Wolverhampton Wanderers, an English Premier League team, has signed 19-year-old Zimbabwean midfielder Tawanda Chirewa from Ipswich Town, a Championship club.
Chirewa will initially play for Wolverhampton’s Under 21s during the 2023/24 season. He made his senior debut for Ipswich in November 2019, becoming the second-youngest player in the team’s history. He signed a two-year scholarship at Ipswich in July 2020 and was subsequently granted his first professional contract four months later.
Jon Hunter-Barrett, the football academy manager, expressed his satisfaction with the signing of Tawanda Chirewa by Wolverhampton Wanderers. He said Chirewa has been on their radar since he was 16, and the club closely monitored his progress before seizing the right opportunity to approach him and secure his services. He added:

Harry Hooman, the head of UK academy recruitment, emphasized that Tawanda Chirewa has been a player of interest for Wolverhampton Wanderers for a significant period. They began monitoring him when he was an under-16 player and have continued to closely observe his progress in the subsequent seasons. Hooman said:

He is an athletic, talented player with the ability to score and create goals. He wants to get on the ball and is not afraid to take responsibility and take risks to make things happen.

There is a significant number of players, particularly in the Premier League in England, who have Zimbabwean ancestry. Football supporters believe that if these players were called up for international duty, the Zimbabwean national team, the Warriors, would become much stronger. Some players residing abroad have previously responded to the call and represented Zimbabwe, while others have decided to change their nationalities due to concerns about the management of Zimbabwean football by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).

Wolves Have Signed 19-Year-Old Zimbabwean Midfielder Tawanda Chirewa

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Normalisation Committee has assigned veteran former Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambga and Sheasham coach Lizwe Sweswe to take charge of a Warriors squad of locally-based players for Monday, 04 September’s match against Namibia.
The friendly match will be one of several activities lined up for President-Elect Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration at the National Sports Stadium.
Twenty locally-based players have been selected to be in the Warriors squad to face the Brave Warriors.

Warriors Squad For Mnangagwa Inauguration Match Revealed

Highlanders coach Baltemar Brito has revealed that he is interested in the Warriors job after the FIFA Normalisation Committee led by Lincoln Mutasa recently released adverts for jobs for national teams.
The Brazilian said he has four months left on his contract with Highlanders and the two parties have not started negotiations for a contract renewal. Said Brito:

As coaches, we have to think about our future so our manager applied for the Warriors job.
Highlanders is the biggest team in the country but the biggest job is coaching the national team.

Highlanders are at the apex of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League with a five-point lead ahead of second-placed Ngezi Platinum Stars after 19 matches.
Manica Diamonds are third, with 35 points, Dynamos are fourth with 32 points, and Chicken Inn are fifth on the log standings with 31 points.

Highlanders Coach Baltemar Brito Interested In Warriors Job

Former Warriors coach Norman Mapeza says the issue of stadiums needs to be addressed before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026 African Qualifiers to ensure that the Warriors play their home matches at home.
The FC Platinum coach, who was the last national team coach before FIFA suspended Zimbabwe from international football in early 2022, when he took to the Warriors to the 2021 AFCON finals in Cameroon, said the country’s stadium crisis worries him.
Speaking ahead of his side’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League game against Yadah at Mandava Stadium on Saturday, <a href="https://www.soccer24.co.zw/2023/07/14/the-stadia-issue-needs-to-be-fixed-first/">Mapeza said</a>:

I’m still worried if you look at our stadiums issue at the moment. I understand the games will be played in November.
I was reading the paper today (yesterday) and our Minister of Sport (Kirsty Coventry) said maybe within the next three or four weeks, the National Sports Stadium will be done.
So it means maybe the bucket seats will be there because it will be unfortunate for us to get the reprieve but we end up relocating to South Africa to play our World Cup qualifiers there.
People want to watch football, look at the support the cricket team was getting. We also need that type of support in our football.
The stadia issue needs to be fixed first then maybe we can start saying: “We are back in it now.”
But for the time being, it’s still a 50-50 situation. We are in, but where are we going to play the football?
But apart from that, I think everybody is happy, we are all excited that we have been given the reprieve and we just hope everything goes well for us.

Zimbabwe were placed in Group C in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers in the draw held in the Ivory Coast on Thursday.
The group also has Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Rwanda and Lesotho.
The group winners will automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States and Mexico.

