The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) recently released the weather report and forecast for Zimbabwe. The report, issued at 1600 hrs on Tuesday, 5th December 2023, is valid until Thursday, 7th December 2023.
According to the MSD, Tuesday experienced mostly sunny conditions across the country, with temperatures rising as expected, especially in low-lying areas. Maximum temperatures ranged between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, pressure was slightly rising over the Southeastern coasts of South Africa.
The forecast for Wednesday, 6th December 2023, predicts mostly sunny and hot conditions in the northern areas of Zimbabwe. This includes Matabeleland North, all the Mashonaland provinces, the northern parts of Midlands and Manicaland, as well as the Harare metropolitan provinces. On the other hand, the southern parts of the country, including Matabeleland South, Bulawayo metropolitan, the southern parts of Midlands and Manicaland, as well as Masvingo provinces, are expected to experience windy, warm, and partly cloudy conditions.
The MSD highlighted that high temperatures can cause dehydration and other related diseases. It was also noted that hot conditions increase the extent of evapotranspiration and dehydration. Additionally, fluctuation of temperatures between night and day may affect the body’s health, leading to common colds, influenza, fever, and asthma.
The MSD encouraged the public to take enough fluids to compensate for water loss due to dehydration, with advice from medical doctors. Additionally, people were urged to put out any fires found in open veld fires and road-sides, and not to leave any fire unattended. It was also recommended to keep warm at night and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, especially during midday. For those prone to respiratory illnesses, having antihistamines, respirators, or inhalers on standby was suggested.
Looking ahead to Thursday, 7th December 2023, the MSD provided a weather outlook. It indicated that cool and cloudy morning conditions are expected over Mashonaland East and Central, Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland South, and the Harare metropolitan provinces. However, as the day progresses, the cloud cover should break up, allowing temperatures to rise to the warm category. In contrast, the western provinces, including Matabeleland North, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, and Mashonaland West, are expected to remain mostly sunny and hot.

The Zimbabwe Meteorological Services Department says scattered thundershowers with heavy downpours are expected in some parts of the country tomorrow. In a weather report and forecast released in conjunction with the Civil Protection Department, the MSD said there is a risk of lightning strikes during this period, even when clouds are distant.
MSD reported that on Tuesday, there were isolated thunderstorms in Matabeleland provinces. Wednesday started sunny and mild, temperatures became hot. Clouds developed throughout the day and there were some showers in some parts of the country. MSD reports that pressure is rising over the southeast coast of the subcontinent.
Tomorrow, Thursday, scattered thundershowers with heavy downpours are expected in Manicaland, Mashonaland, Harare Metropolitan, northern parts of Midlands, and Matabeleland North provinces. The southern parts of the country, including Bulawayo Metropolitan, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, and southern parts of Midlands and Manicaland provinces, will be cloudy, cool, windy, and drizzly. Daytime temperatures will be subdued in these areas.
There is a risk of lightning strikes during this period, even when clouds are distant. Hailstorms and strong winds are also possible.
To stay safe, avoid sheltering under isolated trees or sheds during thunderstorms. Seek shelter inside a home or large building. Even if lightning is seen in the distance, it may not be safe to be outdoors. If you see lightning and can’t count to 30 seconds before hearing thunder, you are not safe from the next lightning strike. Consider installing lightning conductors on buildings.
On Friday morning, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, and southern parts of Midlands and Manicaland provinces will have cloudy conditions with patchy drizzle. The clouds will decrease throughout the day. Other areas will be partly cloudy with a chance of isolated showers, possibly thundery, in the afternoon.

Scattered Thundershowers With Heavy Downpours Expected - MSD

The recent surge in temperatures across Zimbabwe has sparked concerns among health experts regarding the potential risks to public health. With the absence of rain, the consequential depletion of pastures for livestock and the drying of dams, particularly in the southern region, the situation has become increasingly worrisome.
Medical professionals have issued warnings about the possibility of life-threatening illnesses, including heat stroke, due to the extreme temperatures being experienced in many parts of the country. They are urging the public to take precautionary measures, with staying hydrated being of utmost importance. However, it is advised to avoid consuming alcoholic beverages, caffeinated drinks, and sugary beverages as they contribute to dehydration.
Bulawayo City Council health services director, Dr Edwin Sibanda-Mzingwane said the public should avoid direct exposure to sunlight as it may increase dehydration levels. He told <a href="https://herald.co.zw/be-wary-of-heatwave/">The Herald</a>:

People should drink a lot of water to avoid dehydration, which may result in blood pressure-related illnesses. When you are dehydrated it means you will not have enough water in the body, leaving the body largely with salt causing blood pressure.
So, instead of trying to measure the number of litres you drank, just check the colour of your urine.

