zimbabweans in the diaspora are found). They also buy phones meant for Asia that are imported via market the Dubai gray market channels. 
This means that 5G phones available in these countries can also generally be available on the local market. But again, there’s no point in buying a 5G mobile phone right now. At least it being 5G must not be the reason for buying it.

5G Network Coverage In Zimbabwe - Where Can You Find It? Should You Buy a 5G Phone?

A New York lawyer is facing <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">disciplinary action</a> after his <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">law firm</a> used an <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">AI tool</a>, ChatGPT, for legal research and cited non-existent cases. The case in question involved a plaintiff suing an airline over an alleged personal injury.
The plaintiff’s legal team submitted a brief citing several previous court cases in an attempt to prove that the case should move forward based on precedent. However, the airline’s legal team later wrote to the judge to say they could not find several of the cases referenced in the brief, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65735769">BBC</a> reported.
It emerged that the research had not been prepared by Peter LoDuca, the lawyer for the plaintiff, but by a colleague of his at the same law firm, Steven A Schwartz, who has been an attorney for more than 30 years. He told the court he was “unaware that its content could be false”.
AI tools such as ChatGPT have the potential to produce <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">inaccurate information</a>, as warned by the tool’s developers. There have been concerns over the potential risks of <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">artificial intelligence</a>, including the potential spread of misinformation and bias. Both lawyers have been ordered to explain why they should not be disciplined at a hearing on 8 June.
Judge Castel said the court was faced with an “unprecedented circumstance” after a filing was found to reference example legal cases that did not exist. Castel wrote in an order demanding the man’s legal team explain itself:

Six of the submitted cases appear to be bogus judicial decisions with bogus quotes and bogus internal citations.
</blockquote>
In his written statement, Mr Schwartz clarified that Mr LoDuca had not been part of the research and had no knowledge of how it had been carried out. Mr Schwartz added that he “greatly regrets” relying on the chatbot, which he said he had never used for legal research before and was “unaware that its content could be false”.
He has vowed to never use AI to “supplement” his legal research in future “without absolute verification of its authenticity”. Screenshots attached to the filing appear to show a conversation between Mr Schwarz and ChatGPT.
One of the cases that no other lawyer could find but referenced by Mr Schwarz is Varghese v. China Southern Airlines Co Ltd. Reads one message between Mr Schwarz and ChatGpt:

ChatGPT responds that yes, it is – prompting “S” to ask: “What is your source”.
After “double checking”, ChatGPT responds again that the case is real and can be found on legal reference databases such as LexisNexis and Westlaw.
It says that the other cases it has provided to Mr Schwartz are also real.
Since its launch in November 2022, millions of people have used ChatGPT, an <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">AI tool</a> that can answer questions in natural language and mimic different writing styles. However, there are concerns over its potential to spread misinformation and bias, as it uses the 2021 internet as its database.