Stadia Crisis Worries Mapeza As Warriors Discover 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Opponents

Zimbabwe have been put in Group C of the FIFA World Cup 2026 African Qualifiers alongside Nigeria, South Africa, Benin, Rwanda and Lesotho.
Nine group winners qualify for World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
The best four group runners-up enter play-offs and winners qualify for an inter-confederation tournament.
Responding to the draw, football analyst Steve Vickers said the Warriors will face strong opponents in Nigeria and South Africa. <a href="https://twitter.com/SteveVickers5/status/1679531970030600193?s=20">He tweeted</a>:

Controversial Harare-based preacher, Walter Magaya, has pledged to continue financially supporting the Zimbabwe Warriors for them to play at the World Cup finals.
<a href="https://nehandaradio.com/2023/07/12/im-ready-to-sponsor-warriors-i-want-them-to-qualify-for-world-cup-magaya/">Nehanda Radio</a> on Thursday reported that Magaya, who is the founder and leader of megachurch Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries (PHD), has refused to give up on his dream to see the Warriors play at the World Cup finals. Said Magaya:

Zimbabwe will play at the World Cup one day. It’s only a matter of time. As long I’m alive, I will continue supporting the team in any way to ensure this dream is fulfilled.
We have a lot of talent in this country, so why not qualify for the World Cup? I will not cease to support the national team to achieve such a remarkable feat.

Magaya, who owns Premiership club Yadah Stars Football Club, has in the past bailed the financially struggling ZIFA out.
The cleric said he stopped giving financial support to the Warriors when the former ZIFA president Felton Kamambo took over the reins from Philip Chiyangwa. Magaya said:

I stopped helping the Warriors for reasons beyond my control. But now that we have been re-admitted by FIFA, if the new leadership in control of things at ZIFA wants me to continue assisting the team where possible, I’m ready.

Zimbabwe were included in the FIFA World Cup 2026 African qualifiers and are set to learn their opponents on Thursday.

Walter Magaya Pledges To Bankroll Warriors To Qualify For World Cup Finals

Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry has said authorities are working to ensure that the Warriors will play their matches in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers at home.
This comes after FIFA lifted its suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), a development that allows Zimbabwe’s national football teams to compete in international tournaments.
Responding to questions during a Press conference where FIFA confirmed the lifting of the ZIFA suspension and unveiled the normalisation committee, Coventry said:

We have had good open conversations with FIFA. We will continue having conversations (about the National Sports Stadium).
The guarantees of what has been happening which has not been made public will go to FIFA through the SRC [Sports and Recreation Commission] and we remain fully committed to doing that seeing and ensuring that we are playing our games at home.
There has been ongoing work. The electronic ticketing system is now in the country waiting to be installed.
Water reticulation is in process and the feasibility study for the entire area, not just the NSS, but the grounds around it are being undertaken at the moment. It should be wrapped up in the next two to three weeks.
This has also been explained to FIFA when they visited and they also went and visited the National Sports Stadium of which they were under the impression that is crumbling to the ground, but they that it was not the case.
The feasibility study is being undertaken by a South African legitimate company that built and renovated soccer stadiums for the 2010 World Cup.
And in the next three weeks, we will have more of an update on for you on where that feasibility study will see us.

All of Zimbabwe’s stadiums were banned from hosting international matches three years ago after they failed to meet the minimum standards required by CAF and FIFA.
The Warriors enter the FIFA World Cup 2026 African Qualifiers draw, which will be conducted on Thursday evening in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Zimbabwe are in Pot 4 of the 54-team draw along with Mozambique, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Togo, Tanzania, Central African Republic, Malawi and Libya.
There are six pots for the draw.