Another medical health expert, Dr Misheck Ruwende, said the effects of the heat could be mild to severe.

The implications can be as mild as just headaches and I’m sure a lot of people are having headaches due to this weather.
You can have heat rash, heat burn going up heat cramps. You can also experience life-threatening ones for example heat stroke and heat exhaustion. 
So, we encourage people to drink water as much as possible. They should avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks because those types of drinks make us lose water. We have to be as hydrated as possible.
The public should avoid leaving children, the elderly, and pets in the cars because the car can quickly heat up even if the windows can be slightly opened. 
You might have heard of children who died after being left in the car. That is a big problem and it can easily happen and we must never leave the elderly and minors in cars.
The people who are at higher risk and the elderly, people suffering from asthma and heart diseases. Their symptoms can be exacerbated by the heat and they have to stay away from heat as much as they can.

However, they anticipate transitional weather patterns with cooler winds and increased rainfall in the coming days, which should provide some relief from the intense heat.

Health Experts Warn Of Severe Health Complications As Temperatures Surge In Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in collaboration with the Civil Protection Department, has released the evening weather report and forecast for Zimbabwe, valid from Tuesday, November 28, 2023, until Thursday, November 30, 2023.
The morning of this Tuesday was characterised by mostly sunny and mild conditions. However, as the day progressed, it became partly cloudy to cloudy in most parts of the country. Some light thundershowers were experienced in specific provinces, including Matabeleland North, Mashonaland West, and Manicaland.
Moving on to the forecast for Wednesday, November 29, 2023, it is expected to begin with partly cloudy and mild conditions in the morning across most parts of the country. However, as the day progresses, cloud developments are anticipated, leading to scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. These thunderstorms are a result of cloud systems approaching from the northwest.
During this period, the risk of lightning strikes is significantly increased, posing a potential danger to all areas. It is important to note that lightning can strike even when clouds appear distant, a scientific phenomenon known as lightning from the blue. The atmosphere is also conducive to localized hailstorms and strong winds.
To ensure personal safety, there are several actions that individuals should take. If caught outdoors during a thunderstorm, it is advised to avoid seeking shelter under isolated trees or in isolated sheds, as these can act as natural lightning conductors. Instead, it is recommended to seek shelter inside a home or a large building. Even if lightning is observed in the distance, it may not be safe to remain outdoors. The 30-30 Rule serves as a rough guideline to assess safety: if lightning is seen and there are less than 30 seconds between the flash and the sound of thunder, it indicates that the individual is not safe from the next lightning strike. In some places, these thunderstorms may result in isolated heavy rainfall exceeding 30mm. Zimbabwe Weather Report And Forecast Valid From 28-30 November, 2023

Rural households in Zimbabwe are starting to experience the negative effects of El Niño which is expected to drive high needs across Southern Africa through early 2025. El Niño is a natural climate pattern that can bring increased heat and drought to some areas while causing heavy rains in others. Unfortunately, it appears that the weather has not been kind to people living in rural areas, making their lives very difficult.
Many farmers in Zimbabwe rely on the October rains to plant their crops, but the current situation is so severe that even those who work in the fields are not optimistic. This phenomenon, which is not new to Zimbabwe and the region, often leads to delayed and unpredictable rainfall, negatively affecting crops and livestock.
Rudo Mtetwa, a 32-year-old farmer from Chipinge, told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020159/el-nino-zim-communities-sink-deep-in-poverty">NewsDay</a> that it has become challenging to produce anything on their farms due to the effects of climate change. As a result, they are forced to seek work in nearby irrigation farms just to survive, earning only $2 per day. Mtetwa added:

I am no longer able to send my children to school due to lack of funds and I feel that if I get a piece of land in the irrigation scheme, I will be able to take care of my family’s needs. I want to plant tomatoes and other crops but I can’t do that in my own field as a result of El Niño.

