The Zimbabwe Meteorological Services Department says scattered thundershowers with heavy downpours are expected in some parts of the country tomorrow. In a weather report and forecast released in conjunction with the Civil Protection Department, the MSD said there is a risk of lightning strikes during this period, even when clouds are distant.
MSD reported that on Tuesday, there were isolated thunderstorms in Matabeleland provinces. Wednesday started sunny and mild, temperatures became hot. Clouds developed throughout the day and there were some showers in some parts of the country. MSD reports that pressure is rising over the southeast coast of the subcontinent.
Tomorrow, Thursday, scattered thundershowers with heavy downpours are expected in Manicaland, Mashonaland, Harare Metropolitan, northern parts of Midlands, and Matabeleland North provinces. The southern parts of the country, including Bulawayo Metropolitan, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, and southern parts of Midlands and Manicaland provinces, will be cloudy, cool, windy, and drizzly. Daytime temperatures will be subdued in these areas.
There is a risk of lightning strikes during this period, even when clouds are distant. Hailstorms and strong winds are also possible.
To stay safe, avoid sheltering under isolated trees or sheds during thunderstorms. Seek shelter inside a home or large building. Even if lightning is seen in the distance, it may not be safe to be outdoors. If you see lightning and can’t count to 30 seconds before hearing thunder, you are not safe from the next lightning strike. Consider installing lightning conductors on buildings.
On Friday morning, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, and southern parts of Midlands and Manicaland provinces will have cloudy conditions with patchy drizzle. The clouds will decrease throughout the day. Other areas will be partly cloudy with a chance of isolated showers, possibly thundery, in the afternoon.

Scattered Thundershowers With Heavy Downpours Expected - MSD

The Southern Africa Regional Climate Outlook Forum predicts that Southern Africa will experience at least 13 cyclones this season, higher than the average of nine per season.
The Government of Zimbabwe has allocated ZWL$37 billion for disaster response and management, as the country is expected to be hit by two tropical cyclones during the rainy season. The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) estimates that around 250,000 people are at risk of being affected by adverse weather conditions, including cyclones, floods, landslides, and hailstorms.
Harsh weather conditions have already caused severe damage, affecting 5,000 people, killing 13 people and injuring 16 this year. In the previous year, Southern Africa experienced 11 cyclones, including one that caused significant destruction and displaced over 100,000 people in Mozambique, Malawi, and Madagascar. Responding to questions from <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/two-cyclones-forecast-250-000-at-risk-experts">The Sunday Mail</a>, the DCP said:

Due to increased cyclonic events, the country is likely to experience at least two tropical cyclones that will make landfall during the 2023-2024 rainfall season.
The impact of extreme weather conditions is estimated to directly and indirectly affect at least 250 000 people and their livelihoods, mainly in landslide- and flood-prone areas.
So far, at least 5 000 people have been affected, while 13 deaths and 16 injuries caused by extreme weather conditions have been reported.

Areas prone to flooding, such as Mbire, Tsholotsho, Muzarabani, Chipinge-Middle Sabi, Chimanimani, and Gokwe North, are put on high alert before the start of the rainy season. The risk of landslides is particularly high in the Eastern Highlands.

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department (MSD)</a> has said Tropical Cyclone Freddy is strengthening near the west coast of Madagascar. 
In a weather report and forecast seen by Pindula News, MSD said winds are slowly strengthening over the south coast of Southern Africa. Reads the weather update:

The fringes of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, now retreating northward towards Zambia, resulting in odd downpours in parts of Mashonaland Central Provinces, namely Shoni Village (100mm) in Madziwa [pronounced Madziva (near Bindura, Mashonaland Central)] and Mount Darwin (75mm). Bindura itself had 40mm. The rest of the atmosphere was generally sunny and hot today as the distant Tropical Storm Freddy (currently strengthening near the west coast of Madagascar, more than 1’000 km away) is drying out much of the atmosphere. Meanwhile, winds are slowly strengthening over the south coast of Southern Africa.

Besides the brief cloudy period in areas and odd showers in areas along the Zambezi Valley, much of the country should be mostly sunny and hot by day. Windy and mild conditions are anticipated towards evening; more felt over provinces such as Masvingo and Matabeleland South as well as southern parts of Manicaland.