Authorities Working To Ensure Warriors Play At Home - Minister Coventry

Former Warriors captain Willard Katsande said that his main ambition is to coach the Zimbabwe national team.
Katsande, who is working as a brand ambassador for a South African club, Sekhukhune United, has now completed a CAF D licence conducted in Tshwane.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.snl24.com/kickoff/sanews/premiership/kaizer-chiefs/decorated-kaizer-chiefs-midfielder-willard-katsande-reveals-a-new-career-path-since-retirement-20221130">KickOff</a>, Katsande said he “owes” football and wants to share the knowledge he has acquired with the next generation. He said:

I did my CAF D licence in order for me to set the path of my growth since I know what I want.
I owe football because to get to be where I am today is through football, so I owe football.
This is now my time to share my knowledge with the next generation so that they come out better than us.
We tried our level best, but it wasn’t good enough for us to conquer African football.
I have dreams of moving into coaching because I have the passion and one day, I want to be the head coach of one of the PSL teams.
My main objective is to coach the Zimbabwe national team.
So, this is what drives me to be where I am today.
Football is about learning every day so I’m learning as each day passes and I hope one day I will reach my target and hope I will be working with people that can add value to my coaching path.

Willard Katsande Says He Wants To Coach Warriors

Zimbabwe Warriors defender, Divine Lunga scored for Lamontville Golden Arrows to secure a point against Cape Town City in the DSTV Premiership on Tuesday evening.
Lunga struck six minutes before full-time to force a 1-1 draw after Kajally Drammeh had given the Citizens the lead in the 27th minute.
Fellow Zimbabwean Knox Mutizwa was not part of the Arrows line-up on the day.
Lunga is on loan at Arrows from Mamelodi Sundowns after he struggled for game time at the Brazilians.
The 27-year-old former Chicken Inn utility player joined Sundowns last season from Golden Arrows but struggled for game time as he only managed to make nine league appearances in the last league campaign leading to his loan move to Abafana Bes’thende.
Lunga previously played for Arrows from 2018 when he left Zimbabwean club Chicken Inn up to the beginning of last season when he joined Mamelodi Sundowns in July 2021.
He signed a three-year deal for the Brazilians and made 12 appearances playing nine DStv Premiership matches, featured two times in the Nedbank Cup and once in the MTN8 Cup.
The Bulawayo-born left-back never kicked a ball for Downs in the CAF champions league last season.

Warriors Defender Divine Lunga Scores A Crucial Goal For Golden Arrows

Zimbabwe <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Football_Team">Warriors</a>, who were recently barred from participating in the 2023 AFCON qualifying tournament, were this week disqualified from the upcoming CHAN qualifiers where they had been drawn to face Malawi. 
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had included them in both qualifiers on the condition that they get the FIFA suspension lifted two weeks before the opening matches. 
The first round, first leg matches of the CHAN qualifiers have been scheduled to be held between July 22 and 24. 
However, responsible authorities have indicated that the local football administration needed greater attention and they have since embarked on a restructuring process fronted by the Sports and Recreation Commission. 
CAF on Tuesday confirmed that the Flames of Malawi were through to the second round of the 2022 CHAN qualifiers without kicking a ball following Zimbabwe’s decision. The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) received a letter from CAF confirming the development. Read the letter from CAF to FAM:

We are referring to the suspension of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Football_Association_(ZIFA)">Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)</a> by FIFA Congress from all football activities. 
Unfortunately, the association of Zimbabwe did not fulfil the criteria set by FIFA Congress and is still under suspension. 
Therefore, we hereby confirm to you that the clause indicated in the draw procedures is applied: In case the suspension of Zimbabwe FA is not lifted 2 weeks before its first match, it will be considered loser and eliminated from the competition. 
Consequently, all the matches of Zimbabwe in the frame of the 1st round of the qualifiers of CHAN 2022 are now cancelled and consequently Malawi is qualified to the 2nd round of the qualifiers.

The Flames will now wait for the winner between Zambia and Mozambique in the second round of the CHAN qualifiers. 
This is the third time in two months that Zimbabwe has been disqualified from international competition due to the FIFA suspension. 
The Warriors, who last competed at the delayed 2021 AFCON finals held in Cameroon in February this year, have been sidelined from the 2023 AFCON qualifiers and the COSAFA Cup, which is currently taking place in South Africa. 
Interim ZIFA president, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gift_Banda">Gift Banda</a> told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/warriors-kicked-out-of-chan/">The Herald</a> that the nation should not be worried about missing these tournaments since long-term solutions are being worked out to solve the crisis in Zimbabwean football. He added that ZIFA has since started communicating with FIFA with hopes for a reinstatement.