Talent Mutamakira, who is also from the same area, is urging the government to provide support to women in remote areas to lessen the effects of El Niño. She is asking for financial assistance to start income-generating projects like poultry farming. Mutamakira is appealing to the government to allocate land to women specifically for irrigation schemes, allowing them to grow horticultural products and earn a livelihood.
According to the 2023 Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee’s assessments, a significant number of people in both urban and rural areas will face food insecurity in the coming years. On 8 November 2018, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS Net) predicted that strong El Nino will drive high needs across Southern Africa through early 2025. 
Zimbabwe is already grappling with the consequences of climate change, such as erratic rainfall patterns, floods, and prolonged droughts. The upcoming El Niño event in 2023-2024 is expected to worsen the situation, leading to aridity and impacting food and animal production. Southern parts of Zimbabwe will be particularly affected. In a post on X seen by Pindula News, Bulawayo Mayor David Colatart said the city will also be affected. He said:

Below average rains are being forecasted for the southern part of Zimbabwe this year including Bulawayo. Our dams are already low so we must prepare for further water shortages. I appeal to all residents to do whatever they can to conserve water in the City. Please would owners of boreholes also be conservative in water usage. The water table is dropping and we must be responsible. Try not to water during the heat of the day – rather water in the early evening or at night so that evaporation is reduced.

These challenges pose a risk to the progress made in reducing malnutrition, especially among children. Zimbabwe has experienced droughts in the past, leading to food deficits and stagnation in rural livelihoods. The COVID-19 pandemic has further complicated the situation. The government aims to mitigate the impact of El Niño through irrigation development and dam construction. The World Food Programme and other organizations are working to strengthen climate-smart agricultural practices and access to water. However, there are concerns about resource misdirection and politicization of food during the El Niño period.

Zimbabwe Starting To Experience Negative Effects Of El Niño

Animals in Zimbabwe are suffering from starvation and dying at a young age due to longer droughts. According to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tinashe_Farawo/">Tinashe Farawo</a>, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS), the animals become stuck in mud as they desperately search for water.
In Gonarezhou National Park, signs of distress can be seen, such as damaged trees from elephants searching for food and water. Farawo has received reports of similar anguish from other national parks, indicating the severity of the situation. <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/longer-droughts-in-zimbabwe-take-a-toll-on-wildlife-cause-more-frequent-clashes-with-people/">NewZimbabwe</a> quotes him as saying:

It’s normal for animals to die, but now they are dying young. They starve, they die. They get stuck in the mud desperately looking for water and they die. It’s heartbreaking.
</blockquote>
According to Farawo, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority is still gathering data, but in Hwange, the country’s biggest park, 15 elephants and 16 buffaloes died in just one week this month. The dry periods are getting longer and harsher. In the past, Zimbabwe’s rainy season was consistent from October to March, but in recent years, it has become unpredictable, sometimes starting as late as December. He added:

Climate change is turning out to be our biggest challenge. Weather patterns have become unpredictable, so animals often have no food and water. Right now we are in November and most of the country still has no rains.

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Tinashe Farawo stated that the drought has intensified conflicts between humans and wildlife in Zimbabwe as they compete for scarce water. He said:

High temperatures, poor forage, water shortages resulted in some deaths of elephants and buffaloes. Since September, 94 elephants have died in the Hwange Matetsi block. There is nothing to write home about considering the population of elephants in Hwange. There has been an increase of human-elephant conflicts in communities as animals compete for water with communities. We have recorded some cases where elephants are chasing away cattle from the water points.

Climate change is having severe impacts on Zimbabwe’s national parks and wildlife. Studies show that extreme weather events, longer dry spells, and hotter temperatures are causing the loss of plants and animals.
The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has installed solar-powered boreholes to provide water for animals, but with surface water drying up, animals are forced to travel long distances in search of food and water. The Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area allows animals to migrate freely across multiple countries.
Elephants are particularly affected, facing bacterial infections and resource depletion due to overpopulation. Birds also suffer as their breeding cycles are disrupted by the consumption of trees by herbivores. Human-animal conflicts are on the rise, with communities struggling to put food on the table and animals encroaching on settlements.