Zimbabwe Weather Report And Forecast: 26 February 2023

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department (MSD) of Zimbabwe</a> has warned of heavy rainfall and strong winds that will be brought by Tropical Cyclone Freddy.
In a weather alert seen by Pindula News, MSD said the former <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/cyclone-freddy-hit-madagascar-killing-at-least-1-person/">Tropical Cyclone Freddy</a>, currently an Overland Depression is set to enter the waters of the Mozambique Channel at 1700hrs today. 
Freddy is expected to head West-South-West and in 36 hours, reach its final peak intensity of around 110 km/h (60 knots) [Severe Tropical Storm stage]. 
Freddy will be forced westward making landfall in the early morning hours of Friday 24 February 2023 and quickly weakening over the next 3 days.
Freddy will finally dissipate over Southern Africa. 
However, as early as Thursday evening into Friday morning, the spinning cloud bands, of Tropical Storm Freddy, are anticipated to cause localized heavy rains (above 65mm) and strong winds (reduced to less than 40 knots) in districts such as Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chiredzi, Mwenezi, Beitbridge, Chivi, Masvingo Rural, Zaka and Bikita. 
These areas as some of the parts of Zimbabwe which have received the least cumulative seasonal rainfall.
MSD said members of the public must watch out for very localised heavy rains, and flash-flooding in areas with saturated soils, wetlands, impervious grounds and along river basins. The department also warned the public to expect blown rooftops and fallen trees due to strong winds.
MSD urged the public to open drains and potholes that may be covered in water. 
It also urged the public to stay indoors during thunderstorms unless it is an emergency saying rains may affect outdoor activities.
MSD warned against travelling saying rainy weather may affect drivers’ vision.

NB: Tropical Cyclone Freddy made landfall over the east coast of Madagascar this evening and weakened into a Tropical Storm. Tropical Storm Freddy is still very far from Zimbabwe (more than 1500km away from the eastern border); a special official update will follow shortly.

Widespread thunderstorms were recorded yesterday and heavy falls in excess of 70mm were measured at Gokwe (73mm). Other significant amounts were recorded at Hwange (30mm), Lupane (29mm), Mhondoro (29mm) and Beitbridge (27mm). Meanwhile, the low-pressure system that was responsible for the current wet spell has significantly weakened.

All provinces except for Matabeleland North province should have scattered thunderstorms in cloudy conditions which may be heavy in some areas. Matabeleland North province is expected to be partly cloudy with slight chances of afternoon thundershowers.

Widespread thunderstorms occurred across the country with a notable increase in precipitation amounts in places. The highest amounts were measured at Kariba (63mm), Bulawayo (59mm) and Chisengu (54mm). Other significant amounts above 25mm were at Nyanga (44mm), Mutare (40mm), Zvishavane (39mm), Buhera (33mm), Gweru (31mm) and Hwedza (30mm). Rainfall amounts measured in the remaining places were below 25mm.
FORECAST FOR TOMORROW WEDNESDAY 15 FEBRUARY 2023: 
Numerous afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected countrywide. Localized heavy downpours remain probable in some places, especially in Matabeleland North and Mashonaland East as well as Manicaland Province. Thunderstorms are mainly associated with strong winds hence wind gusts are probable in places.

Some of the highest rainfall figures measured this morning were Zaka (52mm), Chinhoyi (40mm), Kutsaga (38mm), Chibero (29mm), Nka)i (24mm). Plumtree (23mm) and Kwekwe (23mm). However, the extreme southern parts of the country experienced mostly sunny and warm conditions.

Most stations measured rainfall amounts below 20mm expect for Kutsaga (26mm) and Bulawayo (24mm). Cloudy, windy and patchy drizzly conditions prevailed in the morning in areas such as Masvingo, southern parts of Matabeleland South and southern parts of Manicaland Provinces. However, it became less cloudy and warm as the day progressed.

Areas in Matebelaland North and South, Mashonaland West, Mashonland Central, Harare Metropolitan, and northern parts of Midlands Provinces are expected to be cloudy and warm with scattered late afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