Zimbabwe Warriors Disqualified From CHAN Qualifiers

Interim ZIFA president Gift Banda said the next board meeting will deliberate on the appointment of a substantive coach for the Warriors.
Banda told The Herald that the Warriors coach should be local, arguing that foreign coaches are not always the best candidates for the job. Said, Banda:

We will sit down with my fellow board members and deliberate on it in our next board meeting so that we have a substantive coach.
If you ask for my preference, I would prefer a local coach because it’s high time we gave our own coaches the chance to lead our teams because it’s not everything that is foreign that is good for us.

The Warriors currently do not have a substantive coach following the expiry of Norman Mapeza’s contract.

Interim ZIFA President Says He Prefers Local Coach For Warriors

Zimbabwe will not take part in the 2022 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup tournament set to be held in Durban, South Africa, next month.
COSAFA has announced that only Zimbabwe will not participate in the regional tournament due to their ongoing FIFA suspension. COSAFA said:

The regional championship will be contested for the 21st time having made its debut in 1997 and will this year feature 13 of the 14 COSAFA nations. Only Zimbabwe will be missing due to their ongoing FIFA suspension.

The draw is set to be held at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 14 June.
The tournament runs from 5-17 July and will again feature last year’s losing finalists Senegal as the guest nation.
CAF recently kicked Zimbabwe out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers because of the country’s suspension from international football by FIFA.

Warriors Out Of 2022 COSAFA Cup Tournament

Wigan Athletic captain Tendayi Darikwa snubbed the latest Warriors call up, leading to speculation he might follow the footsteps of his compatriots Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona in quitting international football.
Darikwa last played for Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifier against Ghana in Cape Coast in September 2021.
He was reportedly called to play in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers before it was confirmed Zimbabwe would not take part, and he turned down the invitation.
Speaking to Soccer24, National Teams General Manager Wellington Mpandare said Darikwa was not happy with the suspended Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA board. Said Mpandare:

It will take a lot of convincing to have him back. Tendayi was never happy with the ZIFA board because of false promises before and during the Egypt AFCON tournament.

Zimbabwe has been placed in Group K alongside COSAFA rivals South Africa, North African giants Morocco and West African nation Liberia.
The first two qualifying matchdays are scheduled between 30 May and 14 June 2022.
The winners and runners up of each group will automatically qualify for the finals in June next year.
AFCON 2023 hosts Ivory Coast will participate in the qualifiers, but as the hosts of the tournament, are guaranteed a spot in the finals.
Zimbabwe and Kenya, who are both banned from international football, were drawn for the qualifiers.
However, the two nations will only participate in the competition if they meet FIFA’s demands two weeks before the games begin.
Should the two countries fail to have the suspensions lifted, the groups they are placed in will shrink from four nations to three.
However, the top two finishers will still qualify for the finals.

Zimbabwe Drawn In Tough Group For 2023 AFCON Qualifiers

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) says it is proud of the Warriors’ performances in the ongoing FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers despite losing three matches in a row and only managing one point from four matches.
In a statement, the football governing body said it is wrong to accuse the players of lack of a commitment to national duty, saying “their commitment was clear to us to see.”
This comes after some players allegedly suffered abuse on social media following their back-to-back defeats to Ghana earlier this week, a 3-1 defeat in Cape Coast on Friday and a 1-0 loss in Harare on Tuesday. Said ZIFA:

To suggest that the team was not committed is grossly unfair to these dedicated group who aspired to do well for their beloved nation.
We are proud, therefore, of the Warriors’ performances despite the lack of positive results.

Mapeza replaced Zdravko Logarušic, who had managed one point from two matches, with the former Warriors captain given the mandate to revive the World Cup campaign.
However, the Warriors have no chance of qualifying for the next round of qualifiers after amassing a single point from a possible twelve and trailing group G  leaders South Africa by 9 points with two matches remaining.