Part of Dubai has for the first time in history gone underwater after the city experienced heavy rains and thunderstorms, leading to flooded streets.
People were advised to avoid flood-prone areas, including beaches, according to <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/trending/news/part-of-dubai-goes-underwater-for-first-time-as-uae-reels-from-heavy-rains-thunderstorm-viral-videos-trending-news-latest-updates-2023-11-23-904029">IndiaTv</a>. Videos circulated on social media showing waterlogged roads and a man rowing a boat on a flooded road. Dubai police worked to manage traffic during the extreme weather. The heavy downpour was caused by convective clouds and cloud seeding, according to the UAE’s weather agency. Said Dr Abdul Habib, a weather expert from the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) of UAE:

We expected this rainfall of different intensity especially in the northern and eastern parts of the county that day due to convective cloud formation over the sea moving gradually towards coastal areas, starting from Dubai to Sharjah, Ajman and so on.

On November 18th, Expo City Dubai experienced the highest recorded rainfall of 65.88 mm. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) stated that the weather on Thursday will be partly cloudy with the possibility of low clouds appearing over certain coastal and western areas. Part Of Dubai Goes Underwater As Streets Flood

The northern and western parts of the country are expected to have cloudy conditions with a chance of isolated light showers this Monday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has said in its latest weather report and forecast.
The MSD said on Sunday, mostly sunny conditions were experienced throughout the country with mild morning conditions becoming hot in the afternoon.
This Monday, it is expected to be cloudy in some parts of the country, with thundery showers forecasted. Said the MSD:

The northern and western parts of the country (Manicaland, All Mashonaland Provinces, Midlands, Bulawayo and Masvingo Provinces) are expected to have cloudy conditions with a chance of isolated light showers which may be thundery in places. It should be mild at first becoming warm by the afternoon in these areas.
Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South and some parts of Masvingo Provinces should be mostly sunny with warm to hot daytime conditions however there are slight chances of isolated thundershowers later in the afternoon.

The Met Department has warned members of the public that lightning remains a threat in all areas.
Hot daytime temperatures may result in dehydration and heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat rash.
On Tuesday, 21 November, the bulk of the country should be mostly cloudy with chances of scattered afternoon light but thundery showers, except for Matabeleland South and Masvingo provinces which are anticipated to be partly cloudy and hot, said the MSD.

The forecast for tomorrow, Sunday 19 November 2023, predicts that Matabeleland South, Masvingo, and the southern parts of Manicaland provinces may have brief cloudiness in the morning with mild conditions. However, the skies are expected to clear up in the afternoon, and warm to hot temperatures can be anticipated. As for the rest of the country, it should be mostly sunny and hot throughout the afternoon.
When it’s very hot during the day, it’s important to stay hydrated and cool. If you don’t drink enough water and get too hot, you can become dehydrated and may experience heat-related illnesses like heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or heat rash. Hot weather conditions can also result in soil drying out quickly and plants requiring more water to survive.
Recommendations:
1. Sun Protection: If you are working outdoors in the sun, it is essential to protect yourself from excessive heat and harmful UV rays. Wear a sun hat, use sunscreen, and cover your skin as much as possible to avoid sunburn and heat-related illnesses.
2. Hydration: Stay well-hydrated, especially during hot and sunny weather. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration and ensure optimal plant growth.
3. Water Harvesting: Take advantage of any opportunity for water harvesting. Collect rainwater or explore other means of water collection to ensure you have sufficient water for your crops and plants during periods of low rainfall or drought.
4. Stay Indoors during Thunderstorms: When thunderstorms occur, it is best to seek shelter indoors. Lightning can pose a significant risk to both farmers and crops. Avoid working in the fields during thunderstorms to ensure your safety.
5. Early Planting and Irrigation: If you have access to irrigation methods, consider early planting. However, it is crucial to consult with your local Agritex Officer for specific advice on the best planting practices and irrigation techniques suitable for your area.
Weather Outlook:
On Monday, a weak cloud band is expected to bring cloudy conditions and the possibility of light showers, potentially thundery, in some areas. Matabeleland North, All Mashonaland provinces, and the Midlands provinces should prepare for mild to warm temperatures. In contrast, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, and Manicaland provinces can expect mostly sunny weather with warm to hot temperatures.