ZIFA Proud Of Warriors' Commitment And Performances

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has turned down a request by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) to allow 5 000 supporters into the National Sports Stadium to watch a World Cup match between Zimbabwe and Ghana next month. In turning the request down, CAF cited the absence of bucket seats and electronic controls among others. The Confederation of African Football has once again turned down our request to allow a limited number of supporters into the stadium for our FIFA World Cup 2022TM qualifier against Ghana. CAF indicated that its decision was based on the review of Zimbabwe’s compliance to expected stadium requirements, safety &amp; security as well as medical issues at the National Sports Stadium. 
National Sports Stadium is currently hosting senior men’s international games on a temporary approval, having been deemed unfit in March 2020. Reasons for the ban include the absence of bucket seats and electronic access controls, among other issues. While FIFA COVID-19 match protocols dearly state that all matches during the pandemic must be played behind closed doors, special exemptions to allow spectators into the stadium have been granted to nations with facilities that satisfy required standards. 
The Zimbabwe Football Association appeals to government to accelerate renovations at the stadium so that football stakeholders can .11y benefit from the massive commercial, social Sr entertainment potential of the game.

CAF Turns Down ZIFA Request To Allow Supporters Into NSS For Zim-Ghana Match

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has written to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) seeking permission to have at least 5 000 fans allowed into the National Sports Stadium (NSS) next month when Zimbabwe hosts Ghana in a World Cup qualifier match.
Earlier this month, CAF turned down a similar bid by ZIFA to have 10 000 fans watch the Zimbabwe vs South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the National Sports Stadium on September 3.
CAF argued that medical, stadium requirements compliance, and safety and security perspectives at the NSS did not meet the minimum requirements.
This time around, Zifa spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela said they made an application to Caf which was accompanied by a government supporting letter. He said:

We have made an application to Caf to have 5 000 fans allowed for the Ghana match. We are waiting for a response from Caf. In our application, we attached a government supporting letter.

The NSS got a waiver to host international matches without meeting all the prerequisites, probably on the condition that the World Cup qualifiers would be played behind closed doors.
The stadium still has a number of outstanding issues that include the installation of bucket seats, refurbishment of a venue operations centre, improvement of the pitch itself, renovation of the B-Arena for training, electronic entrances to the stadium and general cleanliness of the facility.
In May, CAF okayed the NSS for the World Cup qualifiers and earlier in April, the stadium was okayed to host the Africa Cup of Nation (Afcon) matches while Zifa were fined US$2 000 for the deplorable state of the facility.

ZIFA Applies To Have 5 000 Fans Watch Zimbabwe Vs Ghana At NSS

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is in a difficult situation in coming up with a replacement for Warriors coach Zdravko Logarušic in the event they decide to fire him as is expected.
Reports suggest that the Croat is set to be sacked when the ZIFA board meets on Saturday to review the Warriors’ performance against South Africa (nil-all draw) and Ethiopia (0-1 defeat), respectively.
Logarusic won a single match in his 14 games at the helm of the senior men’s team and fans are baying for his blood.
There have been suggestions that ZIFA will get rid of Logarušic and replace him with a local coach, but the pool to choose from is quite limited.
FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza would have been a natural replacement for Logarušic, but his club, which is participating in the CAF Champions League, is likely to block the move.
Hiring Mapeza is also complicated by the fact that ZIFA owes him money from previous stints as national team coach and he would likely demand his dues first before committing to a new arrangement.
ZIFA are currently broke after they squandered all the money received from FIFA and CAF over the course of the year.
Former Warriors interim coach Joey Antipas, who presided over the Warriors’ first two matches in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and picked four points, does not hold the required qualifications.
A short term solution would be the appointment of either Tonderai Ndiraya or Lloyd Chitembwe who are both assistants to Logarušic.
There are some board members though who are defending Logarusic arguing that it would be hard to replace him.
They also contend that Logarušic has been unlucky in the campaign, especially with the blocking of United Kingdom-based players from travelling to Zimbabwe for the matches due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

ZIFA Announces Adjusted Warriors Squad To Face SA

The Warriors technical team was forced to make wholesale changes to their squad after 10 players, included in the initial call-up, withdrew from the squad, for various reasons.
Warriors’ team manager, Wellington Mpandare, yesterday said they have roped in Knox Mutizwa, Edwin Madhananga and Ishmael Wadi, who recently moved to Division One side JDR Stars.
He also revealed that they have also called up Kelvin Moyo from Zambia, and three local players, including Godknows Murwira (Dynamos) and the FC Platinum duo of Silas Songani and William Stima, to make a 26-man squad. Said Mpandare:

It’s certainly a big setback we couldn’t get our foreign-based players but we, obviously, will look to work with what we have at our disposal.
Some new players have been called in and camp will begin tomorrow (today) as scheduled.

Zimbabwe dropped some of their key players like Marvelous Nakamba, who plays for English Premiership side Aston Villa, Tendayi Darikwa (Wigan) and Jordan Zemura of AFC Bournemouth.
United States-based defender Teenage Hadebe was also not able to report for duty, after his club Houston Dynamo, could not clear him for the upcoming assignments.
The Warriors host South Africa at the National Sports Stadium on Friday, before leaving for Ethiopia, where they face the Walya Antelopes, four days later.

We Will Work With What We Have, Says Warriors Manager

Warriors team manager Wellington Mpandare says they have a fallback plan if foreign-based players are unavailable for their World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Ethiopia early next month.
This comes after English Premier League and English Football League clubs announced that they will not release players for international duty during the September window.
The clubs cited travel restrictions imposed by the British government on red-listed countries that required travellers to quarantine for 10 days on return to the United Kingdom, meaning that players would miss up to three domestic matches.
Zimbabwe could be without Aston Villa’s Marvelous Nakamba, Jordan Zemura (AFC Bournemouth), Tendayi Darikwa (Wigan Athletic), Brendan Galloway, David Moyo (Hamilton Academical), as well as striker Admiral Muskwe since the country is on the UK’s COVID-19 “red list”.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Wednesday wrote to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asking him to intervene.
Mpandare expressed hope that the involvement of Infantino would make English clubs reconsider their decision. He said:

Honestly, FIFA would love to have the top players playing in the competition, which is the whole purpose of it being called the World Cup.

We Have A Plan B, Says Warriors Manager

The Warriors technical team has announced the squad for the next World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Ethiopia.
Zimbabwe will face Bafana Bafana on 3 September at the National Sports Stadium in Harare before travelling to Addis Ababa for the second Group G match on the 7th of the month.
The campaign will mark the national team’s return to the competition after a FIFA ban saw them miss the 2018 edition.
The squad includes several England-based stars including Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba, Luton Town forward Admiral Muskwe, Ipswich Town striker Macauley Bonne, Bournemouth defender Jordan Zemura and Wigan Athletic captain Tendayi Darikwa.
However, the availability of these England-based stars is still uncertain after English clubs unanimously resolved not to release the players in the September window due to the coronavirus travel restrictions.
Zimbabwe is listed as among the riskiest countries and any travelling from there will be required to stay in quarantine for ten days and this will force the players to miss a couple of games.

Warriors Squad For World Cup Qualifiers Announced

Warriors coach Zdravko Logarusic has dropped locally-based players from his Warriors squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers next month.
The Croat had wanted to infuse some of the fringe players who did duty at the recent COSAFA Cup tournament in South Africa, into the main Warriors squad.
However, due to the inactivity of the local league due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the Warriors squad will now be composed of foreign-based players only.
The Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League was suspended in June following a surge in coronavirus cases across the country.
Speaking to NewsDay on Thursday, national teams general manager Wellington Mupandare said:

Logarušic, who is back in his native country to sort out some personal issues, is expected to name the squad next week.

Logarusic Overlooks Local Players For World Cup Qualifiers

Beleaguered Warriors coach Zdravko Logarusic has survived for now after the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) board failed to meet last weekend to deliberate on his fate.
The ZIFA board was expected to meet last weekend to deliberate on recommendations made by its technical development committee on Logarusic and his technical staff at the COSAFA Cup in South Africa last month.
ZIFA communications and competitions manager Xolisani Gwesela on Tuesday told State media that there was nothing to report on the Warriors’ technical team, as the board did not meet. Said Gwesela:

They will meet, and once they do, you’ll be briefed on what they deliberated on.

The Warriors returned from the COSAFA Cup tournament without a win and even failed to go beyond the group stage.
Since he was appointed Warriors coach, Logarusic has only managed one win from 12 games, with four draws and seven defeats.
With under a month left before their 2022 World Cup qualifier against South Africa, the Warriors are likely to be under Logarusic for the match. The match may give the Croat a lifeline to redeem himself.

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) goalkeeper Washington Arubi hopes his performances in the 2020/21 DStv Premier Soccer League season will earn him a Warriors call-up.
Arubi (35), was named the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament and pocketed R150 000 on Sunday night after keeping four clean sheets in five games en route to lifting the coveted trophy.
The former Warriors goalkeeper was also named Nedbank Cup Goalkeeper of the Tournament after leading his TTM to the Nedbank Cup title following a 1-0 win over Chippa United in the final last month. Said Arubi:

Arubi said he feels extra motivated now following a difficult time in South Africa when he had to ply his trade in the second tier at one point. He said:

Arubi last played for the senior national team on 8 September 2015, in an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea at the National Sports Stadium where he made a terrible howler.
He was replaced by former Dynamos goalkeeper Tatenda M’kuruva in the next match, and that marked the end of his romance with the Warriors.

Warriors coach Zdravko ‘Loga’ Logarušić said he has blocked the European-based stars on WhatsApp who ignored his international call-ups before qualifying for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Logarusic said since Zimbabwe secured a place at the 2021 AFCON finals, some of the players based abroad have been trying to reach out to him through the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).
The 59-year-old Croat asserted that he will not allow players to choose the games they want to play in. Said Loga:
<blockquote>The first time when I called up (international) players they ignored us, now it’s a different story (since qualifying for Afcon) but now my number is blocked.
We will see how things go but we can’t afford someone to play a game and choose when he wants to play next or simply ignore us (Zifa).
I could not allow this, I must respect the country that gave me a job and nobody can play with this country and choose games.
When I called those players in Europe, most of them ignored me, not each time they are calling and they can’t reach me — but they are giving information (to Zifa) saying they can’t reach the coach.</blockquote>
Loga went on to reveal that several players in the top two tiers of English football have reached out about the possibility of representing Zimbabwe.

Logarušić Blocks Warriors Stars On WhatsApp

Warriors hopeful Tivonge Rushesha has been named the Swansea City U-23 Player-of-the-Season.
The 18-year-old Zimbabwean-born starlet is a product of Swansea’s academy and had his breakthrough in the 2019/20 campaign where he also made his senior debut against Cambridge United last August.
Rushesha trained with the senior squad prominently last season and went on to make six matchday squad appearances across all competitions to add to the thirteen games he played for the U23s team.
The young defender was born in Zimbabwe and moved to the United Kingdom in 2003. He has represented Wales at U-17 level but he still can represent Zimbabwe at senior level.
Rushesha received a call-up for the Warriors’ AFCON qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia but couldn’t come because his Zimbabwean passport had expired.

The development was announced by Zifa’s acting vice-president, Phillemon Machana who indicated that according to the deal, FIFA shall market Zimbabwe’s World Cup matches across the world. Machana said:
<blockquote>We have engaged Fifa to market our World Cup matches across the world. All we do is to feed them with the matches the Warriors will be playing and they market the games on our behalf to the international football community and that is the only way we identified as a key strategy that can help us as an association to generate a lot of revenue through broadcasting rights.</blockquote>
The deal is also a positive move for Zimbabwean players who will be put on the spotlight. The deal shall also boost the bankrupt ZIFA’s financial standing.
ZIFA has in the past experienced financial problems that affected a number of national football teams’ campaigns including the Warriors Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers in Egypt.

ZIFA, FIFA In Revenue-Generating Deal

Newly-appointed Warriors coach <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zdravko_Logarusic" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zdravko Logarusic</a> is unfazed with the prospect of playing home matches away from home following the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to ban local stadiums from hosting international matches.
Logarusic, however, admitted that the ideal scenario was for the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Football_Team" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Warriors</a> to play before their fans, but is ready to play anywhere. He said:
<blockquote>Hosting Algeria away from home will be difficult for us. Playing before our supporters always make life difficult for the opponents and easier for us but we are Warriors, we have to be in the war and win it anywhere.
It won’t be easy but our nickname, the Warriors, means we cannot give up easily. Whether we play in Zimbabwe, South Africa or Zambia, we are ready for war. We are not intimidated but truly speaking, we would have loved to play our game in front of our own fans who can intimidate the opponents.
This is why it is called home advantage. But, we are dealing with what is on the ground. We have to play football and win anywhere.</blockquote>
CAF last week announced that it has barred Zimbabwe from hosting international matches due to sub-standard stadiums.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Football_Association_(ZIFA)" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)</a> is already exploiting the possibility of playing Algeria in South Africa later this month.