Zimbabwe Weather Outlook And Tips For Farmers

The ongoing El Niño event is expected to last at least until April 2024, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said in a new update.
The WMO said the weather event is expected to influence weather patterns and contribute to a further rise in temperatures both on land and in the ocean. <a href="https://public.wmo.int/en/media/press-release/el-ni%C3%B1o-expected-last-least-until-april-2024">WMO said in a statement</a>:
<blockquote>
As of mid-October 2023, sea surface temperatures and other atmospheric and oceanic indicators in the central-eastern tropical Pacific are consistent with El Niño, the warm phase of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
The El Niño developed rapidly during July-August and reached moderate strength by September 2023 and is likely to peak as a strong event in November – January 2024.
There is a 90% likelihood it will persist throughout the upcoming northern hemisphere winter/southern hemisphere summer.
</blockquote>
El Niño occurs on average every two to seven years and typically lasts nine to 12 months and is a naturally occurring climate pattern associated with the warming of the ocean surface in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
The WMO report further states that most recent forecasts and expert assessments suggest a high likelihood of continued warming in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific for at least the next four overlapping 3-month seasons: November-January, December-February, January-March, and February-April 2024.
WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas noted that human activities contribute to rising temperatures associated with El Niño. He said:

El Niño impacts on global temperature typically play out in the year after its development, in this case in 2024.
But as a result of record-high land and sea-surface temperatures since June, the year 2023 is now on track to be the warmest year on record.

El Niño Expected To Last At Least Until April 2024

The Southern Africa Regional Climate Outlook Forum predicts that Southern Africa will experience at least 13 cyclones this season, higher than the average of nine per season.
The Government of Zimbabwe has allocated ZWL$37 billion for disaster response and management, as the country is expected to be hit by two tropical cyclones during the rainy season. The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) estimates that around 250,000 people are at risk of being affected by adverse weather conditions, including cyclones, floods, landslides, and hailstorms.
Harsh weather conditions have already caused severe damage, affecting 5,000 people, killing 13 people and injuring 16 this year. In the previous year, Southern Africa experienced 11 cyclones, including one that caused significant destruction and displaced over 100,000 people in Mozambique, Malawi, and Madagascar. Responding to questions from <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/two-cyclones-forecast-250-000-at-risk-experts">The Sunday Mail</a>, the DCP said:

MSD Warns Of Thunderstorms, Violent Winds And Lightning

The greater part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region is likely to receive normal to below-normal rainfall for most of the period October to December (OND) 2023.
However, the north-western part of Angola, much of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the southern half of Tanzania, north-eastern Zambia, northern Malawi, northern Mozambique, Comoros, eastern Madagascar, and Mauritius are expected to receive normal to above-normal rains.
The northern half of Tanzania and Seychelles are likely to receive above-normal rainfall during this period of the 2023/24 season.
This came out of the 27th Southern Africa Regional Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-27) held at Ocean Creek, Mauritius from the 26th to 27th of September 2023.
SARCOF-27 also said the period December, January and February (DJF) 2023/24) is expected to have normal to above normal rainfall for most of the region.
However, the south-western fringes of Namibia, south-western South Africa, the southern part of Zimbabwe, the eastern half of Botswana, northern South Africa, Eswatini and southern Mozambique are expected to receive normal to below-normal rains.
Southernmost Madagascar is projected to receive below-normal rainfall during this period of the 2023/24 season.
Meanwhile, Seychelles is likely to receive above-normal rainfall during this period of the 2023/24 season, according to the report.

DOWNLOAD: Final 2023/24 Seasonal Weather Forecast For SADC Region

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecasted isolated lightning trikes and light showers, drizzle, and moderate winds in some parts of the country from Tuesday, 26 September to Friday, 29 September 2023.
In a weather advisory issued on Monday, 25 September in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection, the Met Department said Matabeleland South, Matabeleland North, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Masvingo and Manicaland provinces and southern districts of Midlands Province will experience lightning strikes and thunder in the coming days.
The MSD has advised members of the public to stay indoors when thunder roars to be safe from lightning strikes. It said:

When thunder roars, it is best to be indoors, do not seek shelter under trees or near polls or pylons. Try to find an earthed building [most council-approved houses and buildings are less affected by lightning due to the earthwire that runs through them]. If unable to find shelter, crouch as low as possible and as far as possible from livestock.

Zimbabwe is likely to receive less than average rainfall leading to a drought in the 2023/24 cropping season due to the El Niño climate phenomenon.

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in July this year declared the start of El Niño.
WMO estimated there is a 90 percent probability of the El Niño event persisting through the second half of the year and it is expected to be “at least moderate strength”.
According to the UN weather agency, El Niño occurs on average every two to seven years in episodes lasting nine to 12 months.
Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Madagascar are listed among countries in Southern Africa as highly exposed nations to El Niño.
According to ACAPS, a non-profit, non-governmental project that provides international, independent humanitarian analysis:
